Previously a new scheme of quantum information processing based on spin coherent states of two component Bose-Einstein condensates was proposed (Byrnes {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. A 85, 40306(R)). In this paper we give a more detailed exposition of the scheme, expanding on several aspects that were not discussed in full previously. The basic concept of the scheme is that spin coherent states are used instead of qubits to encode qubit information, and manipulated using collective spin operators. The scheme goes beyond the continuous variable regime such that the full space of the Bloch sphere is used. We construct a general framework for quantum algorithms to be executed using multiple spin coherent states, which are individually controlled. We illustrate the scheme by applications to quantum information protocols, and discuss possible experimental implementations. Decoherence effects are analyzed under both general conditions and for the experimental implementation proposed.
A method for performing nonlocal interferometry using phase-entangled macroscopic coherent states is described. The required entanglement can be generated using weak nonlinearities while Bell's inequality can be violated using single photons as a probe. The entanglement is relatively robust against photon loss and Bell's inequality can be violated over a relatively large distance in optical fibers despite the fact that a large number of photons are absorbed in the process.
Macro-realism is a fundamental feature of classical world that contradicts with the quantum theory. An elegant method of testing macrorealism is to apply the Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI), but the non-invasivity of measurement is challenging in practice. In this work, we report the LGI violation of path observable in a composite interference experiment with coherent light. Experiment results confirm the occurrence of destructive interference providing per se as evidence of macro-realism violation. And by using an exact weak measurement model in the present experiment, the advantage that the vi…
Entanglement between macroscopically populated states can easily be created by combining a single photon and a bright coherent state on a beam-splitter. Motivated by the simplicity of this technique, we report on a method using displacement operations in the phase space and basic photon detections to reveal such an entanglement. We demonstrate through preliminary experimental results, that this eminently feasible approach provides an attractive way for exploring entanglement at various scales, ranging from one to a thousand photons. This offers an instructive viewpoint to gain insight into the…
Franson-type nonlocal quantum correlation based on the particle nature of quantum mechanics has been intensively studied for both fundamental physics and potential applications of quantum key distribution between remotely separated parties over the last several decades. Recently, a coherence theory of deterministic quantum features has been applied for Franson-type nonlocal correlation [arXiv:2102.06463] to understand its quantumness in a purely classical manner, where the resulting features are deterministic and macroscopic. Here, nearly sub-Poisson distributed coherent photon pairs obtained …
$W$-type entangled states can be used as quantum channels for, e.g., quantum teleportation, quantum dense coding, and quantum key distribution. In this work, we propose a way to generate a macroscopic $W$-type entangled coherent state using quantum memories in circuit QED. The memories considered here are nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles (NVEs), each located in a different cavity. This proposal does not require initially preparing each NVE in a coherent state instead of a ground state, which should significantly reduce its experimental difficulty. For most of the operation time, each cavity r…
We study the dynamics of a macroscopic superconducting qubit coupled to two independent non-stationary reservoirs by using time-dependent perturbation theory. We show that an equilibrium environment surpasses the coherent evolution of the macroscopic qubit completely. When the qubit couples to two different reservoirs, exemplifying a non-equilibrium environment, the short-time dynamics is affected by the interference between two reservoirs, implying the non-additivity of effects of two reservoirs. The non-additivity can be traced back to a non-Markovian effect, even though two reservoirs are i…
We demonstrate coherent control of optomechanically induced transparency and Fano resonances in a four mirror macroscopic optomechanical cavity, with two movable mirrors, each driven by an external mechanical pump. The variable control of the amplitude and phase of the coherent mechanical pumps provides a means of tuning the shape and nature of the Fano profiles. Further, our scheme shows the occurrence of tunable optomechanical features, even at very low mechanical driving field amplitudes, in macroscopic optomechanical cavities.
