We compare the stellar motion around a spiral arm created in two different scenarios, transient/co-rotating spiral arms and density-wave-like spiral arms. We generate Gaia mock data from snapshots of the simulations following these two scenarios using our stellar population code, SNAPDRAGONS, which takes into account dust extinction and the expected Gaia errors. We compare the observed rotation velocity around a spiral arm similar in position to the Perseus arm, and find that there is a clear difference in the velocity features around the spiral arm between the co-rotating spiral arm and the density-wave-like spiral arm. Our result demonstrates that the volume and accuracy of the Gaia data are sufficient to clearly distinguish these two scenarios of the spiral arms.
We have observed an N-body/Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulation of a Milky Way like barred spiral galaxy. We present a simple method that samples N-body model particles into mock Gaia stellar observations and takes into account stellar populations, dust extinction and Gaia's science performance estimates. We examine the kinematics around a nearby spiral arm at a similar position to the Perseus arm at three lines of sight in the disc plane; (l,b)=(90,0), (120,0) and (150,0) degrees. We find that the structure of the peculiar kinematics around the co-rotating spiral arm, which is found in …
In this first paper we simulate the population of disc Red Clump stars to be observed by Gaia. We generate a set of test particles and we evolve it in a 3D barred Milky Way like galactic potential. We assign physical properties of the Red Clump trace population and a realistic 3D interstellar extinction model. We add Gaia observational constraints and an error model according to the pre-commissioning scientific performance assessments. We present and analyse two mock catalogues, offered to the community, that are an excellent test bed for testing tools being developed for the future scientific…
Context. The physical processes driving the formation of Galactic spiral arms are still under debate. Studies using open clusters favour the description of the Milky Way spiral arms as long-lived structures following the classical density wave theory. Current studies comparing the Gaia DR2 field stars kinematic information of the Solar neighbourhood to simulations, find a better agreement with short-lived arms with a transient behaviour. Aims. Our aim is to provide an observational, data-driven view of the Milky Way spiral structure and its dynamics using open clusters as the main tracers, and…
We model the effects of the spiral arms of the Milky Way on the disk stellar kinematics in the Gaia observable space. We also estimate the Gaia capabilities of detecting the predicted signatures. We use both controlled orbital integrations in analytic potentials and self-consistent simulations. We introduce a new strategy, which consists of comparing the stellar kinematics of symmetric Galactic longitudes (+l and -l), in particular the median transverse velocity (from parallaxes and proper motions). This approach does not require the assumption of an axisymmetric model. The typical differences…
In this paper we introduce a new method for analysing Milky Way phase-space which allows us to reveal the imprint left by the Milky Way bar and spiral arms on the stars with full phase-space data in Gaia Data Release 2. The unprecedented quality and extended spatial coverage of these data enable us to discover six prominent stellar density structures in the disc to a distance of 5 kpc from the Sun. Four of these structures correspond to the spiral arms detected previously in the gas and young stars (Scutum-Centaurus, Sagittarius, Local and Perseus). The remaining two are associated with the ma…
The Milky Way spiral arms are well established from star counts as well as from the locus of molecular clouds and other young objects, however, they have only recently started to be observed from a kinematics point of view. Using the kinematics of thin disc stars in Gaia EDR3 around the extended solar neighbourhood, we create x-y projections coloured by the radial, residual rotational, and vertical Galactocentric velocities ($U,ΔV,W$). The maps are rich in substructures and reveal the perturbed state of the Galactic disc. We find that local differences between rotational velocity and the azimu…
We present and analyse mock stellar catalogues that match the selection criteria and observables (including uncertainties) of the Gaia satellite data release 2 (DR2). The source are six cosmological high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamic $Λ$CDM zoom simulations of the formation of Milky Way analogues from the AURIGA project. Mock data are provided for stars with $V < 16$ mag, and $V < 20$ mag at $|b|>20$ degrees. The mock catalogues are made using two different methods: the public SNAPDRAGONS code, and a method based on that of Lowing et al. that preserves the phase-space distribution of the mod…
We have developed our original made-to-measure (M2M) algorithm, PRIMAL, with the aim of modelling the Galactic disc from upcoming Gaia data. From a Milky Way like N-body disc galaxy simulation, we have created mock Gaia data using M0III stars as tracers, taking into account extinction and the expected Gaia errors. In PRIMAL, observables calculated from the N-body model are compared with the target stars, at the position of the target stars. Using PRIMAL, the masses of the N-body model particles are changed to reproduce the target mock data, and the gravitational potential is automatically adju…
