We present examples of non-Gaussian statistics that can induce bispectra matching local and non-local (including equilateral) templates in biased sub-volumes. We find cases where the biasing from coupling to long wavelength modes affects only the power spectrum, only the bispectrum or both. Our results suggest that ruling out multi-field scenarios is quite difficult: some measurements of the scalar correlations, including the shape of the bispectrum, can be consistent with single-clock predictions even when cosmic variance from super-horizon modes is at work. Furthermore, if observations of the density perturbations rule out single-clock inflation, we will face a serious cosmic variance obstacle in drawing any further conclusions about the particle physics origin of the scalar fluctuations.
We examine the potential of polarization bispectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to constrain primordial magnetic fields (PMFs). We compute all possible bispectra between temperature and polarization anisotropies sourced by PMFs and show that they are weakly correlated with well-known local-type and secondary ISW-lensing bispectra. From a Fisher analysis it is found that, owing to E-mode bispectra, in a cosmic-variance-limited experiment the expected uncertainty in the amplitude of magnetized bispectra is 80% improved in comparison with an analysis in terms of temperature auto-bispe…
We explore the use of galaxy bispectra with multitracer technique as a possible probe of primordial non-Gaussianities. We forecast future constraints on non-linearity parameters, $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq}$ and $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth}$, which respectively characterize the equilateral- and orthogonal-types primordial bispectra, and show that the multitracer analysis would be effective with reducing the cosmic-variance noise if the number density of galaxies is high enough. We find that the measurement of galaxy bispectrum by future galaxy surveys can reach the constraints on the non-local type primord…
Cosmological weak lensing is the powerful probe of cosmology. Here we address one of the most fundamental, statistical questions inherent in weak lensing cosmology: whether or not we can recover the initial Gaussian information content of large-scale structure by combining the weak lensing observables, here focused on the weak lensing power spectrum and bispectrum. To address this question we fully take into account correlations between the power spectra of different multipoles and the bispectra of different triangle configurations, measured from a finite area survey. In particular we show tha…
Radio interferometric experiments aim to constrain the reionization model parameters by measuring the 21-cm signal statistics, primarily the power spectrum. However the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) 21-cm signal is highly non-Gaussian, and this non-Gaussianity encodes important information about this era. The bispectrum is the lowest order statistic able to capture this inherent non-Gaussianity. Here we are the first to demonstrate that bispectra for large and intermediate length scales and for all unique $k$-triangle shapes provide tighter constraints on the EoR parameters compared to the power…
I review what bispectra and trispectra look like in real space, in terms of the sign of particular shaped triangles and tetrahedrons. Having an equilateral density bispectrum of positive sign corresponds to having concentrated overdensities surrounded by larger weaker underdensities. In 3D these are concentrated density filaments, as expected in large-scale structure. As the shape changes from equilateral to flattened the concentrated overdensities flatten into lines (3D planes). I then focus on squeezed bispectra, which can be thought of as correlations of changes in small-scale power with la…
[Abridged] A sharp cut-off in the primordial scalar power spectrum on large scales has been known to improve the fit to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data when compared to the more standard, nearly scale invariant power spectrum that arises in slow roll inflation. In an earlier work, we had numerically investigated the characteristics of the scalar bispectrum generated in models with kinetically dominated initial conditions. In this work, we compare the scenario with two other competing scenarios (viz. punctuated inflation and a model due to Starobinsky) which also suppress the scalar …
We address the amount of information in the non-Gaussian regime of weak lensing surveys by modelling all relevant covariances of the power spectra and bispectra, using 1000 ray-tracing simulation realizations for a Lambda-CDM model and an analytical halo model. We develop a formalism to describe the covariance matrices of power spectra and bispectra of all triangle configurations. In addition to the known contributions which extend up to six-point correlation functions, we propose a new contribution `the halo sample variance (HSV)' arising from the coupling of the lensing Fourier modes with la…
Lensing of the CMB generates a significant bispectrum, which should be detected by the Planck satellite at the 5-sigma level and is potentially a non-negligible source of bias for f_NL estimators of local non-Gaussianity. We extend current understanding of the lensing bispectrum in several directions: (1) we perform a non-perturbative calculation of the lensing bispectrum which is ~10% more accurate than previous, first-order calculations; (2) we demonstrate how to incorporate the signal variance of the lensing bispectrum into estimates of its amplitude, providing a good analytical explanation…
To investigate and specify the statistical properties of cosmological fields with particular attention to possible non-Gaussian features, accurate formulae for the bispectrum and the bispectrum covariance are required. The bispectrum is the lowest-order statistic providing an estimate for non-Gaussianities of a distribution, and the bispectrum covariance depicts the errors of the bispectrum measurement and their correlation on different scales. Currently, there do exist fitting formulae for the bispectrum and an analytical expression for the bispectrum covariance, but the former is not very ac…
We study the effect of weak lensing by cosmic (super-)strings on the higher-order statistics of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). A cosmic string segment is expected to cause weak lensing as well as an integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, the so-called Gott-Kaiser-Stebbins (GKS) effect, to the CMB temperature fluctuation, which are thus naturally cross-correlated. We point out that, in the presence of such a correlation, yet another kind of the post-recombination CMB temperature bispectra, the ISW-lensing bispectra, will arise in the form of products of the auto- and cross-power spectra. …
We compute the cosmic microwave background temperature bispectrum generated by nonlinearities at recombination on all scales. We use CosmoLib$2^{\rm nd}$, a numerical Boltzmann code at second-order to compute CMB bispectra on the full sky. We consistently include all effects except gravitational lensing, which can be added to our result using standard methods. The bispectrum is peaked on squeezed triangles and agrees with the analytic approximation in the squeezed limit at the few per cent level for all the scales where this is applicable. On smaller scales, we recover previous results on pert…
