We explore the structure and kinematics of a dispersed filament of galaxies residing between the Local Void and the Virgo cluster. For such purpose, we consider a sample of 361 galaxies with radial velocities $V_{LG} < 2000$ km/s inside the sky area of RA = [13.0 ... 18.0]$^h$ and Dec. = [$-$5 ... $+$10]$^\circ$. At present, 161 of them have individual distance estimates. The galaxy distribution on peculiar velocities along the strip exhibits the known Virgo-centric infall at RA < 14$^h$ and some signs of outflow from the Local Void at RA > 17$^h$. Majority of the Bootes strip galaxies (56%) belong to 13 groups and 11 pairs, with the most prominent group around NGC5846. The Bootes strip groups reside within [17$-$27]Mpc, being all farther from us than the Virgo cluster. The Bootes filament contains the total stellar mass of $2.7\times10^{12} M_\odot$ and the total virial mass of $9.07\times10^{13} M_\odot$, having the average density of dark matter to be $Ω_m = 0.09$, i.e. a factor three lower than the global cosmic average.
Aim: We establish the mean metallicity from high-resolution spectroscopy for the recently found dwarf spheroidal galaxy Bootes I and test whether it is a common feature for ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies to show signs of inhomogeneous chemical evolution (e.g. as found in the Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy). Methods: We analyse high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise spectra for seven red giant stars in the Bootes I dSph galaxy using standard abundance analysis techniques. In particular, we assume local thermodynamic equilibrium and employ spherical model atmospheres and codes that t…
We report the results of a spectroscopic study of the Bootes III (BooIII) stellar overdensity carried out with the Hectospec multifiber spectrograph on the MMT telescope. Radial velocities have been measured for 193 BooIII candidate stars selected to have magnitudes and colors consistent with its upper main sequence and lower red giant branch, as well as a number of horizontal branch candidates. From 20 identified candidate BooIII members, we measure a systemic velocity of V_sun=197.5+-3.8 km/s and a velocity dispersion of sigma_o=14.0+-3.2 km/s. We use the somewhat large velocity dispersion a…
Bootes filament of galaxies is a dispersed chain of groups residing on sky between the Local Void and the Virgo cluster. We consider a sample of 361 galaxies inside the sky area of $RA = 13.0^h ... 18.5^h$ and $Dec = -5^\circ ... +10^\circ$ with radial velocities $V_{LG} < 2000$ km/s to clarify its structure and kinematics. In this region, 161 galaxies have individual distance estimates. We use these data to draw the Hubble relation for galaxy groups, pairs as well as the field galaxies, and to examine the galaxy distribution on peculiar velocities. Our analysis exposes the known Virgo-centric…
We present the X-ray and optical properties of the galaxy groups selected in the Chandra X-Boötes survey. Our final sample comprises 32 systems at \textbf{$z<1.75$}, with 14 below $z = 0.35$. For these 14 systems we estimate velocity dispersions ($σ_{gr}$) and perform a virial analysis to obtain the radii ($R_{200}$ and $R_{500}$) and total masses ($M_{200}$ and $M_{500}$) for groups with at least five galaxy members. We use the Chandra X-ray observations to derive the X-ray luminosity ($L_X$). We examine the performance of the group properties $σ_{gr}$, $L_{opt}$ and $L_X$, as proxies for the…
We present one of the most ultraviolet (UV) luminous Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) (J1432+3358) at z=2.78, discovered in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS) Bootes field. The R-band magnitude of J1432+3358 is 22.29 AB, more than two magnitudes brighter than typical L* LBGs at this redshift. The deep z-band image reveals two components of J1432+3358 separated by 1.0" with flux ratio of 3:1. The high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) rest-frame UV spectrum shows Lya emission line and interstellar medium absorption lines. The absence of NV and CIV emission lines, the non-detection in X-ray and radio …
We present a deep LBT/LBC U-band imaging survey (9 deg2) covering the NOAO Bootes field. A total of 14,485 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z~3 are selected, which are used to measure the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF). The large sample size and survey area reduce the LF uncertainties due to Poisson statistics and cosmic variance by >3 compared to previous studies. At the bright end, the LF shows excess power compared to the best-fit Schechter function, which can be attributed to the contribution of $z\sim3$ quasars. We compute the rest-frame near-infrared LF and stellar mass function (S…
We present results of the study of peculiar motions of 57 clusters and groups of galaxies in the regions of the Corona Borealis (CrB), Bootes (Boo), Z5029/A1424, A1190, A1750/A1809 superclusters of galaxies and 20 galaxy clusters located beyond massive structures ($0.05<z<0.10$). Using the SDSS (Data Release 8) data, a sample of early-type galaxies was compiled in the systems under study, their fundamental planes were built, and relative distances and peculiar velocities were determined. Within the galaxy superclusters, significant peculiar motions along the line of sight are observed with rms…
