We consider a process to create quasi long-range quantum discord between the non-interacting end spins of a quantum spin chain, with the end spins weakly coupled to the bulk of the chain. The process is not only capable of creating long-range quantum correlation but the latter remains frozen, when certain weak end-couplings are adiabatically varied below certain thresholds. We term this phenomenon as adiabatic freezing of quantum correlation. We observe that the freezing is robust to moderate thermal fluctuations and is intrinsically related to the cooperative properties of the quantum spin chain. In particular, we find that the energy gap of the system remains frozen for these adiabatic variations, and moreover, considering the end spins as probes, we show that the interval of freezing can detect the anisotropy transition in quantum XY spin chains. Importantly, the adiabatic freezing of long-range quantum correlations can be simulated with contemporary experimental techniques.
We report on ground state phases of a doped one-dimensional Hubbard model, which for large onsite interactions is governed by the $t$-$J$ Hamiltonian, where the extant entanglement is immutable under perturbative or sudden changes of system parameters, a phenomenon termed as adiabatic freezing. We observe that in the metallic Luttinger liquid phase of the model bipartite entanglement decays polynomially and is adiabatically frozen, in contrast to the variable, exponential decay in the phase-separation and superconducting spin-gap phases. Significantly, at low fixed electron densities, the spin…
We show how branching spin chains can be used to both generate and distribute entanglement from their natural dynamics. Such entanglement provides a useful resource, for example for teleportation or distributed quantum processing. Once distributed, this resource can be isolated through mapping or swapping the entanglement into specific qubits at the ends of branches. Alternatively, as we demonstrate for distributed bipartite entanglement, applying simple single-qubit operations to the end spin of one or more branches can dynamically freeze the entanglement at the branch ends.
We show how to freeze distributed entanglement that has been created from the natural dynamics of spin chain systems. The technique that we propose simply requires single-qubit operations and isolates the entanglement in specific qubits at the ends of branches. Such frozen entanglement provides a useful resource, for example for teleportation or distributed quantum processing. The scheme can be applied to a wide range of systems -- including actual spin systems and alternative qubit embodiments in strings of quantum dots, molecules or atoms.
We experimentally demonstrate the phenomenon of dynamical many-body freezing in a periodically driven Ising chain. Theoretically [Phys. Rev. B 82, 172402 (2010)], for certain values of the drive parameters all fundamental degrees of freedom contributing to the response dynamics freeze for all time and for arbitrary initial states. Also, since the condition of freezing involves only the drive parameters and not on the quantization of the momentum (i.e., the system-size), our simulation with a small (3-spin) chain captures all salient features of the freezing phenomenon predicted for the infinit…
We study the stroboscopic dynamics of a periodically driven finite Rydberg chain with staggered ($Δ$) and time-dependent uniform ($λ(t)$) detuning terms using exact diagonalization (ED). We show that at intermediate drive frequencies ($ω_D$), the presence of a finite $Δ$ results in violation of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) via clustering of Floquet eigenstates. Such clustering is lost at special commensurate drive frequencies for which $\hbar ω_d=n Δ$ ($n \in Z$) leading to restoration of ergodicity. The violation of ETH in these driven finite-sized chains is also evident fro…
We study the real-time dynamics of a quantum Ising chain driven periodically by instantaneous quenches of the transverse field (the transverse field varying as rectangular wave symmetric about zero). Two interesting phenomena are reported and analyzed: (1) We observe dynamical many-body freezing or DMF (Phys. Rev. B, vol. 82, 172402, 2010), i.e. strongly non-monotonic freezing of the response (transverse magnetization) with respect to the driving parameters (pulse width and height) resulting from equivocal freezing behavior of all the many-body modes. The freezing occurs due to coherent suppre…
It is shown that efficient and robust universal quantum computation is possible using the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage with a qubit chain as a pointer register.
