Recently a novel dynamical state, called the {\it chimera death}, is discovered in a network of non locally coupled identical oscillators [A. Zakharova, M. Kapeller, and E. Schöll, Phy.Rev.Lett. 112, 154101 (2014)], which is defined as the coexistence of spatially coherent and incoherent oscillation death state. This state arises due to the interplay of non locality and symmetry breaking and thus bridges the gap between two important dynamical states, namely the chimera and oscillation death. In this paper we show that the chimera death can be induced in a network of generic identical oscillators with mean-field diffusive coupling and thus we establish that a non local coupling is not essential to obtain chimera death. We identify a new transition route to the chimera death state, namely the transition from in-phase synchronized oscillation to chimera death via global amplitude death state. We ascribe the occurrence of chimera death to the bifurcation structure of the network in the limiting condition and show that multi-cluster chimera death states can be achieved by a proper choice of initial conditions.
We find chimera states with respect to amplitude dynamics in a network of Stuart-Landau oscillators. These partially coherent and partially incoherent spatio-temporal patterns appear due to the interplay of nonlocal network topology and symmetry-breaking coupling. As the coupling range is increased, the oscillations are quenched, amplitude chimeras disappear and the network enters a symmetry-breaking stationary state. This particular regime is a novel pattern which we call chimera death. It is characterized by the coexistence of spatially coherent and incoherent inhomogeneous steady states and…
We consider a one-dimensional array of phase oscillators coupled via an auxiliary complex field. While in the seminal chimera studies by Kumamoto and Battogtokh only diffusion of the field was considered, we include advection which makes the coupling left-right asymmetric. Chimera starts to move and we demonstrate, that a weakly turbulent moving pattern appears. It possesses a relatively large synchronous domain where the phases are nearly equal, and a more disordered domain where the local driving field is small. For a dense system with a large number of oscillators, there are strong local co…
We investigate the significance of nonisochronicity parameter in a network of nonlocally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators with symmetry breaking form. We observe that the presence of nonisochronicity parameter leads to structural changes in the chimera death region while varying the strength of the interaction. This gives rise to the existence of different types of chimera death states such as multi-chimera death state, type-I periodic chimera death (PCD) state and, type-II periodic chimera death (PCD) state. We also find that the number of periodic domains in both the types of PCD states exp…
For a network of generic oscillators with nonlocal topology and symmetry-breaking coupling we establish novel partially coherent inhomogeneous spatial patterns, which combine the features of chimera states (coexisting incongruous coherent and incoherent domains) and oscillation death (oscillation suppression), which we call chimera death. We show that due to the interplay of nonlocality and breaking of rotational symmetry by the coupling two distinct scenarios from oscillatory behavior to a stationary state regime are possible: a transition from an amplitude chimera to chimera death via in-pha…
We report a novel spatiotemporal state, namely the chimera-like incongruous coexistence of {\it synchronized oscillation} and {\it stable steady state} (CSOD) in a realistic ecological network of nonlocally coupled oscillators. Unlike the {\it chimera} and {\it chimera death} state, in the CSOD state identical oscillators are self-organized into two coexisting spatially separated domains: In one domain neighboring oscillators show synchronized oscillation and in another domain the neighboring oscillators randomly populate either a synchronized oscillating state or a stable steady state (we cal…
The chimera state with co-existing coherent-incoherent dynamics has recently attracted a lot of attention due to its wide applicability. We investigate non-locally coupled identical chaotic maps with delayed interactions in the multiplex network framework and find that an interplay of delay and multiplexing brings about an enhanced or suppressed appearance of chimera state depending on the distribution as well as the parity of delay values in the layers. Additionally, we report a layer chimera state with an existence of one layer displaying coherent and another layer demonstrating incoherent d…
Chimera states in spatially extended networks of oscillators have some oscillators synchronised while the remainder are asynchronous. These states have primarily been studied in networks with nonlocal coupling, and more recently in networks with global coupling. Here we present three networks with only local coupling (diffusive, to nearest neighbours) which are numerically found to support chimera states. One of the networks is analysed using a self-consistency argument in the continuum limit, and this is used to find the boundaries of existence of a chimera state in parameter space.
A chimera state is a spatiotemporal pattern in which a network of identical coupled oscillators exhibits coexisting regions of asynchronous and synchronous oscillation. Two distinct classes of chimera states have been shown to exist: "spots" and "spirals." Here we study coupled oscillators on the surface of a sphere, a single system in which both spot and spiral chimera states appear. We present an analysis of the birth and death of spiral chimera states and show that although they coexist with spot chimeras, they are stable in disjoint regions of parameter space.

