We provide calculations and theoretical arguments supporting the emission of electromagnetic radiation from charged particles accelerated by gravitational waves (GWs). These waves have significant indirect evidence to support their existence, yet they interact weakly with ordinary matter. We show that the induced oscillations of charged particles interacting with a GW, which lead to the emission of electromagnetic radiation, will also result in wave attenuation. These ideas are supported by a small body of literature, as well as additional arguments for particle acceleration based on GW memory effects. We derive order of magnitude power calculations for various initial charge distributions accelerated by GWs. The resulting power emission is extremely small for all but very strong GWs interacting with large quantities of charge. If the results here are confirmed and supplemented, significant consequences such as attenuation of early universe GWs could result. Additionally, this effect could extend GW detection techniques into the electromagnetic regime. These explorations are worthy of study to determine the presence of such radiation, as it is extremely important to refine our theoretical framework in an era of active GW astrophysics.
Various aspects of the C-metric representing two rotating charged black holes accelerated in opposite directions are summarized and its limits are considered. A particular attention is paid to the special-relativistic limit in which the electromagnetic field becomes the "magic field" of two oppositely accelerated rotating charged relativistic discs. When the acceleration vanishes the usual electromagnetic magic field of the Kerr-Newman black hole with gravitational constant set to zero arises. Properties of the accelerated discs and the fields produced are studied and illustrated graphically. …
Classical radiation from an accelerated charge is reviewed along with the reciprocal topic of accelerated observers detecting radiation from a static charge. This review commemerates Bahram Mashhoon's 60th birthday.
The radiation reaction fields are calculated for an accelerated changing dipole in scalar and electromagnetic radiation fields. The acceleration reaction is shown to alter the damping of a time varying dipole in the EM case, but not the scalar case. In the EM case, the dipole radiation reaction field can exert a force on an accelerated monopole charge associated with the accelerated dipole. The radiation reaction of an accelerated charge does not exert a torque on an accelerated magnetic dipole, but an accelerated dipole does exert a force on the charge. The technique used is that originally d…
We develop a geometrical framework that allows to obtain the electromagnetic field quantities in accelerated frames. The frame of arbitrary accelerated observers in space-time is defined by a suitable set of tetrad fields, whose timelike components are adapted to the worldlines of a field of observers. We consider the Faraday tensor and Maxwell's equations as abstract tensor quantities in space-time, and make use of tetrad fields to project the electromagnetic field quantities in the accelerated frames. As an application, plane and spherical electromagnetic waves are projected in linearly acce…
We consider the equation of motion of a charged particle or a charged compact object in curved space-time, under the reaction of electromagnetic radiation and also consider a physical situation such that the charged particle or compact object emits gravitational radiation, thereby gravitational radiation reaction also acts on it. We investigate the effect of this metric perturbation i.e. the gravitational radiation on the electromagnetic self-force. We show that, besides the interaction terms derived by P. Zimmerman and E. Poisson (Phys. Rev. D 90, 084030, 2014), additional perturbative terms …
We address the old question of whether or not a uniformly accelerated charged particle radiates, and consequently, if weak equivalence principle is violated by electrodynamics. We show that radiation has different meanings; some absolute, some relative. Detecting photons or electromagnetic waves is NOT absolute, it depends both on the electromagnetic field and on the state of motion of the antenna. An antenna used by a Rindler observer does not detect any radiation from a uniformly accelerated co-moving charged particle. Therefore, a Rindler observer cannot decide whether or not he is in an ac…
Electromagnetic field produced by magnetic multipoles in hyperbolic motion is derived and compared with electromagnetic field produced by electric multipoles in hyperbolic motion. The resulting fields are related by duality symmetry. Radiative properties of these solutions are demonstrated. In the second part an analogous, uniformly accelerated source of gravitational radiation is studied, within exact Einstein's theory. Radiative characteristics of the corresponding solution as flux of the radiation and the total mass-energy of the system are calculated and graphically illustrated.
