Recent results on meson spectroscopy from lattice QCD are reviewed. The emphasis is on interesting states near thresholds like $Z_c^+(3900)$, $X(3872)$ and $D_{s0}^*(2317)$. Another focus is on the meson resonances in light, strange and charm sector, where the resonance masses as well as the strong decay widths are extracted from the lattice.
We first construct the effective chiral Lagrangians for the $1^{-+}$ exotic mesons. With the infrared regularization scheme, we derive the one-loop infrared singular chiral corrections to the $π_1(1600)$ mass explicitly. We investigate the variation of the different chiral corrections with the pion mass under two schemes. Hopefully, the explicit non-analytical chiral structures will be helpful to the chiral extrapolation of the lattice data from the dynamical lattice QCD simulation of either the exotic light hybrid meson or tetraquark state.
Exotic and higher spin (> 1) mesons are still not throughly investigated in lattice QCD. Using a set of derivative based operators we report our exploratory study of these mesons in charmonium region. We use a 12^3 X 48 anisotropic (xi = 3) clover lattice with inverse temporal lattice spacing a^-1 = 6.05 GeV. Techniques developed in this exploratory study will be utilized in our future comprehensive study of light hybrid mesons that are to be explored in the 12 GeV GlueX experiment at Jefferson Laboratory.
Hybrid mesons, made from a quark, an antiquark and gluons, can have quantum numbers inaccessible to conventional quark-antiquark states. Confirmation of such states would give information on the role of "dynamical" color in low energy QCD. We present preliminary results for hybrid meson masses using light Wilson valence quarks.
We present highly-excited charmonium, $D_s$ and $D$ meson spectra from dynamical lattice QCD calculations with light quarks corresponding to $M_π \sim 240$ MeV and compare these to previous results with $M_π \sim 400$ MeV. Utilising the distillation framework, large bases of carefully constructed interpolating operators and a variational procedure, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited mesons. These include states with exotic quantum numbers which, along with a number with non-exotic quantum numbers, we identify as having excited gluonic degrees of …
Using a new quark-field construction algorithm and a large variational basis of operators, we extract a highly excited isovector meson spectrum on dynamical anisotropic lattices. We show how carefully constructed operators can be used to reliably identify the continuum spin of extracted states, overcoming the reduced cubic symmetry of the lattice. Using this method we extract, with confidence, excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+ and 2+-) and states of high spin, including for the first time in lattice QCD, spin-four states.
Since gluons in QCD are interacting fundamental constituents just as quarks are, we expect that in addition to mesons made from a quark and an antiquark, there should also be glueballs and hybrids (bound states of quarks, antiquarks and gluons). In general, these states would mix strongly with the conventional q-bar-q mesons. However, they can also have exotic quantum numbers inaccessible to q-bar-q mesons. Confirmation of such states would give information on the role of "dynamical" color in low energy QCD. In the quenched approximation we present a lattice calculation of the masses of mesons…
We summarize our measurement of the mass of the exotic $1^{-+}$ hybrid meson using an improved Kogut-Susskind action. We show results from both quenched and dynamical quark simulations and compare with results from Wilson quarks. Extrapolation of these results to the physical quark mass allows comparison with experimental candidates for the $1^{-+}$ hybrid meson.
We present a general class of operators resembling compact tetraquarks which have a range of colour-flavour-spin structures, transform irreducibly under the symmetries of the lattice and respect other relevant symmetries. These constructions are demonstrated in lattice QCD calculations with light quarks corresponding to $m_π=$ 391 MeV. Using the distillation framework, correlation functions involving large bases of meson-meson and tetraquark operators are computed in the isospin-1 hidden-charm and doubly-charmed sectors, and finite-volume spectra are extracted with the variational method. We f…
The status of non-perturbative QCD calculations for mesons with gluonic excitation is presented. Lattice results for the glueball spectrum are reviewed. For hybrid mesons, the heavy quark results are summarised and new results are presented for light quarks. Preliminary results for the spectrum of light-quark hybrid mesons indicate substantial mixing with quark model states for non-exotic $J^{PC}$. For the exotic $J^{PC}$ hybrid mesons, the $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$, $0^{+-}$ and $2^{+-}$ states are explored.
