This paper presents measurements of the energy radiated by the lower solar atmosphere, at optical, UV, and EUV wavelengths, during an X-class solar flare (SOL2011-02-15T01:56) in response to an injection of energy assumed to be in the form of nonthermal electrons. Hard X-ray observations from RHESSI were used to track the evolution of the parameters of the nonthermal electron distribution to reveal the total power contained in flare accelerated electrons. By integrating over the duration of the impulsive phase, the total energy contained in the nonthermal electrons was found to be $>2\times10^{31}$ erg. The response of the lower solar atmosphere was measured in the free-bound EUV continua of H I (Lyman), He I, and He II, plus the emission lines of He II at 304Å and H I (Ly$α$) at 1216Å by SDO/EVE, the UV continua at 1600Å and 1700Å by SDO/AIA, and the WL continuum at 4504Å, 5550Å, and 6684Å, along with the Ca II H line at 3968Å using Hinode/SOT. The summed energy detected by these instruments amounted to $\sim3\times10^{30}$ erg; about 15% of the total nonthermal energy. The Ly$α$ line was found to dominate the measured radiative losses. Parameters of both the driving electron distribution and the resulting chromospheric response are presented in detail to encourage the numerical modelling of flare heating for this event, to determine the depth of the solar atmosphere at which these line and continuum processes originate, and the mechanism(s) responsible for their generation.
We analyzed high-cadence sit-and-stare observations acquired with the Hinode/EIS spectrometer and HXR measurements acquired with RHESSI during an M-class flare. During the flare impulsive phase, we observe no significant flows in the cooler Fe XIII line but strong upflows, up to 80-150 km/s, in the hotter Fe XVI line. The largest Doppler shifts observed in the Fe XVI line were co-temporal with the sharp intensity peak. The electron density obtained from a Fe XIII line pair ratio exhibited fast increase (within two minutes) from the pre-flare level of 5.01x10^(9) cm^(-3) to 3.16x10^(10) cm^(-3)…
We use state-of-the-art, three-dimensional non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the quiet solar atmosphere to carry out detailed tests of chromospheric magnetic field diagnostics from free-free radiation at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths (mm/submm). The vertical component of the magnetic field was deduced from the mm/submm brightness spectra and the degree of circular polarization synthesized at millimeter frequencies. We used the frequency bands observed by the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) as a convenient r…
Spicules have been observed on the sun for more than a century, typically in chromospheric lines such as H-alpha and Ca II H. Recent work has shown that so-called 'type II' spicules may have a role in providing mass to the corona and the solar wind. In chromospheric filtergrams these spicules are not seen to fall back down, and they are shorter-lived and more dynamic than the spicules that have been classically reported in ground-based observations. Observations of type II spicules with Hinode show fundamentally different properties from what was previously measured. In earlier work we showed …

Of a total of 177 cool G, K, and M giants and supergiants, we measured the Mg II h+k line emission of extended chromospheres in high-resolution (LWR) IUE spectra by using the IUE final data archive at STScI, and derived the respective stellar surface fluxes. They represent the chromospheric radiative energy losses presumably related to basal heating by the dissipation of acoustic waves, plus a highly variable contribution due to magnetic activity. Thanks to the large sample size, we find a very well defined lower limit, the basal chromospheric Mg II h+k line flux of cool giant chromospheres, a…
A spatio-temporal analysis of IRIS spectra of MgII, CII, and SiIV ions allows us to study the dynamics and the stratification of the flare atmosphere along the line of sight during the magnetic reconnection phase at the jet base. Strong asymmetric MgII and CII line profiles with extended blue wings observed at the reconnection site are interpreted by the presence of two chromospheric temperature clouds: one explosive cloud with blueshifts at 290 km/s and one cloud with smaller Doppler shift (around 36 km/s). Simultaneously at the same location a mini flare was observed with strong emission in …
The T Tauri stars with active accretion disks show veiled photospheric spectra. This is supposedly due to non-photospheric continuum radiated by hot spots beneath the accretion shocks at stellar surface and/or chromospheric emission lines radiated by the post-shocked gas. The amount of veiling is often considered as a measure of the mass-accretion rate. We analysed high-resolution photospheric spectra of accreting T Tauri stars LkHa 321, V1331 Cyg, and AS 353 A with the aim of clarifying the nature of the line-dependent veiling. Each of these objects shows a highly veiled, strong emission line…
We study the dynamics and evolution of a C2.3 two-ribbon flare, developed on 2002 August 11, during the impulsive and the long gradual phase. To this end we obtained multiwavelength observations using the CDS spectrometer aboard SOHO, facilities at the NSO/Sacramento Peak, and the TRACE and RHESSI spacecrafts. CDS spectroheliograms in the Fe XIX, Fe XVI, O V and He I lines allows us to determine the velocity field at different heights/temperatures during the flare and to compare them with the chromospheric velocity fields deduced from H alpha image differences. TRACE images in the 17.1 nm band…
Context: Flare kernels brighten simultaneously in all SDO/AIA channels making it difficult to determine their temperature structure. IRIS is able to spectrally resolve Fe xxi emission from cold chromospheric brightenings, so can be used to infer the amount of Fe xxi emission in 131 channel. Aims: We use observations of two small solar flares seen by IRIS and SDO to compare the EMs deduced from the IRIS Fe xxi line and the AIA 131 channel to determine the fraction of Fe xxi emission in flare kernels in the 131 channel of AIA. Methods: Cotemporal and cospatial pseudo-raster AIA images are compar…