As we enter a golden age for studies of internal kinematics and dynamics of Galactic globular clusters (GCs), it is timely to assess the performance of modelling techniques in recovering the mass, mass profile, and other dynamical properties of GCs. Here, we compare different mass-modelling techniques (distribution-function (DF)-based models, Jeans models, and a grid of N-body models) by applying them to mock observations from a star-by-star N-body simulation of the GC M 4 by Heggie. The mocks mimic existing and anticipated data for GCs: surface brightness or number density profiles, local ste…
We have adapted our made-to-measure (M2M) algorithm PRIMAL to use mock Milky Way like data constructed from an N-body barred galaxy with a boxy bulge in a known dark matter potential. We use M0 giant stars as tracers, with the expected error of the ESA space astrometry mission Gaia. We demonstrate the process of constructing mock Gaia data from an N-body model, including the conversion of a galactocentric Cartesian coordinate N-body model into equatorial coordinates and how to add error to it for a single stellar type. We then describe the modifications made to PRIMAL to work with observationa…
The solar neighborhood contains disc stars that have recently crossed spiral arms in the Galaxy. We propose that boundaries in local velocity distributions separate stars that have recently crossed or been perturbed by a particular arm from those that haven't. Ridges in the stellar velocity distributions constructed from the second Gaia data release trace orbits that could have touched nearby spiral arms at apocentre or pericentre. The multiple ridges and arcs seen in local velocity distributions are consistent with the presence of multiple spiral features and different pattern speeds and impl…
We present a mock catalog of Milky Way stars, matching in volume and depth the content of the Gaia data release 2 (GDR2). We generated our catalog using Galaxia, a tool to sample stars from a Besancon Galactic model, together with a realistic 3D dust extinction map. The catalog mimicks the complete GDR2 data model and contains most of the entries in the Gaia source catalog: 5-parameter astrometry, 3-band photometry, radial velocities, stellar parameters, and associated scaled nominal uncertainty estimates. In addition, we supplemented the catalog with extinctions and photometry for non-Gaia ba…
We present a mock stellar catalog, matching in volume, depth and data model the content of the planned Gaia early data release 3 (Gaia EDR3). We have generated our catalog (GeDR3mock) using galaxia, a tool to sample stars from an underlying Milky Way (MW) model or from N-body data. We used an updated Besançon Galactic model together with the latest PARSEC stellar evolutionary tracks, now also including white dwarfs. We added the Magellanic clouds and realistic open clusters with internal rotation. We empirically modelled uncertainties based on Gaia DR2 (GDR2) and scaled them according to the l…

In this work we revisit the issue of the rotation speed of the spiral arms and the location of the corotation radius of our Galaxy. This research was performed using homogeneous data set of young open clusters (age < 50 Myr) determined from Gaia DR2 data. The stellar astrometric membership were determined using proper motions and parallaxes, taking into account the full covariance matrix. The distance, age, reddening and metallicity of the clusters were determined by our non subjective multidimensional global optimization tool to fit theoretical isochrones to Gaia DR2 photometric data. The rot…
We aim to explore the actions of the new Gaia DR3 astrometry to find structures in the Galactic disc. We compute the actions and the orbital parameters of the Gaia DR3 stars with full astrometry and velocities assuming an axisymmetric model for the Milky Way. Using Gaia DR3 photometric data, we select a subset of giants stars with better astrometry as control sample. The maps of the percentiles of the radial action J_R reveal spiral-like shape structures. We find a high J_R region centered at R~10.5 kpc of 1 kpc width, as well as three arc-shape regions dominated by circular orbits at inner ra…
Taking advantage of the recent Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), we map chemical inhomogeneities in the Milky Way's disc out to a distance of $\sim$ 4 kpc from the Sun, using different samples of bright giant stars. The samples are selected using effective temperatures and surface gravities from the GSP-Spec module, and are expected to trace stellar populations of different typical age. The cool (old) giants exhibit a relatively smooth radial metallicity gradient with an azimuthal dependence. Binning in Galactic azimuth $ϕ$, the slope gradually varies from $d$[M/H]$/dR \sim -0.054$ dex kpc$^{-1}$ at …
We use astrometry and broad-band photometry from Data Release 2 of the ESA's Gaia mission to map out low surface-brightness features in the stellar density distribution around the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The LMC appears to have grown two thin and long stellar streams in its Northern and Southern regions, highly reminiscent of spiral arms. We use computer simulations of the Magellanic Clouds' in-fall to demonstrate that these arms were likely pulled out of the LMC's disc due to the combined influence of the SMC's most recent fly-by and the tidal field of the Milky Way.
