We investigate the conjectured infinite-dimensional hidden symmetries of six-dimensional chiral supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets and two tensor multiplets, which is known to possess the $F_{4,4}$ symmetry upon dimensional reduction to three spacetime dimensions. Two things are done. (i) First, we analyze the geodesic equations on the coset space $F_{4,4}^{++}/K(F_{4,4}^{++})$ using the level decomposition associated with the subalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(5)\oplus \mathfrak{sl}(2)$ of $F_{4,4}^{++}$ and show their equivalence with the bosonic equations of motion of six-dimensional chiral supergravity up to the level where the dual graviton appears. In particular, the self-duality condition on the chiral $2$-form is automatically implemented in the sense that no dual potential appears for that $2$-form, in contradistinction with what occurs for the non chiral $p$-forms. (ii) Second, we describe the $p$-form hierarchy of the model in terms of its $V$-duality Borcherds superalgebra, of which we compute the Cartan matrix.
We study the Borcherds superalgebra obtained by adding an odd (fermionic) null root to the set of simple roots of a simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra. We compare it to the Kac-Moody algebra obtained by replacing the odd null root by an ordinary simple root, and then adding more simple roots, such that each node that we add to the Dynkin diagram is connected to the previous one with a single line. This generalizes the situation in maximal supergravity, where the E(n) symmetry algebra can be extended to either a Borcherds superalgebra or to the Kac-Moody algebra E(11), and both extensions ca…
We consider compactifications of heterotic string theory to four dimensions on CHL orbifolds of the type T^6 /Z_N with 16 supersymmetries. The exact partition functions of the quarter-BPS dyons in these models are given in terms of genus-two Siegel modular forms. Only the N=1,2,3 models satisfy a certain finiteness condition, and in these cases one can identify a Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebra underlying the symmetry structure of the dyon spectrum. We identify the real roots, and find that the corresponding Cartan matrices exhaust a known classification. We show that the Siegel modular form …
We introduce a quantum model for the Universe at its early stages, formulating a mechanism for the expansion of space and matter from a quantum initial condition, with particle interactions and creation driven by algebraic extensions of the Kac-Moody Lie algebra $\mathbf{e_9}$. We investigate Kac-Moody and Borcherds algebras, and we propose a generalization that meets further requirements that we regard as fundamental in quantum gravity.
It is shown, using the Wakimoto representation, that the level zero SU(2) Kac-Moody conformal field theory is topological and can be obtained by twisting an N=2 superconformal theory. Expressions for the associated N=2 superconformal generators are written down and the Kac-Moody generators are shown to be BRST exact.
Starting from noncommutative Fermi theory in two-dimensions, we construct a deformed Kac-Moody algebra between its vector and Chiral currents . The higher-order corrections to the deformed Kac-Moody algebra are explicitly calculated. We observe that the ordinary Schwinger terms are not affected by noncommutativity. Finally we conclude that the deformed Kac-Moody algebra can be given in term of ordinary Kac-Moody algebra plus infinitely many Lie algebraic structures at each non-zero power of the antisymmetric coefficient $θ$.
Borcherds algebras represent a new class of Lie algebras which have almost all the properties that ordinary Kac-Moody algebras have, and the only major difference is that these generalized Kac-Moody algebras are allowed to have imaginary simple roots. The simplest nontrivial examples one can think of are those where one adds ``by hand'' one imaginary simple root to an ordinary Kac-Moody algebra. We study the fundamental representation of this class of examples and prove that an irreducible module is given by the full tensor algebra over some integrable highest weight module of the underlying K…
The quantum Hamiltonian reduction on the OSp(1,2) super Kac-Moody algebra is described in the BRST formalism. Using a free field representation of the KM currents, the super Kac-Moody algebra is shown to be reduced to a superconformal one via the Hamiltonian reduction. This reduction is manifestly supersymmetric because of supersymmetric constraints imposed on the algebra.
It is shown that the two-loop Kac-Moody algebra is equivalent to a two variable loop algebra and a decoupled $β$-$γ$ system. Similarly WZNW and CSW models having as algebraic structure the Kac-Moody algebra are equivalent to an infinity of versions of the corresponding ordinary models and decoupled abelian fields.
We construct a Borcherds Kac-Moody (BKM) superalgebra on which the Conway group Co$_0$ acts faithfully. We show that the BKM algebra is generated by the BRST-closed states in a chiral superstring theory. We use this construction to produce denominator identities for the chiral partition functions of the Conway module $V^{s\natural}$, a supersymmetric $c=12$ chiral conformal field theory whose (twisted) partition functions enjoy moonshine properties and which has automorphism group isomorphic to Co$_0$. In particular, these functions satisfy a genus zero property analogous to that of monstrous …
Lagrangians for gauge fields and matter fields can be constructed from the infinite dimensional Kac-Moody algebra and group. A continuum regularization is used to obtain such generic lagrangians, which contain new nonlinear and asymmetric interactions not present in gauge theories based on compact Lie groups. This technique is applied to deriving the Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons lagrangians for the Kac-Moody case. The extension of this method to D=4, N=(1/2,0) supersymmetric Kac-Moody gauge fields is also made.
