We present a comprehensive analysis of planetary phase variations, including possible planetary light offsets, using eighteen quarters of data from the Kepler space telescope. After correcting for systematics, we found fourteen systems with significant detections in each of the phase curve components: planet's phase function, secondary eclipse, Doppler boosting and ellipsoidal variations. We model the full phase curve simultaneously, including primary and secondary transits, and derive albedos, day- and night-side temperatures and planet masses. Most planets manifest low optical geometric albedos (<0.25), with the exception of Kepler-10b, Kepler-91b and KOI-13b. We find that KOI-13b, with a small eccentricity of 0.0006+\-0.0001, is the only planet for which an eccentric orbit is favored. We detect a third harmonic with an amplitude of 1.9+\-0.2 ppm for HAT-P-7b for the first time, and confirm the third harmonic for KOI-13b reported in Esteves et al. : both could be due to their spin-orbit misalignments. For six planets, we report a planetary brightness peak offset from the substellar point: of those, the hottest two (Kepler-76b and HAT-P-7b) exhibit pre-eclipse shifts or to the evening-side, while the cooler four (Kepler-7b, Kepler-8b, Kepler-12b and Kepler-41b) peak post-eclipse or on the morning-side. Our findings dramatically increase the number of Kepler planets with detected planetary light offsets, and provide the first evidence in the Kepler data for a correlation between the peak offset direction and the planet's temperature. Such a correlation could arise if thermal emission dominates light from hotter planets that harbor hot spots shifted toward the evening-side, as theoretically predicted, while reflected light dominates cooler planets with clouds on the planet's morning-side.
Refraction can lead to a brightening just before ingress and just after egress of a transit, as light passes through the exoplanet's atmosphere and is refracted into our line of sight. Refraction just outside of transit has been seen and modeled in our own solar system during transits of Venus. For short-period planets, the model of Sidis and Sari (2010 ApJ,720,904) implies refraction peaks typically under 100 parts per million and comparable in duration to ingress and egress. Kepler photometry currently provides the best opportunity for detecting refraction. We search for the signature of ref…
We determine probabilities of physical association for stars in blended Kepler Objects of Interest, and find that $14.5\%^{+3.8\%}_{-3.4\%}$ of companions within $\sim4\arcsec$ are consistent with being physically unassociated with their primary. This produces a better understanding of potential false positives in the Kepler catalog and will guide models of planet formation in binary systems. Physical association is determined through two methods of calculating multi-band photometric parallax using visible and near-infrared adaptive optics observation of 84 KOI systems with 104 contaminating c…
We present ground-based infrared transit observations for four dynamically interacting \textit{Kepler} planets, including Kepler-29b, Kepler-36c, KOI-1783.01, and Kepler-177c, obtained using the Wide-field Infrared Camera on the Hale 200" telescope at Palomar Observatory. By utilizing an engineered diffuser and custom guiding software, we mitigate time-correlated telluric and instrumental noise sources in these observations. We achieve an infrared photometric precision comparable to or better than that of space-based observatories such as the \textit{Spitzer Space Telescope}, and detect transi…
Binary stars are places of complex stellar interactions. While all binaries are in principle converging towards a state of circularization, many eccentric systems are found even in advanced stellar phases. In this work we discuss the sample of binaries with a red-giant component, discovered from observations of the NASA Kepler space mission. We first discuss which effects and features of tidal interactions are detectable in photometry, spectroscopy and the seismic analysis. In a second step, the sample of binary systems observed with Kepler, is compared to the well studied sample of Verbunt & …
We present the discovery of Kepler-88 d ($P_d = 1403\pm14$ days, $M\mathrm{sin}i_d = 965\pm44\,M_\oplus = 3.04\pm0.14\,M_J$, $e_d = 0.41\pm0.03$) based on six years of radial velocity (RV) follow-up from the W. M. Keck Observatory HIRES spectrograph. Kepler-88 has two previously identified planets. Kepler-88 b (KOI-142.01) transits in the NASA \Kepler\ photometry and has very large transit timing variations. \citet{Nesvorny2013} perfomed a dynamical analysis of the TTVs to uniquely identify the orbital period and mass of the perturbing planet (Kepler-88 c), which was later was confirmed with R…