The spectral properties of hybrid meson interpolating fields are investigated. The quantum numbers of the meson are carried by smeared-source fermion operators and highly-improved chromo-electric and -magnetic field operators composed with APE-smeared links. The effective masses of standard and hybrid operators indicate that the ground state meson is effectively isolated using both standard and hybrid interpolating fields. Focus is placed on interpolating fields in which the large spinor components of the quark and antiquark fields are merged. In particular, the effective mass of the exotic $1…
Time correlation functions of a hybrid exotic meson operator, with JPC=1-+, generated in quenched lattice QCD are subjected to a (Bayesian) maximum entropy analysis. Five distinct spectral levels are uncovered. Their extrapolation into the physical pion mass region suggests a possible relationship to experimentally known states pi1(1400) and pi1(1600), and also to a state in the 2 GeV region carrying the same quantum numbers.
We extract to high statistical precision an excited spectrum of single-particle isoscalar mesons using lattice QCD, including states of high spin and, for the first time, light exotic JPC isoscalars. The use of a novel quark field construction has enabled us to overcome the long-standing challenge of efficiently including quark-annihilation contributions. Hidden-flavor mixing angles are extracted and while most states are found to be close to ideally flavor mixed, there are examples of large mixing in the pseudoscalar and axial sectors in line with experiment. The exotic JPC isoscalar states a…
We discuss in general the construction of gauge-invariant non-local meson operators on the lattice. We use such operators to study the $P$- and $D$-wave mesons as well as hybrid mesons in quenched QCD, with quark masses near the strange quark mass. The resulting spectra are compared with experiment for the orbital excitations. For the states produced by gluonic excitations (hybrid mesons) we find evidence of mixing for non-exotic quantum numbers. We give predictions for masses of the spin-exotic hybrid mesons with $J^{PC}=1^{-+},\ 0^{+-}$, and $2^{+-}$.
We present a spectrum of highly excited charmonium mesons up to around 4.5 GeV calculated using dynamical lattice QCD. Employing novel computational techniques and the variational method with a large basis of carefully constructed operators, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+, 2+-) and states with high spin. Calculations are performed on two lattice volumes with pion mass approximately 400 MeV and the mass determinations have high statistical precision even for excited states. We discuss the re…
We investigate the mass of the $1^{-+}$ exotic meson, created with hybrid interpolating fields. Access to light quark masses approaching 25 MeV is facilitated by the use of the Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action, and large ($20^3 \times 40$) lattices. Our results indicate that the $1^{-+}$ exotic exhibits significant curvature close to the chiral limit, and yield a $1^{-+}$ mass in agreement with the $π_1 (1600)$ candidate and exclusive of the $π_1 (1400)$.
We review lattice QCD results for glueballs (including a discussion of mixing with scalar mesons), hybrid mesons and other exotic states (such as $B_s B_s$ molecules).
In this article a systematic quantitative analysis of the isoscalar bosonic states is performed in the framework of supersymmetric light front holographic QCD. It is shown that the spectroscopy of the $η$ and $h$ mesons can be well described if one additional mass parameter -- which corresponds to the hard breaking of chiral $U(1)$ symmetry in standard QCD -- is introduced. The mass difference of the $η$ and $η'$ isoscalar mesons is then determined by the strange quark mass content of the $η'$. The theory also predicts the existence of isoscalar tetraquarks which are bound states of diquarks a…
We repeat our original simulations of the hybrid meson spectrum using the clover action, as a check on lattice artifacts. Our results for the 1-+ masses do not substantially change. We present preliminary results for the wave function of the 1-+ state in Coulomb gauge.
