We show that in transition metal compounds containing structural metal dimers there may exist in the presence of different orbitals a special state with partial formation of singlets by electrons on one orbital, while others are effectively decoupled and may give e.g. long-range magnetic order or stay paramagnetic. Similar situation can be realized in dimers spontaneously formed at structural phase transitions, which can be called orbital-selective Peierls transition. This can occur in case of strongly nonuniform hopping integrals for different orbitals and small intra-atomic Hund's rule coupling JH. Yet another consequence of this picture is that for odd number of electrons per dimer there exist competition between double exchange mechanism of ferromagnetism, and the formation of singlet dimer by electron on one orbital, with remaining electrons giving a net spin of a dimer. The first case is realized for strong Hund's rule coupling, typical for 3d compounds, whereas the second is more plausible for 4d-5d compounds. We discuss some implications of these phenomena, and consider examples of real systems, in which orbital-selective phase seems to be realized.
We report high-pressure x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements combined with ab-initio calculations to demonstrate that the high-pressure optical and transport transitions recently reported in TiOCl, correspond in fact to an enhanced Ti3+-Ti3+ dimerization existing already at room temperature. Our results confirm the formation of a metal-metal bond between Ti3+ ions along the b-axis of TiOCl, accompanied by a strong reduction of the electronic gap. The evolution of the dimerization with pressure suggests a crossover from the spin-Peierls to a conventional Peierls situation at high pr…
The spin-Peierls transition is modeled in the dimer phase of the spin-$1/2$ chain with exchanges $J_1$, $J_2 = αJ_1$ between first and second neighbors. The degenerate ground state generates an energy cusp that qualitatively changes the dimerization $δ(T)$ compared to Peierls systems with nondegenerate ground states. The parameters $J_1 = 160$ K, $α= 0.35$ plus a lattice stiffness account for the magnetic susceptibility of CuGeO$_3$, its specific heat anomaly, and the $T$ dependence of the lowest gap.
Using {\it ab initio} density functional theory, here we systematically study the monolayer MoOCl$_2$ with a $4d^2$ electronic configuration. Our main results is that an orbital-selective Peierls phase (OSPP) develops in MoOCl$_2$, resulting in the dimerization of the Mo chain along the $b$-axis. Specifically, the Mo-$d_{xy}$ orbitals form robust molecular-orbital states inducing localized $d_{xy}$ singlet dimers, while the Mo-$d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals remain delocalized and itinerant. Our study shows that MoOCl$_2$ is globally metallic, with the Mo-$d_{xy}$ orbital bonding-antibonding splittings o…
We report on a zero-field 63Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) study of nonmagnetic Mg impurity substituted Cu1-xMgxGeO3 (single crystals; the spin-Peierls transition temperature Tsp~14, 13.5, and 11 K for x=0, 0.0043, and 0.020) in a temperature range from 4.2 K to 250 K. We found that below T*~77 K, Cu NQR spectra are broadened and nonexponential Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation increases for undoped and more remarkably for Mg-doped samples. The results indicate that random lattice distortion and impurity-induced spins appear below T*, which we associate with a precursor of the spin-Pei…
The spin-Peierls transition in the ground state of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model coupled to adiabatic bond phonons is studied using a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The transition from a gapless Neel state to a spin-gapped Peierls state is explored in the parameter space spanned by the spatial anisotropy and the strength of spin-lattice coupling. It is found that for any finite inter-chain coupling, the transition to a dimerized Peierls ground state occurs only when the spin-lattice coupling exceeds a finite, non-zero critical value. This is in contrast to the pure 1D mo…
We investigate the Peierls transition in the one-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard model at half filling in the adiabatic approximation for the lattice. Depending on the value of the electron-lattice coupling constant g the equilibrium dimerization can be either enhanced or suppressed by the Hubbard interaction U. Applying second order perturbation theory we determine the critical value g_c = 0.689348 below which the Hubbard interaction enhances the dimerization.
