Texture plays an important role in computer vision. It is one of the most important visual attributes used in image analysis, once it provides information about pixel organization at different regions of the image. This paper presents a novel approach for texture characterization, based on complexity analysis. The proposed approach expands the idea of the Mass-radius fractal dimension, a method originally developed for shape analysis, to a set of coordinates in 3D-space that represents the texture under analysis in a signature able to characterize efficiently different texture classes in terms of complexity. An experiment using images from the Brodatz album illustrates the method performance.
This work presents a novel descriptor for texture images based on fractal geometry and its application to image analysis. The descriptors are provided by estimating the triangular prism fractal dimension under different scales with a weight exponential parameter, followed by dimensionality reduction using Karhunen-Loève transform. The efficiency of the proposed descriptors is tested on two well-known texture data sets, that is, Brodatz and Vistex, both for classification and image retrieval. The novel method is also tested concerning invariances in situations when the textures are rotated or a…
This work proposes the combination of multiscale transform with fractal descriptors employed in the classification of gray-level texture images. We apply the space-scale transform (derivative + Gaussian filter) over the Bouligand-Minkowski fractal descriptors, followed by a threshold over the filter response, aiming at attenuating noise effects caused by the final part of this response. The method is tested in the classification of a well-known data set (Brodatz) and compared with other classical texture descriptor techniques. The results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed approach, ach…

In this work, we propose a novel technique for obtaining descriptors of gray-level texture images. The descriptors are provided by applying a multiscale transform to the fractal dimension of the image estimated through the probability (Voss) method. The effectiveness of the descriptors is verified in a classification task using benchmark over texture datasets. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method as a tool for the description and discrimination of texture images.

Here we propose a new method for the classification of texture images combining fractal measures (fractal dimension, multifractal spectrum and lacunarity) with local binary patterns. More specifically we compute the box counting dimension of the local binary codes thresholded at different levels to compose the feature vector. The proposal is assessed in the classification of three benchmark databases: KTHTIPS-2b, UMD and UIUC as well as in a real-world problem, namely the identification of Brazilian plant species (database 1200Tex) using scanned images of their leaves. The proposed method demo…
Texture analysis and classification remain as one of the biggest challenges for the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. On this matter, Gabor wavelets has proven to be a useful technique to characterize distinctive texture patterns. However, most of the approaches used to extract descriptors of the Gabor magnitude space usually fail in representing adequately the richness of detail present into a unique feature vector. In this paper, we propose a new method to enhance the Gabor wavelets process extracting a fractal signature of the magnitude spaces. Each signature is reduced usin…

This work proposes a texture descriptor based on fractal theory. The method is based on the Bouligand-Minkowski descriptors. We decompose the original image recursively into 4 equal parts. In each recursion step, we estimate the average and the deviation of the Bouligand-Minkowski descriptors computed over each part. Thus, we extract entropy features from both average and deviation. The proposed descriptors are provided by the concatenation of such measures. The method is tested in a classification experiment under well known datasets, that is, Brodatz and Vistex. The results demonstrate that …

A gray-level image texture descriptors based on fractal dimension estimation is proposed in this work. The proposed method estimates the fractal dimension using probability (Voss) method. The descriptors are computed applying a multiscale transform to the fractal dimension curves of the texture image. The proposed texture descriptor method is evaluated in a classification task of well known benchmark texture datasets. The results show the great performance of the proposed method as a tool for texture images analysis and characterization.
With the heterogeneous nature of tissue texture, using a single resolution approach for optimum classification might not suffice. In contrast, a multiresolution wavelet packet analysis can decompose the input signal into a set of frequency subbands giving the opportunity to characterise the texture at the appropriate frequency channel. An adaptive best bases algorithm for optimal bases selection for meningioma histopathological images is proposed, via applying the fractal dimension (FD) as the bases selection criterion in a tree-structured manner. Thereby, the most significant subband that bet…

This work proposes the development and study of a novel technique for the generation of fractal descriptors used in texture analysis. The novel descriptors are obtained from a multiscale transform applied to the Fourier technique of fractal dimension calculus. The power spectrum of the Fourier transform of the image is plotted against the frequency in a log- log scale and a multiscale transform is applied to this curve. The obtained values are taken as the fractal descriptors of the image. The validation of the propose is performed by the use of the descriptors for the classification of a data…

