We find a superradiant quantum phase transition in the model of triangular molecular magnets coupled to the electric component of a microwave cavity field. The transition occurs when the coupling strength exceeds a critical value which, in sharp contrast to the standard two-level emitters, can be tuned by an external magnetic field. In addition to emitted radiation, the molecules develop an in-plane electric dipole moment at the transition. We estimate that the transition can be detected in state of the art microwave strip-line cavities containing $10^{15}$ molecules.
We develop a theory of cavity quantum electrodynamics for a 2D electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and perpendicular static magnetic field, coupled to spatially nonuniform multimode quantum cavity photon fields. We demonstrate that the lowest polaritonic frequency of the full Hamiltonian can vanish for realistic parameters, achieving the Dicke superradiant quantum phase transition. This singular behaviour originates from soft spin-flip transitions possessing a non-vanishing dipole moment at non-zero wave vectors and can be viewed as a magnetostatic instability.
We develop a theory of cavity quantum electrodynamics for a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings and perpendicular magnetic field, coupled to a spatially nonuniform quantum photon field. We show that the superradiant quantum phase transition (SQPT), also known as photon condensation, can in principle occur through a pure in-plane Zeeman coupling, but it requires extremely small (unrealistic) quantum well widths or extremely fine tuning of the effective Landé factor which makes two Landau levels coincide. Landau level crossings can also be induc…
We report on the observation of collective radiative decay, or superradiance, of cyclotron resonance (CR) in high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases in GaAs quantum wells using time-domain terahertz magnetospectroscopy. The decay rate of coherent CR oscillations increases linearly with the electron density in a wide range, which is a hallmark of superradiant damping. Our fully quantum mechanical theory provides a universal formula for the decay rate, which reproduces our experimental data without any adjustable parameter. These results firmly establish the many-body nature of CR decoheren…
We present a numerical investigation of shot noise suppression in mesoscopic cavities and an intuitive semiclassical explanation of the behavior observed in the presence of an orthogonal magnetic field. In particular, we conclude that the decrease of shot noise for increasing magnetic field is the result of the interplay between the diameter of classical cyclotron orbits and the width of the apertures defining the cavity. Good agreement with published experimental results is obtained, without the need of introducing fitting parameters.
Measured and calculated results are presented on the emission properties of a new class of emitters operating in the cavity quantum electrodynamics regime. The structures are based on high-finesse GaAs/AlAs micropillar cavities, each with an active medium consisting of a layer of InGaAs quantum dots and distinguishing feature of having substantial fraction of spontaneous emission channeled into one cavity mode (high-beta factor). This paper shows that the usual criterion for lasing with a conventional (low-beta factor) cavity, a sharp nonlinearity in an input-output curve accompanied by notice…
Microwave-to-optical conversion via ferromagnetic magnons has so-far been limited by the optical coupling rates achieved in mm-scale whispering gallery mode resonators. Towards overcoming this limitation, we propose and demonstrate an open magneto-optical cavity containing a thin-film of yttrium iron garnet (YIG). We achieve a 0.1 pL (100 $μ$m$^{3}$) optical mode volume, $\sim$50 times smaller than previous devices. From this, we estimate the magnon single-photon coupling rate is $G\approx50$ Hz. This open cavity design offers the prospect of wavelength scale mode volumes, small polarization s…
Brillouin light scattering is an established technique to study magnons, the elementary excitations of a magnet. Its efficiency can be enhanced by cavities that concentrate the light intensity. Here, we theoretically study inelastic scattering of photons by a magnetic sphere that supports optical whispering gallery modes in a plane normal to the magnetization. Magnons with low angular momenta scatter the light in the forward direction with a pronounced asymmetry in the Stokes and the anti-Stokes scattering strength, consistent with earlier studies. Magnons with large angular momenta constitute…
We apply Mie scattering theory to study the interaction of magnetic spheres with microwaves in cavities beyond the magnetostatic and rotating wave approximations. We demonstrate that both strong and ultra-strong coupling can be realized for a stand alone magnetic spheres made from yttrium iron garnet (YIG), acting as an efficient microwave antenna. The eigenmodes of YIG spheres with radii of the order mm's display distinct higher angular momentum character that has been observed in experiments.