Using of a new N-body simulation, as well as Gaia DR2/EDR3 data complemented by data from the Galah, APOGEE, LAMOST surveys, we explore the possible link between the MW spiral arms, RVphi-ridges and moving groups in local UV space. We show that the tightly wound main spiral arms in the N-body model can be successfully identified using overdensities in angular momentum (AM) or guiding space, as well as in the distribution of dynamically cold stars close to their guiding centers. Stars in the AM overdensities that travel over many kpc in radius trace extended density ridges in RVphi space and ov…
Using the cross-matched data of Gaia DR2 and 2MASS Point Source Catalog, we investigated the surface density distribution of stars aged ~1 Gyr in the thin disk in the range of 90° <= l <= 270°. We selected 4,654 stars above the turnoff corresponding to the age ~1 Gyr, that fall within a small box region in the color-magnitude diagram, (J-Ks)0 versus M(Ks), for which the distance and reddening are corrected. The selected sample shows an arm-like overdensity at 90° <= l <= 190°.This overdensity is located close to the Local arm traced by high-mass star forming regions (HMSFRs), but its pitch ang…
The aim of this work is to contribute to the understanding of the stellar velocity distribution in the solar neighborhood (SN). We propose that the structures on the $U-V$ planes, known as the moving groups, can be mainly explained by the spiral arms perturbations. The applied model of the Galactic disk and spiral arms, with the parameters defined by observational data and with pattern speed $Ω_p=$28.0 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, is the same that allowed us to explain the origin of the Local Arm and the Sun's orbit trapped inside the corotation resonance (CR). We show that the $U-V$ picture of the…
Mapping the Galactic spiral structure is a difficult task since the Sun is located in the Galactic plane and because of dust extinction. For these reasons, molecular masers in radio wavelengths have been used with great success to trace the Milky Way spiral arms. Recently, Gaia parallaxes have helped in investigating the spiral structure in the Solar extended neighborhood. In this paper, we propose to determine the location of the spiral arms using Cepheids since they are bright, young supergiants with accurate distances (they are the first ladder of the extragalactic distance scale). They can…
We test the performance of the semi-analytic self-consistent Just-Jahreiß disc model (JJ model) with the astrometric data from the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) sub-catalogue of the first Gaia data release (Gaia DR1), as well as the radial velocities from the fifth data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment survey (RAVE DR5). We use a sample of 19,746 thin disc stars from the TGAS$\times$RAVE cross-match selected in the local solar cylinder of 300 pc radius and 1 kpc height below the Galactic plane and simulate this sample via the forward modelling technique. First, we convert the…
A direct observation of the spiral structure of the Galaxy is hindered by our position in the middle of the Galactic plane. We propose a method based on the analysis of the birthplaces of high Galactic latitude runaway stars to map the spiral arms and determine their dynamics. As a proof of concept, the method is applied to a local sample of early-type stars and a sample of runaways stars to obtain estimates of the pattern speed and the spiral arm's phase angle. We also estimate the performance of this method once the data gathered by Gaia, in particular for runaway stars observed on the other…
High resolution N-body simulations using different codes and initial condition techniques reveal two different behaviours for the rotation frequency of transient spiral arms like structures. Whereas unbarred disks present spiral arms nearly corotatingwith disk particles, strong barred models (bulged or bulge-less) quickly develop a bar-spiral structure dominant in density, with a pattern speed almost constant in radius. As the bar strength decreases the arm departs from bar rigid rotation and behaves similar to the unbarred case. In strong barred models we detect in the frequency space other s…
By taking advantage of the superb measurements of position and velocity for an unprecedented large number of stars provided in Gaia DR2, we have generated the first maps of the rotation velocity, $V_{\rm rot}$, and vertical velocity, $V_{\rm z}$, distributions as a function of the Galactocentric radius, $R_{\rm gal}$, across a radial range of $5<R_{\rm gal}<12$~kpc. In the $R-V_{\rm rot}$ map, we have identified many diagonal ridge features, which are compared with the location of the spiral arms and the expected outer Lindblad resonance of the Galactic bar. We have detected also radial wave-l…
The origin of the Hercules stream, the most prominent velocity substructure in the Solar neighbour disc stars, is still under debate. Recent accurate measurements of position, velocity, and metallicity provided by Tycho Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) and RAdial Velocity Experiments (RAVE) have revealed that the Hercules stream is most clearly seen in the metal-rich region ([Fe/H] > 0), while it is not clearly seen in lower metallicity region ([Fe/H] < -0.25). By using a large number of chemo-dynamical 2D test-particle simulations with a rotating bar and/or spiral arms, we find that the obser…