A novel method of macroscopically entangled light-pair generation is presented for a quantum laser using randomness-based deterministic phase control of coherent light in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Unlike the particle nature-based quantum correlation in conventional quantum mechanics, the wave nature of photons is applied for collective phase control of coherent fields, resulting in a deterministically controllable nonclassical phenomenon. For the proof of principle, the entanglement between output light fields from an MZI is examined using the Hong-Ou-Mandel-type anticorrelation tec…
We propose a scheme to generate macroscopic superposition states in spin ensembles, where a coherent driving field is applied to accelerate the generation of macroscopic superposition states. The numerical calculation demonstrates that this approach allows us to generate a superposition of two classically distinct states of the spin ensemble with a high fidelity above 0.96 for 300 spins. For the larger spin ensemble, though the fidelity slightly decline, it maintains above 0.85 for an ensemble of 500 spins. The time to generate a macroscopic superposition state is also numerically calculated, …
The generation of entanglement between disparate physical objects is a key ingredient in the field of quantum technologies, since they can have different functionalities in a quantum network. Here we propose and analyze a generic approach to steady-state entanglement generation between two oscillators with different temperatures and decoherence properties coupled in cascade to a common unidirectional light field. The scheme is based on a combination of coherent noise cancellation and dynamical cooling techniques for two oscillators with effective masses of opposite signs, such as quasi-spin an…
We present the proposition of an experiment in which the multiphoton quantum superposition consisting of N= 10^5 particles generated by a quantum-injected optical parametric amplifier (QI-OPA), seeded by a single-photon belonging to an EPR entangled pair, is made to interact with a Mirror-BEC shaped as a Bragg interference structure. The overall process will realize a Macroscopic Quantum Superposition (MQS) involving a microscopic single-photon state of polarization entangled with the coherent macroscopic transfer of momentum to the BEC structure, acting in space-like separated distant places.
The usual formulation of Macrorealism is recast to make this notion fully concurrent with the basic ideas behind classical physics. The assumption of non-invasiveness of measurements is dropped. Instead, it is assumed that the current state of the system defines full initial conditions for its subsequent evolution. An example of a new family of temporal Bell inequalities is derived which can be applied to processes in which the state of the system undergoes arbitrarily many transformations (which was not the case in the original approach). An exponential (in terms of number of operations) viol…
With the slow but constant progress in the coherent control of quantum systems, it is now possible to create large quantum superpositions. There has therefore been an increased interest in quantifying any claims of macroscopicity. We attempt here to motivate three criteria which we believe should enter in the assessment of macroscopic quantumness: The number of quantum fluctuation photons, the purity of the states, and the ease with which the branches making up the state can be distinguished.
The polarization properties of macroscopic Bell states are characterized using three-dimensional quantum polarization tomography. This method utilizes three-dimensional inverse Radon transform to reconstruct the polarization quasiprobability distribution function of a state from the probability distributions measured for various Stokes observables. The reconstructed 3D distributions obtained for the macroscopic Bell states are compared with those obtained for a coherent state with the same mean photon number. The results demonstrate squeezing in one or more Stokes observables.
Entanglement constitutes a main feature that distinguishes quantum from classical physics and is a key resource of quantum technologies. Here we show, however, that entanglement may also serve as the essential ingredient for the emergence of classical behavior in a composite nonlinear radiating system. We consider the radiation from a macroscopic spin emitter, such as the collective radiation from an atomic ensemble. We introduce a new class of macroscopic spin states, the coherently radiating spin states (CRSS), defined as the asymptotic eigenstates of the SU(2) lowering operator. We find tha…
We introduce a quantum teleportation scheme that can transfer a macroscopic spin coherent state between two locations. In the scheme a large number of copies of a qubit, such as realized in a coherent two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, is teleported onto a distant macroscopic spin coherent state using only elementary operations and measurements. We analyze the error of the protocol with the number of particles N in the spin coherent state under decoherence and find that it scales favorably with N.
