The studies of heavy quarkonium inclusive production and polarization at LHC are becoming crucial to solve the puzzle of hadron formation. The results by CMS and the other LHC experiments are compactly presented for the five S-wave states J/Psi, Psi(2S) and Y(nS) (n=1,2,3) and briefly discussed especially in comparison to the theoretical predictions provided by Non Relativistic QCD.
The potential of the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb detectors for the measurement of quarkonium in heavy-ion collisions, both in nucleus-nucleus (A-A) and in proton-nucleus (p-A) interactions, in the years 2015 until about 2030 in the LHC Runs 2, 3 and 4 with larger statistics and detector upgrades is described. A selection of newly available observables is discussed.
The process $pp \to W^-c$ produces polarized charm quarks. The polarization is expected to be partly retained in $Λ_c$ baryons when those form in the $c$-quark hadronization. We argue that it will likely be possible for ATLAS and CMS to measure the $Λ_c$ polarization in the $W$+$c$ samples in Run 2 of the LHC. This can become the first measurement ever of a longitudinal polarization of charm quarks. Its results will provide a unique input to the understanding of polarization transfer in fragmentation. They will also allow applying the same measurement technique to other (e.g., new physics) sam…
$J/ψ$- or $Υ$-pair production at the LHC are promising processes to study the gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) which remain very poorly known. In this article, we improve on previous results by including the TMD evolution in the computation of the observables such as the pair-transverse-momentum spectrum and asymmetries arising from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons. We show that the azimuthal asymmetries generated by the gluon polarization are reduced compared to the tree level case but are still of measurable size (in the 5%-10% range). Such asymmetri…
Being able to measure the polarization of quarks produced in various processes at the LHC would be of fundamental significance. Measuring the polarizations of quarks produced in new physics processes, once discovered, can provide crucial information about the new physics Lagrangian. In a series of recent papers, we have investigated how quark polarization measurements can be done in practice. The polarizations of heavy quarks (b and c) are expected to be largely preserved in the lightest baryons they hadronize into, the Lambda_b and Lambda_c, respectively. Furthermore, it is known experimental…
The polarization of inclusive J/$ψ$ and $Υ(1{\rm S})$ produced in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV at the LHC is measured with the ALICE detector. The study is carried out by reconstructing the quarkonium through its decay to muon pairs in the rapidity region $2.5<y<4$ and measuring the polar and azimuthal angular distributions of the muons. The polarization parameters $λ_θ$, $λ_ϕ$ and $λ_{θϕ}$ are measured in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames, in the transverse momentum interval $2<p_{\rm T}<10$ GeV/$c$ and $p_{\rm T}<15$ GeV/$c$ for the J/$ψ$ and $Υ(1{\rm S})$,…
We review the results on the bottomonium system from the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Measurements have been carried out at different center-of-mass energies in proton collisions and in collisions involving heavy ions. These include precision measurements of cross sections and polarizations, shedding light on hadroproduction mechanisms, and the observation of quarkonium sequential suppression, a notable indication of quark-gluon plasma formation. The observation of the production of bottomonium pairs is also reported along with searches for new states. We close with a brief out…
We describe the latest results obtained by the CMS Collaboration on top quark spin and polarization properties. The top quark spin asymmetry is measured both targeting single-top quark production in the $t$-channel and single-top quark production in association with a Z boson. Additionally, all the independent coefficients of the spin-dependent part of the top quark-antiquark production density matrix are measured and the results are extrapolated to the High-Luminosity LHC scenario.
Differential production cross sections of J/$ψ$ and $ψ$(2S) charmonium and $Υ$(nS) (n = 1, 2, 3) bottomonium states are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, with data collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb$^{-1}$ for the J/$ψ$ and 2.7 fb$^{-1}$ for the other mesons. The five quarkonium states are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, for dimuon rapidity $|y| <$ 1.2. The double-differential cross sections for each state are measured as a function of $y$ and transverse momentum, and compared to theoretical expect…
Hard probes are indispensable tools to study the hot and dense quark-gluon matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. These probes are created in the collision itself with a small cross section, and they serve as indicators of various properties of the medium, such as temperature, viscosity, energy density, transport coefficients. Hard probes measured by the CMS and ATLAS experiments at the LHC include highly energetic jets and charged particles, quarkonium states, and electroweak gauge bosons. An overview of those recent experimental results will be given that represent the pa…
We study the Single-Parton-Scattering (SPS) production of double quarkonia (J/psi+J/psi, J/psi+Upsilon, and Upsilon+Upsilon) in pp and pp(bar) collisions at the LHC and the Tevatron as measured by the CMS, ATLAS, LHCb, and D0 experiments in the Colour-Evaporation Model (CEM), based on the quark-hadron-duality, including Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections up to alpha_s^5. To do so, we also perform the first true NLO --up to alpha_s^4-- study of the p_T-differential cross section for single-quarkonium production. This allows us to fix the non-perturbative CEM parameters at NLO accuracy …
In a previous paper, we had modified Non-Relativistic QCD as it applies to quarkonium production by taking into account the effect of perturbative soft-gluon emission from the colour-octet quarkonium states. We tested the model by fitting the unknown non-perturbative parameter in the model from Tevatron data and using that to make parameter-free predictions for $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ production at the LHC. In this paper, we study $χ_c$ production: we fit as before the unknown matrix-element using data from Tevatron. We, then, extend the results of the previous paper for $J/ψ$ production by calculating…