In this paper, the availability of multi-wavelength optical/infrared information of FIRST (Faint Images of the Radio Sky at 20 cm) radio sources counterparts over ~9.2 deg^{2} in Bootes field and ~2.4 deg^{2} in Cetus field is exploited to infer the physical properties of the faint radio population. The radio sources optically identified have been divided into resolved galaxies and stellar-like objects finding that the faint radio population is mainly composed of early-type galaxies with very red colour (Bw-R~4.6). A total number of 57 counterparts of FIRST radio sources have extremely red col…
Observationally, the quenching of star-forming galaxies appears to depend both on their mass and environment. The exact cause of the environmental dependence is still poorly understood, yet semi-analytic models (SAMs) of galaxy formation need to parameterise it to reproduce observations of galaxy properties. In this work, we use hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the quenching of disk galaxies through ram-pressure stripping (RPS) as they fall into galaxy clusters with the goal of characterising the importance of this effect for the reddening of disk galaxies. Our set-up employs a live m…
Ram-pressure stripping by the gaseous intra-cluster medium has been proposed as the dominant physical mechanism driving the rapid evolution of galaxies in dense environments. Detailed studies of this process have, however, largely been limited to relatively modest examples affecting only the outermost gas layers of galaxies in nearby and/or low-mass galaxy clusters. We here present results from our search for extreme cases of gas-galaxy interactions in much more massive, X-ray selected clusters at $z>0.3$. Using Hubble Space Telescope snapshots in the F606W and F814W passbands, we have discove…
Recent observations revealed a mysterious ultra diffuse galaxy, NGC1052-DF2, in the group of a large elliptical galaxy, NGC1052. Compared to expectations from abundance matching models, the dark matter mass contained in NGC1052-DF2 is smaller by a factor of $\sim 400$. We utilize controlled $N$-body simulations of the tidal interaction between NGC1052 and a smaller satellite galaxy, that we suppose as the progenitor of NGC1052-DF2, to test if tidal stripping can explain dark-matter deficiency at such levels. We find that when assuming a tightly bound and quite radial orbit and cored density st…
We use an analytical approach to study ram pressure stripping with simple models for discs and halo gas distribution to study the phenomena in cluster, group and galaxy halos. We also study variations with galaxy properties and redshift. In each case we model the worst case scenario (i.e., maximum effect due to ram pressure). We show that there is little variation in the worst case scenario with redshift. We find that gas discs in galaxies with a higher spin parameter get stripped sooner than galaxies with a smaller spin parameter. Galaxies in cluster halos get stripped of gas more effciently …
Satellite galaxies in galaxy clusters represent a significant fraction of the global galaxy population. Because of the unusual dense environment of clusters, their evolution is driven by different mechanisms than the ones affecting field or central galaxies. Understanding the different interactions they are subject to, and how they are influenced by them, is therefore an important step towards explaining the global picture of galaxy evolution. In this paper, we use the publicly-available high resolution hydrodynamical simulation Illustris-1 to study satellite galaxies in the three most massive…
Elliptical galaxies moving through the intra-cluster medium (ICM) are progressively stripped of their gaseous atmospheres. X-ray observations reveal the structure of galactic tails, wakes, and the interface between the galactic gas and the ICM. This fine-structure depends on dynamic conditions (galaxy potential, initial gas contents, orbit in the host cluster), orbital stage (early infall, pre-/post-pericenter passage), as well as on the still ill-constrained ICM plasma properties (thermal conductivity, viscosity, magnetic field structure). Paper I describes flow patterns and stages of invisci…
The ambient hot intra-halo gas in clusters of galaxies is constantly fed and stirred by in-falling galaxies, a process that can be studied in detail with cosmological hydro- dynamical simulations. However, different numerical methods yield discrepant predic- tions for crucial hydrodynamical processes, leading for example to different entropy profiles in clusters of galaxies. In particular, the widely used Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) scheme is suspected to strongly damp fluid instabili- ties and turbulence, which are both crucial to establish the thermodynamic structure of …
