The formation of high mass stars and clusters occurs in giant molecular clouds. Objects in evolved stages of massive star formation such as protostars, hot molecular cores, and ultracompact HII regions have been studied in more detail than earlier, colder objects. With this in mind, the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the whole inner Galactic plane at 870 micron (ATLASGAL) has been carried out to provide a global view of cold dust and star formation at submillimetre wavelengths. To derive kinematic distances to a large sample of ATLASGAL clumps we divided them into groups of sources, which are located close together, mostly within a radius of 2 pc, and have velocities in a similar range with a median velocity dispersion of ~ 1 km/s. Using NH3, N2H+ and CS velocities we calculate near and far kinematic distances to 296 groups of ATLASGAL sources in the first quadrant and 393 groups in the fourth quadrant. We analyse HI self-absorption and HI absorption to resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity. We obtain a scale height of ~ 28+/-2 pc and displacement below the Galactic midplane of ~ -7+/-1 pc. Within distances from 2 to 18 kpc ATLASGAL clumps have a broad range of gas masses with a median of 1050 solar masses and a wide distribution of radii with a median of 0.4 pc. Their distribution in galactocentric radii is correlated with spiral arms. Using a statistically significant ATLASGAL sample we derive a power-law exponent of -2.2+/-0.1 of the clump mass function. This is consistent with the slope derived for clusters and with that of the stellar initial mass function. Examining the power-law index for different galactocentric distances and various source samples shows that it is independent of environment and evolutionary phase. Fitting the mass-size relationship by a power law gives a slope of 1.76+/-0.01 for cold sources such as IRDCs and warm clumps associated with HII regions.
The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey: The Galaxy (ATLASGAL) is an unbiased continuum survey of the inner Galactic disk at 870 μm. It covers +/- 60 deg in Galactic longitude and aims to find all massive clumps at various stages of high-mass star formation in the inner Galaxy, particularly the earliest evolutionary phases. We aim to determine properties such as the gas kinetic temperature and dynamics of new massive cold clumps found by ATLASGAL. Most importantly, we derived their kinematical distances from the measured line velocities. We observed the ammonia (J,K) = (1,1) to (3,3) inversion tr…
Deuteration has been used as a tracer of the evolutionary phases of low- and high-mass star formation. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLASGAL) provides an important repository for a detailed statistical study of massive star-forming clumps in the inner Galactic disc at different evolutionary phases. We study the amount of deuteration using NH2D in a representative sample of high-mass clumps discovered by the ATLASGAL survey covering various evolutionary phases of massive star formation. Unbiased spectral line surveys at 3 mm were thus conducted towards ATLASGAL clumps between 85 and 93…
The initial conditions of molecular clumps in which high-mass stars form are poorly understood. In particular, a more detailed study of the earliest evolutionary phases is needed. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the whole inner Galactic disk at 870 micron, ATLASGAL, has been conducted to discover high-mass star-forming regions at different evolutionary phases. Using the Parkes telescope, we observed the NH3 (1,1) to (3,3) inversion transitions towards 354 ATLASGAL clumps in the fourth quadrant. For a subsample of 289 sources, the N2H+ (1-0) line was measured with the Mopra telescope. W…
High-mass stars are formed within massive molecular clumps, where a large number of stars form close together. The evolution of the clumps with different masses and luminosities is mainly regulated by its high-mass stellar content and the formation of such objects is still not well understood. In this work, we characterise the mid-J CO emission in a statistical sample of 99 clumps (Top100) selected from the ATLASGAL survey that are representative of the Galactic proto-cluster population. High-spatial resolution APEX-CHAMP+ maps of the CO(6-5) and CO(7-6) transitions were obtained and combined …
Observations of millimeter wavelength radio recombination lines (mm-RRLs) are used to search for HII regions in an unbiased way that is complementary to many of the more traditional methods previously used. We carried out targeted mm-RRL observations (39$\leq$ principal quantum number ($n$) $\leq$65 and $Δn$ = 1, 2, 3 and 4, i.e. H$nα$, H$nβ$, H$nγ$ and H$nδ$) using the IRAM 30m and Mopra 22m telescopes. We observed 976 compact dust clumps selected from a catalog of $\sim$10,000 ATLASGAL sources. We detected H$nα$ mm-RRL emission toward 178 clumps; H$nβ$, H$nγ$ and H$nδ$ were also detected tow…
We study ten molecular transitions obtained from an unbiased 3 mm molecular line survey using the IRAM 30 m telescope toward 409 compact dust clumps identified by the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) to understand photodissociation regions (PDRs) associated with the clumps. The main goal of this study is to investigate whether the abundances of the selected molecules show any variations resulting from the PDR chemistry in different clump environments. We selected HCO, HOC$^+$, C$_{2}$H, c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$, CN, H$^{13}$CN, HC$^{15}$N, and HN$^{13}$C as PDR tracers, and H$…
