We present results from a homogeneous analysis of the broadband 0.3-10 keV CCD resolution as well as of soft X-ray high-resolution grating spectra of a hard X-ray flux-limited sample of 26 Seyfert galaxies observed with XMM-Newton. Our goal is to characterise the warm absorber (WA) properties along the line-of-sight to the active nucleus. We significantly detect WAs in $65\%$ of the sample sources. Our results are consistent with WAs being present in at least half of the Seyfert galaxies in the nearby Universe, in agreement with previous estimates . We find a gap in the distribution of the ionisation parameter in the range $0.5<\logξ<1.5$ which we interpret as a thermally unstable region for WA clouds. This may indicate that the warm absorber flow is probably constituted by a clumpy distribution of discrete clouds rather than a continuous medium. The distribution of the WA column densities for the sources with broad Fe K$α$ lines are similar to those sources which do not have broadened emission lines. Therefore the detected broad Fe K$α$ emission lines are bonafide and not artifacts of ionised absorption in the soft X-rays. The WA parameters show no correlation among themselves, with the exception of the ionisation parameter versus column density. The shallow slope of the $\logξ$ versus $\log v_{\rm out}$ linear regression ($0.12\pm 0.03$) is inconsistent with the scaling laws predicted by radiation or magneto-hydrodynamic-driven winds. Our results suggest also that WA and Ultra Fast Outflows (UFOs) do not represent extreme manifestation of the same astrophysical system.
This paper is a sequel to the extensive study of warm absorber (WA) in X-rays carried out using high resolution grating spectral data from XMM-Newton satellite (WAX-I). Here we discuss the global dynamical properties as well as the energetics of the WA components detected in the WAX sample. The slope of WA density profile ($n\propto r^{-α}$) estimated from the linear regression slope of ionization parameter $ξ$ and column density $N_H$ in the WAX sample is $α=1.236\pm 0.034$. We find that the WA clouds possibly originate as a result of photo-ionised evaporation from the inner edge of the torus…
The study of winds in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is of utmost importance as they may provide the long sought-after link between the central black hole and the host galaxy, establishing the AGN feedback. Recently, Laha et al. (2014) reported the X-ray analysis of a sample of 26 Seyferts observed with XMM-Newton, which are part of the so-called warm absorbers in X-rays (WAX) sample. They claim the non-detection of Fe K absorbers indicative of ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) in four observations previously analyzed by Tombesi et al. (2010). They mainly impute the Tombesi et al. detections to an impr…
We present a study of the core of the Fe Ka emission line at ~6.4 keV in a sample of type II Seyfert galaxies observed by the Chandra High Energy Grating (HEG). The sample consists of 29 observations of 10 unique sources. We present measurements of the Fe Ka line parameters with the highest spectral resolution currently available. In particular, we derive the most robust intrinsic line widths for some of the sources in the sample to date. We obtained a weighted mean FWHM of 2000 \pm 160 km/s for 8 out of 10 sources (the remaining sources had insufficient signal-to-noise). From a comparison wit…
We report on the detection of ultra-fast outflows in the Seyfert~1 galaxy Mrk 590. These outflows are identified through highly blue-shifted absorption lines of OVIII and NeIX in the medium energy grating spectrum and SiXIC and MgXII in the high energy grating spectrum on board Chandra X-ray observatory. Our best fit photoionization model requires two absorber components at outflow velocities of 0.176c and 0.0738c and a third tentative component at 0.0867c. The components at 0.0738c and 0.0867c have high ionization parameter and high column density, similar to other ultra-fast outflows detecte…
We present a detailed analysis of XMM-Newton X-ray spectra of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1044. We find robust evidence for a multi-phase, ultra-fast outflow, traced by four separate components in the grating spectrum. One component has high column density and ionization state, and is outflowing at 0.15c. The other three wind components have lower temperature, lower column density, and have outflow velocities 0.08c. This wind structure is strikingly similar to that found in IRAS 17020+4544, suggesting that stratified winds may be a common feature of ultra-fast outflows. Such structure…
Methods. We analyse two observations taken with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer of Chandra. We investigated the spectral response to a sudden flux decrease by a factor of 5, which occurred during the second observation. Results. We detect a highly ionised absorption component with an outflow velocity of -4670 km/s, one of the highest outflow velocity components observed in a Seyfert 1 galaxy. The spectra contain a relativistic O VIII Ly alpha line, and four absorption components spanning a range in ionisation parameter xi between 0.07 and 3.19. An emission component producing …
We study the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk~509 with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) of XMM-Newton using the RGS multi-pointing mode of XMM-Newton for the first time in order to constrain the properties of the outflow in this object. We want to obtain the most accurate spectral properties from the 600 ks spectrum of Mrk 509 which has excellent statistical quality. We derive an accurate relative calibration for the effective area of the RGS, derive an accurate absolute wavelength calibration, improve the method for adding time-dependent spectra and enhance the efficiency of the spectral…
