We generalize the exactly solvable corner growth models by choosing the rate of the exponential distribution $a_i+b_j$ and the parameter of the geometric distribution $a_i b_j$ at site $(i, j)$, where $(a_i)_{i \ge 1}$ and $(b_j)_{j \ge 1}$ are jointly ergodic random sequences. We identify the shape function in terms of a simple variational problem, which can be solved explicitly in some special cases.
This paper gives a self-contained proof of the non-existence of nontrivial bi-infinite geodesics in directed planar last-passage percolation with exponential weights. The techniques used are couplings, coarse graining, and control of geodesics through planarity and estimates derived from increment-stationary versions of the last-passage percolation process.
We study a class of corner growth models in which the weights are either all exponentially or all geometrically distributed. The parameter of the distribution at site $(i, j)$ is $a_i+b_j$ in the exponential case and $a_ib_j$ in the geometric case, where $(a_i)_{i \ge 1}$ and $(b_j)_{j \ge 1}$ are themselves drawn randomly at the outset from ergodic distributions. These models are inhomogeneous generalizations of the much studied exactly solvable models in which the parameters are the same for all sites. Our motivation is to understand how inhomogeneity influences the limit shape and the corre…
We establish estimates for the coalescence time of semi-infinite directed geodesics in the planar corner growth model with i.i.d. exponential weights. There are four estimates: upper and lower bounds on the probabilities of both fast and slow coalescence on the correct spatial scale with exponent $3/2$. Our proofs utilize a geodesic duality introduced by Pimentel and properties of the increment-stationary last-passage percolation process. For fast coalescence our bounds are new and they have matching optimal exponential order of magnitude. For slow coalescence we reproduce bounds proved earlie…
These lecture notes discuss several related features of the exactly solvable two-dimensional corner growth model with exponentially distributed weights. A key property of this model is the availability of a fairly explicit stationary version that possesses useful independence properties. With the help of couplings and estimates, we prove the existence of Busemann functions for this model, and the precise values of the longitudinal and transversal fluctuation exponents for the stationary corner growth model. The Busemann functions in turn furnish extremals for variational formulas that describe…
We study the macroscopic evolution of the growing cluster in the exactly solvable corner growth model with independent exponentially distributed waiting times. The rates of the exponentials are given by an addivitely separable function of the site coordinates. When computing the growth process (last-passage times) at each site, the horizontal and vertical additive components of the rates are allowed to also vary respectively with the column and row number of that site. This setting includes several models of interest from the literature as special cases. Our main result provides simple explici…
This is the first of a three paper series in which we present a comprehensive study of the extreme value theory of the scale-inhomogeneous discrete Gaussian free field. This model was introduced by Arguin and Ouimet who computed the first order of the maximum. In this first paper we establish tail estimates for the maximum value, which allow to deduce the log-correction to the order of the maximum and tightness of the centred maximum. Our proofs are based on the second moment method and Gaussian comparison techniques.
Rank 1 inhomogeneous random graphs are a natural generalization of Erdős Rényi random graphs. In this generalization each node is given a weight. Then the probability that an edge is present depends on the product of the weights of the nodes it is connecting. In this article, we give precise and uniform exponential bounds on the size, weight and surplus of rank 1 inhomogeneous random graphs where the weights of the nodes behave like a random variable with finite fourth moment. We focus on the case where the mean degree of a random node is slightly larger than 1, we call that case the barely su…
Let $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables (not necessarily identically distributed), and $η$ be a counting random variable independent of this sequence. We obtain sufficient conditions on $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ and $η$ under which the distribution function of the random sum $S_η=ξ_1+ξ_2+\cdots+ξ_η$ belongs to the class of $\mathcal{O}$-exponential distributions.
We study an inhomogeneous generalization of the classical corner growth in which the weights are exponentially distributed with random parameters. Our main interest is in the quenched and annealed large deviation properties of the last passage times. We derive variational representations of the rate functions for right tail large deviations. The quenched rate function can be computed explicitly for certain choices of the parameter distributions. We present a mechanism for rate n left tail annealed large deviations. In the quenched model these deviations have rate strictly greater than n. The a…
Let $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables. In this paper, the sufficient conditions are found under which the tail probability $\mathbb{P}(\sup_{n\geqslant0}\sum_{i=1}^nξ_i>x)$ can be bounded above by $\varrho_1\exp\{-\varrho_2x\}$ with some positive constants $\varrho_1$ and $\varrho_2$. A way to calculate these two constants is presented. The application of the derived bound is discussed and a Lundberg-type inequality is obtained for the ultimate ruin probability in the inhomogeneous renewal risk model satisfying the ne…
We show that the contact process on the rank-one inhomogeneous random graphs and Erdos-R{é}nyi graphs with mean degree large enough survives a time exponential in the size of these graphs for any positive infection rate. In addition, a metastable result for the extinction time is also proved.
