We study, using quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, the bosonic Kondo-Hubbard model in a two dimensional square lattice. We explore the phase diagram and analyse the mobility of particles and magnetic properties. At unit filling, the transition from a paramagnetic Mott insulator to a ferromagnetic superfluid appears continuous, contrary to what was predicted with mean field. For double occupation per site, both the Mott insulating and superfluid phases are ferromagnetic and the transition is still continuous. Multiband tight binding Hamiltonians can be realized in optical lattice experiments, which offer not only the possibility of tuning the different energy scales over wide ranges, but also the option of loading the system with either fermionic or bosonic atoms.
We propose an experimental protocol to directly observe the Kondo effect by scattering ultracold atoms with spin-dependent interactions. We propose using an optical Feshbach resonance to engineer Kondo-type spin-dependent interactions in a system with ultracold $^6$Li and $^{87}$Rb gases. We calculate the momentum transferred from the $^{87}$Rb gas to the $^6$Li gas in a scattering experiment and show that it has a logarithmically enhanced temperature dependence, characteristic of the Kondo effect and analogous to the resistivity of alloys with magnetic impurities. Experimentally detecting thi…
Motivated by the fact that the low-energy properties of the Kondo model can be effectively simulated in spin chains, we study the realization of the effect with bond impurities in ultracold bosonic lattices at half-filling. After presenting a discussion of the effective theory and of the mapping of the bosonic chain onto a lattice spin Hamiltonian, we provide estimates for the Kondo length as a function of the parameters of the bosonic model. We point out that the Kondo length can be extracted from the integrated real space correlation functions, which are experimentally accessible quantities …
The quantum dynamics of one-dimensional bosonic Josephson junctions with attractive and repulsive interparticle interactions is studied using the Bose-Hubbard model and by numerically-exact computations of the full many-body Hamiltonian. A symmetry present in the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian dictates an equivalence between the evolution in time of attractive and repulsive Josephson junctions with attractive and repulsive interactions of equal magnitude. The full many-body Hamiltonian does not possess this symmetry and consequently the dynamics of the attractive and repulsive junctions are differen…
A variational Monte Carlo method for bosonic lattice models is introduced. The method is based on the Baeriswyl projected wavefunction. The Baeriswyl wavefunction consists of a kinetic energy based projection applied to the wavefunction at infinite interaction, and is related to the shadow wavefunction already used in the study of continuous models of bosons. The wavefunction at infinite interaction, and the projector, are represented in coordinate space, leading to an expression for expectation values which can be evaluated via Monte Carlo sampling. We calculate the phase diagram and other pr…
Motivated by recent work on the non-Hermitian skin effect in the bosonic Kitaev-Majorana model, we study the quantum criticality of interacting bosonic Kitaev-Hubbard models on a chain and a two-leg ladder. In the hard-core limit, we show exactly that the non-Hermitian skin effect disappears via a transformation from hard-core bosonic models to spin-1/2 models. We also show that hard-core bosons can engineer the Kitaev interaction, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the compass interaction in the presence of the complex hopping and pairing terms. Importantly, quantum criticalities of th…
We study a two-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model with two hard-core species away from half filling using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The model includes a repulsive interspecies interaction and different nearest-neighbor hopping terms for the two species. By varying the filling we find a total of five distinct phases, including a normal liquid phase at higher temperature, and four different phases at lower temperature. We find an anti-ferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator and a region of coexistent anti-ferromagnetic and superfluid phases near half filling. Further away from half fillin…