The processes leading to the birth of high-mass stars are poorly understood. We characterise here a sample of 430 massive clumps from the ATLASGAL survey, which are representative of different evolutionary stages. To establish a census of molecular tracers of their evolution we performed an unbiased spectral line survey covering the 3-mm atmospheric window between 84-117 GHz with the IRAM 30m. A smaller sample of 128 clumps has been observed in the SiO (5-4) transition with the APEX telescope to complement the SiO (2-1) line and probe the excitation conditions of the emitting gas, which is the…
Sensitive ground-based submillimeter surveys, such as ATLASGAL, provide a global view on the distribution of cold dense gas in the Galactic plane. Here we use the 353 GHz maps from the Planck/HFI instrument to complement the ground-based APEX/LABOCA observations with information on larger angular scales. The resulting maps reveal the distribution of cold dust in the inner Galaxy with a larger spatial dynamic range. We find examples of elongated structures extending over angular scales of 0.5 degree. Corresponding to >30 pc structures in projection at a distance of 3 kpc, these dust lanes are v…
We aim to directly determine the kinetic temperature and spatial density with formaldehyde for the $\sim$100 brightest ATLASGAL-selected clumps at 870 $μ$m representing various evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation. Ten transitions ($J$ = 3-2 and 4-3) of ortho- and para-H$_2$CO near 211, 218, 225, and 291 GHz were observed with the APEX 12 m telescope. Using non-LTE models with RADEX, we derive the gas kinetic temperature and spatial density using the measured p-H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$-2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$, 4$_{22}$-3$_{21}$/4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$, and 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ r…
[Abridged] Aims. We study the properties of filamentary structures from the ATLASGAL survey. Methods. We use the DisPerSE algorithm to identify spatially coherent structures located across the inner-Galaxy (300 < l < 60 and |b| < 1.5). Results. We have determined distances, masses and physical sizes for 241 of the filamentary structures. We find a median distance of 3.8 kpc, a mean mass of a few 10^3 m_sun, a mean length of ~6pc and a mass-to-length ratio of (M/L) ~200-2000M_sun/ pc. We also find that these filamentary structures are tightly correlated with the spiral arms in longitude and vel…
The ATLASGAL 870mum continuum survey conducted with the APEX telescope is the first survey covering the whole inner Galactic plane (60deg>l>-60deg & b<1.5deg) in submm continuum emission tracing the cold dust of dense and young star-forming regions. Here, we present the overall distribution of sources within our Galactic disk. The submm continuum emission is confined to a narrow range around the galactic plane, but shifted on average by ~0.07deg below the plane. Source number counts show strong enhancements toward the Galactic center, the spiral arms and toward prominent star-forming regions. …
We have compiled the most complete compact and ultracompact HII region catalogue to date via multi-wavelength inspection of survey data. We utilise data from the recently available SASSy 850$μ$m survey to identify massive star forming clumps in the outer Galaxy ($R_{\rm{GC}}>8.5$ kpc) and cross-match with infrared and radio data of known UC HII regions from the RMS database. For the inner Galaxy sample ($R_{\rm{GC}}<8.5$ kpc), we adopt the compact HII regions from previous works that used similar methods to cross match ATLASGAL with either CORNISH or RMS, depending on the location within the G…
The characteristics of the inner Galaxy remain obscured by significant dust extinction, and hence infrared surveys are useful to find young Cepheids whose distances and ages can be accurately determined. A near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic survey was carried out and three classical Cepheids were unveiled in the inner disk, around 20 and 30 degrees in Galactic longitude. The targets feature small Galactocentric distances, 3-5 kpc, and their velocities are important as they may be under the environmental influence of the Galactic bar. While one of the Cepheids has radial velocity consi…
Our Galaxy is known to contain a central boxy/peanut-shaped bulge, yet the importance of a classical, pressure-supported component within the central part of the Milky Way is still being debated. It should be most visible at low metallicity, a regime that has not yet been studied in detail. Using metallicity-sensitive narrow-band photometry, the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) has collected a large sample of metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -1.0) stars in the inner Galaxy to address this open question. We use PIGS to trace the metal-poor inner Galaxy kinematics as function of metallicity for the first…
This study constitutes part of a larger effort aimed at better characterizing the Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) located towards the inner Milky Way bulge and disk. Here, we focus on internal kinematics of nine GGCs, obtained from space-based imaging over time baselines of $>$9 years. We exploit multiple avenues to assess the dynamical state of the target GGCs, constructing radial profiles of projected stellar density, proper motion dispersion, and anisotropy. We posit that two-thirds (6/9) of our target GGCs are in an advanced dynamical state, and are close to (or have recently undergone) …