The scalar and electromagnetic fields produced by the geodesic and uniformly accelerated discrete charges in de Sitter spacetime are constructed by employing the conformal relation between de Sitter and Minkowski space. A special attention is paid to new effects arising in spacetimes which, like de Sitter space, have spacelike conformal infinities. Under the presence of particle and event horizons, purely retarded fields (appropriately defined) become necessarily singular or even cannot be constructed at the "creation light cones" -- future light cones of the "points" at which the sources "ent…
Frame dragging (Lense-Thirring effect) is generally associated with rotating astrophysical objects. However, it can also be generated by electromagnetic fields if electric and magnetic fields are simultaneously present. In most models of astrophysical objects, macroscopic charge neutrality is assumed and the entire electromagnetic field is characterized in terms of a magnetic dipole component. Hence, the purely electromagnetic contribution to the frame dragging vanishes. However, strange stars may posses independent electric dipole and neutron stars independent electric quadrupole moments that…
We analyze the properties of the electric and magnetic fields in different reference frames within a cosmological background space-time. First, we investigate the conformal properties of the electromagnetic fields and charge currents, discussing how the spatial curvature of the universe affects the field on different scales. Then, we analyze the effects of the expansion of the universe on local electromagnetic sources using Fermi coordinates. In particular, we investigate the energy balance and Poynting flux in this locally defined reference frame. We show that a charge following the Hubble fl…
This paper is devoted to study the phase space analysis of isotropic and homogenous universe model by taking a noninteracting mixture of electromagnetic and viscous radiating fluids whose viscous pressure satisfies a nonlinear version of the Israel-Stewart transport equation. We establish an autonomous system of equations by introducing normalized dimensionless variables. In order to analyze stability of the system, we find corresponding critical points for different values of the parameters. We also evaluate power-law scale factor whose behavior indicates different phases of the universe mode…
We investigate, in the framework of open quantum systems, the entanglement dynamics of two circularly accelerated two-level atoms with the same centripetal acceleration interacting with a bath of fluctuating electromagnetic fields in the Minkowski vacuum. We assume that the two atoms rotate synchronically with their separation perpendicular to the rotating plane, and study the entanglement degradation, creation, revival, and enhancement by solving the Markovian master equation. In contrast to the scalar-field case, the entanglement dynamics is crucially dependent on the atomic polarizations in…
Maxwell's equations are formulated in arbitrary moving frames by means of tetrad fields, which are interpreted as reference frames adapted to observers in space-time. We assume the existence of a general distribution of charges and currents in an inertial frame. Tetrad fields are used to project the electromagnetic fields and sources on accelerated frames. The purpose is to study several configurations of fields and observers that in the literature are understood as paradoxes. For instance, are the two situations, (i) an accelerated charge in an inertial frame, and (ii) a charge at rest in an …
Astronomical observations have shown that the expansion of the universe is at present accelerating, consistently with a constant negative pressure or tension. This is a major puzzle because we do not understand why this tension is so small compared to the Planck density; why, being so small, it is not exactly zero; and why it has precisely the required value to make the expansion start accelerating just at the epoch when we are observing the universe. The recently proposed conjecture by Afshordi that black holes create a gravitational aether owing to quantum gravity effects, which may be ident…
The description of physical processes in accelerated frames opens a window to numerous new phenomena. One can encounter these effects both in the subatomic world and on a macroscale. In the present work we review our recent results on the study of the electroweak interaction of particles with an accelerated background matter. In our analysis we choose the noninertial comoving frame, where matter is at rest. Our study is based on the solution of the Dirac equation, which exactly takes into account both the interaction with matter and the nonintertial effects. First, we study the interaction of …
We investigate the entanglement dynamics of two uniformly accelerated atoms with the same acceleration perpendicular to their separation. The two-atom system is treated as an open system coupled with fluctuating electromagnetic fields in the Minkowski vacuum, and in the Born-Markov approximation the master equation that describes the completely positive time evolution of the two-atom system is derived. In particular, we investigate the phenomena of entanglement degradation, generation, revival and enhancement. As opposed to the scalar-field case, the entanglement dynamics is crucially dependen…
This paper deals thoroughly with the scalar and electromagnetic fields of uniformly accelerated charges in de Sitter spacetime. It gives details and makes various extensions of our Physical Review Letter from 2002. The basic properties of the classical Born solutions representing two uniformly accelerated charges in flat spacetime are first summarized. The worldlines of uniformly accelerated particles in de Sitter universe are defined and described in a number of coordinate frames, some of them being of cosmological significance, the other are tied naturally to the particles. The scalar and el…
We consider a multilevel hydrogen atom in interaction with the quantum electromagnetic field and separately calculate the contributions of the vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction to the rate of change of the mean atomic energy of the atom for uniform acceleration. It is found that the acceleration disturbs the vacuum fluctuations in such a way that the delicate balance between the contributions of vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction that exists for inertial atoms is broken, so that the transitions to higher-lying states from ground state are possible even in vacuum. In contrast to …
Theories of non-linear electrodynamics naturally describe deviations from Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Among these, of special interest is the recently discovered ModMax electrodynamics, which is a unique 1-parametric generalization of Maxwell's theory that possesses the conformal invariance as well as the electromagnetic duality. In this paper we construct the asymptotically AdS accelerated black holes in this theory and study their thermodynamics - providing thus a first example of accelerated solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. Our study opens a window towards s…
