In this work we investigate the effect of the convolutional network depth on its accuracy in the large-scale image recognition setting. Our main contribution is a thorough evaluation of networks of increasing depth using an architecture with very small (3x3) convolution filters, which shows that a significant improvement on the prior-art configurations can be achieved by pushing the depth to 16-19 weight layers. These findings were the basis of our ImageNet Challenge 2014 submission, where our team secured the first and the second places in the localisation and classification tracks respectively. We also show that our representations generalise well to other datasets, where they achieve state-of-the-art results. We have made our two best-performing ConvNet models publicly available to facilitate further research on the use of deep visual representations in computer vision.
A major barrier to the personalized Human Activity Recognition using wearable sensors is that the performance of the recognition model drops significantly upon adoption of the system by new users or changes in physical/ behavioral status of users. Therefore, the model needs to be retrained by collecting new labeled data in the new context. In this study, we develop a transfer learning framework using convolutional neural networks to build a personalized activity recognition model with minimal user supervision.
We studied the feasibility of recognizing individual right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) using convolutional neural networks. Prior studies have shown that CNNs can be used in wide range of classification and categorization tasks such as automated human face recognition. To test applicability of deep learning to whale recognition we have developed several models based on best practices from literature. Here, we describe the performance of the models. We conclude that machine recognition of whales is feasible and comment on the difficulty of the problem
Convolutional neural networks have become a popular research in the field of finger vein recognition because of their powerful image feature representation. However, most researchers focus on improving the performance of the network by increasing the CNN depth and width, which often requires high computational effort. Moreover, we can notice that not only the importance of pixels in different channels is different, but also the importance of pixels in different positions of the same channel is different. To reduce the computational effort and to take into account the different importance of pi…

Face recognition has been an active research area in the past few decades. In general, face recognition can be very challenging due to variations in viewpoint, illumination, facial expression, etc. Therefore it is essential to extract features which are invariant to some or all of these variations. Here a new image representation, called scattering transform/network, has been used to extract features from faces. The scattering transform is a kind of convolutional network which provides a powerful multi-layer representation for signals. After extraction of scattering features, PCA is applied to…

In this paper, inspired by the normalization and detrending methods, we propose adaptive detrending (AD) for temporal normaliza…

Human action recognition is one of the challenging tasks in computer vision. The current action recognition methods use computationally expensive models for learning spatio-temporal dependencies of the action. Models utilizing RGB channels and optical flow separately, models using a two-stream fusion technique, and models consisting of both convolutional neural network (CNN) and long-short term memory (LSTM) network are few examples of such complex models. Moreover, fine-tuning such complex models is computationally expensive as well. This paper proposes a deep neural network architecture for …

The IDMM effectively encodes both spatial and temporal information and allows the fine-tuning with existing ConvNet models for classification without introducing millions of…
This paper investigates body bones from skeleton data for skeleton based action recognition. Body joints, as the direct result of mature pose estimation technologies, are always the key concerns of traditional action recognition methods. However, instead of joints, we humans naturally identify how the human body moves according to shapes, lengths and places of bones, which are more obvious and stable for observation. Hence given graphs generated from skeleton data, we propose to develop convolutions over graph edges that correspond to bones in human skeleton. We describe an edge by integrating…

This paper proposes a two-stream flow-guided convolutional attention networks for action recognition in videos. The central idea is that optical flows, when properly compensated for the camera motion, can be used to guide attention to the human foreground. We thus develop cross-link layers from the temporal network (trained on flows) to the spatial network (trained on RGB frames). These cross-link layers guide the spatial-stream to pay more attention to the human foreground areas and be less affected by background clutter. This paper investigates the problem of aerial vehicle recognition using a text-guided deep convolutional neural network classifier. The network receives an aerial image and a desired class, and makes a yes or no output by matching the image and the textual description of the desired class. We train and test our model on a synthetic aerial dataset and our desired classes consist of the combination of the class types and colors of the vehicles. This strategy helps when considering more classes in testing than in training.

In this paper, we propose a novel framework for dynamic 3D face identification/recognition based on facial keypoints. Each dynamic sequence of facial expressions is represented as a spatio-temporal graph, which is constructed using 3D faci…
