In this paper we give new constructions of Ferrer diagram rank metric codes, which achieve the largest possible dimension. In particular, we prove several cases of a conjecture by T. Etzion and N. Silberstein. We also establish a sharp lower bound on the dimension of linear rank metric anticodes with a given profile. Combining our results with the multilevel construction, we produce examples of subspace codes with the largest known cardinality for the given parameters.
This paper investigates the construction of rank-metric codes with specified Ferrers diagram shapes. These codes play a role in the multilevel construction for subspace codes. A conjecture from 2009 provides an upper bound for the dimension of a rank-metric code with given specified Ferrers diagram shape and rank distance. While the conjecture in its generality is wide open, several cases have been established in the literature. This paper contributes further cases of Ferrers diagrams and ranks for which the conjecture holds true. In addition, the proportion of maximal Ferrers diagram codes wi…
This paper provides new constructions and lower bounds for subspace codes, using Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes from matchings of the complete graph and pending blocks. We present different constructions for constant dimension codes with minimum injection distance $2$ or $k-1$, where $k$ is the constant dimension. Furthermore, we present a construction of new codes from old codes for any minimum distance. Then we construct non-constant dimension codes from these codes. The examples of codes obtained by these constructions are the largest known codes for the given parameters.
In this paper, we will employ the technique used in the proof of classical Singleton bound to derive upper bounds for rank metric codes and Ferrers diagram rank metric codes. These upper bounds yield the rank distance Singleton bound and an upper bound presented by Etzion and Silberstein respectively. Also we introduce generalized Ferrers diagram rank metric code which is a Ferrers diagram rank metric code where the underlying rank metric code is not necessarily linear. A new Singleton bound for generalized Ferrers diagram rank metric code is obtained using our technique.
Optimal rank-metric codes in Ferrers diagrams are considered. Such codes consist of matrices having zeros at certain fixed positions and can be used to construct good codes in the projective space. Four techniques and constructions of Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes are presented, each providing optimal codes for different diagrams and parameters.
Coding in the projective space has received recently a lot of attention due to its application in network coding. Reduced row echelon form of the linear subspaces and Ferrers diagram can play a key role for solving coding problems in the projective space. In this paper we propose a method to design error-correcting codes in the projective space. We use a multilevel approach to design our codes. First, we select a constant weight code. Each codeword defines a skeleton of a basis for a subspace in reduced row echelon form. This skeleton contains a Ferrers diagram on which we design a rank-metric…

In 2009, Etzion and Siberstein proposed a conjecture on the largest dimension of a linear space of matrices over a finite field in which all nonzero matrices are supported on a Ferrers diagram and have rank bounded below by a given integer. Although several cases of the conjecture have been established in the past decade, proving or disproving it remains to date a wide open problem. In this paper, we take a new look at the Etzion-Siberstein Conjecture, investigating its connection with rook theory. Our results show that the combinatorics behind this open problem is closely linked to the theory…
Codes in the Grassmannian space have found recently application in network coding. Representation of $k$-dimensional subspaces of $\F_q^n$ has generally an essential role in solving coding problems in the Grassmannian, and in particular in encoding subspaces of the Grassmannian. Different representations of subspaces in the Grassmannian are presented. We use two of these representations for enumerative encoding of the Grassmannian. One enumerative encoding is based on Ferrers diagrams representation of subspaces; and another is based on identifying vector and reduced row echelon form represent…
As shown in [28], one of the five isomorphism types of optimal binary subspace codes of size 77 for packet length v=6, constant dimension k=3 and minimum subspace distance d=4 can be constructed by first expurgating and then augmenting the corresponding lifted Gabidulin code in a fairly simple way. The method was refined in [32,26] to yield an essentially computer-free construction of a currently best-known plane subspace code of size 329 for (v,k,d)=(7,3,4). In this paper we generalize the expurgation-augmentation approach to arbitrary packet length v, providing both a detailed theoretical an…
The Plücker coordinate description of subspaces has been recently discussed in the context of constant dimension subspace codes for random networks, as well as the Schubert cell description of certain code parameters. In this paper this classical tool is used to reformulate some standard constructions of constant dimension codes so as to give a unified framework. A general method of constructing non-constant dimension subspace codes with respect to a given minimum subspace distance or minimum injection distance among subspaces is presented. These codes may be described as the union of constant…
We study the row-space partition and the pivot partition on the matrix space $\mathbb{F}_q^{n \times m}$. We show that both these partitions are reflexive and that the row-space partition is self-dual. Moreover, using various combinatorial methods, we explicitly compute the Krawtchouk coefficients associated with these partitions. This establishes MacWilliams-type identities for the row-space and pivot enumerators of linear rank-metric codes. We then generalize the Singleton-like bound for rank-metric codes, and introduce two new concepts of code extremality. Both of them generalize the notion…
In network coding, a flag code is a collection of flags, that is, sequences of nested subspaces of a vector space over a finite field. Due to its definition as the sum of the corresponding subspace distances, the flag distance parameter encloses a hidden combinatorial structure. To bring it to light, in this paper, we interpret flag distances by means of distance paths drawn in a convenient distance support. The shape of such a support allows us to create an ad hoc associated Ferrers diagram frame where we develop a combinatorial approach to flag codes by relating the possible realizations of …
This paper provides new constructive lower bounds for constant dimension codes, using different techniques such as Ferrers diagram rank metric codes and pending blocks. Constructions for two families of parameters of constant dimension codes are presented. The examples of codes obtained by these constructions are the largest known constant dimension codes for the given parameters.
The projective space of order $n$ over a finite field $\F_q$ is a set of all subspaces of the vector space $\F_q^{n}$. In this work, we consider error-correcting codes in the projective space, focusing mainly on constant dimension codes. We start with the different representations of subspaces in the projective space. These representations involve matrices in reduced row echelon form, associated binary vectors, and Ferrers diagrams. Based on these representations, we provide a new formula for the computation of the distance between any two subspaces in the projective space. We examine lifted m…
We define a class of automorphisms of rational function fields of finite characteristic and employ these to construct different types of optimal linear rank-metric codes. The first construction is of generalized Gabidulin codes over rational function fields. Reducing these codes over finite fields, we obtain maximum rank distance (MRD) codes which are not equivalent to generalized twisted Gabidulin codes. We also construct optimal Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes which settles further a conjecture by Etzion and Silberstein.