It is imperative to map the strength and distribution of feedback in galaxies to understand how feedback affects the galactic ecosystems. H$_2$O masers act as indicators of energy injection into the ISM. Our goal is to measure the strength and distribution of feedback traced by water masers in the Milky Way. We identify optical counterparts to H$_2$O masers discovered by the HOPS survey. The distribution and luminosities of H$_2$O masers in the Milky Way are determined using parallax measurements derived from the second Gaia Data Release. We provide evidence of a correlation between evolved st…
Using the astrometry and integrated photometry from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), we map the density variations in the distribution of young Upper Main Sequence (UMS) stars, open clusters and classical Cepheids in the Galactic disk within several kiloparsecs of the Sun. Maps of relative over/under-dense regions for UMS stars in the Galactic disk are derived, using both bivariate kernel density estimators and wavelet transformations. The resulting overdensity maps exhibit large-scale arches, that extend in a clumpy but coherent way over the entire sampled volume, indicating the location…
By mining the data from $Gaia$ EDR3, SDSS/SEGUE DR16 and LAMOST DR8, 11 member stars of the NGC 5466 tidal stream are detected and 7 of them are newly identified. To reject contaminators, a variety of cuts are applied in sky position, color-magnitude diagram, metallicity, proper motion and radial velocity. We compare our data to a mock stream generated by modeling the cluster's disruption under a smooth Galactic potential plus the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The concordant trends in phase-space between the model and observations imply that the stream might have been perturbed by LMC. The two…
Mapping the Galactic disk with the LAMOST and Gaia Red clump sample: VIII: Mapping the kinematics of the Galactic disk using mono-age and mono-abundance stellar populations
The Milky Way galaxy is a typical spiral galaxy which consists of a black hole in its centre, a barred bulge and a disk which contains spiral arms. The complex structure of the Galaxy makes it extremely difficult and challenging to model its mass distribution, particularly for the Galactic disk which plays the most important role in the dynamics and evolution of the Galaxy. Conventionally an axisymmetric disk model with an exponential brightness distribution and a constant mass-to-light ratio is assumed for the Galactic disk. In order to generate a flat rotation curve, a dark halo has also to …
We present a method to identify Ultra Faint Dwarf Galaxy (UFDG) candidates in the halo of the Milky Way using the future Gaia catalogue and we explore its detection limits and completeness. The method is based on the Wavelet Transform and searches for over-densities in the combined space of sky coordinates and proper motions, using kinematics in the search for the first time. We test the method with a Gaia mock catalogue that has the Gaia Universe Model Snapshot (GUMS) as a background, and use a library of around 30 000 UFDGs simulated as Plummer spheres with a single stellar population. For t…
Context. The Gaia mission has released the second data set (Gaia DR2), which contains parallaxes and proper motions for a large number of massive, young stars. Aims. We investigate the spiral structure in the solar neighborhood revealed by Gaia DR2 and compare it with that depicted by VLBI maser parallaxes. Methods. We examined three samples with different constraints on parallax uncertainty and distance errors and stellar spectral types: (1) all OB stars with parallax errors of less than 10%; (2) only O-type stars with 0.1 mas errors imposed and with parallax distance errors of less than 0.2 …
We present the discovery of stellar tidal tails around the Large and the Small Magellanic Clouds in the Gaia DR1 data. In between the Clouds, their tidal arms are stretched towards each other to form an almost continuous stellar bridge. Our analysis relies on the exquisite quality of the Gaia's photometric catalogue to build detailed star-count maps of the Clouds. We demonstrate that the Gaia DR1 data can be used to detect variable stars across the whole sky, and in particular, RR Lyrae stars in and around the LMC and the SMC. Additionally, we use a combination of Gaia and Gale to follow the d…
Context. The astrometric satellite Gaia is expected to significantly increase our knowledge as to the properties of the Milky Way. The Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides the most precise parallaxes for many OB stars, which can be used to delineate the Galactic spiral structure. Aims. We investigate the local spiral structure with the largest sample of spectroscopically confirmed young OB stars available to date, and we compare it with what was traced by the parallax measurements of masers. Methods. A sample consisting of three different groups of massive young stars, including O-B2…