A decay width calculation for a hybrid exotic meson h, with JPC=1-+, is presented for the channel h->pi+a1. This quenched lattice QCD simulation employs Luescher's finite box method. Operators coupling to the h and pi+a1 states are used at various levels of smearing and fuzzing, and at four quark masses. Eigenvalues of the corresponding correlation matrices yield energy spectra that determine scattering phase shifts for a discrete set of relative pi+a1 momenta. Although the phase shift data is sparse, fits to a Breit-Wigner model are attempted, resulting in a decay width of about 60 MeV when a…
We present results of a decay width calculation for a hybrid exotic meson(h, JPC=1-+) in the decay channel h to pi+a1. This calculation uses quenched lattice QCD and Luescher's finite box method. Operators for the h and pi+a1 states are used in a correlation matrix which was expanded by varying the smearing and fuzzing levels at source and sink points. Scattering phase shifts for a discrete set of relative pi+a1 momenta are determined using eigenvalues of the correlation matrix and formulae derived by Luescher. The phase shift data is very sparse, but fits to a Breit-Wigner model are made, res…
We present the first determination of the hadronic decays of the lightest exotic $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ resonance in lattice QCD. Working with SU(3) flavor symmetry, where the up, down and strange quark masses approximately match the physical strange-quark mass giving $m_π\sim 700$ MeV, we compute finite-volume spectra on six lattice volumes which constrain a scattering system featuring eight coupled channels. Analytically continuing the scattering amplitudes into the complex energy plane, we find a pole singularity corresponding to a narrow resonance which shows relatively weak coupling to the open …
The mass of the $1^{-+}$ exotic meson, created with hybrid interpolating fields, is explored at light quark masses approaching 25 MeV ($m_π/ m_ρ\simeq 1/3$). Access to such light quark masses is facilitated by the use of the Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action. Additionally, we make use of large ($20^3 \times 40$) lattices to obtain good control of statistical and finite volume errors. Our results indicate that the $1^{-+}$ exotic exhibits significant curvature close the chiral limit, indicating previous linear extrapolations, far from the chiral regime, have overestimated the mas…
It is argued that exotic mesons consisting of two quarks and two antiquarks are not ruled out in quantum chromodynamics with a large number $N$ of colors, as generally thought. They can come in two varieties: short-lived tetraquarks with decay rates proportional to $N$, which would be unobservable if $N$ were sufficiently large, and long-lived tetraquarks with decay rates proportional to 1/N. The $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$ may be examples of these two varieties of exotic mesons.
We review our investigations devoted to the analysis of the resonances $ Z_{c}(3900)$, $Z_{c}(4430)$, $Z_{c}(4100)$, $X(4140)$, $X(4274)$, $a_1(1420)$ , $Y(4660)$, $X(2100)$, $X(2239)$ and $Y(2175)$ discovered in various processes by Belle, BaBar, BESIII, D0, CDF, CMS, LHCb and COMPASS collaborations. These resonances are considered as serious candidates to four-quark (tetraquark) exotic mesons. We treat all of them as diquark-antidiquark states with relevant spin-parities, find their masses and couplings, as well as explore their dominant strong decay channels. Calculations are performed in t…
We use QCD spectral sum rules (QSSR) and the factorization properties of molecule and four-quark currents to estimate the masses and couplings of the 0+ and 1+ molecules and four-quark at N2LO of PT QCD. We include in the OPE the contributions of non-perturbative condensates up to dimension-six. Within the Laplace sum rules approach (LSR) and in the MS-scheme, we summarize our results in Table 2, which agree within the errors with some of the observed XZ-like molecules or/and four-quark. Couplings of these states to the currents are also extracted. Our results are improvements of the LO ones i…