We extend the study of the core of the Fe K$α$ emission line at \sim 6.4 keV in Seyfert galaxies reported in Yaqoob & Padmanabhan (2004) using a larger sample observed by the Chandra High Energy Grating (HEG). Whilst heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are excluded from the sample, these data offer some of the highest precision measurements of the peak energy of the Fe K$α$ line, and the highest spectral resolution measurements of the width of the core of the line in unobscured and moderately obscured ($N_{H}<10^{23} \ \rm cm^{-2}$) Seyfert galaxies to date. The Fe K$α$ line is dete…
We present the analysis of grating spectra of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS 17020+4544 observed by XMM-Newton in 2004 and 2014. In a previous work on these data, we reported the discovery of a multi-component ultra-fast outflow that is capable of producing feedback in the host galaxy. We also reported the presence of a slow, multi-phase warm absorber. In this follow-up paper, we confirm that this low velocity absorber can be modeled by four layers of ionized gas. When crossing our line-of-sight, this gas presents peculiar changes along the 10-yr time scale elapsed between the two obser…
Previous surveys of outflows in low-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN) have relied on the analysis of sources selected primarily for their optical/X-ray brightness, and are therefore biased. Towards determining the outflow properties of local AGN, we detect warm absorption signatures of O VII and O VIII absorption edges in the available Suzaku/XMM-Newton CCD spectra of an unbiased sample of 44 Seyfert 1-1.5 sources selected in the very hard X-rays (14-195 keV) with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope. From our analysis, we find that O VII and O VIII absorption edges are present in 41% of the sa…
We present \chandra high energy transmission grating spectra of the narrow-line Seyfert-1 galaxy Ark 564. The spectrum shows numerous absorption lines which are well modeled with low velocity outflow components usually observed in Seyfert galaxies \citep{Gupta2013}. There are, however, some residual absorption lines which are not accounted for by low-velocity outflows. Here we present identifications of the strongest lines as $Kα$ transitions of \oviin (two lines) and \ovin at outflow velocities of $\sim 0.1c$. These lines are detected at $6.9σ$, $6.2σ$, and $4.7σ$ respectively and cannot be d…
High resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the warm absorber in the nearby X-ray bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, Mrk 1040 is presented. The observations were carried out in the 2013-2014 timeframe using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating with a total exposure of 200 ks. A multitude of absorption lines from Ne, Mg and Si are detected from a wide variety of ionization states. In particular, the detection of inner K-shell absorption lines from Ne, Mg and Si, from charge states ranging from F-like to Li-like ions, suggests the presence of a substantial amount of low ionization absorbing gas, illumin…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564 was observed with Chandra high energy transmission gratings for 250 ks. We present the high resolution X-ray spectrum that shows several associated absorption lines. The photoionization model requires two warm absorbers with two different ionization states (logU=0.39\pm0.03 and logU=-0.99\pm0.13), both with moderate outflow velocities (~100 km s^-1) and relatively low line of sight column densities (logNH=20.94 and 20.11 cm^-2). The high ionization phase produces absorption lines of OVII, OVIII, NeIX, NeX, MgXI, FeXVII and FeXVIII while the low ionization phase pro…
We present results from an analysis of the broad-band, 0.3-195 keV, X-ray spectra of 48 Seyfert 1-1.5 sources detected in the very hard X-rays with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). This sample is selected in an all-sky survey conducted in the 14-195 keV band. Therefore, our sources are largely unbiased towards both obscuration and host galaxy properties. Our detailed and uniform model fits to Suzaku/BAT and XMM-Newton/BAT spectra include the neutral absorption, direct power-law, reflected emission, soft excess, warm absorption, and narrow Fe K-alpha emission properties for the entire sam…
We investigate the photoionised X-ray emission line regions (ELRs) within the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, to determine if there are any characteristic changes between observations taken fourteen years apart. We compare XMM-Newton observations collected in 2000 and 2014, simultaneously fitting the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) and EPIC-pn spectra of each epoch, for the first time, with the photoionisation model, PION, in SPEX. We find that four PION components are required to fit the majority of the emission lines in the spectra of NGC 1068, with $\log ξ=1-4$, $\log N_H>26 m^{-2}$, and $…
We present the spectral results from a 130 ks observation, obtained from the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission-Newton (XMM-Newton) observatory, of the type I Seyfert galaxy Fairall 9. An X-ray hardness-ratio analysis of the light-curves, reveals a `softer-when-brighter' behaviour which is typical for radio-quiet type I Seyfert galaxies. Moreover, we analyse the high spectral-resolution data of the reflection grating spectrometer and we did not find any significant evidence supporting the presence of warm-absorber in the low X-ray energy part of the source's spectrum. This means that the central nucle…