RoadMapping is a dynamical modeling machinery developed to constrain the Milky Way's (MW) gravitational potential by simultaneously fitting an axisymmetric parametrized potential and an action-based orbit distribution function (DF) to discrete 6D phase-space measurements of stars in the Galactic disk. In this work we demonstrate RoadMapping's robustness in the presence of spiral arms by modeling data drawn from an N-body simulation snapshot of a disk-dominated galaxy of MW mass with strong spiral arms (but no bar), exploring survey volumes with radii 500pc<=r_max<=5kpc. The potential constrain…
Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at radio wavelengths can provide astrometry accurate to 10 micro-arcseconds or better (i.e. better than the target GAIA accuracy) without being limited by dust obscuration. This means that unlike GAIA, VLBI can be applied to star-forming regions independently of their internal and line-of-sight extinction. Low-mass young stellar objects (particularly T Tauri stars) are often non-thermal compact radio emitters, ideal for astrometric VLBI radio continuum experiments. Existing observations for nearby regions (e.g. Taurus, Ophiuchus, or Orion) demonstrate t…
We map the 3D kinematics of the Galactic disc out to 3.5 kpc from the Sun, and within 0.75 kpc from the midplane of the Galaxy. To this end, we combine high quality astrometry from \gedrthree{}, with heliocentric line-of-sight velocities from \gdrtwo{}, and spectroscopic surveys including \apogee{}, \galah{}, and \lamost{}. We construct an axisymmetric model for the mean velocity field, and subtract this on a star-by-star basis to obtain the residual velocity field in the Galactocentric components (\vphi{}, \vR, \vz), and \vlos{}. The velocity residuals are quantified using the power spectrum,…
Open clusters are convenient probes of the structure and history of the Galactic disk. They are also fundamental to stellar evolution studies. The second Gaia data release contains precise astrometry at the sub-milliarcsecond level and homogeneous photometry at the mmag level, that can be used to characterise a large number of clusters over the entire sky. In this study we aim to a establish list of members and derive mean parameters, in particular distances, for as many clusters as possible, making use of Gaia data alone. We compile a list of thousands of known or putative clusters from the l…
{\it Gaia} Data Release 2 (DR2) revealed that the Milky Way contains significant indications of departures from equilibrium in the form of asymmetric features in the phase space density of stars in the Solar neighborhood. One such feature is the $z$--$v_z$ phase spiral, interpreted as the response of the disk to the influence of a perturbation perpendicular to the disk plane, which could be external (e.g., a satellite) or internal (e.g., the bar or spiral arms). In this work we use {\it Gaia} DR3 to dissect the phase spiral by dividing the local data set into groups with similar azimuthal acti…
We present a wavelet-based algorithm to identify dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way in ${\it Gaia}$ DR2 data. Our algorithm detects overdensities in 4D position--proper motion space, making it the first search to explicitly use velocity information to search for dwarf galaxy candidates. We optimize our algorithm and quantify its performance by searching for mock dwarfs injected into ${\it Gaia}$ DR2 data and for known Milky Way satellite galaxies. Comparing our results with previous photometric searches, we find that our search is sensitive to undiscovered systems at Galactic latitudes~$\lvert b\…
Recent studies using Gaia DR2 have identified a massive merger in the history of the Milky Way (MW) whose debris is markedly radial and counterrotating. This event, known as the Gaia-Enceladus/Gaia-Sausage (GE/GS), is also hypothesized to have built the majority of the inner stellar halo. We use the cosmological hydrodynamic simulation Illustris to place this merger in the context of galaxy assembly within $Λ$CDM. From $\sim$150 MW analogs, $\sim 80 \%$ have experienced at least one merger of similar mass and infall time as GE/GS. Within this sample, 37 have debris as radial as that of the GE/…
High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) are produced after the first supernova event in a massive binary. These objects are intrinsically young, and can suffer from a significant natal kick. As such, the progenitors of HMXBs are likely to have formed away from the current location of the X-ray emitting systems. We aim to find the birthplace of the known HMXBs of our Milky Way. Specifically, we want to answer the question whether the formation of HMXBs can be associated to open stellar clusters and/or Galactic spiral structures, and infer from that the time elapsed since the first supernova event. We …
Gaia Data Release 3 has provided the astronomical community with the largest stellar spectroscopic survey to date ($>$ 220 million sources). The low resolution (R$\sim$50) blue photometer (BP) and red photometer (RP) spectra will allow for the estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity. We create mock Gaia BP/RP spectra and use Fisher information matrices to probe the resolution limit of stellar parameter measurements using BP/RP spectra. The best-case scenario uncertainties that this analysis provides are then used to produce a …