Some hadrons have the exotic quantum numbers that the traditional $\bar q q$ mesons and $qqq$ baryons can not reach, such as $J^{PC} = 0^{--}/0^{+-}/1^{-+}/2^{+-}/3^{-+}/4^{+-}$, etc. We investigate for the first time the exotic quantum number $J^{PC}=4^{+-}$, and study the fully-strange tetraquark states with such an exotic quantum number. We systematically construct all the diquark-antidiquark interpolating currents, and apply the method of QCD sum rules to calculate both the diagonal and off-diagonal correlation functions. The obtained results are used to construct three mixing currents tha…
Hybrid (exotic) mesons, which are important predictions of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), are states of quarks and anti-quarks bound by excited gluons. First principle lattice study of such states would help us understand the role of ``dynamical'' color in low energy QCD and provide valuable information for experimental search for these new particles. In this paper, we apply both improved gluon and quark actions to the hybrid mesons, which might be much more efficient than the previous works in reducing lattice spacing error and finite volume effect. Quenched simulations were done at $β=2.6$ an…
In this work we investigate the $X(3872)$ meson with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ in the framework of the thermal QCD sum rules method. We use a diquark-antidiquark current with the corresponding quantum numbers and calculate the two-point correlation function including contributions of non-perturbative condensates up to six dimensions. Analysis of the obtained thermal sum rule allows us to study contributions of a medium to the mass and coupling constant of the $X(3872)$ resonance. Our numerical calculations demonstrate that the mass and the meson-current coupling constant are insensitive …
We systematically re-examine the extraction of the masses and couplings of the 1^{-+} hybrid, four-quark and molecule mesons from QCD spectral sum rules (QSSR). To NLO for the perturbative and power corrections, the hybrid mass is M_H=1.81(6) GeV and M_H < 2.2(2) GeV from the positivity of the spectral function. In the same way, but to LO, the four-quark state mass is M_{4q}= 1.70(4) GeV and M_{4q} < 2.4(1) GeV, while the molecule mass is about 1.3(1) GeV. The observed π_1(1400) and π_1(1600) might be explained by a two-component mixing with the set of input masses (1.2-1.3 ; 1.70-1.74) GeV an…
Lattice QCD studies of the $Δ$ baryon resonance and the $K_0^\ast(700)$ and $a_0(980)$ meson resonances: the role of exotic operators in determining the finite-volume spectrum
Motivated by the LHCb's recent confirmation of $Z_1(4475)$ as the $J^P=1^+$ resonance, we investigate various exotic interpretations of $Z_1(4475)$, which may be an axial vector tetraquark state, the P-wave excitation of the S-wave $D_1 {\bar D}^\ast$ or $D_2 {\bar D}^\ast$ molecule, the S-wave molecule composed of a $D$ or $D^*$ meson and a D-wave vector $D$ meson, or the cousin molecular state of $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4020)$ composed of a $D$ or $D^*$ meson and their radial excitations. With the help of the heavy quark symmetry, we predict the typical radiative and hidden-charm and open-charm…
We discuss methods to obtain accurate hadronic spectra with propagating quarks. Comparing the determination of masses for spin-exotic hybrid mesons with glueball mass determinations, we conclude that quark propagators from all sites to all other sites would enable great improvement in the errors. Such propagators are achievable by using stochastic estimators. We discuss previous attempts and present our method for maximal variance reduction. This is a very promising technique and we illustrate it by obtaining the spectrum of ground state and excited B mesons in the limit where the $b$ quark is…
Recent progress in lattice calculations of properties of open-charm mesons, both regular and exotic, is reviewed, with an emphasis on spectroscopy. After reviewing recent calculations of excited state energy levels I will discuss progress in extracting hadronic masses and widths of charmed states from Lattice QCD simulations including low-lying scattering channels directly, to determine phase shift data and bound state/ resonance properties. With regard to other properties results from recent calculations of the $DD^*π$ and $DDρ$, $D^*D^*ρ$ couplings are presented. Beyond regular mesons, searc…