We recently studied a doped two-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model with two hard-core species, with different masses, using quantum Monte Carlo simulations [Phys. Rev. B 88, 161101(R) (2013)]. Upon doping away from half-filling, we find several distinct phases, including a phase-separated ferromagnet with Mott behavior for the heavy species and both Mott insulating and superfluid behaviors for the light species. Introducing polarization, an imbalance in the population between species, we find a fully phase-separated ferromagnet. This phase exists for a broad range of temperatures and polarizati…
The Haldane Insulator is a gapped phase characterized by an exotic non-local order parameter. The parameter regimes at which it might exist, and how it competes with alternate types of order, such as supersolid order, are still incompletely understood. Using the Stochastic Green Function (SGF) quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG), we study numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model (BHM) with contact and near neighbor repulsive interactions. We show that, depending on the ratio of the near neighbor to contact…
We study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model with contact ($U$) and near neighbor ($V$) interactions focusing on the gapped Haldane insulating (HI) phase which is characterized by an exotic nonlocal order parameter. The parameter regime ($U$, $V$ and $μ$) where this phase exists and how it competes with other phases such as the supersolid (SS) phase, is incompletely understood. We use the Stochastic Green Function quantum Monte Carlo algorithm as well as the density matrix renormalization group to map out the phase diagram. Our main conclusions are that the HI exists…
We study a bosonic version of the Kondo lattice model with an on-site repulsion in the conduction band, implemented with alkali atoms in two bands of an optical lattice. Using both weak and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we find that at unit filling of the conduction bosons the superfluid to Mott insulator transition should be accompanied by a magnetic transition from a ferromagnet (in the superfluid) to a paramagnet (in the Mott insulator). Furthermore, an analytic treatment of Gutzwiller mean-field theory reveals that quantum spin fluctuations induced by the Kondo exchange cause the ot…
We present the effective action and self-consistency equations for the bosonic dynamical mean field (B-DMFT) approximation to the bosonic Hubbard model and show that it provides remarkably accurate phase diagrams and correlation functions. To solve the bosonic dynamical mean field equations we use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method for bosonic impurity models based on a diagrammatic expansion in the hybridization and condensate coupling. This method is readily generalized to bosonic mixtures, spinful bosons, and Bose-Fermi mixtures.
We show that for ultra-cold neutral bosonic atoms held in a three-dimensional periodic potential or optical lattice, a Hubbard model with dominant, attractive three-body interactions can be generated. In fact, we derive that the effect of pair-wise interactions can be made small or zero starting from the realization that collisions occur at the zero-point energy of an optical lattice site and the strength of the interactions is energy dependent from effective-range contributions. We determine the strength of the two- and three-body interactions for scattering from van-der-Waals potentials and …
We calculate the superfluid weight and the polarization amplitude for the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model focusing on the strong-coupling regime. Other than analytic calculations we apply two methods: variational Monte Carlo based on the Baeriswyl wave function and exact diagonalization. The former gives zero superfluid response at integer filling, while the latter gives a superfluid response at finite hopping. From the polarization amplitude we derive the variance and the associated size scaling exponent. Again, the variational study does not produce a finite superfluid weight at intege…
We introduce a new numerical method for the solution of self-consistent equations in the cluster mean-field theory. The method uses the density matrix renormalization group method to solve the associated cluster problem. We obtain an accurate critical value of the supersolid-superfluid transitions in the hard-core bosonic Hubbard model on a triangular lattice, which is comparable with the recent quantum Monte Carlo results. This algorithm is applicable to more general classes of models with a larger number of degrees of freedom.