A method for high-fidelity coherent adiabatic transport in a zig-zag tight-binding chain, based on application of two external periodic driving fields, is theoretically proposed. The method turns out to be robust against imperfections and disorder of the static lattice Hamiltonian, is tolerant to next-nearest neighborhood interactions, and enables coherent transport in long chains without the need for a local control and timing of the trapping potential.
We propose a method for quantum state transfer in spin chains using an adiabatic passage technique. Modifying even and odd nearest-neighbour couplings in time allows to achieve transfer fidelities arbitrarily close to one, without the need for a precise control of coupling strengths and timing. We study in detail transfer by adiabatic passage in a spin-1 chain governed by a generalized Heisenberg Hamiltonian. We consider optimization of the transfer process applying optimal control techniques. We discuss a realistic experimental implementation using cold atomic gases confined in deep optical l…
We present an adiabatic quantum algorithm for the abstract problem of searching marked vertices in a graph, or spatial search. Given a random walk (or Markov chain) $P$ on a graph with a set of unknown marked vertices, one can define a related absorbing walk $P'$ where outgoing transitions from marked vertices are replaced by self-loops. We build a Hamiltonian $H(s)$ from the interpolated Markov chain $P(s)=(1-s)P+sP'$ and use it in an adiabatic quantum algorithm to drive an initial superposition over all vertices to a superposition over marked vertices. The adiabatic condition implies that fo…
Many schemes to realize quantum state transfer in spin chains are not robust to random fluctuations in the spin-spin coupling strength. In efforts to achieve robust quantum state transfer, an adiabatic quantum population transfer scheme is proposed in this study. The proposed scheme makes use of a slowly moving external parabolic potential and is qualitatively explained in terms of the adiabatic following of a quantum state with a moving separatrix structure in the classical phase space of a pendulum analogy. Detailed aspects of our adiabatic population transfer scheme, including its robustnes…
We consider transformation from a closed to an open spin chain and vice versa produced by changing single link strength in a pair of neighboring spins. We show that in the non-adiabatic time domain fidelity of such a process can be increased by proper choosing of the control function for spin-spin exchange coupling. We obtain this function for an antiferromagnetic quantum Ising chain and present heuristic reasons restricting possible time-dependences of Hamiltonians applied for a high-fidelity control.
The path dependence of adiabatic evolution in classical harmonic chains with clamps is examined. It is shown that cutting and joining a chain may braid adiabatic normal mode frequencies. Accordingly, different adiabatic paths with the same endpoints may transport a normal mode to a different one, and an adiabatic cycle pumps action variables, i.e., the adiabatic invariants of integrable classical systems. Another adiabatic pump for artificial edge modes induced by clamps is shown as an application. Extensions to completely integrable systems and quantum systems are outlined.
Based on shortcuts to adiabaticity and quantum Zeno dynamics, we present a protocol to implement quantum state transfer (QST) in a quantum spin-1/2 chain. In the protocol, the complex Hamiltonian of an $N$-site system is simplified, and a simple effective Hamiltonian is present. It is shown that only the control of the coupling strengths between the boundary spins and the bulk spins are required for QST. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the protocol possesses high efficiency and is robust against the decay and the fluctuations of the control fields. The protocol might provide an alternat…
We introduce a scheme based on adiabatic passage that allows for long-range quantum communication through tight-binding chain with always-on interaction. By adiabatically varying the external gate voltage applied on the system, the electron can be transported from the sender's dot to the aim one.We numerically solve the Schrödinger equation for a system with a given number of quantum dots. It is shown that this scheme is a simple and efficient protocol to coherently manipulate the population transfer under suitable gate pulses. The dependence of the energy gap and the transfer time on system p…
We introduce an inhomogeneous protocol to drive a weakly disordered quantum spin chain quasi-adiabatically across a quantum phase transition and minimize the residual energy of the final state. The number of spins that simultaneously reach the critical point is controlled by the length scale in which the magnetic field is modulated, introducing an effective size that favors adiabatic dynamics. The dependence of the residual energy on this length scale and the velocity at which the magnetic field sweeps out the chain is shown to be nonmonotonic. We determine the conditions for an optimal suppre…
Physical implementations of quantum computation must be scrutinized about their reliability under real conditions, in order to be considered as viable candidates. Among the proposed models, those based on adiabatic quantum dynamics have shown great potential for solving specific tasks and have already been successfully implemented using superconducting devices. In this context, we address the issue of how the fabrication variations are expected to affect on average the computation results, when only dynamical effects occur. By simulating the dynamics of small-scale systems, it is found a consi…