Fractal analysis has been widely used in computer vision, especially in texture image processing and texture analysis. The key concept of fractal-based image model is the fractal dimension, which is invariant to bi-Lipschitz transformation of image, and thus capable of representing intrinsic structural information of image robustly. However, the invariance of fractal dimension generally does not hold after filtering, which limits the application of fractal-based image model. In this paper, we propose a novel fractal dimension invariant filtering (FDIF) method, extending the invariance of fract…

Texture is an important visual attribute used to describe images. There are many methods available for texture analysis. However, they do not capture the details richness of the image surface. In this paper, we propose a new method to describe textures using the artificial crawler model. This model assumes that each agent can interact with the environment and each other. Since this swarm system alone does not achieve a good discrimination, we developed a new method to increase the discriminatory power of artificial crawlers, together with the fractal dimension theory. Here, we estimated the fr…
Tissue texture is known to exhibit a heterogeneous or non-stationary nature, therefore using a single resolution approach for optimum classification might not suffice. A clinical decision support system that exploits the subband textural fractal characteristics for best bases selection of meningioma brain histopathological image classification is proposed. Each subband is analysed using its fractal dimension instead of energy, which has the advantage of being less sensitive to image intensity and abrupt changes in tissue texture. The most significant subband that best identifies texture discon…

In this paper we propose a novel texture descriptor called Fractal Weighted Local Binary Pattern (FWLBP). The fractal dimension (FD) measure is relatively invariant to scale-changes, and presents a good correlation with human viewpoint of surface roughness. We have utilized this property to construct a scale-invariant descriptor. Here, the input image is sampled using an augmented form of the local binary pattern (LBP) over three different radii, and then used an indexing operation to assign FD weights to the collected samples. The final histogram of the descriptor has its features calculated …
The present work proposes the development of a novel method to provide descriptors for colored texture images. The method consists in two steps. In the first, we apply a linear transform in the color space of the image aiming at highlighting spatial structuring relations among the color of pixels. In a second moment, we apply a multiscale approach to the calculus of fractal dimension based on Fourier transform. From this multiscale operation, we extract the descriptors used to discriminate the texture represented in digital images. The accuracy of the method is verified in the classification o…

Texture is one of the most obvious characteristics in solar images and it is normally described by texture features. Because textures from solar images of the same wavelength are similar, we assume texture features of solar images are multi-fractals. Based on this assumption, we propose a pure data-based image restoration method: with several high resolution solar images as references, we use the Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Network to restore burred images of the same steady physical process, in the same wavelength obtained by the same telescope. We test our method with simulated and real obs…

This paper deals with area-based subpixel image registration under rotation-isometric scaling-translation transformation hypothesis. Our approach is based on a parametrical modeling of geometrically transformed textural image fragments and maximum likelihood estimation of transformation vector between them. Due to the parametrical approach based on the fractional Brownian motion modeling of the local fragments texture, the proposed estimator MLfBm (ML stands for "Maximum Likelihood" and fBm for "Fractal Brownian motion") has the ability to better adapt to real image texture content compared to…

Next-generation ground-based solar observations require good image quality metrics for post-facto processing techniques. Based on the assumption that texture features in solar images are multi-fractal which can be extracted by a trained deep neural network as feature maps, a new reduced-reference objective image quality metric, the perception evaluation is proposed. The perception evaluation is defined as cosine distance of Gram matrix between feature maps extracted from high resolution reference image and that from blurred images. We evaluate performance of the perception evaluation with simu…

Intensity variations in image texture can provide powerful quantitative information about physical properties of biological tissue. However, tissue patterns can vary according to the utilized imaging system and are intrinsically correlated to the scale of analysis. In the case of ultrasound, the Nakagami distribution is a general model of the ultrasonic backscattering envelope under various scattering conditions and densities where it can be employed for characterizing image texture, but the subtle intra-heterogeneities within a given mass are difficult to capture via this model as it works at…
Despite the recent success of convolutional neural networks in texture recognition, model-based descriptors are still competitive, especially when we do not have access to large amounts of annotated data for training and the interpretation of the model is an important issue. Among the model-based approaches, fractal geometry has been one of the most popular, especially in biological applications. Nevertheless, fractals are part of a much broader family of models, which are the non-linear operators, studied in chaos theory. In this context, we propose here a chaos-based local descriptor for tex…

