Image registration is a key component of various image processing operations which involve the analysis of different image data sets. Automatic image registration domains have witnessed the application of many intelligent methodologies over the past decade; however inability to properly model object shape as well as contextual information had limited the attainable accuracy. In this paper, we propose a framework for accurate feature shape modeling and adaptive resampling using advanced techniques such as Vector Machines, Cellular Neural Network (CNN), SIFT, coreset, and Cellular Automata. CNN has found to be effective in improving feature matching as well as resampling stages of registration and complexity of the approach has been considerably reduced using corset optimization The salient features of this work are cellular neural network approach based SIFT feature point optimisation, adaptive resampling and intelligent object modelling. Developed methodology has been compared with contemporary methods using different statistical measures. Investigations over various satellite images revealed that considerable success was achieved with the approach. System has dynamically used spectral and spatial information for representing contextual knowledge using CNN-prolog approach. Methodology also illustrated to be effective in providing intelligent interpretation and adaptive resampling.
This paper investigates the use of evolutionary optimisation techniques to register a template with a scene image. An error function is created to measure the correspondence of the template to the image. The problem presented here is to optimise the horizontal, vertical and scaling parameters that register the template with the scene. The Genetic Algorithm, Simulated Annealing and Particle Swarm Optimisations are compared to a Nelder-Mead Simplex optimisation with starting points chosen in a pre-processing stage. The paper investigates the precision and accuracy of each method and shows that a…
We present a 3-step registration pipeline for differently stained histological serial sections that consists of 1) a robust pre-alignment, 2) a parametric registration computed on coarse resolution images, and 3) an accurate nonlinear registration. In all three steps the NGF distance measure is minimized with respect to an increasingly flexible transformation. We apply the method in the ANHIR image registration challenge and evaluate its performance on the training data. The presented method is robust (error reduction in 99.6% of the cases), fast (runtime 4 seconds) and accurate (median relati…

In this paper, we present a short description of the method proposed to ANHIR challenge organized jointly with the IEEE ISBI 2019 conference. We propose a method consisting of preprocessing, initial alignment, nonrigid registration algorithms and a method to automatically choose the best result. The method turned out to be robust (99.792% robustness) and accurate (0.38% average median rTRE). The main drawback of the proposed method is relatively high computation time. However, this aspect can be easily improved by cleaning the code and proposing a GPU implementation.

Image registration is the process of transforming different sets of data into one coordinate system and is required for various remote sensing applications like change detection, image fusion, and other related areas. The effect of increased relief displacement, requirement of more control points, and increased data volume are the challenges associated with the registration of high resolution image data. The objective of this research work is to study the most efficient techniques and to investigate the extent of improvement achievable by enhancing them with Wavelet transform. The SIFT feature…
In this paper, a method for Automatic Image Registration (AIR) through histogram is proposed. Automatic image registration is one of the crucial steps in the analysis of remotely sensed data. A new acquired image must be transformed, using image registration techniques, to match the orientation and scale of previous related images. This new approach combines several segmentations of the pair of images to be registered. A relaxation parameter on the histogram modes delineation is introduced. It is followed by characterization of the extracted objects through the objects area, axis ratio, and pe…

The implementation of automatic image registration is still difficult in various applications. In this paper, an automatic image registration approach through line-support region segmentation and geometrical outlier removal (ALRS-GOR) is proposed. This new approach is designed to address the problems associated with the registration of images with affine deformations and inconsistent content, such as remote sensing images with different spectral content or noise interference, or map images with inconsistent annotations. To begin with, line-support regions, namely a straight region whose points…