NASA's Kepler mission observed background regions across its field of view for more than three consecutive years using custom designed super apertures (EXBA masks). Since these apertures were designed to capture a region of the sky rather than single targets, the Kepler Science Data Processing pipeline produced Target Pixel Files, but did not produce light curves for the sources within these background regions. In this work we produce light curves for $9,327$ sources observed in the EXBA masks. These light curves are generated using aperture photometry estimated from the instrument's Pixel Res…
A consistent analysis of three years of ground- and space-based photometry of TrES-2
Motivated by the Kepler K2 time series of Titan, we present an aperture optimization technique for extracting photometry of saturated moving targets with high temporally- and spatially-varying backgrounds. Our approach uses $k$-means clustering to identify interleaved families of images with similar Point-Spread Function and saturation properties, optimizes apertures for each family independently, then merges the time series through a normalization procedure. By applying $k$-means aperture optimization to the K2 Titan data, we achieve $\leq$0.33% photometric scatter in spite of background leve…
Kepler Mission's single-band photometry suffers from astrophysical false positives, the most common of background eclipsing binaries (BEBs) and companion transiting planets (CTPs). Multi-color photometry can reveal the color-dependent depth feature of false positives and thus exclude them. In this work, we aim to estimate the fraction of false positives that are unable to be classified by Kepler alone but can be identified with their color-dependent depth feature if a reference band (z, Ks and TESS) were adopted in follow-up observation. We build up physics-based blend models to simulate multi…
The Kepler mission has provided a wealth of data, revealing new insights in time-domain astronomy. However, Kepler's single band-pass has limited studies to a single wavelength. In this work we build a data-driven, pixel-level model for the Pixel Response Function (PRF) of Kepler targets, modeling the image data from the spacecraft. Our model is sufficiently flexible to capture known detector effects, such as non-linearity, intra-pixel sensitivity variations, and focus change. In theory, the shape of the Kepler PRF should also be weakly wavelength dependent, due to optical chromatic aberration…
Kepler 18-b, c, and d: A System Of Three Planets Confirmed by Transit Timing Variations, Lightcurve Validation, Spitzer Photometry and Radial Velocity Measurements
We present a detailed characterization of the Kepler-411 system (KOI 1781). This system was previously known to host two transiting planets: one with a period of 3 days ($R=2.4R_\oplus$; Kepler-411b) and one with a period of 7.8 days ($R=4.4R_\oplus$; Kepler-411c), as well as a transiting planetary candidate with a 58-day period ($R=3.3R_\oplus$; KOI 1781.03) from Kepler photometry. Here, we combine Kepler photometry data and new transit timing variation (TTV) measurements from all the Kepler quarters with previous adaptive-optics imaging results, and dynamical simulations, in order to constra…
Planet-Planet Eclipse and the Rossiter-McLaughlin Effect of a Multiple Transiting System: Joint Analysis of the Subaru Spectroscopy and the Kepler Photometry
By design, model-based approaches for flagging transiting exoplanets in light curves, such as boxed least squares, excel at detecting planets with low S/N at the expense of finding signals that are not well described by the assumed model, such as self-lensing binaries, disintegrating or evaporating planets, or planets with large rings. So far, such signals have typically been found through visual searches by professional or citizen scientists, or by inspection of the photometric power-spectra. We present a nonparametric detection algorithm, for short duty-cycle periodic signals in photometric …
The study of young Sun-like stars is of fundamental importance to understand the magnetic activity and rotational evolution of the Sun. Space-borne photometry by the Kepler telescope provides unprecedented datasets to investigate these phenomena in Sun-like stars. We present a new analysis of the entire Kepler photometric time series of the moderately young Sun-like star Kepler-17 that is accompanied by a transiting hot Jupiter. We applied a maximum-entropy spot model to the long-cadence out-of-transit photometry of the target to derive maps of the starspot filling factor versus the longitude …
We present an update to the EVEREST K2 pipeline that addresses various limitations in the previous version and improves the photometric precision of the de-trended light curves. We develop a fast regularization scheme for third order pixel level decorrelation (PLD) and adapt the algorithm to include the PLD vectors of neighboring stars to enhance the predictive power of the model and minimize overfitting, particularly for faint stars. We also modify PLD to work for saturated stars and improve its performance on extremely variable stars. On average, EVEREST 2.0 light curves have 10-20% higher p…