The well studied quantum optical Schrödinger cat state is a superposition of two distinguishable states, with quantum coherence between these macroscopically distinguishable states being of foundational and, in the context of quantum-information processing, practical use. We refer to these quantum-optical cat states as quantum dichotomous states, reflecting that the state is a superposition of two options, and we introduce the term quantum multichotomous state to refer to a superposition of multiple macroscopically distinguishable options. For a single degree of freedom, such as position, we c…
It has recently been conjectured that detecting quantum effects such as superposition or entanglement for macroscopic systems always requires high measurement precision. Analyzing an apparent counter-example involving macroscopic coherent states and Kerr non-linearities, we find that while measurements with coarse outcomes can be sufficient, the phase control precision of the necessary non-linear operations has to increase with the size of the system. This suggests a refined conjecture that either the {\it outcome precision} or the {\it control precision} of the measurements has to increase wi…
For systems analogous to a linear harmonic oscillator, the simplest way to characterize the state is by a covariance matrix containing the symmetrically-ordered moments of operators analogous to position and momentum. We show that using Stokes-like detectors without direct access to either position or momentum, the estimation of the covariance matrix of a macroscopic signal is still possible using interference with a classical noisy and low-intensity reference. Such a detection technique will allow to estimate macroscopic quantum states of electromagnetic radiation without a coherent high-inte…
Theory and experiment both demonstrate that an entangled quantum state of two subsystems is neither a superposition of states of its subsystems nor a superposition of composite states but rather a coherent superposition of nonlocal correlations between incoherently mixed local states of the two subsystems. Thus, even if one subsystem happens to be macroscopic as in the entangled "Schrodinger's cat" state resulting from an ideal measurement, this state is not the paradoxical macroscopic superposition it is generally presumed to be. It is, instead, a "macroscopic correlation," a coherent quantum…
The energy spectrum of Dicke Hamiltonians with and without the rotating wave approximation for arbitrary atom-number is obtained analytically with the variational method, in which the effective pseudo-spin Hamiltonian resulted from the expectation value in the boson-field coherent state is diagonalized by the spin-coherent-state transformation. In addition to the ground-state energy an excited macroscopic quantum-state is found corresponding to the south-and-north-pole gauges of the spin-coherent states respectively. Our results of ground-state energies in exact agreement with various approach…
Entangled coherent states, which can in principle be created using strong Kerr non-linearities, allow the violation of Bell inequalities for very coarse-grained measurements. This seems to contradict a recent conjecture that observing quantum effects in macroscopic systems generally requires very precise measurements. However, here we show that both the creation of the required states and the required measurements rely on being able to control the phase of the necessary Kerr-nonlinearity based unitary operations with extreme precision. This lends support to the idea that there is a general pri…
The Pancharatnam phase deficit is defined as the difference between the Pancharat- nam phase acquired by the global system and the sum of the Pancharatnam phases acquired by subsystems during local unitary evolutions. We show that a non-zero value of the Pancharatnam phase deficit for a composite quantum system can be a signature of quantum entanglement. In the context of macroscopic quantum systems, we illustrate how the Pancharatnam phase deficit can be used to detect macroscopically entangled states. In particular, we use the Pancharatnam phase deficit to detect the entanglement for macrosc…
We propose a method to generate analytical quantum Bell inequalities based on the principle of Macroscopic Locality. By imposing locality over binary processings of virtual macroscopic intensities, we establish a correspondence between Bell inequalities and quantum Bell inequalities in bipartite scenarios with dichotomic observables. We discuss how to improve the latter approximation and how to extend our ideas to scenarios with more than two outcomes per setting.
The present discussion rises a number of the questions. For example, is rotational coherence of large molecules necessarily destroyed in the conventionally statistical limit of structureless non-selective continuum (for fixed total spin and parity values) under the conditions of complete intramolecular energy redistribution and vibrational dephasing in the regime of strong ro-vibrational coupling? For the slow cross-symmetry phase relaxation, quantum coherent superpositions of a large number of complex configurations with, e.g., many different total angular momenta produce image of a rotation …
We use a single squeezed state to represent a qubit, which can be coherently processed in a deconvolution picture (DP) in the presence of noise. We avail ourselves of the fact that when evolution is governed by a quadratic dissipative equation, there exists a basis of squeezed states that evolves to another basis of such states in the DP. An operator acts as an impurity filter, restoring the coherence lost from the inexorable interactions of the qubit with its surroundings.