We report on observations of the active K2 dwarf $ε$ Eridani based on contemporaneous SPIRou, NARVAL, and TESS data obtained over two months in late 2018, when the activity of the star was reported to be in a non-cyclic phase. We first recover the fundamental parameters of the target from both visible and nIR spectral fitting. The large-scale magnetic field is investigated from polarimetric data. From unpolarized spectra, we estimate the total magnetic flux through Zeeman broadening of magnetically sensitive nIR lines and the chromospheric emission using the CaII H & K lines. The TESS photomet…
Stellar flares are characterized by sudden enhancement of electromagnetic radiation in stellar atmospheres. So far much of our understanding of stellar flares comes from photometric observations, from which plasma motions in flare regions could not be detected. From the spectroscopic data of LAMOST DR7, we have found one stellar flare that is characterized by an impulsive increase followed by a gradual decrease in the H$α$ line intensity on an M4-type star, and the total energy radiated through H$α$ is estimated to be on the order of $10^{33}$ erg. The H$α$ line appears to have a Voigt profile…
Optical and near-UV continuum emissions in flares contribute substantially to flare energy budget. Two mechanisms play an important role for continuum emission in flares: hydrogen recombination after sudden ionization at chromospheric layers and transportation of the energy radiatively from the chromosphere to lower layers in the atmosphere, the so called back-warming. The aim of the paper is to disentangle between these two mechanisms for the excess of Balmer continuum observed in a flare. Methods. We combine the observations of Balmer continuum obtained with IRIS (spectra and SJIs 2832 A) an…
The relationship between vortex flows at different spatial scales and their contribution to the energy balance in the chromosphere is not yet fully understood. We perform three-dimensional (3D) radiation-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of a unipolar solar plage region at a spatial resolution of 10 km using the MURaM code. We use the swirling-strength criterion that mainly detects the smallest vortices present in the simulation data. We additionally degrade our simulation data to smooth-out the smaller vortices, so that also the vortices at larger spatial scales can be detected. Vortex fl…
We analyze here variations of the position and the vertical extent of the energy deposition layer (EDL) inthe C1.6 GOES-class solar flare observed at 10:20 UT on 2012 September 10. The variations of the EDL arecontrasted with the variations of the spectra and emission intensities recorded in the H-alpha line with the very high time resolution using the MSDP spectrograph at Bialkow Observatory. The flare radiated hard X-rays (HXR) detectable up to a energy of 70 keV. A numerical model of the flare used in the analysis assumes that the non-thermal electrons (NTEs) carried the external energy to …
X-rays are a valuable diagnostic tool for the study of high energy accelerated electrons. Bremsstrahlung X-rays produced by, and directly related to, high energy electrons accelerated during a flare, provide a powerful diagnostic tool for determining both the properties of the accelerated electron distribution, and of the flaring coronal and chromospheric plasmas. This thesis is specifically concerned with the study of spatial, spectral and polarization properties of solar flare X-ray sources via both modelling and X-ray observations using the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHE…
Solar flares observed in the 200-400 GHz radio domain may exhibit a slowly varying and time-extended component which follows a short (few minutes) impulsive phase and which lasts for a few tens of minutes to more than one hour. The few examples discussed in the literature indicate that such long-lasting submillimeter emission is most likely thermal bremsstrahlung. We present a detailed analysis of the time-extended phase of the 2003 October 27 (M6.7) flare, combining 1-345 GHz total-flux radio measurements with X-ray, EUV, and Hα observations. We find that the time-extended radio emission is, …
Solar observations in the infrared domain can bring important clues on the response of the low solar atmosphere to primary energy released during flares. At present the infrared continuum has been detected at 30 THz (10 $μ$m) in only a few flares. In this work we present a detailed multi-frequency analysis of SOL2012-03-13, including observations at radio millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths, in hard X-rays (HXR), gamma-rays (GR), H-alpha, and white-light. HXR/GR spectral analysis shows that the event is a GR line flare and allows estimating the numbers of and energy contents in electrons…
The impulsive phase of solar flares is a time of rapid energy deposition and heating in the lower solar atmosphere, leading to changes in the temperature and density structure of the region. We use an O V density diagnostic formed of the 192 to 248 line ratio, provided by Hinode EIS, to determine the density of flare footpoint plasma, at O V formation temperatures of 250,000 K, giving a constraint on the properties of the heated transition region. Hinode EIS rasters from 2 small flare events in December 2007 were used. Raster images were co-aligned to identify and establish the footpoint pixel…
Classic solar models put the Chromosphere-Corona Transition Region (CCTR} at $\sim2$Mm above the $τ_{5000} = 1$ level, whereas rMHD models place it in a wider range of heights. Observational verification is scarce. We review and discuss recent results from various instruments and spectral domains. In SDO and TRACE images spicules appear in emission in the 1600, 1700 and 304 A bands and in absorption in the EUV bands; the latter is due to photo-ionization of H and He I. At the shortest available AIA wavelength and taking into account that the photospheric limb is $\sim0.34$Mm above the $τ_{5000…
During its commissioning phase in 2020, the Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) on board the Solar Orbiter spacecraft observed 69 microflares. The two most significant events from this set (of GOES class B2 and B6) were observed on-disk from the spacecraft as well as from Earth and analysed in terms of the spatial, temporal, and spectral characteristics. We complement the observations from the STIX instrument with EUV imagery from SDO/AIA and GOES soft X-ray data by adding imaging and plasma diagnostics over different temperature ranges for a detailed microflare case study that is…