A new model of nonlinear electromagnetic fields possessing a dimensional parameter $β$ is proposed. Electromagnetic fields are considered as the source of the gravitation field and accelerated expansion of the universe is driven by nonlinear electromagnetic fields. We consider the magnetic universe and the stochastic magnetic field is a source of the universe acceleration. After the universe inflation and the accelerated expansion the universe decelerates. We show the causality of the model and a classical stability at the deceleration phase. The spectral index, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and…
A pair of wave equations is presented for the gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations of a charged black hole. One of the equations is uncoupled and determines the propagation of the electromagnetic perturbation. The other is for the propagation of the shear of a principal null direction and has a source term given by the solution of the first equation. This result is expected to have important applications in astrophysical models.
We compare the behavior of a charged particle in a gravitational field and empty space. We resolve the apparent conflict between the Lorentz-Dirac equation and Larmor's formula of radiation by noting that the former describes an electron that is itself accelerated by an electromagnetic field. If instead, a hypothetical particle is considered that is accelerated by a non-electromagnetic force, Larmor's formula is found to be consistent with the accelerating particle's equation of motion. We consider the consequences concerning the equivalence principle and find that it is indeed violated if one…
We show that in the realm of general relativity a non minimal coupling between the electromagnetic and the gravitational fields may produce an era of accelerated expansion.
We study the resonance interaction between two uniformly accelerated identical atoms, one excited and the other in the ground state, prepared in a correlated (symmetric or antisymmetric) state and interacting with the scalar field or the electromagnetic field in the vacuum state. In this case (resonance interaction), the interatomic interaction is a second-order effect in the atom-field coupling. We separate the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the resonance energy shift of the system, and show that only radiation reaction contributes, while Unruh thermal fluctuat…

We consider the self-force on a charged particle moving in a curved spacetime with a background electromagnetic field, extending previous studies to situations in which gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations are comparable. The formal expression $f^{ret}_α$ for the self-force on a particle, written in terms of the retarded perturbed fields, is divergent, and a renormalization is needed to find the particle's acceleration at linear order in its mass $m$ and charge $e$. We assume that, as in previous work in a Lorenz gauge, the renormalization for accelerated motion comprises an angle a…
Within the framework of general relativity, we investigate the tidal acceleration of astrophysical jets relative to the central collapsed configuration ("Kerr source"). We neglect electromagnetic forces throughout. The rest frame of the Kerr source is locally defined via the set of hypothetical static observers in the spacetime exterior to the source. Relative to such a fiducial observer fixed on the rotation axis of the Kerr source, jet particles are tidally accelerated to almost the speed of light if their outflow speed is above a certain threshold, given roughly by one half of the Newtonian…
Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) may not always reside right at the centers of their host galaxies. This is a prediction of numerical relativity simulations, which imply that the newly formed single SMBH, after binary coalescence in a galaxy merger, can receive kick velocities up to several 1000 km/s due to anisotropic emission of gravitational waves. Long-lived oscillations of the SMBHs in galaxy cores, and in rare cases even SMBH ejections from their host galaxies, are the consequence. Observationally, accreting recoiling SMBHs would appear as quasars spatially and/or kinematically off-set f…
We analyze a new class of static exact solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity with arbitrary scalar coupling constant $α$, representing a gravitational body endowed with electromagnetic dipole moment. This class possesses mass, dipole and scalar charge parameters. A discussion of the geodesic motion shows that the scalar field interaction is so weak that it cannot be measured in gravitational fields like the sun, but it could perhaps be detected in gravitational fields like pulsars. The scalar force can be attractive or repulsive. This gives rise to the hypothesis that the magnetic fiel…
Gravitational waves from astrophysical sources can interact with background electromagnetic fields, giving rise to distinctive and potentially detectable electromagnetic signatures. In this paper, we study such interactions for far-field gravitational radiation using the 1+3 approach to relativity. Linearised equations for the electromagnetic field on perturbed Minkowski space are derived and solved analytically. The inverse Gertsenshtein conversion of gravitational waves in a static electromagnetic field is rederived, and the resultant electromagnetic radiation is shown to be significant for …
Modeling the late inspiral and merger of supermassive black holes is central to understanding accretion processes and the conditions under which electromagnetic emission accompanies gravitational waves. We use fully general relativistic, hydrodynamics simulations to investigate how electromagnetic signatures correlate with black hole spins, mass ratios, and the gaseous environment in this final phase of binary evolution. In all scenarios, we find some form of characteristic electromagnetic variability whose pattern depends on the spins and binary mass ratios. Binaries in hot accretion flows ex…
Radiation from a mirror moving in vacuum electromagnetic fields is shown to vanish in the case of a uniformly accelerated motion. Such motions are related to conformal coordinate transformations, which preserve correlation functions characteristic of vacuum fluctuations. As a result, vacuum fluctuations remain invariant under reflection upon a uniformly accelerated mirror, which therefore does not radiate and experiences no radiation reaction force. Mechanical effects of vacuum fluctuations thus exhibit an invariance with respect to uniformly accelerated motions.
