This article expands for spinor fields the recently developed Dynamical Bridge formalism which relates a linear dynamics in a curved space to a nonlinear dynamics in Minkowski space. Astonishingly, this leads to a new geometrical mechanism to generate a chiral symmetry breaking without mass, providing an alternative explanation for the undetected right-handed neutrinos. We consider a spinor field obeying the Dirac equation in an effective curved space constructed by its own currents. This way, both chiralities of the spinor field satisfy the same dynamics in the curved space. Subsequently, the dynamical equation is re-expressed in terms of the flat Minkowski space and then each chiral component behaves differently. The left-handed part of the spinor field satisfies the Dirac equation while the right-handed part is trapped by a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type potential.
The problem of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) in multidimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED) is considered. It is shown that for six-dimensional QED the phenomenon of DSCB exists in ladder model for any coupling.
In this paper, we will consider the chiral symmetry breaking in the holographic model constructed from the intersecting brane configuration, and investigate the Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with this symmetry breaking.
We investigate the effect of a constant external non-Abelian field on chiral symmetry breaking in a (2+1)-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and in 3D QCD by solving the gap equation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation, and also by RG analysis. In the (2+1)-dimensional NJL model chiral symmetry breaking occurs for any weak coupling constant but in 3D QCD catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking does not occur.
We propose a new chiral model of metastable supersymmetry breaking in the conformal window via chiral/nonchiral Seiberg duality, which is focused on Spin(7)/SU(N_f-4) duality in this letter. Following the approach of Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih model, a small mass perturbation in the nonchiral theory leads to supersymmetry breaking by rank condition in the chiral dual description.
In this paper we study the properties of media with chiral imbalance parameterized by chiral chemical potential. It is shown that depending on the strength of interaction between constituents in the media the chiral chemical potential either creates or enhances dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. Thus the chiral chemical potential plays a role of the catalyst of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. Physically this effect results from the appearance of the Fermi surface and additional fermion states on this surface which take part in dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. An interesting conclusion …
The generalization of the Gross-Neveu model for noncommutative 3+1 space-time has been analyzed. We find indications that the chiral symmetry breaking occurs for an inhomogeneous background as in the LOFF phase in condensed matter.
Using the nonperturbative Schwinger-Dyson equation, we show that chiral symmetry in weak-coupling massless QED is dynamically broken by a constant but arbitrarily strong external magnetic field.
We show that in supersymmetric pure Yang Mills theories with arbitrary simple gauge group, the spontaneous breaking of chiral fermionic and bosonic charge by the associated gaugino and gauge boson condensates implies the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry by the condensate of the underlying Lagrangian density. The explicit breaking of the restricted fermionic charge through the chiral anomaly is deferred to a secondary stage in the elimination of infrared singularities or long range forces.
We study chiral symmetry breaking in QED when a uniform external magnetic field is present. We calculate higher order corrections to the dynamically generated fermion mass and find them to be small. In so doing we correct an error in the literature regarding the matrix structure of the fermion self-energy.
We identify two distinct, complementary gauge field configurations for QCD with SU(2) gauge group, one (instanton-like configurations) having to do with chiral symmetry breaking but not with confinement, the other (regularized Wu-Yang monopoles) very likely responsible for confinement but unrelated to chiral symmetry breaking. Our argument is based on a semiclassical analysis of fermion zero modes in these backgrounds, made by use of a gauge field decomposition recently introduced by Faddeev and Niemi. Our result suggests that the two principal dynamical phenomena in QCD, confinement and chira…
Dyonic classical solutions of Yang-Mills theory are considered and the complete set of fermionic zero modes of these solutions are studied. Representing the QCD vacuum as a gas of dyons, one obtains chiral symmetry breaking due to zero modes similarly to the case of instantonic vacuum.
We study chiral symmetry breaking in quenched QED$_4$, using a vertex Ansatz recently proposed by Curtis and Pennington. Bifurcation analysis is employed to establish the existence of a critical coupling and to estimate its value. The main results are in qualitative agreement with the ladder approximation, the numerical changes being minor.
