Starting from the ACV approach to transplanckian scattering, we present a development of the reduced-action model in which the (improved) eikonal representation is able to describe particles' motion at large scattering angle and, furthermore, UV-safe (regular) rescattering solutions are found and incorporated in the metric. The resulting particles' shock-waves undergo calculable trajectory shifts and time delays during the scattering process --- which turns out to be consistently described by both action and metric, up to relative order $R^2/b^2$ in the gravitational radius over impact parameter expansion. Some suggestions about the role and the (re)scattering properties of irregular solutions --- not fully investigated here --- are also presented.
We discuss the de Sitter swampland and trans-Planckian censorship conjectures (TCC) from the entropy bound with quantum corrections, namely quantum version of Bousso bound and energy conditions. We include the typical contributions from the entanglement entropy in quasi-de Sitter spacetime. The TCC is not much corrected, whereas the bounds on de Sitter swampland conjecture from energy conditions can be relaxed due to quantum corrections.
In this paper we use our recently generalized black hole entropy formula to propose a quantum version of the Friedmann equations. In particular, starting from the differential version of the first law of thermodynamics, we are able to find planckian (non commutative) corrections to the Friedmann flat equations. The so modified equations are formally similar to the ones present in Gauss-Bonnet gravity, but in the ordinary 3+1 dimensions. As a consequence of these corrections, by considering negative fluctuations in the internal energy that are allowed by quantum field theory, our equations impl…
We reanalyze the question of black hole creation in high energy scattering via shockwave collisions. We find that string corrections tend to increase the scattering cross-section. We analyze corrections in a more physical setting, of Randall-Sundrum type and of higher dimensionality. We also analyze the scattering inside AdS backgrounds.
In the present paper we discuss how trans-Planckian physics affects inflationary vacuum fluctuations and primordial density perturbations. The trans-Planckian problem during inflation has been widely discussed in literature, but it is still under debate. We reconsider this problem by using the two-point correlation function of the non-minimally coupled scalar fields and constructing the effective potential with the adiabatic (WKB) regularization or approximation. First, we clearly show that the cut-off divergence of the quantum fluctuations does not drastically change during inflation under re…
Recent Planck results motivated us to use non-Bunch-Davies vacuum. In this paper, we use the excited-de Sitter mode as non-linear initial states during inflation to calculate the corrected spectra of the initial fluctuations of the scalar field. First, we consider the field in de Sitter space-time as background field and for the non-Bunch-Davies mode, we use the perturbation theory to the second order approximation. Also, unlike conventional renormalization method, we offer de Sitter space-time as the background instead Minkowski space-time. This approach preserve the symmetry of curved space-…
Future detectors could be used as a gravitational microscope to probe the horizon structure of merging black holes with gravitational waves. But can this microscope probe the quantum regime? We study this interesting question and find that (i) the error in the distance resolution is exponentially sensitive to errors in the Love number, and (ii) the uncertainty principle of quantum gravity forces a fundamental resolution limit. Thus, although the gravitational microscope can distinguish between black holes and other exotic objects, it is resolution limited well above the Planckian scale.
Models of inflation with super-Planckian excursion seem well in agreement with the recent observations of B- mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation by the BICEP2 data. In this note, we highlight the challenges faced by such models from ultraviolet (UV) completion. In particular, we will discus radiative corrections to the inflaton Lagrangian and to the gravitational sector. We will emphasize why we would require an UV complete theory of gravity to tackle some of the issues for the super-Planckian excursion. In particular, we will highlight how higher derivative te…
Several quantum-gravity models of compact objects predict microscopic or even Planckian corrections at the horizon scale. We explore the possibility of measuring two model-independent, smoking-gun effects of these corrections in the gravitational waveform of a compact binary, namely the absence of tidal heating and the presence of tidal deformability. For events detectable by the future space-based interferometer LISA, we show that the effect of tidal heating dominates and allows one to constrain putative corrections down to the Planck scale. The measurement of the tidal Love numbers with LISA…
Asymptotic behavior of the scattering amplitude for two scalar particles by scalar, vector and tensor exchanges at high energy and fixed momentum transfers is reconsidered in quantum field theory. In the framework of the quasi-potential approach and the modified perturbation theory a systematic scheme of finding the leading eikonal scattering amplitudes and its corrections are developed and constructed. The connection between the solutions obtained by quasi-potential and functional approaches is also discussed. The first correction to leading eikonal amplitude is found.
Due to the tremendous red-shift that occurs during the inflationary epoch in the early universe, it has been realized that trans-Planckian physics may manifest itself at energies much lower than the Planck energy. The presence of a fundamental scale suggests that local Lorentz invariance may be violated at sufficiently high energies. Motivated by this possibility, recently, different models that violate Lorentz invariance locally have been used to evaluate the trans-Planckian corrections to the inflationary density perturbation spectrum. However, certain astrophysical observations seem to indi…
We study a particular nonlinear dispersion relation $ω_p(k_p)$ -- a series expansion in the physical wavenumber $k_p$ -- for modeling first-order corrections in the equation of motion of a test scalar field in a de Sitter spacetime from trans-Planckian physics in cosmology. Using both a numerical approach and a semianalytical one, we show that the WKB approximation previously adopted in the literature should be used with caution, since it holds only when the comoving wavenumber $k\gg aH$. We determine the amplitude and behavior of the corrections on the power spectrum for this test field. Furt…
Starting from the swampland distance conjecture, and using the species bound for a large number of weakly-coupled particles, we give a derivation of the recently proposed trans-Planckian censorship conjecture. Our argument demonstrates how a quantum gravity principle requires that trans-Planckian quantum fluctuations should never cross the Hubble horizon. We also comment on how logarithmic corrections to the de-Sitter conjecture arise naturally from such an approach when one relaxes the requirement of traversing parametrically large distances on field space.