In this paper, an automatic method is proposed to perform image registration in visible and infrared pair of video sequences for multiple targets. In multimodal image analysis like image fusion systems, color and IR sensors are placed close to each other and capture a same scene simultaneously, but the videos are not properly aligned by default because of different fields of view, image capturing information, working principle and other camera specifications. Because the scenes are usually not planar, alignment needs to be performed continuously by extracting relevant common information. In th…
Image registration (IR) is a fundamental task in image processing for matching two or more images of the same scene taken at different times, from different viewpoints and/or by different sensors. Due to the enormous diversity of IR applications, automatic IR remains a challenging problem to this day. A wide range of techniques has been developed for various data types and problems. However, they might not handle effectively very large images, which give rise usually to more complex transformations, e.g., deformations and various other distortions. In this paper we present a genetic programmin…

The loss function of an unsupervised multimodal image registration framework has two terms, i.e., a metric for similarity measure and regularization. In the deep learning era, researchers proposed many approaches to automatically learn the similarity metric, which has been shown effective in improving registration performance. However, for the regularization term, most existing multimodal registration approaches still use a hand-crafted formula to impose artificial properties on the estimated deformation field. In this work, we propose a unimodal cyclic regularization training pipeline, which …

In this paper, we propose an implementation of both Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping (LDDMM) and Metamorphosis image registration using a semi-Lagrangian scheme for geodesic shooting. We propose to solve both problems as an inexact matching providing a single and unifying cost function. We demonstrate that for image registration the use of a semi-Lagrangian scheme is more stable than a standard Eulerian scheme. Our GPU implementation is based on PyTorch, which greatly simplifies and accelerates the computations thanks to its powerful automatic differentiation engine. It will be f…

Purpose: The fusion of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and magnetic resonance (MR) images for guiding targeted prostate biopsy has significantly improved the biopsy yield of aggressive cancers. A key component of MR-TRUS fusion is image registration. However, it is very challenging to obtain a robust automatic MR-TRUS registration due to the large appearance difference between the two imaging modalities. The work presented in this paper aims to tackle this problem by addressing two challenges: (i) the definition of a suitable similarity metric and (ii) the determination of a suitable optimizatio…

Image registration, the process of aligning two or more images, is the core technique of many (semi-)automatic medical image analysis tasks. Recent studies have shown that deep learning methods, notably convolutional neural networks (ConvNets), can be used for image registration. Thus far training of ConvNets for registration was supervised using predefined example registrations. However, obtaining example registrations is not trivial. To circumvent the need for predefined examples, and thereby to increase convenience of training ConvNets for image registration, we propose the Deep Learning Im…

Registration is a core component of many imaging pipelines. In case of clinical scans, with lower resolution and sometimes substantial motion artifacts, registration can produce poor results. Visual assessment of registration quality in large clinical datasets is inefficient. In this work, we propose to automatically assess the quality of registration to an atlas in clinical FLAIR MRI scans of the brain. The method consists of automatically segmenting the ventricles of a given scan using a neural network, and comparing the segmentation to the atlas' ventricles propagated to image space. We use…

Image registration between histology and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a challenging task due to differences in structural content and contrast. Too thick and wide specimens cannot be processed all at once and must be cut into smaller pieces. This dramatically increases the complexity of the problem, since each piece should be individually and manually pre-aligned. To the best of our knowledge, no automatic method can reliably locate such piece of tissue within its respective whole in the MRI slice, and align it without any prior information. We propose here a novel automatic approach to…

We refer this to zero-shot learning, due to nonoverlap between training and testing dataset (none of the network modules in the processing pipeline were trained specifically for the task of medical image registration). Highlights of our technique are: (a) No requirement of a training dataset (b) Keypoints i.e.locations of important features are automatically estimated (c) The number of key points in this model is fixed and can possibly be tuned as a hyperparam…
Multi-view point cloud registration is fundamental in 3D reconstruction. Since there are close connections between point clouds captured from different viewpoints, registration performance can be enhanced if these connections be harnessed properly. Therefore, this paper models the registration problem as multi-task optimization, and proposes a novel bi-channel knowledge sharing mechanism for effective and efficient problem solving. The modeling of multi-view point cloud registration as multi-task optimization are twofold. By simultaneously considering the local accuracy of two point clouds as …