The QCD non-perturbative property of Effective Locality whose essential meaning has been disclosed recently, is here questioned about the chiral symmetry breaking phenomenon, one of the two major issues of the non-perturbative phase of QCD. As a first attempt, quenching and the eikonal approximation are used so as to simplify calculations which are quite involved. Chiral symmetry breaking appears to be realised in close connection to the Effective Locality mass scale, $μ^2$ , as could be expected.
A new family of models of flavour chiral symmetry breaking is proposed. The models are based on the embedding of a stack of D7-branes and a stack of anti D7-branes in the conifold background. This family of gravity models is dual to a field theory with spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance and chiral flavour symmetry. We identify the corresponding Goldstone bosons and compute the spectra of massive scalar and vector mesons. The dual quiver gauge theory is also discussed. We further analyse a model where chiral symmetry is not broken.
The set of one dimensional lowest energy eigenspaces used to construct the overlap induces a two form on gauge orbit space which is the locally exact curl of Berry's connection. If anomalies do not cancel, examples of two dimensional closed sub-manifolds of orbit space are produced over which the integral of the above two form does not vanish. Based on these observations, a natural definition of covariant currents is obtained, a simple way to calculate chiral anomalies on the lattice is found, and indications for how to construct an ideal regularization of chiral gauge theories are seen to eme…
The partition function and the order parameter for the chiral symmetry breaking are computed for a family of 2-dimensional interacting theories containing the gauged Thirring model. In particular we derive non-perturbative expressions for the dependence of the chiral condensate on the temperature and the curvature. Both, high temperature and high curvature supress the condensate exponentially and we can associate an effective temperature to the curvature.
Based on the Hawking-Unruh thermalization theorem, we investigate the phenomenon of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and its restoration for a uniformly accelerated observer. We employ the Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model in Rindler coordinates, and calculate the effective potential and the gap equation. The critical coupling and the critical acceleration for symmetry restoration are obtained.
The Schwinger-Dyson equations in the ladder approximation for $2D$ induced gravity coupled to fermions on a flat background are obtained in conformal gauge. A numerical study of these equations shows the possiblity of chiral symmetry breaking in this theory.
We consider intersecting D-brane models which have two dimensional chiral fermions localized at the intersections. At weak coupling, the interactions of these fermions are described by generalized Gross-Neveu models. At strong coupling, these configurations are described by the dynamics of probe D-branes in a curved background spacetime. We study patterns of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in these models at weak and strong coupling, and also discuss relationships between these two descriptions.
This paper consists of an overview of the discussions on chiral symmetry breaking followed by a transcript of the discussions themselves. (Based on discussions at ``Theory of Hadrons and Light-Front QCD,'' Polana Zgorzelisko, Poland, August 1994.)
The effective potential in the model introduced by Buchbinder-Inagaki-Odintsov (BIO) which represents SUSY NJL model non-minimally coupled with the external gravitational field is found. The topology of the space is considered to be non-trivial. Chiral symmetry breaking under the action of external curvature and non-trivial topology is investigated.
The chiral symmetry breaking in the 4-dimensional QED with the chirally invariant four-fermion interaction is discussed by using a novel path integral expression in terms of the field-strength tensor. In the local potential approximation, we find that the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken for any nonzero gauge and four-fermion couplings on the tree level of an auxiliary field $σ$. The present approach allows us to easily include higher orders of the gauge coupling so that the effective potential up to the sixth order is obtained.
We show that the chiral symmetry breaking occurs in the vacuum of the massless Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and Thirring models without a Goldstone boson. The basic reason of non-existence of the massless boson is due to the fact that the new vacuum after the symmetry breaking acquires nonzero fermion mass which inevitably leads to massive bosons. The new vacuum has a finite condensate of $<\bar ψψ>$ with the chiral current conservation. Thus, it contradicts the Goldstone theorem, and we show that the proof of the Goldstone theorem cannot be justified any more for fermion field theory models with …
We study the embedding of D7 brane probes in five geometries that are deformations of AdS_5 x S^5. Each case corresponds to the inclusion of quark fields in a dual gauge theory where we are interested in investigating whether chiral symmetry breaking occurs. We use a supersymmetric geometry describing an N=2 theory on its moduli space and a dilaton driven non-supersymmetric flow to establish criteria for a chiral symmetry breaking embedding. We develop a simple spherical D7 embedding that tests the repulsion of the core of the geometry and signals dynamical symmetry breaking. We then use this …
We consider chiral symmetry breaking AdS / QCD models with cubic and quartic potentials in the scalar sector and a z dependent mass for scalars in the bulk. In these models it is possible to get good mesonic spectra using current quark masses.