We show that the production of J/psi or Upsilon pairs in unpolarised pp collisions is currently the best process to measure the momentum-distribution of linearly-polarised gluons inside unpolarised protons through the study of azimuthal asymmetries. Not only the short-distance coefficients for such reactions induce the largest possible cos 4 phi modulations, but analysed data are already available. Among the various final states previously studied in unpolarised pp collisions within the TMD factorisation approach, di-J/psi production exhibits by far the largest asymmetries, up to 50% in the re…
The degree of top polarization and strength of $t\bar{t}$ correlation are dependent on production dynamics, decay mechanism, and choice of the observables. At the LHC, measurement of the top polarization and spin correlations in $t\bar{t}$ production is possible through various observables related to the angular distribution of decay leptons. A measurement of differential distribution provides a precision test of the standard model of particle physics and probes for deviations, which could be a sign of new physics. In particular, the phase space for the super-symmetric partner of the top quark…
In view of the large discrepancy about the associated production of a prompt $J/ψ$ and a $Z$ boson between the ATLAS data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and theoretical predictions for Single Parton Scattering (SPS) contributions, we perform an evaluation of the corresponding cross section at one loop accuracy (Next-to-Leading Order, NLO) in a quark-hadron-duality approach, also known as the Colour-Evaporation Model (CEM). This work is motivated by (i) the extremely disparate predictions based on the existing NRQCD fits conjugated with the absence of a full NLO NRQCD computation and (ii) the fact that we…
We study the production and polarization of $J/ψ$ mesons within a jet in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. We define the $J/ψ$-jet fragmentation function as a ratio of differential jet cross sections with and without the reconstructed $J/ψ$ in the jet. We demonstrate that this is a very useful observable to help explore the $J/ψ$ production mechanism, and to differentiate between different NRQCD global fits based on inclusive $J/ψ$ cross sections. Furthermore, we propose to measure the polarization of $J/ψ$ mesons inside the jet, which can provide even more stringent constraints for the hea…
In this work, we aim to provide a comprehensive and largely model independent investigation on prospects to detect long-lived multiply charged particles at the LHC. We consider particles with spin 0 and $\frac{1}{2}$, with electric charges in range $1 \le |Q/e| \le 8$, which are singlet or triplet under $SU(3)_C$. Such particles might be produced as particle-antiparticle pairs and propagate through detectors, or form a positronium(quarkonium)-like bound state. We consider both possibilities and estimate lower mass bounds on new particles, that can be provided by ATLAS, CMS and MoEDAL experimen…
The measurements of b quark, quarkonium and exotic state production performed with the ATLAS and CMS experiments at sqrt(s)=7 TeV are presented. The b-quark production cross section is measured both in inclusive and fully reconstructed B hadron decays. The results are compared with QCD expectations at tree-level and NLO.
Studies of quarkonium production in heavy-ion collisions can be used for probing QGP properties. The suppression and regeneration of bound quarkonium states is sensitive to the medium properties. Modifications of the quarkonium polarization in Pb-Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions may give further insight into the suppression and regeneration mechanisms in the QGP. Quarkonia are also sensitive to the initial stages of heavy-ion collisions, and measurements in photonuclear collisions may help constrain the nuclear gluon-distribution at low Bjorken-$x$. In this work, recent quarkonium m…
The combination of measurements of the W boson polarization in top quark decays performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations is presented. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb$^{-1}$ for each experiment. The measurements used events containing one lepton and having different jet multiplicities in the final state. The results are quoted as fractions of W bosons with longitudinal ($F_0$), left-handed ($F_\mathrm{L}$), or right-handed ($F_\mathrm{R}$) polari…
The hadroproduction of the radially excited heavy-quarkonium states $ψ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ at high energies is studied in the parton reggeization approach and the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD at lowest order in the strong-coupling constant $α_s$ and the relative heavy-quark velocity $v$. A satisfactory description of the $ψ(2S)$ transverse-momentum ($p_T$) distributions measured by ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S}=7$ TeV is obtained using the color-octet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) extracted from CDF data at $\sqrt{S}=1.96$ TeV. The importance of…
Based on the potential nonrelativistic QCD formalism, we compute the nonrelativistic QCD long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) for inclusive production of $S$-wave heavy quarkonia. This greatly reduces the number of nonperturbative unknowns and brings in a substantial enhancement in the predictive power of the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism. We obtain improved determinations of the LDMEs and find cross sections and polarizations of $J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, and excited $Υ$ states that agree well with LHC data. Our results may have important implications in pinning down the heavy quarkonium …
In order to disentangle CNM effects from the ``hot'' QGP effects, quarkonium production is studied in p--Pb collisions in which QGP formation is not expected. ALICE has measured the $Υ$ production in p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at backward ($-$4.46 $<y_{\rm cms}<$ $-$2.96) and forward (2.03 $< y_{\rm cms}<$ 3.53) rapidity down to zero transverse momentum. At forward rapidity, a suppression of $Υ$(1S) production in p--Pb collisions is observed compared to the binary-scaled yield in pp collisions in the same kinematic domain while at backward rapidity no significant suppre…
Based on the hypothesis that the $X(3872)$ exotic hadron is a mixture of $χ_{c1}(2P)$ and other states and that its prompt hadroproduction predominately proceeds via its $χ_{c1}(2P)$ component, we calculate the prompt-$X(3872)$ polarization at the CERN LHC through next-to-leading order in $α_s$ within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD, including both the color-singlet $^3\!P_1^{[1]}$ and color-octet $^3\!S_1^{[8]}$ $c\bar c$ Fock states. We also consider the polarization of the $J/ψ$ produced by the subsequent $X(3872)$ decay. We predict that, under ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb experi…