Outflows of photoionized gas are commonly detected in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies. However, the evidence for this phenomenon in broad line radio galaxies, which are analogous to Seyfert 1 galaxies in the radio-loud regime, has so far been scarce. Here, we present the analysis of the X-ray absorption in the radio-loud quasar 4C +74.26. With the aim of characterizing the kinetic and the ionization conditions of the absorbing material, we fitted jointly the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) spectra, w…
We study the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy, Markarian 3, based on imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy observations taken by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We construct a deconvolved X-ray image, which reveals the S-shaped morphology of the hot gas in the narrow line region (NLR). While this morphology is similar to the radio and [O III] emission, the distribution of the X-ray gas is broader than that obtained at these other wavelengths. By mapping the density and temperature distribution of the hot gas in the NLR, we demonstrate the presence of shocks towards the west ($M=2.5^{+1.0}_{-0.6…
We analyze the \textit{Chandra} High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) observation of the Seyfert $2$ AGN IRAS\,18325-5926. We detect a $v=-360^{+41}_{-66}$~km~s$^{-1}$ blueshifted ionized absorber in the X-ray spectrum, with photoionization parameter $\logξ=2.0^{+0.1}_{-0.1}$ and hydrogen column density $N_{\rm H}=1.55^{+0.75}_{-0.38}\times10^{21}$~cm$^{-2}$. The absorber may be a photoionized wind originating in the obscuring torus/global covering around the black hole or outer edge of the accretion disk. The estimated mass outflow rate suggests that the supermassive black hol…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk841 was observed five times between 2001 and 2005 by the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory. The source is well known for showing spectral complexity in the variable iron line and in the soft X-ray excess. This paper reports on the first study of Mrk841 soft X-ray spectrum at high spectral resolution. The availability of multiple exposures obtained by the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) cameras allows a thorough study of the complex absorption and emission spectral features in the soft X-ray band. The three combined exposures obtained in January 2001 and the two obtained…
We analyzed the spectral shape of the Compton shoulder around the neutral Fe-K$_α$ line of the Compton-thick type II Seyfert nucleus of the Circinus galaxy. The characteristics of this Compton shoulder with respect to the reflected continuum and Fe-K$_α$ line core intensity are a powerful diagnostics tool for analyzing the structure of the molecular tori, which obscure the central engine. We applied our Monte-Carlo-based X-ray reflection spectral model to the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating data and successfully constrained the various spectral parameters independently, using only the…
We present the results of recent Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer and Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 which shows a strong, non-varying X-ray warm absorber and physically related and kinematically varying UV absorption. We compare our new observations to high-resolution, high signal-to-noise archival data from 2001, allowing a unique investigation into the long-term variations of the absorption over a 12 yr period. We find no statistically significant changes in the physical properties of the X-ray abs…
We present an analysis of all the archival high resolution spectra of the Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk~335 obtained with Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on board \textit{XMM-Newton}. The spectra show rich emission and absorption features in low and intermediate flux intervals. We model the emission lines with the \textsc{pion\_xs} grid and try to find any possible correlation between the properties of the emitting gas and the source flux. Current data does not allow detailed trace of the response of the line emitting gas to the X-ray flux of Mrk~335, but the flux of the X-ray lines i…
Recent high-resolution measurements suggest that the soft X-ray spectrum of obscured Radio Galaxies (RG) exhibits signatures of photoionised gas (e.g. 3C 445 and 3C 33) similar to those observed in radio-quiet obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). While signatures of warm absorbing gas covering a wide range of temperature and ionisation states have been detected in about one half of the population of nearby Seyfert 1 galaxies, no traces of warm absorber gas have been reported to date in the high-resolution spectra of Broad Line Radio Galaxies (BLRG). We present here the first detection of a s…
We present the analysis of a Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) observation of the local Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365. The source, well known for its dramatic X-ray spectral variability, was caught in a reflection-dominated, Compton-thick state. The high spatial resolution afforded by Chandra allowed us to isolate the soft X-ray emission from the active nucleus, neglecting most of the contribution from the kpc-scale starburst ring. The HETG spectra thus revealed a wealth of He- and H-like lines from photoionized gas, whereas in larger aperture observations these are almost exclusively …
