The study of algebraic properties of groups of transformations of a manifold gives rise to an interplay between different areas of mathemathics such as topology, geometry, and dynamical systems. Especially, in this paper, we point out some interplays between topology, geometry, and dynamical systems which are underlying to the group of symplectic homeomorphisms. The latter situation can occur when one thinks of the following question. Is there a flux geometry which is underlying to the group of strong symplectic homeomorphisms so that Fathi's Poincare duality theorem continues to hold? We discuss on some possible answers of the above preoccupation, and we elaborate various topological analogues of some well-known results found in the field of symplectic dynamics. We leave several open questions and conjectures.
We prove that the generalized symplectic capacities recognize objects in symplectic categories whose objects are of the form $(M, ω)$, such that $M$ is a compact and 1-connected manifold, $ω$ is an exact symplectic form on $M$, and there exists a boundary component of $M$ with negative helicity. The set of generalized symplectic capacities is thus a complete invariant for such categories. This answers a question by Cieliebak, Hofer, Latschev, and Schlenk. It appears to be the first result concerning this question, except for recognition results for manifolds of dimension 2, ellipsoids, and pol…
The aim of this paper is to explain a link between symplectic isotopies of open objects such as balls and flexibility properties of symplectic hypersurfaces. We get connectedness results for spaces of symplectic ellipsoids or maximal packings of $P^2$.
We study families of objects in Fukaya categories, specifically ones whose deformation behaviour is prescribed by the choice of an odd degree cohomology class. This leads to invariants of symplectic manifolds, which we apply to blowups along symplectic mapping tori.
In this remark we discuss a relationship between (co)homology classes of a symplectic manifold realized by symplectic and lagrangian objects. We establish some transversality condition for the classes, realized by symplectic divisors and smooth lagrangian tori with some special condition on their intersections.
We introduce the notion of a symplectic hopfoid, which is a "groupoid-like" object in the category of symplectic manifolds where morphisms are given by canonical relations. Such groupoid-like objects arise when applying a version of the cotangent functor to the structure maps of a Lie groupoid. We show that such objects are in one-to-one correspondence with symplectic double groupoids, generalizing a result of Zakrzewski concerning symplectic double groups and Hopf algebra objects in the aforementioned category. The proof relies on the fact that one can realize the core of a symplectic double …
A toric degeneration in algebraic geometry is a process where a given projective variety is being degenerated into a toric one. Then one can obtain information about the original variety via analyzing the toric one, which is a much easier object to study. Harada and Kaveh described how one incorporates a symplectic structure into this process, providing a very useful tool for solving certain problems in symplectic geometry. Below we present applications of this method to questions about the Gromov width, and cohomological rigidity problems.
We consider the deformation theory of two kinds of geometric objects: foliations on one hand, pre-symplectic forms on the other. For each of them, we prove that the geometric notion of equivalence given by isotopies agrees with the algebraic notion of gauge equivalence obtained from the $L_{\infty}$-algebras governing these deformation problems.
Generalized complex (GC) geometry interpolates between ordinary symplectic and complex geometry. Stable generalized complex manifolds (first introduced by Cavalcanti, Gualtieri in 2015) carry a Poisson structure which is generically symplectic, but degenerates on a (real) codimension-2 submanifold. Up to gauge equivalence, the stable generalized complex structure is thus determined by what is called an elliptic symplectic form, which allows the extension of a number of techniques and results from symplectic geometry to stable GC geometry. This paper introduces a new type of submanifold in stab…
Liouville domains have become central objects in symplectic and contact geometry. However, the auxiliary data they involve --- namely, Liouville forms --- and the non-compactness of their completions generate some inconvenience. The notion of ideal Liouville domains is designed to suppress these awkward aspects and to let symplectic structures play the leading role. Ideal Liouville domains are compact manifolds with boundary whose interior carries a symplectic form satisfying some tameness condition along the boundary. Their definition and their basic properties are presented in the first part…
We consider D-branes in string theory and address the issue of how to describe them mathematically as a fundamental object (as opposed to a solitonic object) of string theory in the realm in differential and symplectic geometry. The notion of continuous maps, $k$-times differentiable maps, and smooth maps from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a (commutative) real manifold $Y$ is developed. Such maps are meant to describe D-branes or matrix branes in string theory when these branes are light and soft with only small enough or even zero brane-tension. When $Y$ is a symplec…