A system of magnetic molecules coupled to microwave cavities ($LC$ resonators) undergoes the equilibrium superradiant phase transition. The transition is experimentally observable. The effect of the coupling is first illustrated by the vacuum-induced ferromagnetic order in a quantum Ising model and then by the modification of the magnetic phase diagram of ${\rm Fe_8}$ dipolar crystals, exemplifying the cooperation between intrinsic and photon-induced spin-spin interactions. Finally, a transmission experiment is shown to resolve the transition, measuring the quantum electrodynamical control of …
Low field magnetotransport revealing signatures of ballistic transport effects in strained Si/SiGe cavities is investigated. We fabricated strained Si/SiGe cavities by confining a high mobility Si/SiGe 2DEG in a bended nanowire geometry defined by electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. The main features observed in the low temperature magnetoresistance curves are the presence of a zero-field magnetoresistance peak and of an oscillatory structure at low fields. By adopting a simple geometrical model we explain the oscillatory structure in terms of electron magnetic focusing. A deta…
Quantum transport has far-reaching applications in modern electronics as it enables the control of currents in nanoscale systems such as quantum dots. In this paper we introduce tinie: a state-of-the-art quantum transport simulation framework, which can efficiently perform first-principle calculations based on the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. The computational repertoire of tinie includes calculations of transmission, conductivity, and currents running through arbitrary multi-terminal two-dimensional transport devices, with additional tools that enable the computation of the local density of s…
Microwaves couple to magnetic moments in both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Although the magnons in ferromagnets and antiferromagnets radically differ, they can become entangled via strong coupling to the same microwave mode in a cavity. The equilibrium configuration of the magnetic moments crucially governs the coupling between the different magnons because the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic magnons have the opposite spins when their dispersion relations cross. We derive analytical expressions for the coupling strengths and find that the coupling between antiferromagnets and ferroma…
We formulate a scattering theory to study magnetic films in microwave cavities beyond the independent-spin and rotating wave approximations of the Tavis-Cummings model. We demonstrate that strong coupling can be realized not only for the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode, but also for spin wave resonances (SWRs); the coupling strengths are mode dependent and decrease with increasing mode index. The strong coupling regime can be also accessed electrically by spin pumping into a metal contact.
Control over transition rates between spin states of emitters is crucial in a wide variety of fields ranging from quantum information science to the nanochemistry of free radicals. We present an approach to drive a both electric and magnetic dipole-forbidden transition of a spin emitter by placing it in a nanomagnonic cavity, requiring a description of both the spin emitter beyond the point dipole approximation and the vacuum magnetic fields of the nanomagnonic cavity with a large spatial gradient over the volume of the spin emitter. We specifically study the SiV$^-$ defect in diamond, whose Z…
We present a theoretical approach to use ferro- or ferrimagnetic nanoparticles as microwave nanomagnonic cavities to concentrate microwave magnetic fields into deeply subwavelength volumes $\sim 10^{-13}$ mm$^3$. We show that the field in such nanocavities can efficiently couple to isolated spin emitters (spin qubits) positioned close to the nanoparticle surface reaching the single magnon-spin strong-coupling regime and mediate efficient long-range quantum state transfer between isolated spin emitters. Nanomagnonic cavities thus pave the way towards magnon-based quantum networks and magnon-med…
Generalized Dicke models can be implemented in hybrid quantum systems built from ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond coupled to superconducting microwave cavities. By engineering cavity assisted Raman transitions between two spin states of the NV defect, a fully tunable model for collective light-matter interactions in the ultra-strong coupling limit can be obtained. Our analysis of the resulting non-equilibrium phases for a single cavity and for coupled cavity arrays shows that different superradiant phase transitions can be observed using existing experimental technologies,…
