We report on the physical properties of single crystalline EuRhSi$_3$ and polycrystalline EuIrSi$_3$, inferred from magnetisation, electrical transport, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. These previously known compounds crystallise in the tetragonal BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. The single crystal magnetisation in EuRhSi$_3$ has a strongly anisotropic behaviour at 2 K with a spin-flop field of 13 T, and we present a model of these magnetic properties which allows the exchange constants to be determined. In both compounds, specific heat shows the presence of a cascade of two close transitions near 50 K, and the $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectra demonstrate that the intermediate phase has an incommensurate amplitude modulated structure. We find anomalously large values, with respect to other members of the series, for the RKKY Néel temperature, for the spin-flop field (13 T), for the spin-wave gap ($\simeq$ 20-25 K) inferred from both resistivity and specific heat data, for the spin-disorder resistivity in EuRhSi$_3$ ($\simeq 35$ $μ$Ohm.cm) and for the saturated hyperfine field (52 T). We show that all these quantities depend on the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, implying that the latter must be strongly enhanced in these two materials. EuIrSi$_3$ exhibits a giant magnetoresistance ratio, with values exceeding 600 % at 2 K in a field of 14 T.
The compound, Nd7Rh3, crystallizing in Th7Fe3-type hexagonal structure, was previously known to exhibit two magnetic transitions, one at 32 K and the other at 10 K (in zero magnetic field). Here, we report the existence of a field-induced first-order antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at 1.8 K in this compound. On the basis of the measurements of isothermal magnetization and magnetoresistance, we provide evidence for the occurence of kinetic-hindrance, proposed in the literature, resulting in phase co-existence (super-cooled ferromagnetic + antifferomagnetic) and percolative electri…
The evolution of the thermopower EuCu{2}(Ge{1-x}Si{x}){2} intermetallics, which is induced by the Si-Ge substitution, is explained by the Kondo scattering of conduction electrons on the Eu ions which fluctuate between the magnetic 2+ and non-magnetic 3+ Hund's rule configurations. The Si-Ge substitution is equivalent to chemical pressure which modifies the coupling and the relative occupation of the {\it f} and conduction states.
The understanding of magnetic and electronic properties of rare-earth intermetallics is summarized. The properties of NdNi5 or ErNi5 are understood by considering a few electronic subsystems like the f electronic subsystem and the conduction-electron subsystem. The localized f electrons can give a substantial contribution to the low temperature specific heat with the entropy of R ln2 in case of Kramers ions. In this view the heavy-fermion behaviour is related with the removal of the Kramers degeneracy of the ground state of the f electronic subsystem.
A detailed microscopic and quantitative description of the electronic and magnetic properties of Gd$^{3+}$-doped YCo$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ single crystals (Y$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$Co$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$: (0.002 $\lesssim x \leq $ 1.00) is reported through a combination of temperature-dependent electron spin resonance (ESR), heat capacity and $dc$ magnetic susceptibility experiments, plus first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The ESR results indicate that this system features an \emph{exchange bottleneck} scenario wherein various channels for the spin-lattice relaxation mechanism of the G…
We report the synthesis of EuPtIn$_{4}$ single crystalline platelets by the In-flux technique. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm structure with lattice parameters $a=4.542(1)$ Å, $b=16.955(2)$ Å$\,$ and $c=7.389(1)$ Å. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and electron spin resonance (ESR) reveal that EuPtIn$_{4}$ is a metallic Curie-Weiss paramagnet at high temperatures and presents antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below $T_{N}=13.3$ K. In addition, we observe a successive anomaly at $T^{*} = 12.6$ K and a spin-flop transition at $H_…
The Mössbauer Effect(ME) is frequently used to investigate magnetically ordered systems. One usually assumes that the magnetic order induces a hyperfine magnetic field, $B_{hyperfine}$, at the ME active site. This is the case in the ruthenates, where the temperature dependence of $B_{hyperfine}$ at $^{99}$Ru sites tracks the temperature dependence of the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic order. However this does not happen in the rare-earth intermetallics, GdRu$_2$ and HoRu$_2$. Specific heat, magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, Mössbauer effect, and neutron diffraction have been used to …
The intermetallic compound Fe2VAl looks non-metallic in transport and strongly metallic in thermodynamic and photoemission data. It has in its band structure a highly differentiated set of valence and conduction bands leading to a semimetallic system with a very low density of carriers. The pseudogap itself is due to interaction of Al states with the d orbitals of Fe and V, but the resulting carriers have little Al character. The effects of generalized gradient corrections to the local density band structure as well spin-orbit coupling are shown to be significant, reducing the carrier density …
In the series R2PdSi3, Nd2PdSi3 is an anomalous compound in the sense that it exhibits ferromagnetic order unlike other members in this family. The magnetic ordering temperature is also unusually high compared to the expected value for a Nd-based system, assuming 4f localization. Here, we have studied the electronic structure of single crystalline Nd2PdSi3 employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio band structure calculations. Theoretical results obtained for the effective electron correlation strength of 6 eV corroborate well with the experimental valence band spectra.…
We report complex magnetic, magnetoresistance (MR) and magnetocaloric properties of Gd4RhAl and Tb4RhAl forming in the Gd4RhIn type cubic structure. Though the synthesis of the compounds was reported long ago, to our knowledge, no attempt was made to investigate the properties of these compounds. The present results of ac and dc magnetization, electrical resistivity and heat-capacity measurements down to 1.8 K establish that these compounds undergo antiferromagnetic order initially, followed by complex spin-glass features with decreasing temperature. These characteristic temperatures are: For …
Kondo coupling of f and conduction electrons is a common feature of f-electron intermetallics. Similar effects should occur in carbon ring systems(metallocenes). Evidence for Kondo coupling in Ce(C8H8)2 (cerocene) and the ytterbocene Cp*2Yb(bipy) is reported from magnetic susceptibility and L_III-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy. These well-defined systems provide a new way to study the Kondo effect on the nanoscale, should generate insight into the Anderson Lattice problem, and indicate the importance of this often-ignored contribution to bonding in organometallics.