In three-dimensional QED, which is analyzed in the 1/$N$ expansion, we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for a nontrivial solution of the Dyson-Schwinger equation to be chiral symmetry breaking solution. In the derivation, a normalization condition of the Goldstone bound state is used. It is showed that the existent analytical solutions satisfy this condition.
We analyze, in the framework of AdS/CFT correspondence, the gauge theory phase structure that are supposed to be dual to the recently found non-supersymmetric dilatonic deformations to AdS_5 X S^5 in type IIB string theory. Analyzing the probe D7-brane dynamics in the backgrounds of our interest, which corresponds to the fundamental N=2 hypermultiplet, we show that the chiral bi-fermion condensation responsible for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is not logically related to the phenomenon of confinement.
A few years ago the use of standard functional manipulations was demonstrated to imply an unexpected property satisfied by the fermionic Green's functions of QCD, and called effective locality. This feature of QCD is non-perturbative as it results from a full integration of the gluonic degrees of freedom. In this paper, at eikonal and quenching approximation at least, the relation of effective locality to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is examined.
The effects of an external field on the dynamics of chiral symmetry breaking are studied using quenched, ladder QED as our model gauge field theory. It is found that a uniform external magnetic field enables the chiral symmetry to be spontaneously broken at weak gauge couplings, in contrast with the situation when no external field is present. The broken chiral symmetry is restored at high temperatures as well as at high chemical potentials. The nature of the two chiral phase transitions is different: the transition at high temperatures is a continuous one whereas the phase transition at high …
The pattern of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) in confining background fields is analyzed. It is explicitly demonstrated how to get the inverse square root large proper time asymptotic of the operator product expansion which is needed for CSB.
By the use of an effective superpotential in supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics (SQCD) with N_f flavors and N_c colors of quarks for N_f>=N_c+2, the influence of soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breakings is examined to clarify dynamics of chiral symmetry breakings near the SUSY limit. In case that SQCD triggers spontaneous chiral symmetry breakings, it is possible to show that our superpotential dynamically favors the successive formation of condensates, leaving either SU(N_f-N_c) or SU(N_f-N_c+1) unbroken as a chiral nonabelian symmetry.
The spontaneous symmetry breaking of a local chiral symmetry to its diagonal vector symmetry naturally realizes a complete geometrical structure more general than that of Yang-Mills (YM) theory, rather similar to that of gravity. A good example is the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with respect to the Chiral Color model. Also, a new anomaly-free particle content for a Chiral Color model is introduced: the Chiral Color can be realized without introducing whole new generations of quarks and leptons, but by simply enlarging each generation with new exotic fermions.
In this talk I present recent results on Lorentz covariant correlation functions $\langle q(p_1)\overline{q}(p_2)\rangle$ on the cone $p^2=0$. In particular, chiral symmetry breaking terms are constructed which resemble fermionic 2--point functions of 2--D CFT up to a scalar factor.
We systematically study quantum effect on chiral and $U_A(1)$ symmetry breaking under external electromagnetic fields in the frame of equal-time Wigner function formalism. We derive the transport and constraint equations for the quark distribution functions and the chiral and pion condensates in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. By taking semi-classical expansion of the equations, chiral symmetry is broken at classical level, while $U_A(1)$ symmetry breaking happens only at quantum level. Beyond quasi-particle approximation, the quark off-shell effect leads to strong oscillation for the chiral and …
In this letter we uncover a new facet of chiral symmetry and the implications of its breaking in some theories. By generalizing the concept of chiral symmetry, tensor theories naturally arise. This novel approach adds to the known uses of tensor theories (quantum gravity, holography, entanglement, etc.) a possible link to QCD phenomena.