We study the transition from amplitude death (AD) to oscillation death (OD) state in limit-cycle oscillators coupled through mean-field diffusion. We show that this coupling scheme can induce an important transition from AD to OD even in {\it identical} limit cycle oscillators. We identify a parameter region where OD and a novel {\it nontrivial} AD (NT-AD) state coexist. This NT-AD state is unique in comparison with AD owing to the fact that it is created by a subcritical pitchfork bifurcation, and parameter mismatch does not support but destroy this state. We extend our study to a network of …
We analyze the consequences of symmetry breaking in the coupling in a network of globally coupled identical Stuart-Landau oscillators. We observe that symmetry breaking leads to increased disorderliness in the dynamical behavior of oscillatory states and consequently results in a rich variety of dynamical states. Depending on the strength of the nonisochronicity parameter, we find various dynamical states such as amplitude chimera, amplitude cluster, frequency chimera and frequency cluster states. In addition we also find disparate transition routes to recently observed chimera death state in …
In this paper we report the occurrence of chimera patterns in a network of neuronal oscillators, which are coupled through {\it local}, synaptic {\it gradient} coupling. We discover a new chimera pattern, namely the {\it imperfect traveling chimera} where the incoherent traveling domain spreads into the coherent domain of the network. Remarkably, we also find that chimera states arise even for {\it one-way} local coupling, which is in contrast to the earlier belief that only nonlocal, global or nearest neighbor local coupling can give rise to chimera; this find further relaxes the essential co…
In globally coupled ensembles of identical oscillators so-called chimera states can be observed. The chimera state is a symmetry-broken regime, where a subset of oscillators forms a cluster, a synchronized population, while the rest of the system remains a collection of non-synchronized, scattered units. We describe here a blinking chimera regime in an ensemble of seven globally coupled rotators (Kuramoto oscillators with inertia). It is characterized by a death-birth process, where a long-term stable cluster of four oscillators suddenly dissolves and is very quickly reborn with a new, reshuff…
We consider star networks of chaotic oscillators, with all end-nodes connected only to the central hub node, under diffusive coupling, conjugate coupling and mean-field type coupling. We observe the existence of chimeras in the end-nodes, which are identical in terms of the coupling environment and dynamical equations. Namely, the symmetry of the end-nodes is broken and co-existing groups with different synchronization features and attractor geometries emerge. Surprisingly, such chimera states are very wide-spread in this network topology, and large parameter regimes of moderate coupling stren…
We investigate the emergence of amplitude and frequency chimera states in ring-star networks consisting of identical Chua circuits connected via nonlocal diffusive, bidirectional coupling. We first identify single-well chimera patterns in a ring network under nonlocal coupling schemes. When a central node is added to the network, forming a ring-star network, the central node acts as the distributor of information, increasing the chances of synchronization. Numerical simulations show that the radial coupling strength $k$ between the central and the peripheral nodes acts as an order parameter le…
A death of oscillation is reported in a network of coupled synchronized oscillators in presence of additional repulsive coupling. The repulsive link evolves as an averaging effect of mutual interaction between two neighboring oscillators due to a local fault and the number of repulsive links grows in time when the death scenario emerges. Analytical condition for oscillation death is derived for two coupled Landau-Stuart systems. Numerical results also confirm oscillation death in chaotic systems such as a Sprott system and the Rössler oscillator. We explore the effect in large networks of glob…
In this work, we investigate gradient coupling effect on amplitude death in an array of N cou- pled nonidentical oscillators with no-flux boundary conditions and periodic boundary conditions respectively. We find that the effects of gradient coupling on amplitude death in diffusive coupled nonidentical oscillators is quite different between those two boundaries conditions. With no-flux boundary conditions, there is a system size related critical gradient coupling $r_c$ within which the gradient coupling tends to monotonically enlarge the amplitude death domain in the parameter space. With the …
In this piece of work, an important transition from amplitude death (AD) to oscillation death (OD) state in coupled Chua circuit has been explored for the first time. Here, mean field diffusively (MFD) coupled Chua circuits are when additionally coupled through direct coupling, it exhibits the AD-OD transition phenomena. The effect of design parameters and coupling parameters are investigated in details. For both identical and non-identical systems the AD make transition to OD through symmetry breaking. These are investigated through numerical simulations and are established through hardware e…
We explore analytically the oscillation quenching phenomena (amplitude death and oscillation death) in a coupled third order phase locked loop (PLL) both in periodic and chaotic mode. The phase locked loops are coupled through mean field diffusive coupling. The lower and upper limits of the quenched state are identified in the parameter space of the coupled PLL using Routh-Hurwitz technique. We further observe that the ability of convergence to the quenched state of coupled PLLs depends on the design parameters. For identical system both the system converges to homogeneous steady state whereas…
The revival of oscillation and maintaining rhythmicity in a network of coupled oscillators offer an open challenge to researchers as the cessation of oscillation often leads to a fatal system degradation and an irrecoverable malfunctioning in many physical, biological and physiological systems. Recently a general technique of restoration of rhythmicity in diffusively coupled networks of nonlinear oscillators has been proposed in [Zou et al. Nature Commun. 6:7709, 2015], where it is shown that a proper feedback parameter that controls the rate of diffusion can effectively revive oscillation fro…