In this work we report the physical properties of the new intermetallic compound TbRhIn5 investigated by means of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat-capacity and resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction experiments. TbRhIn5 is an intermetallic compound that orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 45.5 K, the highest ordering temperature among the existing RRhIn5 (1-1-5, R = rare earth) materials. This result is in contrast to what is expected from a de Gennes scaling along the RRhIn5 series. The X-ray resonant diffraction data below TN reveal a commensurate ant…
The thermal transport measurements have been made on the Fe-based superconductor Lu2Fe3Si5 (Tc ~ 6 K) down to a very low temperature Tc/120. The field and temperature dependences of the thermal conductivity confirm the multigap superconductivity with fully opened gaps on the whole Fermi surfaces. In comparison to MgB2 as a typical example of the multigap superconductor in a p-electron system, Lu2Fe3Si5 reveals a remarkably enhanced quasiparticle heat conduction in the mixed state. The results can be interpreted as a consequence of the electronic correlations derived from Fe 3d-electrons.
A spin-1/2 magnetic impurity coupled to a one-dimensional correlated electron system have been studied by applying the density renormalization group method. The Kondo temperature is substantially enhanced by strong repulsive interactions in the chain, but changes non-monotonically in the case of electron attraction. The magnetization of the impurity at zero- temperature shows local Fermi liquid behavior.
Crystal-field (CF) effects on the rare-earth (RE) ions in ferrimagnetic intermetallics NdCo$_5$ and TbCo$_5$ are evaluated using an ab initio density functional + dynamical mean-field theory approach in conjunction with a quasi-atomic approximation for on-site electronic correlations on the localized 4$f$ shell. The study reveals an important role of the high-order sectoral harmonic component of the CF in the magnetism of RECo$_5$ intermetallics. An unexpectedly large value is computed in the both systems for the corresponding crystal-field parameter (CFP) $A_6^6 \langle r^6 \rangle$, far beyo…
Identifying the nature of magnetism, itinerant or localized, remains a major challenge in condensed-matter science. Purely localized moments appear only in magnetic insulators, whereas itinerant moments more or less co-exist with localized moments in metallic compounds such as the doped-cuprate or the iron-based superconductors, hampering a thorough understanding of the role of magnetism in phenomena like superconductivity or magnetoresistance. Here we distinguish two antiferromagnetic modulations with respective propagation wave vectors of $Q_{\pm}$ = ($H \pm 0.557(1)$, 0, $L \pm 0.150(1)$) a…
The present work aims to address the electronic and magnetic properties of the intermetallic compound GdPd$_2$Bi through a comprehensive study of the structural, magnetic, electrical and thermal transport on a polycrystalline sample, followed by theoretical calculations. Our findings indicate that the magnetic ground state is antiferromagnetic in nature. Magnetotransport data present prominent hysteresis loop hinting a structural transition with further support from specific heat and thermopower measurements, but no such signature is observed in the magnetization study. Temperature dependent p…
The intermetallic compound Nd$_2$Co$_{0.85}$Si$_{2.88}$ having a triangular lattice could be synthesized in single-phase only with defect crystal structure. Investigation through different experimental techniques indicate the presence of two magnetic transitions in the system. As verified experimentally and theoretically, the high-temperature transition T$_H$ ~ 140 K is associated with the development of ferromagnetic interaction between itinerant Co moments, whereas the low-temperature transition at T$_L$ ~ 6.5 K is due to the coupling among Nd-4f and Co-3d moments, which is antiferromagnetic…
Highly energetic magnetic fluctuations, discovered in high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), are now widely believed to be vital for the superconductivity. In two competing scenarios, they either originate from local atomic spins, or are a property of cooperative spin-density-wave (SDW) behavior of conduction electrons. Both assume clear partition into localized electrons, giving rise to local spins, and itinerant ones, occupying well-defined, rigid conduction bands. Here, by performing an INS study of spin dynamics in iron telluride, a parent material o…
The layered honeycomb lattice iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is the closest realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, primarily due to the enhanced interlayer separation and nearly ideal honeycomb lattice. We report pressure-induced structural evolution of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) up to $\sim$17 GPa and Raman scattering measurements up to $\sim$25 GPa. A structural phase transition (monoclinic $C2/c \: \rightarrow$ triclinic $P\bar{1}$) is observed with a broad mixed phase pressure range ($\sim$4 to 15 GPa). The triclinic phase consists of heavily distorted honeycomb lattic…