This paper investigates numerically a phenomenon which can be used to transport a single q-bit down a J1-J2 Heisenberg spin chain using a quantum adiabatic process. The motivation for investigating such processes comes from the idea that this method of transport could potentially be used as a means of sending data to various parts of a quantum computer made of artificial spins, and that this method could take advantage of the easily prepared ground state at the so called Majumdar-Ghosh point. We examine several annealing protocols for this process and find similar result for all of them. The a…
In this paper we examine the use of an adiabatic quantum data transfer protocol to build a universal quantum computer. Single qubit gates are realized by using a bus protocol to transfer qubits of information down a spin chain with a unitary twist. This twist arises from altered couplings on the chain corresponding to unitary rotations performed on one region of the chain. We show how a controlled NOT gate can be realized by using a control qubit with Ising type coupling. The method discussed here can be extended to non-adiabatic quantum bus protocols. We also examine the potential of realizin…
In this paper, we study the localized states of a generic quadratic fermionic chain with finite-range couplings and an inhomogeneity in the hopping (defect) that breaks translational invariance. When the hopping of the defect vanishes, which represents an open chain, we obtain a simple bulk-edge correspondence: the zero-energy modes localized at the ends of the chain are related to the roots of a polynomial determined by the couplings of the Hamiltonian of the bulk. From this result, we define an index that characterizes the different topological phases of the system and can be easily computed…
A scheme based on Coherent Tunneling by Adiabatic Passage (CTAP) of exchange-only spin qubit quantum states in a linearly arranged double quantum dot chain is demonstrated. Logical states for the qubit are defined by adopting the spin state of three electrons confined in a double quantum dot. The possibility to obtain gate operations entirely with electrical manipulations makes this qubit a valuable architecture in the field of quantum computing for the implementation of quantum algorithms. The effect of the external control parameters as well as the effect of the dephasing on the coherent tun…
Long-distance fast and precise transfer of charge in semiconductor nanostructures is one of the goals for scalable electronic devices. We study theoretically the control of shuttling of an electron along a linear chain of semiconductor electrostatically-defined quantum dots by an electric field pulse with nonlinear time-dependent profile. We show that this essential nonlinearity along with shortcuts to adiabaticity techniques speed up the electron transfer with high fidelity, while still holding great robustness under spin-flip interactions and inhomogeneities in the couplings of the chain. A …
We inverse engineer fast rotations of a linear trap with two ions for a predetermined rotation angle and time, avoiding final excitation. Different approaches are analyzed and compared when the ions are of the same species or of different species. The separability into dynamical normal modes for equal ions in a common harmonic trap, or for different ions in non-harmonic traps with up to quartic terms allows for simpler computations of the rotation protocols. For non-separable scenarios, in particular for different ions in a harmonic trap, rotation protocols are also found using more costly num…
A simple technique for robust generation of vibrational Fock states in a chain of trapped ions is proposed. The method is fast and easy to implement, since only a single chirped laser pulse, simultaneously addressing all of the ions, is required. Furthermore, because the approach uses collective adiabatic passage, significant fluctuations in the intensity or frequency of the laser pulse can be tolerated, and the technique performs well even on the border of the Lamb-Dicke regime. We also demonstrate how this technique may be extended in order to create non-classical superposition states of the…
We propose and analyze, focusing on non-adiabatic effects, a technique of manipulating quantum spin systems based on local 'cutting' and 'stitching' of the Heisenberg exchange coupling between the spins. This first operation is cutting of a bond separating a single spin from a linear chain, or of two neighboring bonds for a ring-shaped array of spins. We show that the disconnected spin can be in the ground state with a high-fidelity even after a non-adiabatic process. Next, we consider inverse operation of stitching these bonds to increase the system size. We show that the optimal control algo…
Transporting quantum information is an important prerequisite for quantum computers. We study how this can be done in Heisenberg-coupled spin networks using adiabatic control over the coupling strengths. We find that qudits can be transferred and entangled pairs can be created between distant sites of bipartite graphs with a certain balance between the maximum spin of both parts, extending previous results that were limited to linear chains. The transfer fidelity in a small star-shaped network is numerically analysed, and possible experimental implementations are discussed.