We show that the theory of gravity constructed from the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of the Kac-Moody algebra A1+++ with its vector representation does not allow a cosmological constant. The existence of a cosmological constant in this theory is related to the breaking of the gravitational duality symmetry.
W_k structure underlying the tensverse realization of SU(2) at level k is analyzed. Extension of the equivalence existing between covariant and light-cone gauge realization of affine Kac-Moody algebra to W_k algebras is given. Higher spin generators related to parafermions are extracted from the operator product algebra of the generators and are showed to be written in terms of only one free boson compactified on a circle.
Kac-Moody groups $G$ over $\mathbb{R}$ have been conjectured to occur as symmetry groups of supergravities in dimensions less than 3, and their integer forms $G(\mathbb{Z})$ are conjecturally U-duality groups. Mathematical descriptions of $G(\mathbb{Z})$, due to Tits, are functorial and not amenable to computation or applications. We construct Kac-Moody groups over $\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{Z}$ using an analog of Chevalley's constructions in finite dimensions and Garland's constructions in the affine case. We extend a construction of Eisenstein series on finite dimensional semisimple algebraic…
We study the residual symmetry $SL(2,R)\otimes U(1)$ of the chiral gravity in the light-cone gauge. Quantum gravitational effects renormalize the Kac-Moody central charge and introduce, through the Lorentz anomaly, an arbitrary parameter. Due to the presence of this free parameter the Kac-Moody central charge has no forbidden range of values, and the strong gravity regime is open to investigations.
These lecture notes are a brief introduction to Wess-Zumino-Witten models, and their current algebras, the affine Kac-Moody algebras. After reviewing the general background, we focus on the application of representation theory to the computation of 3-point functions and fusion rules.
We consider a natural generalisation of the class of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras. We describe in detail the conditions under which these algebras are Lorentzian. We also construct their fundamental weights, and analyse whether they possess a real principal so(1,2) subalgebra. Our class of algebras include the Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras that have recently been proposed as symmetries of M-theory and the closed bosonic string.
This is an introduction to the basic ideas and to a few further selected topics in conformal quantum field theory and in the theory of Kac-Moody algebras.
We formulate the bosonic sector of IIB supergravity as a non-linear realisation. We show that this non-linear realisation contains the Borel subalgebras of SL(11) and $E_7$ and argue that it can be enlarged so as to be based on the rank eleven Kac-Moody algebra $E_{11}$
By reducing a split $G_2$ Kac-Moody algebra by a non-maximal set of first-class constraints we produce W-algebras which (i) contain fields of negative conformal spin and (ii) are not trivial extensions of canonical W-algebras.
It is shown that $SL(n,R)$ KdV hierarchy can be expressed as definite nonpolynomials in Kac Moody currents and their derivatives by the action of Borel subgroup of $SL(n,R)$ on the phase space of centrally extended $sl(n,R)$ Kac Moody currents. Construction of Lax pair is shown, confirming Drinfeld Sokolov type Hamiltonian reduction. This suggests an example of a moduli space with symplectic structure corresponding to extended conformal symmetries.
We demonstrate that the near horizon symmetries of black holes in Einstein--Yang-Mills (EYM) theory are generated by an infinite-dimensional algebra that contains, in addition to supertranslations and superrotations, a non-Abelian loop algebra. This means that the Virasoro--Kac-Moody structure of EYM in asymptotically flat spacetimes has an exact analog in the near horizon region.
We describe the general framework for constructing collective--theory Hamiltonians whose hermicity requirements imply a Kac--Moody algebra of constraints on the associated Jacobian. We give explicit examples for the algebras $sl(2)_k$ and $sl(3)_k$. The reduction to $W_n$--constraints, relevant to $n$-matrix models, is described for the Jacobians.
The integral representations of the $\hat {sl}(2,C)$ Spin 1/2 - Spin 1/2 Kac-Moody Blocks on the torus, arising from the free field representation of the $\hat {sl}(2,C)$ Kac-Moody algebra of Wakimoto and Bernard and Felder, are used to derive an infinite class of representations of the mapping class group of the two punctured torus.