While chiral symmetry breaking in the QCD vacuum is attributed to nonzero chiral condensate, an alternative symmetry breaking pattern with no chiral condensate is also possible, as pointed out by Stern. This hypothetical phase was excluded in QCD at zero density long time ago, but nothing forbids it at finite baryon density. In this work, we study the $θ$ dependence of this unorthodox phase on the basis of chiral perturbation theory. Physical observables such as energy density, topological susceptibility, non-local chiral order parameter and meson masses are computed analytically in the epsilo…
Solutions of the superspace Schwinger-Dyson equations, describing mass generation and chiral symmetry breaking in supersymmetric gauge theory, need not be constrained to vanish by no-renormalization theorems, nor by special choices of gauge parameter. Thus symmetry breaking vacuum structures remain possible (as in non-supersymmetric gauge theory), inviting comparison with predictions of an alternative approach based on holomorphy and the Wilsonian effective action.
The catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking in the massless weakly coupled QED in a magnetic field at finite temperature is studied. The temperature of the symmetry restoration is estimated analytically as $T_c\simeq m_{dyn}$, where $m_{dyn}$ is the dynamical mass of a fermion at zero temperature.
Explicit chiral symmetry breaking is a natural feature of many QCD inspired models with multi-quark interactions. To carry out the 1/N expansion of these theories, one integrates over the quark fields. In the process of calculating the one-loop fermion determinant which is not chiral invariant due to quark masses, special care must be taken in order not to alter the original symmetry breaking pattern of the Lagrangian. We show how to do this consistently.
Considering a self-interaction only of mirror fermions in the context of a lattice-regularized fermion field theory, we show that the system undergoes spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and mirror-fermion masses are generated. However, it is explicitly shown that there are no Goldstone bosons appearing together with this spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomenon, since Lorentz invariance, one of very general prerequisites of the Goldstone theorem, is violated. The result and its possible application are briefly discussed.
We show how to incorporate chiral symmetry breaking in the soft-wall version of the AdS/QCD model by using a modified dilaton profile and a quartic term in the bulk scalar potential. This allows one to separate the dependence on spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking. Moreover our 5D model automatically incorporates linear trajectories and non chiral-symmetry restoration for highly excited radial states. We compare our resulting mass spectra in the scalar, vector and axial-vector sectors with the respective QCD resonances and find reasonable agreement using the known values for the …
We prove that the Wess-Zumino model breaks supersymmetry in the low-energy limit. The mechanism is identical to the breaking of chiral symmetry in quantum chromodynamics as the low-energy limit is a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and the gap equation has a solution. This happens at a critical coupling at lower momenta. Instanton liquid plays an essential role in the behavior of the theory in this limit.
I will review results obtained recently within the Hamilton approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge. The focus will be on finite-temperature Yang--Mills theory and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.
We demonstrate that $SO(N_{c})$ gauge theories with matter fields in the vector representation confine due to monopole condensation and break the $SU(N_{F})$ chiral symmetry to $SO(N_{F})$ via the quark bilinear. Our results are obtained by perturbing the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theory with anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking.
We briefly review the generalized Skyrmion model for the baryon recently suggested by us. It takes into account the tower of vector and axial mesons as well as the chiral symmetry breaking. The generalized Skyrmion model provides the qualitative explanation of the Ioffe's formula for the baryon mass.
It is shown that in vector-like gauge theories, such as QCD, and in the limit of a large number of colours Nc, the ordering pattern of narrow vector and axial-vector states at low energies is correlated with the size of the possible local order parameters of chiral symmetry breaking. This has implications on the underlying dynamics of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, and also on possible values of the parameter S for oblique electroweak corrections, the analogue of the QCD low energy constant L10.
Superconformal indices of 4d \N=1 SYM theories with SU(N) and SP(2N) gauge groups are investigated for N_f=N and N_f=N+1 flavors, respectively. These indices vanish for generic values of the flavor fugacities. However, for a singular submanifold of fugacities they behave like the Dirac delta functions and describe the chiral symmetry breaking phenomenon. Similar picture holds for partition functions of 3d supersymmetric field theories with the chiral symmetry breaking.