Since trans-Planckian considerations can be associated with the re-definition of the initial vacuum, we investigate further the influence of trans-Planckian physics on the spectra produced by the initial quasi-de Sitter (dS) state during inflation. We use the asymptotic-dS mode to study the trans-Planckian correction of the power spectrum to the quasi-dS inflation. The obtained spectra consist of higher order corrections associated with the type of geometry and harmonic terms sensitive to the fluctuations of space-time (or gravitational waves) during inflation. As an important result, the ampl…
We explore the possibility that, in a quantum field theory with Planck scale cutoff Lambda=Mp, observable quantities for low-energy processes respect the Lorentz symmetry. In particular, we compute the one-loop radiative correction Pi to the self-energy of a scalar field with lambda phi^4 interaction, using a modified (non-invariant) propagator which vanishes in the trans-Planckian regime, as expected in the "classicalization" scenario. We then show that, by imposing the result does not depend on Lambda (in the limit Lambda to Mp), an explicit (albeit not unique) expression for Pi can be deriv…
We propose a novel nonsingular black-hole spacetime representing a strong deformation of the Schwarzschild solution with mass $M$ by an additional hair $\ell$, which may be hierarchically larger than the Planck scale. Our black-hole model presents a de Sitter core and $\mathcal{O}(\ell^2/r^2)$ slow-decaying corrections to the Schwarzschild solution. Our black-hole solutions are thermodynamically preferred when $0.2 \lesssim \ell/GM \lesssim \, 0.3$ and are characterized by strong deviations in the orbits of test particles from the Schwarzschild case. In particular, we find corrections to the p…
We reconsider trans-Planckian corrections to inflationary spectra by taking into account a physical effect which has been overlooked and which could have important consequences. We assume that the short length scale characterizing the new physics is endowed with a finite width, the origin of which could be found in quantum gravity. As a result, the leading corrections responsible for superimposed osillations in the CMB temperature anisotropies are generically damped by the blurring of the UV scale. To determine the observational ramifications of this damping, we compare it to that which effect…
Slow-roll inflation requires the inflaton field to have an exceptionally flat potential, which combined with measurements of the scale of inflation demands some degree of fine-tuning. Alternatively, the flatness of the potential could be due to the inflaton's origin as a pseudo-Goldstone boson, as in Natural Inflation. Alas, consistency with Planck data places the original proposal of Natural Inflation in a tight spot, as it requires a trans-Planckian excursion of the inflaton. Although one can still tune the renormalizable potential to sub-Planckian values, higher order corrections from quant…
In this work, we consider the possibility that wormhole geometries are sustained by their own quantum fluctuations, in the context of modified dispersion relations. More specifically, the energy density of the graviton one-loop contribution to a classical energy in a wormhole background is considered as a self-consistent source for wormholes. In this semi-classical context, we consider specific choices for the Rainbow's functions and find solutions for wormhole geometries in the cis-planckian and trans-planckian regimes. In the former regime, the wormhole spacetimes are not asymptotically flat…
Basing on the results obtained in a our previous study on Gravity's Rainbow, we determine the quantum corrections to the space-time metric for the Schwarzschild and the de Sitter background, respectively. We analyze how quantum fluctuations alter these metrics inducing modifications on the propagation of test particles. Significantly enough we find that quantum corrections can become relevant not only for particles approaching the Planck energy but, due to the one loop contribution, even for low-energy particles as far as Planckian length scales are considered. We briefly compare our results w…
Transport in strongly-disordered, metallic systems is governed by diffusive processes. Based on quantum mechanics, it has been conjectured that these diffusivities obey a lower bound $D/v^2\gtrsim \hbar/k_B T$, the saturation of which provides a mechanism for the T-linear resistivity of bad metals. This bound features a characteristic velocity $v$, which was later argued to be the butterfly velocity $v_B$, based on holographic models of transport. This establishes a link between incoherent metallic transport, quantum chaos and Planckian timescales. Here we study higher derivative corrections t…
It is well known that radiative corrections evaluated in nontrivial backgrounds lead to effective dispersion relations which are not Lorentz invariant. Since gravitational interactions increase with energy, gravity-induced radiative corrections could be relevant for the trans-Planckian problem. As a first step to explore this possibility, we compute the one-loop radiative corrections to the self-energy of a scalar particle propagating in a thermal bath of gravitons in Minkowski spacetime. We obtain terms which originate from the thermal bath and which indeed break the Lorentz invariance that p…
We investigate the effect of non-linear dispersion relations on the bispectrum. In particular, we study the case were the modified relations do not violate the WKB condition at early times, focusing on a particular example which is exactly solvable: the Jacobson-Corley dispersion relation with quartic correction with positive coefficient to the squared linear relation. We find that the corrections to the standard result for the bispectrum are suppressed by a factor $\frac{H^2}{p_c^2}$ where $p_c$ is the scale where the modification to the dispersion relation becomes relevant. The modification …
