We rigorously establish the asymptotic equivalence between the height function of interacting dimers on the square lattice and the massless Gaussian free field. Our theorem explains the microscopic origin of the sine-Gordon field theory description away from the free fermion point, which has previously been elusive. We use a novel technique, based on the combination of discrete holomorphicity with exact, constructive, renormalization group methods, which has the potential of being applicable to a variety of other non-integrable models at or close to criticality.
In the last few years, the methods of constructive Fermionic Renormalization Group have been successfully applied to the study of the scaling limit of several two-dimensional statistical mechanics models at the critical point, including: weakly non-integrable 2D Ising models, Ashkin-Teller, 8-Vertex, and close-packed interacting dimer models. In this note, we will focus on the illustrative example of the interacting dimer model and review some of the universality results derived in this context. In particular, we will discuss the massless Gaussian free field (GFF) behavior of the height fluctu…
We analyze the classical and quantum properties of the integrable dimer problem. The classical version exhibits exactly one bifurcation in phase space, which gives birth to permutational symmetry broken trajectories and a separatrix. The quantum analysis yields all tunneling rates (splittings) in leading order of perturbation. In the semiclassical regime the eigenvalue spectrum obtained by numerically exact diagonalization allows to conclude about the presence of a separatrix and a bifurcation in the corresponding classical model.
The dimer model on a strip is considered as a Yang-Baxter \mbox{integrable} six vertex model at the free-fermion point with crossing parameter $λ=\tfracπ{2}$ and quantum group invariant boundary conditions. A one-to-many mapping of vertex onto dimer configurations allows for the solution of the free-fermion model to be applied to the anisotropic dimer model on a square lattice where the dimers are rotated by $45\degree$ compared to their usual orientation. In a suitable gauge, the dimer model is described by the Temperley-Lieb algebra with loop fugacity $β=2\cosλ=0$. It follows that the model …
We propose a height-conserving quantum dimer model (hQDM) such that the lattice sum of its associated height field is conserved, and that it admits a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point. The hQDM with minimal interaction range on the square lattice exhibits Hilbert space fragmentation and maps exactly to the XXZ spin model on the square lattice in certain Krylov subspaces. We obtain the ground-state phase diagram of hQDM via quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate that a large portion of it is within the Krylov subspaces which admit the exact mapping to the XXZ model, with dimer ordered phase…
We consider dimer model on a hexagonal lattice. This model can be seen as a "pile of cubes in the box". The energy of configuration is given by the volume of the pile and the partition function is computed by the classical MacMahon formula or, more formally, by the determinant of Kasteleyn matrix. We use the expression for the partition function to derive the scaling behavior of free energy in the limit of lattice mesh tending to zero and temperature tending to infinity. We consider the cases of finite hexagonal domain, of infinite height box and coordinate-dependent Boltzmann weights. We obta…
Recently, properties of collective states of interacting non-abelian anyons have attracted a considerable attention. We study an extension of the `golden chain model', where two- and three-body interactions are competing. Upon fine-tuning the interaction, the model is integrable. This provides an additional integrable point of the model, on top of the integrable point, when the three-body interaction is absent. To solve the model, we construct a new, integrable height model, in the spirit of the restricted solid-on-solid model solved by Andrews, Baxter and Forrester. The heights in our model l…
We consider a model of weakly interacting, close-packed, dimers on the two-dimensional square lattice. In a previous paper, we computed both the multipoint dimer correlations, which display non-trivial critical exponents, continuously varying with the interaction strength; and the height fluctuations, which, after proper coarse graining and rescaling, converge to the massless Gaussian field with a suitable interaction-dependent pre-factor (`amplitude'). In this paper, we prove the identity between the critical exponent of the two-point dimer correlation and the amplitude of this massless Gauss…
We present a detailed study of a model of close-packed dimers on the square lattice with an interaction between nearest-neighbor dimers. The interaction favors parallel alignment of dimers, resulting in a low-temperature crystalline phase. With large-scale Monte Carlo and Transfer Matrix calculations, we show that the crystal melts through a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition to give rise to a high-temperature critical phase, with algebraic decays of correlations functions with exponents that vary continuously with the temperature. We give a theoretical interpretation of these results by map…
It is shown that dimers is Yang-Baxter integrable as a six-vertex model at the free-fermion point with crossing parameter $λ=\tfracπ{2}$. A one-to-many mapping of vertex onto dimer configurations allows the free-fermion solutions to be applied to the anisotropic dimer model on a square lattice where the dimers are rotated by 45 degrees compared to their usual orientation. This dimer model is exactly solvable in geometries of arbitrary finite size. In this paper, we establish and solve inversion identities for dimers with periodic boundary conditions on the cylinder. In the particle representat…