We discuss how multichannel Kondo physics can arise in the setting of a localized level coupled to several bosonic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid leads. We propose one physical realization involving ultracold bosonic atoms coupled to an atomic quantum dot, and a second, based on superconducting nanowires coupled to a Cooper-pair box. The corresponding zero-temperature phase diagram is determined via an interplay between Kondo-type phenomena arising from the dot and the consequences of direct inter-lead hopping, which can suppress the Kondo effect. We demonstrate that the multichannel Kondo state is…
We use the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian to study quantum fluctuations in canonical equilibrium ensembles of bosonic Josephson junctions at relatively high temperatures, comparing the results for finite particle numbers to the classical limit that is attained as $N$ approaches infinity. We consider both attractive and repulsive atom-atom interactions, with especial focus on the behavior near the T=0 quantum phase transition that occurs, for large enough $N$, when attractive interactions surpass a critical level. Differences between Bose-Hubbard results for small $N$ and those of the classical limit…
Quantum degenerate gases trapped in optical lattices are ideal testbeds for fundamental physics because these systems are tunable, well characterized, and isolated from the environment. Controlled disorder can be introduced to explore suppression of quantum diffusion in the absence of conventional dephasing mechanisms such as phonons, which are unavoidable in experiments on electronic solids. Recent experiments use transport of degenerate Fermi gases in optical lattices (Kondov et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 083002 (2015)) to probe a particularly extreme regime of strong interaction in what can …
We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of the bosonic Hubbard model starting from inhomogeneous superfluid or Mott insulator initial states using the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA). We find that the relaxation of the system develops in two steps for sufficiently large interaction strengths: after a fast relaxation the system gets caught in metastable prethermalized states that precede the true equilibrium state. We find that the lifetime of these prethermalized states increases by several orders of magnitude as we increase the on-site interaction strength beyond a threshold value. W…
We study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model at unit filling for the scalar bosons and half filling for the $S=1/2$ fermions using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The bare interaction between the fermions is set to zero. A central question of our study is what type of interactions can be induced between the fermions by the bosons, for both weak and strong interspecies coupling. We find that the induced interactions can lead to competing instabilities favoring phase separation, superconducting phases, and density wave structures, in many cases at work on length sc…
Recently, the frustrated XY model for spins-1/2 on the honeycomb lattice has attracted a lot of attention in relation with the possibility to realize a chiral spin liquid state. This model is relevant to the physics of some quantum magnets. Using the flexibility of ultra-cold atoms setups, we propose an alternative way to realize this model through the Mott regime of the bosonic Kane-Mele-Hubbard model. The phase diagram of this model is derived using the bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. Focussing on the Mott phase, we investigate its magnetic properties as a function of frustration. We do…
In a recent work, Murmann {\it et. al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf114}, 080402 (2015)] have experimentally prepared and manipulated a double-well optical potential containing a pair of Fermi atoms as a possible building block of Hubbard model. Here, we carry out a detailed theoretical study on the properties of both fermionic and bosonic two-site Hubbard models with a pair of interacting atoms in a trap with a double-well structure along z-axis and a 2D harmonic confinement along the transverse directions. We consider fermions as of two-component type and bosons as of spinless as well as of two sp…
We develop an efficient variational approach to studying dynamics of a localized quantum spin coupled to a bath of mobile spinful bosons. We use parity symmetry to decouple the impurity spin from the environment via a canonical transformation and reduce the problem to a model of the interacting bosonic bath. We describe coherent time evolution of the latter using bosonic Gaussian states as a variational ansatz. We provide full analytical expressions for equations describing variational time evolution that can be applied to study in- and out-of-equilibrium phenomena in a wide class of quantum i…
We present numerical evidence for the occurrence of coherent backscattering in the Fock space of a small disordered Bose-Hubbard system consisting of four sites and containing five particles. This many-body interference phenomenon can most conveniently be seen in time evolution processes that start from a Fock state of the Bose-Hubbard system. It manifests itself in an enhanced detection probability of this initial state as compared to other Fock states with comparable total energy. We argue that coherent backscattering in Fock space can be experimentally measured with ultracold bosonic atoms …
Using a generalised version of Gershgorin's circle theorem, rigorous boundaries on the energies of the lowest states of a broad class of line graphs above a critical filling are derived for hardcore bosonic systems. Also a lower boundary on the energy gap towards the next lowest states is established. Additionally, it is shown that the corresponding eigenstates are dominated by a subspace spanned by states containing a compactly localised pair and a lower boundary for the overlap is derived as well. Overall, this strongly suggests localised pair formationin the ground states of the broad class…