We report the existence of diverse routes of transition from amplitude death (AD) to oscillation death (OD) in three different diffusively coupled systems, those are perturbed by a symmetry break- ing repulsive coupling link. For limit cycle systems the transition is through a pitchfork bifurcation (PB) as has been noted before, but in chaotic systems it can be through a saddle-node or a trans- critical bifurcation depending on the nature of the underlying dynamics of the individual systems. The diversity of the routes and their dependence on the complex dynamics of the coupled systems not onl…
We introduce a general mechanism for amplitude death in coupled synchronizable dynamical systems. It is known that when two systems are coupled directly, they can synchronize under suitable conditions. When an indirect feedback coupling through an environment or an external system is introduced in them, it is found to induce a tendency for anti-synchronization. We show that, for sufficient strengths, these two competing effects can lead to amplitude death. We provide a general stability analysis that gives the threshold values for onset of amplitude death. We study in detail the nature of the …
We study the effect of Kerr anharmonicity on the symmetry breaking phenomena of coupled quantum oscillators. We study two types of symmetry-breaking processes, namely the inhomogeneous steady state (or quantum oscillation death state) and quantum chimera state. Remarkably, it is found that Kerr nonlinearity hinders the process of symmetry-breaking in both the cases. We establish our results using direct simulation of quantum master equation and analysis of the stochastic semiclassical model. Interestingly, in the case of quantum oscillation death, an increase in the strength of Kerr nonlineari…
We demonstrate that diffusively coupled limit-cycle oscillators on random networks can exhibit various complex dynamical patterns. Reducing the system to a network analog of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, we argue that uniform oscillations can be linearly unstable with respect to spontaneous phase modulations due to diffusional coupling - the effect corresponding to the Benjamin-Feir instability in continuous media. Numerical investigations under this instability in random scale-free networks reveal a wealth of complex dynamical regimes, including partial amplitude death, clustering, an…
We study the quantum manifestations of homogeneous and inhomogeneous oscillation suppression states in coupled identical quantum oscillators. We consider quantum van der Pol oscillators coupled via weighted mean-field diffusive coupling and using the formalism of open quantum system we show that depending upon the coupling and the density of mean-field, two types of quantum amplitude death occurs, namely squeezed and nonsqueezed quantum amplitude death. Surprisingly, we find that the inhomogeneous oscillation suppression state (or the oscillation death state) does not occur in the quantum osci…
We report the transitions among different oscillation quenching states induced by the interplay of diffusive (direct) coupling and environmental (indirect) coupling in coupled identical oscillators. This coupling scheme was introduced by Resmi {\it et al}. [Phys. Rev. E, 84, 046212 (2011)] as a general scheme to induce amplitude death (AD) in nonlinear oscillators. Using a detailed bifurcation analysis we show that in addition to AD, which actually occurs only in a small region of parameter space, this coupling scheme can induce other oscillation quenching states, namely oscillation death (OD)…
The effects of a distributed 'weak generic kernel' delay on cyclically coupled limit cycle and chaotic oscillators are considered. For coupled Van der Pol oscillators (and in fact, other oscillators as well) the delay can produce transitions from amplitude death(AD) or oscillation death (OD) to Hopf bifurcation-induced periodic behavior, with the delayed limit cycle shrinking or growing as the delay is varied towards or away from the bifurcation point respectively. The transition from AD to OD is mediated here via a pitchfork bifurcation, as seen earlier for other couplings as well. Also, the …
We present a new coupling scheme to control spatio-temporal patterns and chimeras on 1-d and 2-d lattices and random networks of discrete dynamical systems. The scheme involves coupling with an external lattice or network of damped systems. When the system network and external network are set in a feedback loop, the system network can be controlled to a homogeneous steady state or synchronized periodic state with suppression of the chaotic dynamics of the individual units. The control scheme has the advantage that its design does not require any prior information about the system dynamics or i…
We demonstrate that strongly asymmetric limit cycles can be observed in the system of three identical ring oscillators (3-gene networks known as Repressilators) globally coupled by signal molecule diffusion added to the model in a way like the known bacterial "quorum-sensing" mechanism. These cycles are stable over a wide interval of the coupling strengths where they expel the dominant hyperchaotic regime existing in three Repressilators in very large areas of parameters. The bifurcations of the inhomogeneous limit cycle, with a high-amplitude orbit for one oscillator and two low-amplitude ide…
We investigate different emergent dynamics namely oscillation quenching and revival of oscillation in a global network of identical oscillators coupled with diffusive (positive) delay coupling as it is perturbed by symmetry breaking localized repulsive delayed interaction. Starting from the oscillatory states (OS) we systematically identify three types of transition phenomena in the parameter space: (1) The system may reach inhomogeneous steady states (IHSS) from the homogeneous steady state (HSS) sometimes called as the transition from amplitude death (AD) to oscillation death (OD) state i.e.…
