We present optical spectra of pre-main sequence (PMS) candidates around the H$α$ region taken with the Southern African Large Telescope, SALT, in the low metallicity ($Z$) Galactic region Sh 2-284, which includes the open cluster Dolidze 25 with an atypical low metallicity of $Z$ $\sim$ 1/5 $Z_{\odot}$. It has been suggested on the basis of both theory and observations that PMS mass-accretion rates, $\dot M_{\rm{acc}}$, are a function of $Z$. We present the first sample of spectroscopic estimates of mass-accretion rates for PMS stars in any low-$Z$ star-forming region. Our data-set was enlarged with literature data of H$α$ emission in intermediate-resolution R-band spectroscopy. Our total sample includes 24 objects spanning a mass range between 1 - 2 $M_{\odot}$ and with a median age of approximately 3.5 Myr. The vast majority (21 out of 24) show evidence for a circumstellar disk on the basis of 2MASS and Spitzer infrared photometry. We find $\dot M_{\rm{acc}}$ in the 1 - 2 $M_{\odot}$ interval to depend quasi-quadratically on stellar mass, with $\dot M_{\rm{acc}}$ $\propto$ $M_{\ast}^{2.4\,\pm\,0.35}$, and inversely with stellar age $\dot M_{\rm{acc}}$ $\propto$ $t_{\ast}^{-\,0.7\,\pm\,0.4}$. Furthermore, we compare our spectroscopic $\dot M_{\rm{acc}}$ measurements with solar $Z$ Galactic PMS stars in the same mass range, but, surprisingly find no evidence for a systematic change in $\dot M_{\rm{acc}}$ with $Z$. We show that literature accretion-rate studies are influenced by detection limits, and we suggest that $\dot M_{\rm{acc}}$ may be controlled by factors other than $Z_{\ast}$, $M_{\ast}$, and age.
We investigate the upper stellar mass limit set by radiative feedback by the forming star with various accretion rates and metallicities. To this end, we numerically solve the structures of both a protostar and its surrounding accretion envelope assuming a spherical symmetric and steady flow. The optical depth of the dust cocoon, a dusty part of the accretion envelope, differs among the direct light from the stellar photosphere and the diffuse light re-emitted as dust thermal emission. As a result, varying the metallicity qualitatively changes the way that the radiative feedback suppresses the…
The early evolution of protostellar disks with metallicities in the $Z=1.0-0.01~Z_\odot$ range was studied with a particular emphasis on the strength of gravitational instability and the nature of protostellar accretion in low-metallicity systems. Numerical hydrodynamics simulations in the thin-disk limit were employed that feature separate gas and dust temperatures, and disk mass-loading from the infalling parental cloud cores. Models with cloud cores of similar initial mass and rotation pattern, but distinct metallicity were considered to distinguish the effect of metallicity from that of in…
We calculate the evolution of cloud cores embedded in different envelopes to investigate environmental effects on the mass accretion rate onto protostars. As the initial state, we neglect the magnetic field and cloud rotation, and adopt star-forming cores composed of two parts: a centrally condensed core and an outer envelope. The inner core has a critical Bonnor-Ebert density profile and is enclosed by the outer envelope. We prepare 15 star-forming cores with different outer envelope densities and gravitational radii, within which the gas flows into the collapsing core, and calculate their ev…

The relation between the mass accretion rate onto the circumstellar disc and the rate of mass ejection by magnetically driven winds is investigated using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulations. Using a spherical cloud core with a varying ratio of thermal to gravitational energy, which determines the mass accretion rate onto the disc, to define the initial conditions, the outflow propagation for approximately 10^4 yr after protostar formation is then calculated for several cloud cores. The mass ejection rate and accretion rate are comparable only when the magnetic energy of the init…
Direct collapse black hole (DCBH) formation with mass $\gtrsim 10^{5}~M_{\odot}$ is a promising scenario for the origin of high-redshift supermassive black holes. It has usually been supposed that the DCBH can only form in the primordial gas since the metal enrichment enhances the cooling ability and causes the fragmentation into smaller pieces. What actually happens in such an environment, however, has not been explored in detail. Here, we study the impact of the metal enrichment on the clouds, conducting hydrodynamical simulations to follow the cloud evolution in cases with different degree …
We study dissipation process of magnetic fields in the metallicity range $0-1 Z_{\odot}$ for contracting prestellar cloud cores. By solving non-equilibrium chemistry for important charged species including charged grains, we evaluate the drift velocity of the magnetic-field lines with respect to the gas. We find that the magnetic flux dissipates in the density range $10^{12}{\rm cm^{-3}} \lesssim n_{\rm H} \lesssim 10^{17}{\rm cm^{-3}}$ for the solar-metallicity case at the scale of the core, which is assumed to be the Jeans scale. The dissipation density range becomes narrower for lower metal…
The main accretion phase of star formation is investigated in clouds with different metallicities in the range of 0 \le Z \le Z_\odot, resolving the protostellar radius. Starting from a near-equilibrium prestellar cloud, we calculate the cloud evolution up to \sim100 yr after the first protostar formation. The star formation process considerably differs between clouds with lower (Z \le 10^-4 Z_\odot) and higher (Z > 10^-4 Z_\odot) metallicities. Fragmentation frequently occurs and many protostars appear without forming a stable circumstellar disc in lower-metallicity clouds. In these clouds, a…
Some Jupiter-mass exoplanets contain $\sim$$100\, M_\oplus$ of metals, well above the $\sim$$10\, M_\oplus$ typically needed in a solid core to trigger giant planet formation by runaway gas accretion. We demonstrate that such `heavy-metal Jupiters' can result from planetary mergers near $\sim$10 au. Multiple cores accreting gas at runaway rates gravitationally perturb one another onto crossing orbits such that the average merger rate equals the gas accretion rate. Concurrent mergers and gas accretion implies the core mass scales with the total planet mass as $M_{\rm core} \propto M^{1/5}$ - he…
One of the fundamental properties of an intermediate polar is the dynamical nature of the accretion flow as it encounters the white dwarf's magnetosphere. Many works have presumed a dichotomy between disk-fed accretion, in which the WD accretes from a Keplerian disk, and stream-fed accretion, in which the matter stream from the donor star directly impacts the WD's magnetosphere without forming a disk. However, there is also a third, poorly understood regime in which the accretion flow consists of a torus of diamagnetic blobs that encircles the WD. This mode of accretion is expected to exist at…