We have performed time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on powder samples of the unconventional spin-Peierls compound TiOBr using the fine-resolution Fermi chopper spectrometer (SEQUOIA) at the SNS. These measurements reveal two branches of magnetic excitations within the commensurate and incommensurate spin-Peierls phases, which we associate with n = 1 and n = 2 triplet excitations out of the singlet ground state. These measurements represent the first direct measure of the singlet-triplet energy gap in TiOBr, which is determined to be Eg = 21.2 +/- 1.0 meV.
The first-order transition of the charge-transfer complex TTF-CA (tetrathiafulvalene-chloranil) is both a neutral-ionic and a Peierls transition. In related organic charge transfer complexes, cooling at ambient pressure increases the ionicity $ρ$ in strikingly different ways, and is sometimes accompanied by a dielectric peak, that we relate to lattice stiffness, to structural and energetic disorder, and to the softening of the Peierls mode in the far-IR. The position operator $P$ for systems with periodic boundary conditions makes possible a systematic treatment of electron-phonon interactions…
A theory of the metal-insulator transition in vanadium dioxide from the high-temperature rutile to the low- temperature monoclinic phase is proposed on the basis of cluster dynamical mean field theory, in conjunction with the density functional scheme. The interplay of strong electronic Coulomb interactions and structural distortions, in particular the dimerization of vanadium atoms in the low temperature phase, plays a crucial role. We find that VO2 is not a conventional Mott insulator, but that the formation of dynamical V-V singlet pairs due to strong Coulomb correlations is necessary to tr…
We consider the dimer Hubbard model within Dynamical Mean Field Theory to study the interplay and competition between Mott and Peierls physics. We describe the various metal-insulator transition lines of the phase diagram and the break down of the different solutions that occur along them. We focus on the specific issue of the debated Mott-Peierls insulator crossover and describe the systematic evolution of the electronic structure across the phase diagram. We found that at low intra-dimer hopping the emerging local magnetic moments can unbind above a characteristic singlet temperature $T^*$. …
A study is presented of a two-dimensional frustrated and dimerized quantum spin-system which models the effect of inter-chain coupling in a spin-Peierls compound. Employing a bond-boson method to account for quantum disorder in the ground state the elementary excitations are evaluated in terms of gapful triplet modes. Results for the ground state energy and the spin gap are discussed. The triplet dispersion is found to be in excellent agreement with inelastic neutron scattering data in the dimerized phase of the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3. Moreover, consistent with these neutron scattering …
The spin$-1/2$ chain with ferromagnetic exchange $J_1 < 0$ between first neighbors and antiferromagnetic $J_2 > 0$ between second neighbors supports two spin-Peierls (SP) instabilities depending on the frustration $α= J_2/\vert J_1\vert$. Instead of chain dimerization with two spins per unit cell, $J_1-J_2$ models with $α> 0.65$ and linear spin-phonon coupling are unconditionally unstable to sublattice dimerization with four spins per unit cell. Unequal $J_1$ to neighbors to the right and left extends the model to gapped ($γ> 0$) chains with conditional SP transitions at $T_{SP}$ to dimerized …
The effect of correlation on Peierls transition, which is accompanied by a dimerization, t_d, of a bond alternation for transfer energy, has been examined for a half-filled one-dimensional electron system with on-site repulsive interaction (U). By applying the renormalization group method to the interaction of the bosonized Hamiltonian, the dimerization has been calculated variationally and self-consistently with a fixed electron-phonon coupling constant (λ) and it is shown that t_d takes a maximum as a function of U. The result is examined in terms of charge gap and spin gap and is compared w…