Using the nonperturbative Schwinger-Dyson equation, we show that chiral symmetry is dynamically broken in QED at weak couplings when an external magnetic field is present, and that chiral symmetry is restored at temperatures above $T_c \simeq απ^2/\sqrt{2 π|eH|}$, where $α$ is the fine structure constant and $H$ is the magnetic field strength.
The theory of the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking in QED is developed. An approximation for the Schwinger-Dyson equations describing reliably this phenomenon is established, i.e., it is shown that there exists a consistent truncation of those equations in this problem. The equations are solved both analytically and numerically, and the dynamical mass of fermions is determined.
I review recent progress achieved on the lattice in the quantitative comprehension of chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Emphasis is given to the recent precise computations of the spectral density of the Dirac operator in the continuum limit, and of the topological susceptibility.
The hypothesis that the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking is due to interactions of massless fermions in their lowest Landau level is examined in the context of chirally symmetric models with short ranged interactions. It is argued that, when the magnetic field is sufficiently large, even an infinitesimal attractive interaction in the appropriate channel will break chiral symmetry.
We discuss generalizations of Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih (ISS) vacua to chiral models. We study one example, of an s-confining theory, in detail. In the IR, this example reduces to two ISS-like sectors, and exhibits a supersymmetry-breaking vacuum with all pseudo-moduli stabilized at the origin, and with the R-symmetry unbroken. The IR theory is interesting from the point of view of R-symmetry breaking. This theory is an O'Raifeartaigh model with all charges zero or two, but the presence of a second R-charged pseudo-modulus with superpotential couplings to the messengers in principle allows for…
The order parameters of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, the dynamical mass of quarks and the chiral condensates, are evaluated by numerically solving the Non-Perturbative Renormalization Group (NPRG) equations. We employ an approximation scheme beyond ``the ladder'', that is, beyond the (improved) ladder Schwinger-Dyson equations. The chiral condensates are enhanced compared with the ladder ones, which is phenomenologically favorable. The gauge dependence of the order parameters is fairly reduced in this scheme.
An alternative pattern of the chiral symmetry breaking, suggested recently by Stern, is investigated. It could be self-consistent provided that the chiral $SU(N_f) \times SU(N_f)$ symmetry is broken spontaneously down to $SU(N_f) \times Z_{N_f}$ rather than to $SU(N_f)_V$. The discrete axial $Z_{N_f}$ then would play a custodial role preventing the quark bilinears from condensation. It is shown that this pattern of the chiral symmetry breaking is ruled out in QCD by exact inequalities. It is not ruled out, however, in other gauge theories with scalar quarks and/or Yukawa couplings.
We analyze patterns of dynamical symmetry breaking in strongly coupled chiral gauge theories with direct-product gauge groups $G$. If the gauge coupling for a factor group $G_i \subset G$ becomes sufficiently strong, it can produce bilinear fermion condensates that break the $G_i$ symmetry itself and/or break other gauge symmetries $G_j \subset G$. Our comparative study of a number of strongly coupled direct-product chiral gauge theories elucidates how the patterns of symmetry breaking depend on the structure of $G$ and on the relative sizes of the gauge couplings corresponding to factor group…
We analytically study the relation between quark confinement and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking in QCD. In terms of the Dirac eigenmodes, we derive some formulae for the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, and the string tension from the Wilson loop. We also investigate the Polyakov loop in terms of the eigenmodes of the Wilson, the clover and the domain wall fermion kernels, respectively. For the confinement quantities, the low-lying Dirac/fermion eigenmodes are found to give negligible contribution, while they are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. These relations indicate no direct …
We describe a (first, to the best of our knowledge) essentially soluble example of dynamical symmetry breaking phenomenon in a 3+1 dimensional gauge theory without fundamental scalar fields: QED in a constant magnetic field.
A recent result of Gusynin, Miransky and Shovkovy concerning chiral symmetry breaking by a constant external magnetic field in parity-invariant three-dimensional QED is generalised to the case of inhomogeneous fields by relating the phenomenon to the zero modes of the Dirac equation. Virtual photon radiative corrections and four-dimensional QED are briefly discussed.