We present a spectral analysis of the 118 ks High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) observation of the X-ray bright Seyfert 1.5 galaxy MCG +8-11-11, in conjunction with 100 ks of archival Suzaku data, aimed at investigating the signatures of warm absorption and Compton reflection reported from previous Suzaku and XMM-Newton studies of the source. Contrary to previous results, we find that warm absorption is not required by the data. Instead, we report upper limits on absorption lines that are below previous (marginal) detections. Fe Ka line emission is clearly detected and is likely resolved…
We present a long Suzaku observation of 3C 382. A Swift BAT spectrum from the 58-month survey is also analyzed, together with an archival XMM-Newton EPIC exposure. Our main result is the finding with Suzaku of a broad FeK line with a relativistic profile consistent with emission from an accretion disk at tens of gravitational radii from the central black hole. The XIS data indicate emission from highly ionized iron and allow us to set tight, albeit model-dependent, constraints on the inner and outer radii of the disk reflecting region, r_in~10r_g and r_out~20r_g, respectively, and on the disk …
We review the soft X-ray properties of 3C 390.3, 3C 120, 3C 382 and 3C 445, the only Broad Line Radio Galaxies (BLRG) for which good quality gratings data are currently available. The XMM-Newton/RGS data of 3C 390.3 and 3C 120 were re-analyzed searching for warm absorbers, already discovered in 3C 382 and 3C 445. We confirm the absence of ionized absorption features in 3C 120, but find signatures of outflowing gas (v_out \sim 10^2 km s^-1) in 3C 390.3. Its warm absorber (Logξ\sim 2 erg cm s^-1, N_H\sim 10^20 cm^-2), similar to that observed in 3C 382, is probably placed in the Narrow Line Regi…
We present an analysis of the narrow Fe K-alpha line in Chandra/HETGS observations of the Seyfert AGN, NGC 4151. The sensitivity and resolution afforded by the gratings reveal asymmetry in this line. Models including weak Doppler boosting, gravitational red-shifts, and scattering are generally preferred over Gaussians at the 5 sigma level of confidence, and generally measure radii consistent with R ~ 500-1000 GM/c^2. Separate fits to "high/unobscured" and "low/obscured" phases reveal that the line originates at smaller radii in high flux states; model-independent tests indicate that this effec…
The Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 is known to exhibit significant X-ray spectral/flux variations and have a number of emission/absorption features. X-ray observations have revealed that these absorption features are blueshifted, which indicates that NGC 4051 has warm absorber outflow. In order to constrain physical parameters of the warm absorber outflow, we analyze the archival data with the longest exposure taken by XMM-Newton in 2009. We calculate the root-mean-square (RMS) spectra with the grating spectral resolution for the first time. The RMS spectra have a sharp peak and several…
NGC1275 is the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) in the Perseus cluster and hosts the active galactic nucleus (AGN) that is heating the central 100\,kpc of the intracluster medium (ICM) atmosphere via a regulated feedback loop. Here we use a deep 490ks Cycle-19 Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) observation of NGC1275 to study the anatomy of this AGN. The X-ray continuum is adequately described by an unabsorbed power-law with photon index $Γ\approx 1.9$, creating strong tension with the detected column of molecular gas seen via HCN and HCO$^+$ line absorption against the parsec-scale…

We report on the results from a large observational campaign on the bare Seyfert galaxy Ark 120, jointly carried out in 2014 with XMM-Newton, Chandra, and NuSTAR. The fortunate line of sight to this source, devoid of any significant absorbing material, provides an incomparably clean view to the nuclear regions of an active galaxy. Here we focus on the analysis of the iron fluorescence features, which form a composite emission pattern in the 6$-$7 keV band. The prominent K$α$ line from neutral iron at 6.4 keV is resolved in the Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating spectrum to a full-width a…
The X-ray narrow emission line region (NELR) of the archetypal Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC\,5548 has been interpreted as a single-phase photoionized plasma that is absorbed by some of the warm absorber components. This scenario requires those overlaying warm absorber components to have larger distance (to the central engine) than the X-ray NELR, which is not fully consistent with the distance estimates found in the literature. Therefore, we reanalyze the high-resolution spectra obtained in 2013--2014 with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) aboard \textit{XMM}-Newton to provide an alternative i…
(Abridged) The archetypal Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 was observed in 2013-2014 in the context of an extensive multiwavelength campaign, which revealed the source to be in an extraordinary state of persistent heavy obscuration. We re-analyzed the archival grating spectra obtained by XMM-Newton and Chandra between 1999 and 2007 in order to characterize the classic warm absorber (WA) using consistent models and up-to-date photoionization codes and atomic physics databases and to construct a baseline model that can be used as a template for the WA in the 2013 observations. The WA in NGC 5548 is com…