We study the adiabatic quantum dynamics of an anisotropic spin-1 XY chain across a second order quantum phase transition. The system is driven out of equilibrium by performing a quench on the uniaxial single-spin anisotropy, that is supposed to vary linearly in time. We show that, for sufficiently large system sizes, the excess energy after the quench admits a non trivial scaling behavior that is not predictable by standard Kibble-Zurek arguments for isolated critical points or extended critical regions. This emerges from a competing effect of many accessible low-lying excited states, inside t…
We show that bipartite entanglement in a one-dimensional quantum spin model undergoing time-evolution under local Markovian environments can be frozen over time. We demonstrate this by using a number of paradigmatic quantum spin models in one dimension, including the anisotropic XY model in the presence of a uniform and an alternating transverse magnetic field (ATXY), the XXZ model, the XYZ model, and the $J_1-J_2$ model involving the next-nearest-neighbor interactions. We show that the length of the freezing interval, for a chosen pair of nearest-neighbor spins, may remain independent of the …
Semiconductor quantum-dot spin qubits are a promising platform for quantum computation, because they are scalable and possess long coherence times. In order to realize this full potential, however, high-fidelity information transfer mechanisms are required for quantum error correction and efficient algorithms. Here, we present evidence of adiabatic quantum-state transfer in a chain of semiconductor quantum-dot electron spins. By adiabatically modifying exchange couplings, we transfer single- and two-spin states between distant electrons in less than 127 ns. We also show that this method can be…
Adiabatic gauge potential is the origin of nonadiabatic transitions. In counterdiabatic driving, which is a method of shortcuts to adiabaticity, adiabatic gauge potential can be used to realize identical dynamics to adiabatic time evolution without requiring slow change of parameters. We introduce an algebraic expression of adiabatic gauge potential. Then, we find that the explicit form of adiabatic gauge potential can be easily determined by some algebraic calculations. We demonstrate this method by using a single-spin system, a two-spin system, and the transverse Ising chain. Moreover, we de…
Despite tremendous theoretical efforts to understand subtleties of the many-body localization (MBL) transition, many questions remain open, in particular concerning its critical properties. Here we make the key observation that MBL in one dimension is accompanied by a spin freezing mechanism which causes chain breakings in the thermodynamic limit. Using analytical and numerical approaches, we show that such chain breakings directly probe the typical localization length, and that their scaling properties at the MBL transition agree with the Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario predicted by phenomenolog…
Driving a homogeneous system across a quantum phase transition in a quench-time $τ_Q$ generates excitations on wavelengths longer than the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) length $\hatξ\proptoτ_Q^{ν/(1+zν)}$ within the KZ time window $\hat t\proptoτ_Q^{zν/(1+zν)}$, where $z$ and $ν$ are the critical exponents. Quenches designed with local time-dependent inhomogeneity can introduce a gap in the spectrum. For a variety of setups with short-range interactions, they have been shown to suppress excitations if the spatial velocity of the inhomogenous front is below the characteristic KZ velocity $\hat v \propto \h…
We consider an inhomogeneous quantum phase transition across a multicritical point of the XY quantum spin chain. This is an example of a Lifshitz transition with a dynamical exponent z = 2. Just like in the case z = 1 considered in New J. Phys. 12, 055007 (2010) when a critical front propagates much faster than the maximal group velocity of quasiparticles vq, then the transition is effectively homogeneous: density of excitations obeys a generalized Kibble-Zurek mechanism and scales with the sixth root of the transition rate. However, unlike for z = 1, the inhomogeneous transition becomes adiab…