We use archival ALMA observations of the CO(2-1) and SiO(5-4) molecular line emissions of AGB star R Hya to illustrate the relative contributions of rotation, expansion and line broadening to the morphology and kinematics of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) within some ~70 au (~0.5 arcsec) from the centre of the star. We give evidence for rotation and important line broadening to dominate the inner region, within ~14 au (~100 mas) from the centre of the star. The former is about an axis that projects a few degrees west of north and has a projected rotation velocity of a few km/s. The latter oc…
Despite studying Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) for several years, we are yet to have a complete understanding of their kinematics. In this regard, the change in kinematics of the CMEs, as they travel from the inner corona ($<$ 3R$_\odot)$ to the higher heights is essential. We do a follow up statistical study of several 3D kinematic parameters of 59 CMEs studied by Majumdar et al. (2020). The source regions of these CMEs are identified and classified as Active Regions (ARs), Active Prominences (APs), and Prominence Eruptions (PEs). We study several statistical correlations between different ki…
We present the molecular gas morphology and kinematics of seven nearby Seyfert galaxies obtained from our 230~GHz ALMA observations. The CO J=2-1 kinematics within the inner $\sim30$" ($\lesssim9$~kpc) reveals rotation patterns that have been explored using the Bertola rotation model and a modified version of the Kinemetry package. The latter algorithm reveals various deviations from pure circular rotation in the inner kiloparsec of all seven galaxies, including kinematic twists, decoupled and counter-rotating cores. A comparison of the global molecular gas and stellar kinematics show overall …
We present a detailed analysis of the spatially and spectrally resolved 12CO J=2-1 and J=3-2 emission lines from the TW Hya circumstellar disk, based on science verification data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). These lines exhibit substantial emission in their high-velocity wings (with projected velocities out to 2.1 km/s, corresponding to intrinsic orbital velocities >20 km/s) that trace molecular gas as close as 2 AU from the central star. However, we are not able to reproduce the intensity of these wings and the general spatio-kinematic pattern of the lines wit…
We report a sample of 463 high-mass starless clump (HMSC) candidates within $-60°<l<60°$ and $-1°<b<1°$. This sample has been singled out from 10861 ATLASGAL clumps. All of these sources are not associated with any known star-forming activities collected in SIMBAD and young stellar objects identified using color-based criteria. We also make sure that the HMSC candidates have neither point sources at 24 and 70 \micron~nor strong extended emission at 24 $μ$m. Most of the identified HMSCs are infrared ($\le24$ $μ$m) dark and some are even dark at 70 $μ$m. Their distribution shows crowding in Gala…
We identify 51 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars, 12 possible BHB stars and 58 RR Lyrae stars in Anticentre fields. Their selection does not depend on their kinematics. Light curves and ephemerides are given for 7 previously unknown RR Lyrae stars. All but 4 of the RR Lyrae stars are of Oosterhoff type I. Our selection criteria for BHB stars give results that agree with those used by Smith et al. (2010) and Ruhland et al. (2011). We use 5 methods to determine distances for the BHB stars and 3 methods for the RR Lyrae stars to get distances on a uniform scale. Absolute proper motions (largely …
We present a new approach to combine remote observations and in situ data by STEREO/HI and Wind, respectively, to derive the kinematics and propagation directions of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). We used two methods, Fixed-Phi and Harmonic Mean, to convert ICME elongations into distance, and constrained the ICME direction such that the ICME distance-time and velocity-time profiles are most consistent with in situ measurements of the arrival time and velocity. The derived velocity-time functions from the Sun to 1 AU for the three events under study (1-6 June 2008, 13-18 Februar…
We present near-infrared AMBER (R = 12, 000) and CRIRES (R = 100, 000) observations of the Herbig B[e] star MWC297 in the hydrogen Br-gamma-line. Using the VLTI unit telescopes, we obtained a uv-coverage suitable for aperture synthesis imaging. We interpret our velocity-resolved images as well as the derived two-dimensional photocenter displacement vectors, and fit kinematic models to our visibility and phase data in order to constrain the gas velocity field on sub-AU scales. The measured continuum visibilities constrain the orientation of the near-infrared-emitting dust disk, where we determi…
We made C18O (2-1) and CS (7-6) images of the protostellar envelope around B335 with a high spatial dynamic range from ~10000 to ~400 AU, by combining the Submillimeter Array and single-dish data. The C18O emission shows an extended (~10000 AU) structure as well as a compact (~1500 AU) component concentrated at the protostellar position. The CS emission shows a compact (~900 AU) component surrounding the protostar, plus a halo-like (~3000 AU) structure elongated along the east-west direction. At higher velocities (|dV| >~0.3 km s^-1), the CS emission is stronger and more extended than the C18O…
On the basis of a recently derived color-metallicity relation and stellar parameters from the Sloan Digtal Sky Survey Data Release 7 spectroscopic survey, a large sample of red horizontal branch candidates have been selected to serve as standard candles. The metallicity and kinematic distributions of these stars indicate that they mainly originate from the thick-disk and the halo populations. The typical thick disk is characterized by the first group peaking at [Fe/H] ~ -0.6, Vrot ~ 170 km/s with a vertical scale height around |Z| ~ 1.2 kpc, while stars with [Fe/H] < -0.9 are dominated by the …