We develop and study the position-dependent bispectrum. It is a generalization of the recently proposed position-dependent power spectrum method of measuring the squeezed-limit bispectrum. The position-dependent bispectrum can similarly be used to measure the squeezed-limit trispectrum in which one of the wavelengths is much longer than the other three. In this work, we will mainly consider the case in which the three smaller wavelengths are nearly the same (the equilateral configuration). We use the Fisher information matrix to forecast constraints on bias parameters and the amplitude of prim…
Recent local measurements of the Hubble constant made using supernovae have delivered a value that differs by $\sim$5$σ$ (statistical error) from predictions using the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), or using Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraints, which are themselves consistent. The effective volume covered by the supernovae is small compared to the other probes, and it is therefore interesting to consider whether sample variance (often also called cosmic variance) is a significant contributor to the offset. We consider four ways of calculating t…
Fluctuations with wavelengths larger than the volume of a galaxy survey affect the measurement of the galaxy power spectrum within the survey itself. In the presence of local Primordial Non- Gaussianities (PNG), in addition to the super-sample matter density and tidal fluctuations, the large-scale gravitational potential also induces a modulation of the observed power spectrum. In this work we investigate this modulation by computing for the first time the response of the redshift-space galaxy power spectrum to the presence of a long wavelength gravitational potential, fully accounting for the…
A measurement of primordial non-gaussianity will be of paramount importance to distinguish between different models of inflation. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy observations have set unprecedented bounds on the non-gaussianity parameter f_NL but the interesting regime f_NL <~ 1 is beyond their reach. Brightness-temperature fluctuations in the 21-cm line during the dark ages (z ~ 30-100) are a promising successor to CMB studies, giving access to a much larger number of modes. They are, however, intrinsically non-linear, which results in secondary non-gaussianities orders of magnit…
The current $>3σ$ tension between the Hubble constant $H_0$ measured from local distance indicators and from cosmic microwave background is one of the most highly debated issues in cosmology, as it possibly indicates new physics or unknown systematics. In this work, we explore whether this tension can be alleviated by the sample variance in the local measurements, which use a small fraction of the Hubble volume. We use a large-volume cosmological $N$-body simulation to model the local measurements and to quantify the variance due to local density fluctuations and sample selection. We explicitl…
The next generation of ground-based CMB experiments aim to measure temperature and polarization fluctuations up to $\ell_{\rm max} \approx 5000$ over half of the sky. Combined with Planck data on large scales, this will provide improved constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity. However, the impressive resolution of these experiments will come at a price. Besides signal confusion from galactic foregrounds, extra-galactic foregrounds and late-time gravitational effects, gravitational lensing will introduce large non-Gaussianity that can become the leading contribution to the bispectrum covarian…
If cosmological perturbations in our Hubble sized volume are nongaussian, then they will be coupled to any larger perturbation modes outside our Hubble volume. This has important consequences for modeling inflation: the scalar power spectrum and spectral index measured in our Hubble volume would depend on an adjacent background of super Hubble perturbations. In other words, a detection of nongaussianity implies a possible portal to the superhorizon. By the same token, ruling out nongaussianity would rule out the possibility that the power spectrum's size and running are accidents of super cosm…
We show that the relativistic effects are negligibly small in the non-linear density and velocity bispectra. Although the non-linearities of Einstein equation introduce additional non-linear terms to the Newtonian fluid equations, the corrections to the bispectrum only show up on super-horizon scales. We show this with the next-to-leading order non-linear bispectrum for a pressureless fluid in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background, by calculating the density and velocity fields up to fourth order. We work in the comoving gauge, where the dynamics is identical to the Newtonian up to seco…
If the entire post-inflationary patch is large compared to our Hubble volume even a small level of non-Gaussianity can cause statistics of the primordial curvature field in our Hubble volume to be biased by mode-coupling. We explicitly compute the variation of locally measured statistics of the primordial curvature $ζ$ from non-Gaussian mode coupling within a specific inflationary scenario: the curvaton model with a quadratic curvaton potential. This "super cosmic variance" is calculated in two ways: (i) as a super observer who has access to the curvature perturbation field across the entire p…
If long wavelength primordial tensor modes are coupled to short wavelength scalar modes, the scalar curvature two-point function will have an off-diagonal component. This `fossil' remnant is a signature of a mode coupling that cannot be achieved in single clock inflation. Any constraint on its presence allows a cross check of the relationship between the dynamical generation of the fluctuations and the evolution of the inflationary background. We use the example of non-Bunch Davies initial states for the tensor and scalar modes to demonstrate that physically reasonable fossils, consistent with…
We use large N-body simulations and empirical scaling relations between dark matter halos, galaxies, and supermassive black holes to estimate the formation rates of supermassive black hole binaries and the resulting low-frequency stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB). We find this GWB to be relatively insensitive ($\lesssim10\%$) to cosmological parameters, with only slight variation between WMAP5 and Planck cosmologies. We find that uncertainty in the astrophysical scaling relations changes the amplitude of the GWB by a factor of $\sim 2$. Current observational limits are already con…
We address the $\simeq 4.4σ$ tension between local and the CMB measurements of the Hubble Constant using simulated Type Ia Supernova (SN) data-sets. We probe its directional dependence by means of a hemispherical comparison through the entire celestial sphere as an estimator of the $H_0$ cosmic variance. We perform Monte Carlo simulations assuming isotropic and non-uniform distributions of data points, the latter coinciding with the real data. This allows us to incorporate observational features, such as the sample incompleteness, in our estimation. We obtain that this tension can be alleviate…