In this work, some classical results of the pfaffian theory of the dimer model based on the work of Kasteleyn, Fisher and Temperley are introduced in a fermionic framework. Then we shall detail the bosonic formulation of the model {\it via} the so-called height mapping and the nature of boundary conditions is unravelled. The complete and detailed fermionic solution of the dimer model on the square lattice with an arbitrary number of monomers is presented, and finite size effect analysis is performed to study surface and corner effects, leading to the extrapolation of the central charge of the …
We use Monte Carlo simulations to study properties of Anderson's resonating-valence-bond (RVB) spin-liquid state on the square lattice (i.e., the equal superposition of all pairing of spins into nearest-neighbor singlet pairs) and compare with the classical dimer model (CDM). The latter system also corresponds to the ground state of the Rokhsar-Kivelson quantum dimer model at its critical point. We find that although spin-spin correlations decay exponentially in the RVB, four-spin valence-bond-solid (VBS) correlations are critical, qualitatively like the well-known dimer-dimer correlations of …
We report a detailed analysis of the Drude weights for both thermal and spin transport in one dimensional spin-1/2 systems by means of exact diagonalization and analytic approaches at finite temperatures. Transport properties are studied first for the integrable XXZ model and second for various non-integrable systems such as the dimerized chain, the frustrated chain, and the spin ladder. We compare our results obtained by exact diagonalization and mean-field theory with the Bethe ansatz, bosonization and other numerical studies in the case of the anisotropic Heisenberg model both in the gaples…
We discuss a method of numerically identifying exact energy eigenstates for a finite system, whose form can then be obtained analytically. We demonstrate our method by identifying and deriving exact analytic expressions for several excited states, including an infinite tower, of the one dimensional spin-1 AKLT model, a celebrated non-integrable model. The states thus obtained for the AKLT model can be interpreted as one-to-an extensive number of quasiparticles on the ground state or on the highest excited state when written in terms of dimers. Included in these exact states is a tower of state…
We find by simulation that the interfaces in the exclusive-or (XOR) of two independent 2D Ising spin configurations at the critical temperature form an ensemble of loops that have the same distribution as the contour lines of the Gaussian free field, but with the heights of the contours spaced \sqrt{2} times as far apart as they are for the conformal loop ensemble CLE_4 or the double dimer model on the square lattice. For domains with boundary, various natural boundary conditions for the two Ising models correspond to certain boundary heights for the Gaussian free field.
We present an exactly solvable model of equal spin $s_1$ dimer single molecule magnets. The spins within each dimer interact via the Heisenberg and the most general quadratic global and local (single-ion) anisotropic spin interactions, and with the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. For antiferromagnetic couplings and $s_1>1/2$, the low temperature $T$ magnetization ${\bm M}({\bm B})$ exhibits $2s_1$ steps of universal height and midpoint slope, the $s$th step of which occurs at the non-universal level-crossing magnetic induction $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(θ,ϕ)$, where $θ,ϕ$ define the direction of ${\bm …
We consider the problem of constructing the stationary state following a quantum quench, using the exact overlaps for finite size integrable models. We focus on the isotropic Heisenberg spin chain with initial state Néel or Majumdar-Ghosh (dimer), although the proposed approach is valid for an arbitrary integrable model. We consider only eigenstates which do not contain zero-momentum strings because the latter are affected by fictitious singularities that are very difficult to take into account. We show that the fraction of eigenstates that do not contain zero-momentum strings is vanishing in …
Some of the exciting phenomena uncovered in strongly correlated systems in recent years - for instance quantum topological order, deconfined quantum criticality, and emergent gauge symmetries -- appear in systems in which the Hilbert space is effectively projected at low energies in a way that imposes local constraints on the original degrees of freedom. Cases in point include spin liquids, valence bond systems, dimer models, and vertex models. In this work, we use a slave boson description coupled to a large-$S$ path integral formulation to devise a generalised route to obtain effective field…
The Motzkin spin chain is a spin-1 model introduced in \cite{shor} as an example of a system exhibiting a high degree of quantum fluctuations whose ground state can be mapped to Motzkin paths that are generated with local equivalence moves. This model is difficult to solve in general but keeping just the height preserving local equivalence moves we show that the model becomes integrable which when projected to certain subspaces of the full Hilbert space is isomorphic to the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXX chain. In fact in the full Hilbert space the system is akin to two non-interacting spin-$\frac{1}{…