We show how a test of macroscopic realism based on Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGIs) can be performed in a macroscopic system. Using a continuous-variable approach, we consider quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements applied to atomic ensembles undergoing magnetically-driven coherent oscillation. We identify measurement schemes requiring only Gaussian states as inputs and giving a significant LGI violation with realistic experimental parameters and imperfections. The predicted violation is shown to be due to true quantum effects rather than to a classical invasivity of the measurement. Using …
We report coherent coupling between two macroscopically separated nitrogen-vacancy electron spin ensembles in a cavity quantum electrodynamics system. The coherent interaction between the distant ensembles is directly detected in the cavity transmission spectrum by observing bright and dark collective multiensemble states and an increase of the coupling strength to the cavity mode. Additionally, in the dispersive limit we show transverse ensemble-ensemble coupling via virtual photons.
Macroscopic realism is a classical worldview that a macroscopic system is always determinately in one of the two or more macroscopically distinguishable states available to it, and so is never in a superposition of these states. The question of whether there is a fundamental limitation on the possibility to observe quantum phenomena at the macroscopic scale remains unclear. Here we implement a strict and simple protocol to test macroscopic realism in a light-matter interfaced system. We create a micro-macro entanglement with two macroscopically distinguishable solid-state components and rule o…
In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 063902 (2021)], M. A. Carroll et al. derived a model to analytically determine regimes of thermal, collective anti-bunching, and laser emission for emitters in a cavity. According to their model, nanolasers exhibit a distinct threshold at which the coherent laser field emerges from a bifurcation at a finite pump rate. The amplitude of this coherent field increases with a further increase in the pump rate. Such a behavior contrasts the usual view of the transition to lasing in single-mode high-$β$ nanolasers, according to which strong spontaneous emissi…
Quantum entanglement is known as a unique feature of quantum mechanics, which cannot be obtained from classical physics. Recently, a coherence interpretation has been conducted for the delayed-choice quantum eraser using coherent photon pairs, where phase-locked symmetric frequency detuning between paired photons plays an essential role for selective measurement-caused nonlocal correlation. Here, a macroscopic version of the nonlocal correlation is presented using orthogonally polarized optical fields in a continuous wave quantum eraser scheme in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The result…
We compare effects of decoherence and detection inefficiency on entangled coherent states (ECSs) and entangled photon pairs (EPPs), both of which are known to be particularly useful for quantum information processing (QIP). When decoherence effects caused by photon losses are heavy, the ECSs outperform the EPPs as quantum channels for teleportation both in fidelities and in success probabilities. On the other hand, when inefficient detectors are used, the teleportation scheme using the ECSs suffers undetected errors that result in the degradation of fidelity, while this is not the case for the…
We present and analyze a proposal for a macroscopic quantum delayed-choice experiment with massive mechanical resonators. In our approach, the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy impurity is employed to control the coherent coupling between the mechanical modes of two carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that a mechanical phonon can be in a coherent superposition of wave and particle, thus exhibiting both behaviors at the same time. We also discuss the mechanical noise tolerable in our proposal and predict a critical temperature below which the morphing between wave and particle states ca…
We study interacting dipolar atomic bosons in a triple-well potential within a ring geometry. This system is shown to be equivalent to a three-site Bose-Hubbard model. We analyze the ground state of dipolar bosons by varying the effective on-site interaction. This analysis is performed both numerically and analytically by using suitable coherent-state representations of the ground state. The latter exhibits a variety of forms ranging from the su(3) coherent state in the delocalization regime to a macroscopic cat-like state with fully localized populations, passing for a coexistence regime wher…
Quantum entanglement is the quintessence of quantum information processing mostly limited to the microscopic regime governed by Heisenberg uncertainty principle. For practical applications, however, macroscopic entanglement gives great benefits in both photon loss and sensitivity. Recently, a novel method of macroscopic entanglement generation has been proposed and demonstrated in a coupled interferometric system using classical laser light, where superposition between binary bases in each interferometric system plays a key role. Here, the function of path superposition applied to independent …