We study the spontaneous excitation of a uniformly accelerated two-level atom non-linearly coupled with vacuum Dirac field fluctuations using the formalism proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji (DDC) and generalized to the present case in the current paper. We find that a cross term involving both vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction appears, which is absent in the linear coupling cases such as an atom interacting with vacuum scalar or electromagnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, the contribution of this term actually dominates over that of radiation reaction. Thus, the mean…
We discuss a cornucopia of potential astrophysical signatures and constraints on magnetically charged black holes of various masses. As recently highlighted, being potentially viable astrophysical candidates with immense electromagnetic fields, they may be ideal windows to fundamental physics, electroweak symmetry restoration and non-perturbative quantum field theoretic phenomena. We investigate various potential astrophysical pointers and bounds -- including limits on charges, location of stable orbits and horizons in asymptotically flat and asymptotically de Sitter backgrounds, bounds from g…
According to the no-hair theorem, astrophysical black holes are uniquely described by their mass and spin. In this paper, we review a new framework for testing the no-hair hypothesis with observations in the electromagnetic spectrum. The approach is formulated in terms of a Kerr-like spacetime containing a quadrupole moment that is independent of both mass and spin. If the no-hair theorem is correct, then any deviation from the Kerr metric quadrupole has to be zero. We show how upcoming VLBI imaging observations of Sgr A* as well as spectroscopic observations of iron lines from accreting black…
Neutron stars and black holes are the most compact astrophysical objects we can think of and as a consequence they are the main sources of gravitational waves. There are many astrophysically relevant scenarios in which these objects are immersed in or endowed with strong magnetic fields, in such a way that gravitational perturbations can couple to electromagnetic ones and can potentially trigger synergistic electromagnetic signatures. In a recent paper we derived the main equations for gravito-electromagnetic perturbations and studied in detail the case of polar electromagnetic perturbations d…
Black holes in general relativity are characterized by their trapping horizon, a one-way membrane that can be crossed only inwards. The existence of trapping horizons in astrophysical black holes can be tested observationally using a reductio ad absurdum argument, replacing black holes by horizonless configurations with a physical surface and looking for inconsistencies with electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations. In this approach, the radius of the horizonless object is always larger than but arbitrarily close to the position where the horizon of a black hole of the same mass wou…
In a static spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell spacetime the class of astrophysical solution found out by Ray and Das (2002) and Pant and Sah (1979) are revisited here in connection to the phenomenological relationship between the gravitational and electromagnetic fields. It is qualitatively shown that the charged relativistic stars of Tolman (1939) and Bayin (1978) type are of purely electromagnetic origin. The existence of this type of astrophysical solutions is a probable extension of Lorentz's conjecture that electron-like extended charged particle possesses only `electromagnetic mass'…
The measurement of an electromagnetic radiation field by a linearly accelerated observer is discussed. The nonlocality of this process is emphasized. The nonlocal theory of accelerated observers is briefly described and the consequences of this theory are illustrated using a concrete example involving the measurement of an incident pulse of radiation by an observer that experiences uniform acceleration during a limited interval of time.