We present the galaxy optical luminosity function for the redshift range 0.05<z<0.75 from the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey (AGES), a spectroscopic survey of 7.6 sq. deg. in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. Our statistical sample is comprised of 12,473 galaxies with known redshifts down to I=20.4 (AB). Our results at low redshift are consistent with those from SDSS; at higher redshift, we find strong evidence for evolution in the luminosity function, including differential evolution between blue and red galaxies. We find that the luminosity density evolves as (1+z)^(0.54+…
We examine two members of the NGC 4065 group of galaxies: a bent-double (a.k.a. wide angle tail) radio source and an HI deficient spiral galaxy. Models of the X-ray emitting intragroup gas and the bent-double radio source, NGC 4061, are used to probe the density of intergalactic gas in this group. HI observations reveal an asymmetric, truncated distribution of neutral gas in spiral galaxy, UGC 07049, and the accompanying radio continuum emission reveals strong star formation. We examine the effectiveness of ram pressure stripping as a gas removal mechanism and find that it alone cannot account…
By creating and analyzing the two dimensional gas temperature and abundance maps of the RGH 80 compact galaxy group with the high-quality Chandra data, we detect a high-abundance ($\simeq 0.7$ $Z_\odot$) arc, where the metal abundance is significantly higher than the surrounding regions by $\simeq 0.3$ Z_\odot$. This structure shows tight spatial correlations with the member galaxy PGC 046529, as well as with the arm-like feature identified on the X-ray image in the previous work of Randall et al. (2009). Since no apparent signature of AGN activity is found associated with PGC 046529 in multi-…
While galaxies move through the intracluster medium of their host cluster, they experience a ram pressure which removes at least a significant part of their interstellar medium. This ram pressure stripping appears to be especially important for spiral galaxies: this scenario is a good candidate to explain the differences observed between cluster spirals in the nearby universe and their field counterparts. Thus, ram pressure stripping of disk galaxies in clusters has been studied intensively during the last decade. I review advances made in this area, concentrating on theoretical work, but cont…
We select satellite galaxies from the galaxy group catalog constructed with the SDSS spectroscopic galaxies and measure the tangential shear around these galaxies with source catalog extracted from CFHT/MegaCam Stripe-82 Survey to constrain the mass of subhalos associated with them. The lensing signal is measured around satellites in groups with masses in the range [10^{13}, 5x10^{14}]h^{-1}M_{sun}, and is found to agree well with theoretical expectation. Fitting the data with a truncated NFW profile, we obtain an average subhalo mass of log M_{sub}= 11.68 \pm 0.67 for satellites whose project…
The progenitors of stripped-envelope supernovae (SNe Ibc) remain to be conclsuively identified, but correlations between SN rates and host-galaxy properties can constrain progenitor models. Here, we present one result from a re-analysis of the rates from the Lick Observatory Supernova Search. Galaxies with stellar masses less than $\sim 10^{10}~{\rm M_\odot}$ are less efficient at producing SNe Ibc than more massive galaxies. Any progenitor scenario must seek to explain this new observation.
We present IRAM 30m sensitive upper limits on CO emission in the ram pressure stripped dwarf Virgo galaxy IC3418 and in a few positions covering HII regions in its prominent 17 kpc UV/Ha gas-stripped tail. In the central few arcseconds of the galaxy, we report a possible marginal detection of about 1x10^6 M_sun of molecular gas (assuming a Galactic CO-to-H_2 conversion factor) that could correspond to a surviving nuclear gas reservoir. We estimate that there is less molecular gas in the main body of IC3418, by at least a factor of 20, than would be expected from the pre-quenching UV-based star…
We present optical imaging and spectroscopy and HI imaging of the Virgo Cluster galaxy IC 3418, which is likely a "smoking gun" example of the transformation of a dwarf irregular into a dwarf elliptical galaxy by ram pressure stripping. IC 3418 has a spectacular 17 kpc length UV-bright tail comprised of knots, head-tail, and linear stellar features. The only H-alpha emission arises from a few HII regions in the tail, the brightest of which are at the heads of head-tail UV sources whose tails point toward the galaxy ("fireballs"). Several of the elongated tail sources have H-alpha peaks outward…
With the aim of finding evidence of tidal stripping of globular clusters (GCs) we analysed a sample of 13 elliptical galaxies taken from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (VCS). These galaxies belong to the main concentration of the Virgo cluster (VC) and present absolute magnitudes $-18.5<M_z<-22.5$. We used the public GC catalog of Jordán et al. (2008) and separated the GC population into metal poor (blue) and metal rich (red) according to their integrated colors. The galaxy properties were taken from \citet{Peng:2008}. We found that: 1) The specific frequencies ($S_N$) of total and blue GC popul…