The spin-$1/2$ chain with antiferromagnetic exchange $J_1$ and $J_2 = αJ_1$ between first and second neighbors, respectively, has both gapless and gapped ($Δ(α) > 0$) quantum phases at frustration $0 \le α\le 3/4$. The ground state instability of regular ($δ= 0$) chains to dimerization ($δ> 0$) drives a spin-Peierls transition at $T_{SP}(α)$ that varies with $α$ in these strongly correlated systems. The thermodynamic limit of correlated states is obtained by exact treatment of short chains followed by density matrix renormalization calculations of progressively longer chains. The doubly degene…
Using {\it ab initio} density functional theory and single-orbital Hubbard model calculations via the density matrix renormalization group method, we systematically studied the monolayer VOI$_2$ with a $3d^1$ electronic configuration. Our phonon calculations indicate that the orthorhombic $Pmm2$ FE-II phase is the most likely ground state, involving a ferroelectric distortion along the $a$-axis and V-V dimerization along the $b$-axis. Specifically, the "pseudo Jahn-Teller" effect caused by the coupling between empty V ($d_{xz/yz}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$) and O $2p$ states is proposed as the mechan…
We add a Heisenberg interaction term $\proptoλ$ in the one-dimensional SU(2)$\otimes$XY spin-orbital model introduced by B. Kumar. At $λ=0$ the spin and orbital degrees of freedom can be separated by a unitary transformation leading to an exact solution of the model. We show that a finite $λ>0$ leads to spontaneous dimerization of the system which in the thermodynamic limit becomes a smooth phase transition at $λ\to 0$, whereas it remains discontinuous within the first order perturbation approach. We present the behavior of the entanglement entropy, energy gap and dimerization order parameter …
The ground state of the spin-Peierls system TiOCl was probed using synchrotron x-ray diffraction on a single-crystal sample at T = 6 K. We tracked the evolution of the structural superlattice peaks associated with the dimerized ground state as a function of pressure. The dimerization along the b axis is rapidly suppressed in the vicinity of a first-order structural phase transition at Pc = 13.1(1) GPa. The high-pressure phase is characterized by an incommensurate charge density wave perpendicular to the original spin chain direction. These results show that the electronic ground state undergoe…
The zero and finite temperature spin-Peierls transitions in a quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model coupled to adiabatic bond phonons is investigated using the Stochastic Series Expansion (SSE) Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The quantum phase transition from a gapless Neel state to a spin-gapped Peierls state is studied in the parameter space spanned by spatial anisotropy, inter-chain coupling strength and spin-lattice coupling strength. It is found that for any finite inter-chain coupling, the transition to a dimerized Peierls ground state only occurs when the spin-lattice coupli…
We discovered a first-order phase transition between dimerized-antiferromagnetic and uniform-antiferromagnetic phases in impurity-doped spin-Peierls (SP) cuprate Cu{1-x}MgxGeO3. As impurity concentration increases, linear reduction of SP transition temperature (T{SP}) and linear increase of Neel temperature (TN) are observed up to x = 0.023. At this critical concentration (xc) SP transition suddenly disappears and TN jumps discontinuously. The peak of the susceptibility at xc around TN is not so sharp as those at other concentrations, which indicates the phase separation of low and high concen…
We use exact diagonalization combined with mean-field theory to investigate the phase diagram of the spin-orbital model for cubic vanadates. The spin-orbit coupling competes with Hund's exchange and triggers a novel phase, with the ordering of $t_{2g}$ orbital magnetic moments stabilized by the tilting of VO$_6$ octahedra. It explains qualitatively spin canting and reduction of magnetization observed in YVO$_3$. At finite temperature an orbital Peierls instability in the $C$-type antiferromagnetic phase induces modulation of magnetic exchange constants even in absence of lattice distortions. T…