We consider a spherically symmetric, Petrov-type D, spacetime with hyper-surface orthogonal, radial, homothetic Killing vector. In this work, some general properties of this spacetime for non-singular and non-degenerate data are presented. We also present the source-free electromagnetic fields in this spacetime. We then discuss general astrophysical relevance of the results obtained for this spacetime.
It is shown that a newly derived "exact expression" for radiation of an accelerated charge in the recent literature is simply incorrect, having arisen because of a wrong relativistic transformation of the distance parameter. The ensuing claim that the newly derived expression alone that satisfies the energy conservation for the electromagnetic radiation, is based on a wrong reasoning where a proper distinction between the time during which the radiation is received and the time for emission (retarded time of the charge) was not maintained.
We show, by exploring some elementary consequences of the covariance of Maxwell's equations under general coordinate transformations, that, despite inertial observers can indeed detect electromagnetic radiation emitted from a uniformly accelerated charge, comoving observers will see only a static electric field. This simple analysis can help understanding one of the most celebrated paradoxes of last century.
In the next decade, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect the coalescence of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) in the range $[10^4, 10^8] \, \rm M_{\odot}$, up to $z\sim10$. Their gravitational wave (GW) signal is expected to be accompanied by an electromagnetic counterpart (EMcp), generated by the gas accreting on the binary or on the remnant BH. In this work, we present the number and characteristics (such as redshift and mass distribution, apparent magnitudes or fluxes) of EMcps detectable jointly by LISA and some representative EM telescopes. We combine state-of-the-a…
We present an approach to the origin of inertia involving the electromagnetic component of the quantum vacuum and propose this as an alternative to Mach's principle. Preliminary analysis of the momentum flux of the classical zero-point radiation impinging on accelerated objects as viewed by an inertial observer suggests that the resistance to acceleration attributed to inertia may be at least in part a force of opposition originating in the vacuum. This analysis avoids the ad hoc modeling of particle-field interaction dynamics used previously to derive a similar result. This present approach i…
Radiative properties of gravitational and electromagnetic fields generated by uniformly accelerated charged black holes in asymptotically de Sitter spacetime are studied by analyzing the C-metric exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a positive cosmological constant. Its global structure and physical properties are thoroughly discussed. We explicitly find and describe the specific pattern of radiation which exhibits the dependence of the fields on a null direction along which the (spacelike) conformal infinity is approached. This directional characteristic of radiation suppleme…
In this paper I examine cosmological models that contain a stochastic background of nonlinear electromagnetic radiation. I show that for Born-Infeld electrodynamics the equation of state parameter, $w=P/ρ$, remains close to 1/3 throughout the evolution of the universe if $E^2=B^2$ in the late universe to a high degree of accuracy. Theories with electromagnetic Lagrangians of the form $L=-{1/4}F^2+αF^4$ have recently been studied in magnetic universes, where the electric field vanishes. It was shown that the $F^4$ term can produce a bounce in the early universe, avoiding an initial singularity.…
The first inspiral of two neutron stars observed in gravitational waves was remarkably close, allowing the kind of simultaneous gravitational wave and electromagnetic observation that had not been expected for several years. Their merger, followed by a gamma-ray burst and a kilonova, was observed across the spectral bands of electromagnetic telescopes. These GW and electromagnetic observations have led to dramatic advances in understanding short gamma-ray bursts; determining the origin of the heaviest elements; and determining the maximum mass of neutron stars. From the imprint of tides on the…
It has been suggested that single and double jets observed emanating from certain astrophysical objects may have a purely gravitational origin. We discuss new classes of pulsed gravitational wave solutions to the equation for perturbations of Ricci-flat spacetimes around Minkowski metrics, as models for the genesis of such phenomena. We discuss how these solutions are motivated by the analytic structure of spatially compact finite energy pulse solutions of the source-free Maxwell equations generated from complex chiral eigenmodes of a chirality operator. Complex gravitational pulse solutions t…
The nonlinear interaction, due to quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects, between an electromagnetic pulse and a radiation background is investigated, by combining the methods of radiation hydrodynamics with the QED theory for photon-photon scattering. For the case of a single coherent electromagnetic pulse we obtain a Zakharov-like system, where the radiation pressure of the pulse acts as a driver of acoustic waves in the photon gas. For a sufficiently intense pulse and/or background energy density there is focusing and subsequent collapse of the pulse. The relevance of our results for variou…