Coherent Tunneling Adiabatic Passage (CTAP) has been proposed as a long-range physical qubit transport mechanism in solid-state quantum computing architectures. Although the mechanism can be implemented in either a chain of quantum dots or donors, a 1D chain of donors in Si is of particular interest due to the natural confining potential of donors that can in principle help reduce the gate densities in solid-state quantum computing architectures. Using detailed atomistic modeling, we investigate CTAP in a more realistic triple donor system in the presence of inevitable fabrication imperfection…
The design of new quantum algorithms has proven to be an extremely difficult task. This paper considers a different approach to the problem, by studying the problem of 'quantum state generation'. This approach provides intriguing links between many different areas: quantum computation, adiabatic evolution, analysis of spectral gaps and groundstates of Hamiltonians, rapidly mixing Markov chains, the complexity class statistical zero knowledge, quantum random walks, and more. We first show that many natural candidates for quantum algorithms can be cast as a state generation problem. We define a …
We propose a simple technique for the generation of arbitrary-sized Dicke states in a chain of trapped ions. The method uses global addressing of the entire chain by two pairs of delayed but partially overlapping laser pulses to engineer a collective adiabatic passage along a multi-ion dark state. Our technique, which is a many-particle generalization of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), is decoherence-free with respect to spontaneous emission and robust against moderate fluctuations in the experimental parameters. Furthermore, because the process is very rapid, the effects of heati…
For a finite XY chain and a finite two-dimensional Ising lattice, it is shown that the paramagnetic ground state is adiabatically transformed to the GHZ state in the ferromagnetic phase by slowly turning on the magnetic field. The fidelity between the GHZ state and an adiabatically evolved state shows a feature of the quantum phase transition.
We investigate the performance of superconducting flux qubits for the adiabatic quantum simulation of long distance entanglement (LDE), namely a finite ground-state entanglement between the end spins of a quantum spin chain with open boundary conditions. As such, LDE can be considered an elementary precursor of edge modes and topological order. We discuss two possible implementations which simulate open chains with uniform bulk and weak end bonds, either with Ising or with XX nearest-neighbor interactions. In both cases we discuss a suitable protocol for the adiabatic preparation of the ground…
Adiabatic transport of information is a widely invoked resource in connection with quantum information processing and distribution. The study of adiabatic transport via spin-half chains or clusters is standard in the literature, while in practice the true realisation of a completely isolated two-level quantum system is not achievable. We explore here, theoretically, the extension of spin-half chain models to higher spins. Considering arrangements of three spin-one particles, we show that adiabatic transport, specifically a generalisation of the Dark State Adiabatic Passage procedure, is applic…
We present here our study of the adiabatic quantum dynamics of a random Ising chain across its quantum critical point. The model investigated is an Ising chain in a transverse field with disorder present both in the exchange coupling and in the transverse field. The transverse field term is proportional to a function $Γ(t)$ which, as in the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, is linearly reduced to zero in time with a rate $τ^{-1}$, $Γ(t)=-t/τ$, starting at $t=-\infty$ from the quantum disordered phase ($Γ=\infty$) and ending at $t=0$ in the classical ferromagnetic phase ($Γ=0$). We first analyze the dist…
Motivated by recent progress in the experimental manipulation of cold atoms in optical lattices, we study three different protocols for non-adiabatic quantum state preparation and state transport in chains of Rydberg atoms. The protocols we discuss are based on the blockade mechanism between atoms which, when excited to a Rydberg state, interact through a van der Waals potential, and rely on single-site addressing. Specifically, we discuss protocols for efficient creation of an antiferromagnetic GHZ state, a class of matrix product states including a so-called Rydberg crystal and for the state…