We investigate the microscopic dynamics at the initial stage of photoinduced phase transitions in tetrathiafulvalene-$p$-chloranil by exact diagonalization. We first show that the one-dimensional extended Peierls-Hubbard model exhibits a neutral phase with small ionicity and negligible dimerization and an ionic phase with moderate ionicity and dimerization. Aside from these phases, we find a doubly ionized phase with strong dimerization that we call the "dipole" phase. These ground-state phases are characterized by various order parameters and the Zak phase, which is relevant to electronic pol…
We introduce a novel extension of the Gutzwiller variational wavefunction able to deal with insulators that escape any mean-field like description, as for instance non-magnetic insulators. As an application, we study the Mott transition from a paramagnetic metal into a non-magnetic Peierls, or valence-bond, Mott insulator. We analyze this model by means of our Gutzwiller wavefunction analytically in the limit of large coordination lattices, where we find that: (1) the Mott transition is first order; (2) the Peierls gap is large in the Mott insulator, although it is mainly contributed by the el…
Dynamical properties of the novel inorganic spin-Peierls compound α'--NaV2O5 are investigated using a one-dimensional dimerized Heisenberg model. By exact diagonalizations of chains with up to 28 sites, supplemented by a finite-size scaling analysis, the dimerization parameter δis determined by requiring that the model reproduces the experimentally observed spin gap Δ. The dynamical and static spin structure factors are calculated. As for CuGeO3, the existence of a low energy magnon branch separated from the continuum is predicted. The present calculations also suggest that a large magnetic Ra…
Motivated by the experiments on the organic compound $(Per)_{2}[Pt(mnt)_{2}]$, we study the ground state of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling with the density matrix renormalization group method. We show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter $J_{c}$, with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experime…
We use the density matrix renormalization group method to investigate the role of longitudinal quantized phonons on the Peierls transition in the spin-Peierls model. For both the XY and Heisenberg spin-Peierls model we show that the staggered phonon order parameter scales as $\sqrtλ$ (and the dimerized bond order scales as $λ$) as $λ\to 0$ (where $λ$ is the electron-phonon interaction). This result is true for both linear and cyclic chains. Thus, we conclude that the Peierls transition occurs at $λ=0$ in these models. Moreover, for the XY spin-Peierls model we show that the quantum predictions…
An overview is given of Raman and infrared spectroscopic studies of the inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$, with an emphasis on the magnetic fluctuations in the uniform, dimerized, and high field phases of this quasi one dimensional magneto-elastic compound.
It has been suggested that the metal-insulator transitions in a number of spinel materials with partially-filled t_2g d-orbitals can be explained as orbitally-driven Peierls instabilities. Motivated by these suggestions, we examine theoretically the possibility of formation of such orbitally-driven states within a simplified theoretical model, a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice with two directional metal orbitals per atomic site. We include orbital ordering and inter-atom electron-phonon interactions self-consistently within a semi-classical approximation, and onsite intra- and inter-orbit…
Polarized infrared reflectivity measurements have been performed on single crystals of the spin-Peierls compound alpha'-NaV2O5 in the temperature range 20-300 K. Pronounced spectral features associated with the formation of the dimerized phase were detected both in the a- and b-polarizations (perpendicular and parallel to the spin-1/2 chains, respectively). The temperature dependence of a salient spectral line at 718 cm^-1 sharply rising below the transition temperature T_SP obeys a (1-T/T_SP)^(2beta) law with T_SP \simeq 34.3$K and beta \simeq 0.25. In addition, a continuum signal is observed…
We consider the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the presence of an explicit dimerization $δ$. For a sufficiently strong nearest neighbour repulsion we establish the existence of a quantum phase transition between a mixed bond-order wave and charge-density wave phase from a pure bond-order wave phase. This phase transition is in the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model.
