Due to the fact that Quality of Service (QoS) requirements are not as stringent for non-real-time traffic types, as opposed to real-time traffic, more calls can be accommodated by releasing some bandwidth from the existing non-real-time traffic calls. If the released bandwidth to accept a handover call is larger than to accept a new call, then the probability of dropping a call is smaller than the probability of blocking a call. In this paper we propose an efficient Call Admission Control (CAC) that relies on adaptive multi-level bandwidth-allocation scheme for non-real-time calls. The features of the scheme allow reduction of the call dropping probability along with the increase of the bandwidth utilization. The numerical results show that the proposed scheme is able to attain negligible handover call dropping probability without sacrificing bandwidth utilization.
One of the most important aspects of moving forward to the next generation networks like 5G/6G, is to enable network slicing in an efficient manner. The most challenging issues are the uncertainties in computation and communication demand. Because the slices' arrive to the network in different times and their lifespans vary, the solution should dynamically react to online slice requests. The joint problem of online admission control and resource allocation considering the energy consumption is formulated mathematically. It is based on Binary Linear Programming (BLP), where, the $Γ$-Robustness …
Using instantaneous aggregate arrival rate as an admission control parameter will contribute to either bandwidth under-utilization or over-utilization. Being bursty in nature and variable in rate, video flows might encode any rate between a range of minimum and maximum values. At the time the decision is made, if the measured rate is at the minimum value, the bandwidth might be over-utilized due to accepting more sessions than the link can accommodate. In contrast, it might be under-utilized if the measured rate is at the maximum value due to rejecting more sessions than the link can accommoda…
DiffServ-aware MPLS-TE (DS-TE) allows bandwidth reservation for Traffic Classes (TCs) in MPLS-based engineered networks and, as such, improves the basic MPLS-TE model. In DS-TE networks, per-Class quality of service guarantees are provided while being possible to achieve improved network utilization. DS-TE requires the use of a Bandwidth Allocation Model (BAM) that establishes the amount of bandwidth per-Class and any eventual sharing among them. This paper proposes a new bandwidth allocation model (AllocTC-Sharing) in which the higher priority traffic classes are allowed to use non allocated …
The communication network context in actual systems like 5G, cloud and IoT (Internet of Things), presents an ever-increasing number of users, applications, and services that are highly distributed with distinct and heterogeneous communications requirements. Resource allocation in this context requires dynamic, efficient, and customized solutions and Bandwidth Allocation Models (BAMs) are an alternative to support this new trend. This paper proposes the BAMSDN (Bandwidth Allocation Model through Software-Defined Networking) framework that dynamically allocates resources (bandwidth) for a MPLS (…
Bandwidth Allocation Models (BAMs) configure and handle resource allocation (bandwidth, LSPs, fiber, slots) in networks in general (IP/MPLS/DS-TE, optical domain, other). In this paper, BAMs are considered for elastic optical networks slot allocation targeting an improvement in resource utilization. The paper focuses initially on proposing a BAM basic configuration parameter mapping suitable for elastic optical circuits. Following that, MAM, RDM and ATCS BAMs are applied for elastic optical networks resource allocation and the overall network resource utilization is evaluated. A set of simulat…

The emergence of diverse network applications demands more flexible and responsive resource allocation for networks. Network slicing is a key enabling technology that provides each network service with a tailored set of network resources to satisfy specific service requirements. The focus of this paper is the network slicing of access networks realized by Passive Optical Networks (PONs). This paper proposes a learning-based Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithm for PON access networks, considering slice-awareness, demand-responsiveness, and allocation fairness. Our online convex optimiz…
Management is a complex task in today's heterogeneous and large scale networks like Cloud, IoT, vehicular and MPLS networks. Likewise, researchers and developers envision the use of artificial intelligence techniques to create cognitive and autonomic management tools that aim better assist and enhance the management process cycle. Bandwidth allocation models (BAMs) are a resource allocation solution for networks that need to share and optimize limited resources like bandwidth, fiber or optical slots in a flexible and dynamic way. This paper proposes and evaluates the use of Case-Based Reasonin…
Data communication in cloud-based distributed stream data analytics often involves a collection of parallel and pipelined TCP flows. As the standard TCP congestion control mechanism is designed for achieving "fairness" among competing flows and is agnostic to the application layer contexts, the bandwidth allocation among a set of TCP flows traversing bottleneck links often leads to sub-optimal application-layer performance measures, e.g., stream processing throughput or average tuple complete latency. Motivated by this and enabled by the rapid development of the Software-Defined Networking (SD…

In distributed computing frameworks like MapReduce, Spark, and Dyrad, a coflow is a set of flows transferring data between two stages of a job. The job cannot start its next stage unless all flows in the coflow finish. To improve the execution performance of such a job, it is crucial to reduce the completion time of a coflow which can contribute more than 50% of the job completion time. While several schedulers have been proposed, we observe that routing, as a factor greatly impacting the Coflow Completion Time (CCT), has not been well considered. In this paper, we focus on the coflow scheduli…
With the inevitable dominance of video traffic on the Internet, providing perceptually good video quality is becoming a challenging task. This is partly due to the bursty nature of video traffic, changing network conditions and limitations of network transport protocols. This growth of video traffic has made Quality of Experience (QoE) of the end user the focus of the research community. In contrast, Internet service providers are concerned about maximizing revenue by accepting as many sessions as possible, as long as customers remain satisfied. However, there is still no entirely satisfactory…
Network slicing has been considered as one of the key enablers for 5G to support diversified services and application scenarios. This paper studies the distributed network slicing utilizing both the spectrum resource offered by communication network and computational resources of a coexisting fog computing network. We propose a novel distributed framework based on a new control plane entity, regional orchestrator (RO), which can be deployed between base stations (BSs) and fog nodes to coordinate and control their bandwidth and computational resources. We propose a distributed resource allocati…
The centralized architecture in software-defined network (SDN) provides a global view of the underlying network, paving the way for enormous research in the area of SDN traffic engineering (SDN TE). This research focuses on the load balancing aspects of SDN TE, given that the existing reactive methods for data-plane load balancing eventually result in packet loss and proactive schemes for data plane load balancing do not address congestion propagation. In the proposed work, the SDN controller periodically monitors flow level statistics and utilization on each link in the network and over-utili…
In this paper, a new queuing model for the Tactile Internet (TI) is proposed for the cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architecture of the next generation wireless networks, e.g., 5G, assisted via orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technology. This model includes both the radio remote head (RRH) and baseband processing unit (BBU) queuing delays and reliability for each end to end (E2E) connection between each pair of tactile users. For this setup, with the aim to minimize the transmit power of users subject to guaranteeing tolerable delay of users, and fronthaul and access …
This paper studies a federated learning (FL) system, where \textit{multiple} FL services co-exist in a wireless network and share common wireless resources. It fills the void of wireless resource allocation for multiple simultaneous FL services in the existing literature. Our method designs a two-level resource allocation framework comprising \emph{intra-service} resource allocation and \emph{inter-service} resource allocation. The intra-service resource allocation problem aims to minimize the length of FL rounds by optimizing the bandwidth allocation among the clients of each FL service. Base…
This paper addresses the transmission-aware transceiver allocation problem of flexible optical networks for a multi-period planning. The proposed approach aims at assigning the best configuration of bandwidth variable transceivers (BVTRX) considering the amplifier noise and nonlinear channel interferences using the incoherent Extended Gaussian Noise (EGN) model. The proposed solution improves the network throughput and spectrum utilization in the early planning periods and allocates lower number of BV-TRXs in later periods in comparison to algorithms presented recently. A heuristic approach to…