Apart from thousands of `regular' exoplanet candidates, Kepler satellite has discovered a few stars exhibiting peculiar eclipse-like events. They are most probably caused by disintegrating bodies transiting in front of the star. However, the nature of the bodies and obscuration events, such as those observed in KIC8462852, remain mysterious. A swarm of comets or artificial alien mega-structures have been proposed as an explanation for the latter object. We explore the possibility that such eclipses are caused by the dust clouds associated with massive parent bodies orbiting the host star. We a…
Kepler-419 is a planetary system discovered by the Kepler photometry which is known to harbour two massive giant planets: [...] Here we present new radial velocity (RV) measurements secured over more than two years with the SOPHIE spectrograph, where both planets are clearly detected. The RV data is modelled together with the Kepler photometry using a photodynamical model. The inclusion of velocity information breaks the $MR^{-3}$ degeneracy inherent in timing data alone, allowing us to measure the absolute stellar and planetary radii and masses. With uncertainties of 12% and 13% for the stell…
NASA's Kepler, K2 and TESS missions employ Simple Aperture Photometry (SAP) to derive time-series photometry, where an aperture is estimated for each star, and pixels containing each star are summed to create a single light curve. This method is simple, but in crowded fields the derived time-series can be highly contaminated. The alternate method of fitting a Point Spread Function (PSF) to the data is able to account for crowding, but is computationally expensive. In this paper, we present a new approach to extracting photometry from these time-series missions, which fits the PSF directly, but…
We report the discovery of a Neptune-size (R_p = 3.87 +/- 0.06 R_Earth) transiting circumbinary planet, Kepler-1661 b, found in the Kepler photometry. The planet has a period of ~175 days and its orbit precesses with a period of only 35 years. The precession causes the alignment of the orbital planes to vary, and the planet is in a transiting configuration only ~7% of the time as seen from Earth. As with several other Kepler circumbinary planets, Kepler-1661 b orbits close to the stability radius, and is near the (hot) edge of habitable zone. The planet orbits a single-lined, grazing eclipsing…
We present stellar and planetary properties for 1305 Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) hosting 2025 planet candidates observed as part of the California-Kepler Survey. We combine spectroscopic constraints, presented in Paper I, with stellar interior modeling to estimate stellar masses, radii, and ages. Stellar radii are typically constrained to 11%, compared to 40% when only photometric constraints are used. Stellar masses are constrained to 4%, and ages are constrained to 30%. We verify the integrity of the stellar parameters through comparisons with asteroseismic studies and Gaia parallaxes.…

Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai 200030, China(上海天文台,中国科学院,上海200030,中国);School of Astronomy and Space Sciences, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 101408, China(中国科学院大学天文与空间科学学院,北京101408,中国);Science Talent Training Center, Gainesville, FL, 32606 USA(科学人才培训中心,佛罗里达州盖恩斯维尔,32606 USA)
In favourable conditions, the density of transiting planets in multiple systems can be determined from photometry data alone. Dynamical information can be extracted from light curves, providing modelling is done self-consistently, i.e. using a photodynamical model, which simulates the individual photometric observations instead of the more generally used transit times. We apply this methodology to the Kepler-138 planetary system. The derived planetary bulk densities are a factor of 2 more precise than previous determinations, and we find a discrepancy in the stellar bulk density with respect t…
The measurement of an exoplanet's oblateness and obliquity provides insights into the planet's internal structure and formation history. Previous work using small differences in the shape of the transit light curve has been moderately successful, but was hampered by the small signal and extreme photometric precision required. The measurement of changes in transit depth, caused by the spin precession of an oblate planet, was proposed as an alternative method. Here, we present the first attempt to measure these changes. Using Kepler photometry, we examined the brown dwarf Kepler-39b and the warm…
Kepler-9 revisited 60% the mass with six times more data