We consider an elliptic and time-inhomogeneous diffusion process with time-periodic coefficients evolving in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a smooth boundary. The process is killed when it hits the boundary of the domain (hard killing) or after an exponential time (soft killing) associated with some bounded rate function. The branching particle interpretation of the non absorbed diffusion again behaves as a set of interacting particles evolving in an absorbing medium. Between absorption times, the particles evolve independently one from each other according to the diffusion semigroup;…
We provide an original and general sufficient criterion ensuring the exponential contraction of Feynman-Kac semi-groups of penalized processes. This criterion is applied to time-inhomogeneous one-dimensional diffusion processes conditioned not to hit 0 and to penalized birth and death processes evolving in a quenched random environment.
The Bouchaud-Anderson model (BAM) is a generalisation of the parabolic Anderson model (PAM) in which the driving simple random walk is replaced by a random walk in an inhomogeneous trapping landscape; the BAM reduces to the PAM in the case of constant traps. In this paper we study the BAM with double-exponential potential. We prove the complete localisation of the model whenever the distribution of the traps is unbounded. This may be contrasted with the case of constant traps (i.e. the PAM), for which it is known that complete localisation fails. This shows that the presence of an inhomogeneou…
The 1+1 dimensional corner growth model with exponential weights is a centrally important exactly solvable model in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang class of statistical mechanical models. While significant progress has been made on the fluctuations of the growing random shape, understanding of the optimal paths, or geodesics, is less developed. The Busemann function is a useful analytical tool for studying geodesics. This paper describes the joint distribution of the Busemann functions, simultaneously in all directions of growth. As applications of this description we derive a marked point process rep…
In this paper, we consider time-inhomogeneous branching processes and time-inhomogeneous birth-and-death processes, in which the offspring distribution and birth and death rates (respectively) vary in time. A classical result of branching processes states that in the critical regime, a process conditioned on non-extinction and normalized will converge in distribution to a standard exponential. In a paper of Jagers, time-inhomogeneous branching processes are shown to exhibit this convergence as well. In this paper, the hypotheses of Jagers' result are relaxed, further hypotheses are presented f…
Time homogeneous polynomial processes are Markov processes whose moments can be calculated easily through matrix exponentials. In this work, we develop a notion of time inhomogeneous polynomial processes where the coeffiecients of the process may depend on time. A full characterization of this model class is given by means of their semimartingale characteristics. We show that in general, the computation of moments by matrix exponentials is no longer possible. As an alternative we explore a connection to Magnus series for fast numerical approximations. Time-inhomogeneity is important in a numbe…
We introduce and study the inhomogeneous exponential jump model - an integrable stochastic interacting particle system on the continuous half line evolving in continuous time. An important feature of the system is the presence of arbitrary spatial inhomogeneity on the half line which does not break the integrability. We completely characterize the macroscopic limit shape and asymptotic fluctuations of the height function (= integrated current) in the model. In particular, we explain how the presence of inhomogeneity may lead to macroscopic phase transitions in the limit shape such as shocks or…
In this paper, we demonstrate through the use of matrix calculus a transparent analysis of fractional inhomogeneous Markov models for life insurance where transition matrices commute. The resulting formulae are intuitive matrix generalizations of their single-state counterparts, and the absorption times are matrix versions of well-known scalar distributions. A further advantage of this approach is that it allows extending the analysis to the non-Markovian case where sojourns are Mittag-Leffler distributed, and where the absorption times are fractional phase-type distributed. Considering determ…
The perturbed GUE corners ensemble is the joint distribution of eigenvalues of all principal submatrices of a matrix $G+\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{a})$, where $G$ is the random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), and $\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{a})$ is a fixed diagonal matrix. We introduce Markov transitions based on exponential jumps of eigenvalues, and show that their successive application is equivalent in distribution to a deterministic shift of the matrix. This result also leads to a new distributional symmetry for a family of reflected Brownian motions with drifts coming from an arith…