Fractal analysis has been shown to be useful in image processing for characterizing shape and gray-scale complexity. The fractal feature is a compact descriptor used to give a numerical measure of the degree of irregularity of the medical images. This descriptor property does not give ownership of the local image structure. In this paper, we present a combination of this parameter based on Box Counting with GLCM Features. This powerful combination has proved good results especially in classification of medical texture from MRI and CT Scan images of trabecular bone. This method has the potentia…

We study the applicability of a set of texture descriptors introduced in recent work by the author to texture-based segmentation of images. The texture descriptors under investigation result from applying graph indices from quantitative graph theory to graphs encoding the local structure of images. The underlying graphs arise from the computation of morphological amoebas as structuring elements for adaptive morphology, either as weighted or unweighted Dijkstra search trees or as edge-weighted pixel graphs within structuring elements. In the present paper we focus on texture descriptors in whic…
Self-similarity is the essence of fractal images and, as such, characterizes natural stochastic textures. This paper is concerned with the property of self-similarity in the statistical sense in the case of fully-textured images that contain both stochastic texture and structural (mostly deterministic) information. We firstly decompose a textured image into two layers corresponding to its texture and structure, and show that the layer representing the stochastic texture is characterized by random phase of uniform distribution, unlike the phase of the structured information which is coherent. T…

This work proposes to obtain novel fractal descriptors from gray-level texture images by combining information from interior and boundary measures of the Minkowski dilation applied to the texture surface. At first, the image is converted into a surface where the height of each point is the gray intensity of the respective pixel in that position in the image. Thus, this surface is morphologically dilated by spheres. The radius of such spheres is ranged within an interval and the volume and the external area of the dilated structure are computed for each radius. The final descriptors are given b…
One of the most important tasks in image processing problem and machine vision is object recognition, and the success of many proposed methods relies on a suitable choice of algorithm for the segmentation of an image. This paper focuses on how to apply texture operators based on the concept of fractal dimension and cooccurence matrix, to the problem of object recognition and a new method based on fractal dimension is introduced. Several images, in which the result of the segmentation can be shown, are used to illustrate the use of each method and a comparative study of each operator is made.

Assessing tumor tissue heterogeneity via ultrasound has recently been suggested for predicting early response to treatment. The ultrasound backscattering characteristics can assist in better understanding the tumor texture by highlighting local concentration and spatial arrangement of tissue scatterers. However, it is challenging to quantify the various tissue heterogeneities ranging from fine-to-coarse of the echo envelope peaks in tumor texture. Local parametric fractal features extracted via maximum likelihood estimation from five well-known statistical model families are evaluated for the …
Fractal image compression has some desirable properties like high quality at high compression ratio, fast decoding, and resolution independence. Therefore it can be used for many applications such as texture mapping and pattern recognition and image watermarking. But it suffers from long encoding time due to its need to find the best match between sub blocks. This time is related to the approach that is used. In this paper we present a fast encoding Algorithm based on no search method. Our goal is that more blocks are covered in initial step of quad tree algorithm. Experimental result has been…
Noise is one of the major problems that hinder an effective texture analysis of disease in medical images, which may cause variability in the reported diagnosis. In this paper seven texture measurement methods (two wavelet, two model and three statistical based) were applied to investigate their susceptibility to subtle noise caused by acquisition and reconstruction deficiencies in computed tomography (CT) images. Features of lung tumours were extracted from two different conventional and contrast enhanced CT image data-sets under filtered and noisy conditions. When measuring the noise in the …
In this paper, we examine several typical texture attributes developed in the image processing community in recent years with respect to their capability of characterizing a migrated seismic volume. These attributes are generated in either frequency or space domain, including steerable pyramid, curvelet, local binary pattern, and local radius index. The comparative study is performed within an image retrieval framework. We evaluate these attributes in terms of retrieval accuracy. It is our hope that this comparative study will help acquaint the seismic interpretation community with the many av…

Meningioma brain tumour discrimination is challenging as many histological patterns are mixed between the different subtypes. In clinical practice, dominant patterns are investigated for signs of specific meningioma pathology; however the simple observation could result in inter- and intra-observer variation due to the complexity of the histopathological patterns. Also employing a computerised feature extraction approach applied at a single resolution scale might not suffice in accurately delineating the mixture of histopathological patterns. In this work we propose a novel multiresolution fea…
