We study consequences of long-range elasticity in thermally assisted dynamics of yield stress materials. Within a two-dimensinal mesoscopic model we calculate the mean-square displacement and the dynamical structure factor for tracer particle trajectories. The ballistic regime at short time scales is associated with a compressed exponential decay in the dynamical structure factor, followed by a subdiffusive crossover prior to the onset of diffusion. We relate this crossover to spatiotemporal correlations and thus go beyond established mean field predictions.
Knowing the stress within a soft material is of fundamental interest to basic research and practical applications, such as soft matter devices, biomaterial engineering, and medical sciences. However, it is challenging to measure stress fields in situ in a non-invasive way. It becomes even more difficult if the mechanical properties of the material are unknown or altered by the stress. Here we present a robust non-destructive technique capable of measuring in situ stress and strain in elastically deformed thin films without the need to know their material properties. The technique is based on m…
Invaginations are partial enclosures formed by surfaces. Typically formed by biological membranes; they abound in nature. In this paper, we consider fundamentally different structures: elastically stabilized invaginations. Focusing on spherical invaginations formed by elastic membranes, we carried out experiments and mathematical modeling to understand the stress and strain fields underlying stable structures. Friction plays a key role in stabilization, and consequently the required force balance is an inequality. Using a novel scheme, we were able to find stable solutions of the balance equat…
We formulate a microscopic, force-level, activated dynamics-based statistical-mechanical theory for the continuous startup nonlinear shear-rheology of ultra-dense glass-forming hard-sphere fluids and colloidal suspensions in the context of the ECNLE approach. Activated structural relaxation is described as a coupled local-nonlocal event involving caging and longer-range collective elasticity which controls the characteristic stress relaxation time. Theoretical predictions for the deformation-induced mobility enhancement, onset of relaxation acceleration at low values of stress, strain, or shea…
We analyze multiple new issues concerning activated relaxation in glassy hard sphere fluids and molecular and polymer liquids based on the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation (ECNLE) theory. By invoking a high temperature reference state, a near universality of the apparent dynamic localization length scale is predicted for liquids of widely varying fragility, a result that is relevant to recent simulation studies and quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements. In contrast, in the same format strongly non-universal behavior is found for the activation barrier that controls lo…
The thermally activated motion of dislocations across fields of obstacles distributed at random and in a correlated manner, in separate models, is studied by means of computer simulations. The strain rate sensitivity and strength are evaluated in terms of the obstacle strength, temperature and applied shear stress. Above a threshold stress, the dislocation motion undergoes a transition from smooth to jerky, i.e. obstacles are overcome in a correlated manner at high stresses, while at low stresses they are overcome individually. This leads to a significant reduction of the strain rate sensitivi…
Dispersing small particles in a liquid can produce surprising behaviors when the solids fraction becomes large: rapid shearing drives these systems out of equilibrium and can lead to dramatic increases in viscosity (shear-thickening) or even solidification (shear jamming). These phenomena occur above a characteristic onset stress when particles are forced into frictional contact. Here we show via simulations how this can be understood within a framework that abstracts details of the forces acting at particle-particle contacts into general stress-activated constraints on relative particle movem…
We theoretically study the effect of external deformation on activated structural relaxation and elementary aspects of the nonlinear mechanical response of glassy hard sphere fluids in the context of the nonequilibrium version of the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation (ECNLE) theory. ECNLE theory describes activated relaxation as a coupled local-nonlocal event involving local caging and longer range collective elasticity, with the latter becoming more important with increasing packing fraction. The central new question is how this physical picture, and the relative importance o…
We propose a coarse-grained model to investigate stress relaxation in star-polymer networks induced by dynamic bond exchange processes. We show how the swapping mechanism, once activated, allows the network to reconfigure, exploring distinct topological configurations, all of them characterised by complete extent of reaction. Our results reveal the important role played by topological defects in mediating the exchange reaction and speeding up stress relaxation. The model provides a representation of the dynamics in vitrimers, a new class of polymers characterized by bond swap mechanisms which …
In soft amorphous materials, shear cessation after large shear deformation leads to structures having residual shear stress. The origin of these states and the distribution of the local shear stresses within the material is not well understood, despite its importance for the change in material properties and consequent applications. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations of a model dense non-Brownian soft amorphous material to probe the non-trivial relaxation process towards a residual stress state. We find that, similar to thermal glasses, an increase in shear rate prior to the s…
When submitted to a constant mechanical load, many amorphous solids display power law creep followed by fluidization. A fundamental understanding of these processes is still far from being achieved. Here, we characterize creep and fluidization on the basis of a mesoscopic viscoplastic model that includes thermally activated yielding events and a broad distribution of energy barriers, which may be lowered under the effect of a local deformation. We relate the creep exponent observed before fluidization to the width of barrier distribution and to the specific form of stress redistribution follow…
The shear-driven drainage of capillary grooves filled with viscous liquid is a dynamic wetting phenomenon relevant to numerous industrial processes and novel lubricant-infused surfaces. Prior work has reported that a finite length $L_\infty$ of the capillary groove can remain indefinitely filled with liquid even when large shear stresses are applied. The mechanism preventing full drainage is attributed to a balance between the shear-driven flow and a counterflow driven by capillary pressures caused by deformation of the free surface. The final equilibrium length $L_\infty$ is uniquely determin…
Predicting the time-dependent yielding of colloidal gels under constant stress enables control of their mechanical stability and transport. Using rotational rheometry, we show that the shear rate of colloidal gels during an early stage of deformation known as primary creep can forecast an eventual yielding. Irrespective of whether the gel strain-softens or strain-hardens, the shear rate before failure exhibits a characteristic power-law decrease as a function of time, distinct from the linear viscoelastic response. We model this early-stage behavior as a series of uncorrelated local plastic ev…