We recall the main facts about the odd Laplacian acting on half-densities on an odd symplectic manifold and discuss a homological interpretation for it suggested recently by P. {Š}evera. We study the relationship of odd symplectic geometry with classical objects. We show that the Berezinian of a canonical transformation for an odd symplectic form is a polynomial in matrix entries and a complete square. This is a simple but fundamental fact, parallel to Liouville's theorem for an even symplectic structure. We draw attention to the fact that the de Rham complex on $M$ naturally admits an action …
Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface and $D$ an effective divisor on $X$. Let ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ denote the moduli space of $D$-twisted stable Higgs bundles (a special class of Hitchin pairs) on $X$ of rank $r$ and degree $d$. It is known that ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ has a natural holomorphic Poisson structure which is in fact symplectic if and only if $D$ is the zero divisor. We prove that ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ admits a natural enhancement to a holomorphic symplectic manifold which is called here ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$. This ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$ is constructed by trivializing, over…
We consider an oriented version of the stable symplectic category defined in \cite{N}. We show that the group of monoidal automorphisms of this category, that fix each object, contains a natural subgroup isomorphic to the solvable quotient (or a graded-abelian quotient) of the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group. This establishes a stable version of a conjecture of Kontsevich which states that groups closely related to the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group act on the moduli space of certain field theories \cite{KO}. The above quotient of the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group is also shown to be the mo…
We propose a new approach to the topological recursion of Eynard-Orantin based on the notion of Airy structure, which we introduce in the paper. We explain why Airy structure is a more fundamental object than the one of the spectral curve. We explain how the concept of quantization of Airy structure leads naturally to the formulas of topological recursion as well as their generalizations. The notion of spectral curve is also considered in a more general framework of Poisson surfaces endowed with foliation. We explain how the deformation theory of spectral curves is related to Airy structures. …
We solve the integration problem for generalized complex manifolds, obtaining as the natural integrating object a weakly holomorphic symplectic groupoid, which is a real symplectic groupoid with a compatible complex structure defined only on the associated stack, i.e., only up to Morita equivalence. We explain how such objects differentiate to give generalized complex manifolds, and we show that a generalized complex manifold is integrable in this sense if and only if its underlying real Poisson structure is integrable. Crucial to our solution are several new technical tools which are of indep…
We show that the perfect derived categories of Iyama's $d$-dimensional Auslander algebras of type $\mathbb{A}$ are equivalent to the partially wrapped Fukaya categories of the $d$-fold symmetric product of the $2$-dimensional unit disk with finitely many stops on its boundary. Furthermore, we observe that Koszul duality provides an equivalence between the partially wrapped Fukaya categories associated to the $d$-fold symmetric product of the disk and those of its $(n-d)$-fold symmetric product; this observation leads to a symplectic proof of a theorem of Beckert concerning the derived Morita e…
We prove that every spherical object in the derived Fukaya category of a closed surface of genus at least two whose Chern character represents a non-zero Hochschild homology class is quasi-isomorphic to a simple closed curve equipped with a rank one local system. (The homological hypothesis is necessary.) This largely answers a question of Haiden, Katzarkov and Kontsevich. It follows that there is a natural surjection from the autoequivalence group of the Fukaya category to the mapping class group. The proofs appeal to and illustrate numerous recent developments: quiver algebra models for wrap…
The collection of $d \times N$ complex matrices with prescribed column norms and prescribed (nonzero) singular values forms a compact algebraic variety, which we refer to as a frame space. Elements of frame spaces -- i.e., frames -- are used to give robust representations of complex-valued signals, so that geometrical and measure-theoretic properties of frame spaces are of interest to the signal processing community. This paper is concerned with the following question: what is the probability that a frame drawn uniformly at random from a given frame space has the property that any subset of $d…
A group, defined as set with associative multiplication and inverse, is a natural structure describing the symmetry of a space. The concept of group generalizes to group objects internal to other categories than sets. But there are yet more general objects that can still be thought of as groups in many ways, such as quantum groups. We explain some of the generalizations of groups which arise in Poisson geometry and quantization: the germ of a topological group, Poisson Lie groups, rigid monoidal structures on symplectic realizations, groupoids, 2-groups, stacky Lie groups, and hopfish algebras…