Photoinduced dynamics of charge density and lattice displacements is calculated by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a one-dimensional extended Peierls-Hubbard model with alternating potentials for the mixed-stack organic charge-transfer complex, TTF-CA. A pulse of oscillating electric field is incorporated into the Peierls phase of the transfer integral. The frequency, the amplitude, and the duration of the pulse are varied to study the nonlinear and cooperative character of the photoinduced transition. When the dimerized ionic phase is photoexcited, the threshold behavior i…
The dipole P(F) of systems with periodic boundary conditions (PBC) in a static electric field F is applied to one-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard models for organic charge-transfer (CT) salts. Exact results for P(F) are obtained for finite systems of N = 14 and 16 sites that are almost converged to infinite chains in deformable lattices subject to a Peierls transition. The electronic polarizability per site, α_{el} = (\partial P/\partial F)_0, of rigid stacks with alternating transfer integrals t(1 +/- δ) diverges at the neutral-ionic transition for δ= 0 but remains finite for δ> 0 in dimerized ch…
We report a synchrotron x-ray scattering study of the diluted spin-Peierls (SP) material Cu_{1-x}Mg_xGeO_3. In a recent paper we have shown that the SP dimerization attains long-range order only for x < x_c = 0.022(0.001). Here we report that the SP transition is reentrant in the vicinity of the critical concentration x_c. This is manifested by broadening of the SP dimerization superlattice peaks below the reentrance temperature, T_r, which may mean either the complete loss of the long-range SP order or the development of a short-range ordered component within the long-range ordered SP state. …
We investigate the electron spin resonance of the organic spin-Peierls chain (o-DMTTF)2X with X = Cl, Br and I. We describe the temperature dependence of the spin gap during the phase transition and quantify the dimerization parameter $δ$. At the lowest temperatures, the susceptibility is governed by defects in the spin dimerized chain. Such strongly correlated defects are the consequence of breaks in the translational symmetry of the chain. In the vicinity of the defects the spins are polarized antiferomagnetically forming a magnetic soliton: a spin 1 2 quasi-particle of size ruled by $δ$ pin…
Using the Bethe-ansatz density-functional theory, we study a one-dimensional Hubbard model of confined attractively interacting fermions in the presence of a uniformly distributed disorder. The strongly-correlated Luther-Emery nature of the attractive one-dimensional Hubbard model is fully taken into account as the reference system in the density-functional theory. The effects of the disorder are investigated on the atomic-density waves in the weak-to-intermediate attractive interaction and on the spin-singlet dimers of doubly occupied sites in the strongly attractive regime. It is found that …
The application of pressure can induce transitions between unconventional quantum phases in correlated materials. The inorganic compound TiOCl, composed of chains of S=1/2 Ti ions, is an ideal realization of a spin-Peierls system with a relatively simple unit cell. At ambient pressure, it is an insulator due to strong electronic interactions (a Mott insulator). Its resistivity shows a sudden decrease with increasing pressure, indicating a transition to a more metallic state which may coincide with the emergence of charge density wave order. Therefore, high pressure studies of the structure wit…
We report results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments in SrCu2(BO3)2, a quasi two-dimensional spin system with a singlet ground state. When magnetic field is applied along the c-axis, each of the quadrupole split Cu resonance lines splits further into four lines. The spin-echo intensity for some of the split lines oscillates against the separation time between the pai/2 and the pai rf-pulses. These phenomena are due to strong nuclear spin-spin coupling mediated by the electronic spin system, which exists only within a pair of nuclei. Thus the results provides direct evidence for th…
We report on the magnetic, thermodynamic and optical properties of the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets TiOCl and TiOBr, which have been discussed as spin-Peierls compounds. The observed deviations from canonical spin-Peierls behavior, e.g. the existence of two distinct phase transitions, have been attributed previously to strong orbital fluctuations. This can be ruled out by our optical data of the orbital excitations. We show that the frustration of the interchain interactions in the bilayer structure gives rise to incommensurate order with a subsequent lock-in transition to a …
We report quantum Monte Carlo (stochastic series expansion) results for the transition from a Mott insulator to a dimerized Peierls insulating state in a half-filled, 1D extended Hubbard model coupled to optical bond phonons. Using electron-electron (e-e) interaction parameters corresponding approximately to polyacetylene, we show that the Mott-Peierls transition occurs at a finite value of the electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling. We discuss several different criteria for detecting the transition and show that they give consistent results. We calculate the critical e-ph coupling as a function of t…
We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the spin-Peierls transition in NaV$_2$O$_5$ in the field range 16T-30T. The transition temperature exhibits a very weak variation with the field, suggesting a novel mechanism for the formation of the spin-Peierls state. We argue that a charge ordering transition accompanied by singlet formation is consistent with our observations.