We investigate cold bosonic impurity atoms trapped in a vortex lattice formed by condensed bosons of another species. We describe the dynamics of the impurities by a bosonic Hubbard model containing occupation-dependent parameters to capture the effects of strong impurity-impurity interactions. These include both a repulsive direct interaction and an attractive effective interaction mediated by the BEC. The occupation dependence of these two competing interactions drastically affects the Hubbard model phase diagram, including causing the disappearance of some Mott lobes
We study the phase transitions of bosonic $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in different topological lattice models under the interplay of onsite periodic potential and Hubbard repulsion. Through exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the many-body ground state undergoes a continuous phase transition between bosonic FQH liquid and a trivial (Mott) insulator induced by the periodic potential, characterized by the smooth crossover of energy and entanglement entropy. When the Hubbard repulsion decreases, we claim that this bosonic FQ…
We analyze the finite-temperature phase diagram of the boson-fermion-Hubbard model with Feshbach converting interaction, using the coherent-state path-integral method. We show that depending on the position of the bosonic band, this type of interaction, even if weak, can drive the system into the resonant superfluid phase in the strong bosonic interaction limit. It turns out that this phase can exist for an arbitrary number of fermions (i.e., fermionic concentration between 0 and 2) but with the bosonic particle number very close to an integer value. We point out that the standard time-of-flig…
Topological states of matter, such as fractional quantum Hall states, are an active field of research due to their exotic excitations. In particular, ultracold atoms in optical lattices provide a highly controllable and adaptable platform to study such new types of quantum matter. However, finding a clear route to realize non-Abelian quantum Hall states in these systems remains challenging. Here we use the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method to study the Hofstadter-Bose-Hubbard model at filling factor $ν= 1$ and find strong indications that at $α=1/6$ magnetic flux quanta per pl…
We investigate features in the single-particle spectral function beyond the Hubbard bands in the strongly correlated normal phase of the Bose-Hubbard model. There are two distinct classes of additional peaks generated by the bosonic statistics. The first type is thermally activated Hubbard "sidebands", with the same physical origin as the zero-temperature Hubbard bands, but generated by excitations from thermally activated local occupation number states. The second class are two-particle fluctuation resonances driven by the lattice dynamics. In the unity filling Mott insulator, this takes the …
We propose that ultracold alkaline-earth-like atoms confined in one-dimensional optical lattice can realize a Kondo lattice model which hosts a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase and an associated quantum phase transition in a controllable manner. The symmetry protection of the phase transition is discussed from two different viewpoints: topological properties related to spatial patterns of Kondo singlets, and symmetry eigenvalues of the spin states. We uncover the role of various symmetries in the phase diagram of this system by combining a weak-coupling approach by Abelian bosonizati…
In their preprint Anders et al. [arXiv:1004.0510] propose a crucial modification of the Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (B-DMFT) derived by us [Phys. Rev. B 77, 235106 (2008)]. Here we show that the modification consists of two steps which, in fact, cancel each other. Consequently their self-consistency equations are identical to ours.
An extended Bose-Hubbard model (EBHM) with three- and four-body constraints can be feasible in cold atoms in an optical lattice. A rich phase structure including various symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases is obtained numerically with suitable parameter settings and particle filling. The SPT phase is characterized by the Berry phase as a local topological order parameter and the structure of the entanglement spectrum (ES). Based on the presence of various topological phases, separated by gapless phase boundaries, the EBHM exhibits various bosonic topological pumps, which are constructe…
We present a scheme to implement a Fermi-Hubbard-like model in ultracold atoms in optical lattices and analyze the topological features of its ground state. In particular, we show that the ground state for appropriate parameters has a large overlap with a lattice version of the bosonic Laughlin state at filling factor one half. The scheme utilizes laser assisted and normal tunnelling in a checkerboard optical lattice. The requirements on temperature, interactions, and hopping strengths are similar to those needed to observe the Néel antiferromagnetic ordering in the standard Fermi-Hubbard mode…
We consider the many-body spectra of interacting bosonic quantum fields on a lattice in the semiclassical limit of large particle number $N$. We show that the many-body density of states can be expressed as a coherent sum over oscillating long-wavelength contributions given by periodic, non-perturbative solutions of the, typically non-linear, wave equation of the classical (mean-field) limit. To this end we construct the semiclassical approximation for both the smooth and oscillatory part of the many-body density of states in terms of a trace formula starting from the exact path integral form …
In this work, we study a one-dimensional model of interacting bosons coupled to a dynamical $\mathbb{Z}_2$ field, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Bose-Hubbard model, and analyze the interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking and topological symmetry protection. In a previous work, we showed how this model exhibits a spontaneous breaking of the translational symmetry through a bosonic Peierls transition. Here we find how, at half filling, the resulting phase also displays topological features that coexist with the presence of long-range order and yields a topological bond order wave. Using both analyti…