Deformable image registration between Computed Tomography (CT) images and Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging is essential for many image-guided therapies. In this paper, we propose a novel translation-based unsupervised deformable image registration method. Distinct from other translation-based methods that attempt to convert the multimodal problem (e.g., CT-to-MR) into a unimodal problem (e.g., MR-to-MR) via image-to-image translation, our method leverages the deformation fields estimated from both: (i) the translated MR image and (ii) the original CT image in a dual-stream fashion, and automati…

Deep learning-based image registration approaches have shown competitive performance and run-time advantages compared to conventional image registration methods. However, existing learning-based approaches mostly require to train separate models with respect to different regularization hyperparameters for manual hyperparameter searching and often do not allow spatially-variant regularization. In this work, we propose a learning-based registration approach based on a novel conditional spatially adaptive instance normalization (CSAIN) to address these challenges. The proposed method introduces a…
Medical image registration is an active research topic and forms a basis for many medical image analysis tasks. Although image registration is a rather general concept specialized methods are usually required to target a specific registration problem. The development and implementation of such methods has been tough so far as the gradient of the objective has to be computed. Also, its evaluation has to be performed preferably on a GPU for larger images and for more complex transformation models and regularization terms. This hinders researchers from rapid prototyping and poses hurdles to repro…
This paper presents a predictive model for estimating regularization parameters of diffeomorphic image registration. We introduce a novel framework that automatically determines the parameters controlling the smoothness of diffeomorphic transformations. Our method significantly reduces the effort of parameter tuning, which is time and labor-consuming. To achieve the goal, we develop a predictive model based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) that learns the mapping between pairwise images and the regularization parameter of image registration. In contrast to previous methods that esti…

Automatic registration of multimodal remote sensing data (e.g., optical, LiDAR, SAR) is a challenging task due to the significant non-linear radiometric differences between these data. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel feature descriptor named the Histogram of Orientated Phase Congruency (HOPC), which is based on the structural properties of images. Furthermore, a similarity metric named HOPCncc is defined, which uses the normalized correlation coefficient (NCC) of the HOPC descriptors for multimodal registration. In the definition of the proposed similarity metric, we first…

This paper focuses on potential accuracy of remote sensing images registration. We investigate how this accuracy can be estimated without ground truth available and used to improve registration quality of mono- and multi-modal pair of images. At the local scale of image fragments, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) on registration error is estimated for each local correspondence between coarsely registered pair of images. This CRLB is defined by local image texture and noise properties. Opposite to the standard approach, where registration accuracy is only evaluated at the output of the registr…

Minutia-based palmprint recognition systems has got lots of interest in last two decades. Due to the large number of minutiae in a palmprint, approximately 1000 minutiae, the matching process is time consuming which makes it unpractical for real time applications. One way to address this issue is aligning all palmprint images to a reference image and bringing them to a same coordinate system. Bringing all palmprint images to a same coordinate system, results in fewer computations during minutia matching. Consecutive thin sections of tissue samples make it possible to study local variation in e.g. protein expression and tumor heterogeneity by staining for a new protein in each section. In order to compare and correlate patterns of different proteins, the images have to be registered with high accuracy. The problem we want to solve is registration of gigapixel whole slide images (WSI). In order to tackle the difficulty associated with the ill-posed nature of the image registration problem, regularization is often used to constrain the solution space. For most learning-based registration approaches, the regularization usually has a fixed weight and only constrains the spatial transformation. Such convention has two limitations: (i) Besides the laborious grid search for the optimal fixed weight, the regularization strength of a specific image pair should be associated with the content of the images, thus the "one value fits all" training scheme is not ideal; (ii) Only spatiall…

In medical imaging, surface registration is extensively used for performing systematic comparisons between anatomical structures, with a prime example being the highly convoluted brain cortical surfaces. Prior registration works have primarily focused on using manually labeled landmarks and solving highly nonlinear optimization problems, which are time-consuming and hence hin…