We present a variant of the Theory of Lorentzian (i. e. with a hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrix) Kac-Moody algebras recently developed by V. A. Gritsenko and the author. It is closely related with and strongly uses results of R. Borcherds. This theory should generalize well-known Theories of finite Kac-Moody algebras (i. e. classical semisimple Lie algebras corresponding to positive generalized Cartan matrices) and affine Kac-Moody algebras (corresponding to semi-positive generalized Cartan matrices). Main features of the Theory of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras are: One should consider gen…
The conjugacy classes of the involutive automorphisms of the affine Kac-Moody algebras \Cli\ for $\ell\geq 2$ are determined using the matrix formulation of automorphisms of an affine Kac-Moody algebra.
Scattering amplitudes of any four-dimensional theory with nonabelian gauge group $\mathcal G$ may be recast as two-dimensional correlation functions on the asymptotic two-sphere at null infinity. The soft gluon theorem is shown, for massless theories at the semiclassical level, to be the Ward identity of a holomorphic two-dimensional $\mathcal G$-Kac-Moody symmetry acting on these correlation functions. Holomorphic Kac-Moody current insertions are positive helicity soft gluon insertions. The Kac-Moody transformations are a $CPT$ invariant subgroup of gauge transformations which act nontriviall…
We study aspects of the theory of generalized Kac-Moody Lie algebras (or Borcherds algebras) and their standard modules. It is shown how such an algebra with no mutually orthogonal imaginary simple roots, including Borcherds' Monster Lie algebra $\frak m$, can be naturally constructed from a certain Kac-Moody subalgebra and a module for it. We observe that certain generalized Verma (induced) modules for generalized Kac-Moody algebras are standard modules and hence irreducible. In particular, starting from the moonshine module for the Monster group $M$, we construct a certain $\{frak gl}_2$- an…
This is the text of the Hermann Weyl Prize lecture given by the author at the XXIV Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics, Paris, July 2002 (to appear in the Proceedings of the Colloquium).
A new version of quantum Miura transformation on the lattice is proposed, based on the lattice Kac-Moody algebra. A possibility of existence of the Sugawara construction on the lattice is discussed.
Using the coset construction, we compute the root multiplicities at level three for some hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras including the basic hyperbolic extension of $A_1^{(1)}$ and $E_{10}$.
Given a critical quantum spin chain with a microscopic Lie-group symmetry, corresponding e.g. to $U(1)$ or $SU(2)$ spin isotropy, we numerically investigate the emergence of Kac-Moody symmetry at low energies and long distances. In that regime, one such critical quantum spin chain is described by a conformal field theory where the usual Virasoro algebra associated to conformal invariance is augmented with a Kac-Moody algebra associated to conserved currents. Specifically, we first propose a method to construct lattice operators corresponding to the Kac-Moody generators. We then numerically sho…
We investigate a class of Kac-Moody algebras previously not considered. We refer to them as n-extended Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras defined by their Dynkin diagrams through the connection of an $A_n$ Dynkin diagram to the node corresponding to the affine root. The cases $n=1$ and $n=2$ correspond to the well studied over and very extended Kac-Moody algebras, respectively, of which the particular examples of $E_{10}$ and $E_{11}$ play a prominent role in string and M-theory. We construct closed generic expressions for their associated roots, fundamental weights and Weyl vectors. We use these q…
We define Eisenstein series on rank 2 hyperbolic Kac--Moody groups over R, induced from quasi--characters. We prove convergence of the constant term and hence the almost everywhere convergence of the Eisenstein series. We define and calculate the degenerate Fourier coefficients. We also consider Eisenstein series induced from cusp forms and show that these are entire functions.
The fake monster Lie algebra is determined by the Borcherds function Phi_{12} which is the reflective modular form of the minimal possible weight with respect to O(II_{2,26}). We prove that the first non-zero Fourier-Jacobi coefficient of Phi_{12} in any of 23 Niemeier cusps is equal to the Weyl-Kac denominator function of the affine Lie algebra of the root system of the corresponding Niemeier lattice. This is an automorphic answer (in the case of the fake monster Lie algebra) on the old question of I. Frenkel and A. Feingold (1983) about possible relations between hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra…
We consider the variant of Mirror Symmetry Conjecture for K3 surfaces which relates "geometry" of curves of a general member of a family of K3 with "algebraic functions" on the moduli of the mirror family. Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras are involved in this construction. We give several examples when this conjecture is valid.
We introduce a higher dimensional generalization of the affine Kac-Moody algebra using the language of factorization algebras. In particular, on any complex manifold there is a factorization algebra of "currents" associated to any Lie algebra. We classify local cocycles of these current algebras, and compare them to central extensions of higher affine algebras recently proposed by Faonte-Hennion-Kapranov. A central goal of this paper is to witness higher Kac-Moody algebras as symmetries of a class of holomorphic quantum field theories. In particular, we prove a generalization of the free field…