An impurity four-level Kondo model, in which an ion is tunneling among 4-stable points and interacting with surrounding conduction electrons, is investigated using both perturbative and numerical renormalization group methods. The results of numerical renormalization group studies show that it is possible to construct the ground state wavefunction including the excited ion states if we take into account the interaction between the conduction electrons and the ion. The resultant effective mass of quasiparticles is moderately enhanced. This result offers a good explanation for the enhanced and m…
We study how the Kondo effect is affected by the Coulomb interaction between conduction electrons on the basis of a simplified model. The single impurity Anderson model is extended to include the Coulomb interaction on the nearest-neighbour ligand orbital. The excitation spectra are calculated using the numerical renormalization group method. The effective bandwidth on the ligand orbital, $D^{eff}$, is defined to classify the state. This quantity decreases as the Coulomb interaction increases. In the $D^{eff} > Δ$ region, the low energy properties are described by the Kondo state, where $Δ$ is…
Assuming a Fermi liquid behavior for $s$-conduction electrons, we rewrite the extended Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation renormalized by interactions through the Landau parameters $F^{a}_{l}$ ($l=0,1,2 \cdots$) in an explicit form to describe the dynamic of a domain wall (DW) due to spin transfer torque phenomenon. The interaction between spins of the \textit{s}-conduction electrons explains qualitatively the DW velocity experimental observations in $\mathrm{Ni_{81}}\mathrm{Fe_{19}}$ (Permalloy) recalculated by us without defects or impurity hypothesis. Close to Stoner ferromagnetic insta…
The magnetic properties of a system of coexisting localized spins and conduction electrons are investigated within an extended version of the one dimensional Kondo lattice model in which effects stemming from the electron-lattice and on-site Coulomb interactions are explicitly included. After bosonizing the conduction electrons, is it observed that intrinsic inhomogeneities with the statistical scaling properties of a Griffiths phase appear, and determine the spin structure of the localized impurities. The appearance of the inhomogeneities is enhanced by appropriate phonons and acts destructiv…

We develop a generic theory for the resonant inelastic light (Raman) scattering by a conduction band quantum plasma taking into account the presence of the filled valence band in doped semiconductor nanostructures within a generalized resonant random phase approximation (RPA). Our generalized RPA theory explicitly incorporates the two-step resonance process where an electron from the filled valence band is first excited by the incident photon into the conduction band before an electron from the conduction band falls back into the valence band emitting the scattered photon. We show that when th…
Motivated by the presence of an extremely small electron pocket in the electronic band structure of infinite-layer (IL) nickelate superconductors, we systematically explore the superconducting (SC) properties of a two-dimensional Hubbard model influenced by an additional conduction band with small occupancy (dry Fermi sea). Our dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations demonstrated the unusual impact of this additional dry metallic layer, which shifts the SC dome of the correlated Hubbard layer towards the overdoped regime, namely the $d$-wave SC can be enhanced (suppressed) in the over…
Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group method is used to study the paramagnetic ground state of the periodic Anderson model within the dynamical mean-field approach. For the particle-hole symmetric model, which is a Kondo insulator, we find that the lattice Kondo scale T_0 is strongly enhanced over the impurity scale T_K; T_0/T_K ~ exp(1/3I), where I is the Schrieffer-Wolff exchange coupling. In the metallic regime, where the conduction band filling is reduced from one, we find characteristic signatures of Nozières exhaustion scenario, including a strongly reduced lattice Kondo scale, a sign…
In search of the origin of superconductivity in diluted rhenium superconductors and their significantly enhanced $T_c$ compared to pure Be (0.026 K), we investigated the intermetallic ReBe$_{22}$ compound, mostly by means of muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR). At a macroscopic level, its bulk superconductivity (with $T_c=9.4$ K) was studied via electrical resistivity, magnetization, and heat-capacity measurements. The superfluid density, as determined from transverse-field $μ$SR and electronic specific-heat measurements, suggest that ReBe$_{22}$ is a fully-gapped superconductor with some mu…
The localized f-electrons enrich the magnetic properties in rare-earth-based intermetallics. Among those, compounds with heavier 4d and 5d transition metals are even more fascinating because anomalous electronic properties may be induced by the hybridization of 4f and itinerant conduction electrons primarily from the d orbitals. Here, we describe the observation of trivalent Yb3+ with S = 1/2 at low temperatures in YbxPt5P, the first of a new family of materials. YbxPt5P (0.20< x <1) phases were synthesized and structurally characterized. They exhibit a large homogeneity width with the Yb rati…