The shift of interest from general purpose quantum computers to adiabatic quantum computing or quantum annealing calls for a broadly applicable and easy to implement test to assess how quantum or adiabatic is a specific hardware. Here we propose such a test based on an exactly solvable many body system -- the quantum Ising chain in transverse field -- and implement it on the D-Wave machine. An ideal adiabatic quench of the quantum Ising chain should lead to an ordered broken symmetry ground state with all spins aligned in the same direction. An actual quench can be imperfect due to decoherence…
A protocol for generating Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a system of $N$ coupled qubits is proposed. The Hamiltonian model assumes $N$-wise interactions between the $N$ qubits and the presence of a controllable time-dependent field acting upon one spin only. Implementing such a scenario is in the experimental reach. The dynamical problem is exactly solved thanks to the symmetries of the Hamiltonian model. The possibility of generating GHZ states under both adiabatic and non-adiabatic conditions is shown and discussed in detail.
We prove that adiabatic computation is equivalent to standard quantum computation even when the adiabatic quantum system is restricted to be a set of particles on a one-dimensional chain. We give a construction that uses a 2-local Hamiltonian on nearest neighbors using particles that can have ten distinct states. This implies a construction of a one-dimensional chain of qubits in which the Hamiltonian is 6-local. We adapt this construction to show that the 2-local Hamiltonian for 13-state particles is QMA-complete which in turn implies that the 8-local Hamiltonian restricted to a one-dimension…
In the context of slow quenching dynamics of a $p$-wave superconducting chain, it has been shown that a Majorana edge state can not be adiabatically transported from one topological phase to the other separated by a quantum critical line. On the other hand, the inclusion of a phase factor in the hopping term, that breaks the extended time reversal invariance, results in an extended gapless region between two topological phases. We show that for a finite chain with an open boundary condition there exists a non-zero probability that an edge Majorana can be adiabatically transported from one topo…
The geometric phase associated with a many body ground state exhibits a signature of quantum phase transition. In this context, we have studied the behaviour of the geometric phase during a linear quench caused by a gradual turning off of the magnetic field interacting with a spin chain.
We investigate the mechanism of heat conduction in ordered and disordered harmonic onedimensional chains within the quantum mechanical Langevin method. In the case of the disordered chains we find indications for normal heat conduction which means that there is a finite temperature gradient but we cannot clearly decide whether the heat resistance increases linearly with the chain length. Furthermore we observe characteristic quantum mechanical features like Bose-Einstein statistics of the occupation numbers of the normal modes, freezing of the heat conductivity and the influence of the entangl…
We propose a fast and robust quantum state transfer protocol employing a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain, where the interchain couplings vary in time. Based on simple considerations around the terms involved in the definition of the adiabatic invariant, we construct an exponential time-driving function that successfully takes advantage of resonant effects to speed up the transfer process. Using optimal control theory, we confirm that the proposed time-driving function is close to optimal. To unravel the crucial aspects of our construction, we proceed to a comparison with two other protocols. One wh…
This document presents a studies of the stochastic behavior of D-Wave qubits, qubit cells, and qubit chains. The purpose of this paper is to address the algorithmic behavior of execution rather than the physical behavior, though they are related. The measurements from an actual D-Wave adiabatic quantum computer are compare with calculated measurements from a theoretical adiabatic quantum computer running with an effective temperature of zero. In this way the paper attempts to shed light on how the D-Wave's behavior effects how well it minimizes its objective function and why the D-Wave perform…