We present single crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the S=1 dimerized quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The singlet-triplet dispersion reveals nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions between adjacent bilayers that compete against each other. Although the inter-bilayer exchange is comparable to the intra-bilayer exchange, this additional frustration reduces the effective coupling along the c-axis and leads to a quasi-two dimensional behavior. In addition, the obtained exchange values are able to reproduce the four critical …
Polarized far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopic measurements and FIR magneto-optical studies were performed on the inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3. An absorption line, which was found at 98 cm$^{-1}$ in the dimerized phase (D phase), was assigned to a folded phonon mode of B$_{3u}$ symmetry. The splitting of the folded mode into two components in the incommensurate phase (IC phase) has been observed for the first time. A new broad absorption centered at 63 cm$^{-1}$ was observed only in the ${\bf E}\parallel b$ axis polarization, which was assigned to a magnetic excitation from singlet grou…
We combine high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering with cluster calculations utilizing a recently derived effective magnetic scattering operator to analyze the polarization, excitation energy, and momentum dependent excitation spectrum of the low-dimensional quantum magnet TiOCl in the range expected for orbital and magnetic excitations (0 - 2.5 eV). Ti 3d orbital excitations yield complete information on the temperature-dependent crystal-field splitting. In the spin-Peierls phase we observe a dispersive two-spinon excitation and estimate the inter- and intra-dimer magnetic exchang…
We investigate the occurrence of singlet bound states in the Raman spectrum of dimerized spin 1/2 chains by Exact Diagonalization and Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques. We predict that several bulk $δ$-peaks could be observed in pure systems. Furthermore, we show that new low energy lines arise from non-magnetic impurity doping. These features are interpreted in terms of soliton-antisoliton and soliton-impurity bound states respectively. Energies and spectral weights associated with these bound states are sensitive to lattice relaxation effects. Our results are discussed in the c…
The magnetic field--driven transition in the spin-Peierls system CuGeO_3 associated with the closing of the spin gap is investigated numerically. The field dependence of the spin dynamical structure factor (seen by inelastic neutron scattering) and of the momentum dependent static susceptibility are calculated. In the dimerized phase (H<H_c), we suggest that the strong field dependence of the transverse susceptibility could be experimentally seen from the low temperature spin-echo relaxation rate 1/T_{2G} or the second moment of the NMR spectrum. Above H_c low energy spin excitations appear at…
The spinel, MgTi$_2$O$_4$, undergoes a transition into a dimerized state at low temperatures that is expected to be a spin singlet. However, no signature of a singlet-triplet transition has been discovered, in part due to the difficulty of predicting the energy of the transition from theory. We find that the dimers of MgTi$_2$O$_4$ can be described by a Heisenberg model with very small interactions between different dimers. Using high-accuracy first-principles quantum Monte Carlo combined with a novel model-fitting approach, we predict the singlet-triplet gap of these dimers to be 350(50) meV,…
We consider a one-dimensional commensurate Peierls insulator in the presence of spin-dependent sign-alternating potentials. In a continuum description, the latter supply the fermions with spin-dependent "relativistic" masses $m_{\uparrow,\downarrow}$. The ground-state phase diagram describes three gapped phases: the CDW and SDW-like band insulator phases sandwiched by a "mixed" phase in which the CDW and SDW superstructures coexist with a nonzero spontaneous dimerization (SD). The critical lines separating the massive phases belong to the Ising universality class. The Ising criticality is acco…
We study two identical fermions, or two hard-core bosons, in an infinite chain and coupled to phonons by interactions that modulate their hopping as described by the Peierls/Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We show that exchange of phonons generates effective nearest-neighbor repulsion between particles and also gives rise to interactions that move the pair as a whole. The two-polaron phase diagram exhibits two sharp transitions, leading to light dimers at strong coupling and the flattening of the dimer dispersion at some critical values of the parameters. This dimer (quasi)self-trapping occu…
Density matrix renormalization group methods are used to investigate the quantum phase diagram of a one-dimensional half-filled ionic Hubbard model with bond-charge attraction, which can be mapped from the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-type electron-phonon coupling at the antiadiabatic limit. A bond order wave (dimerized) phase which separates the band insulator from the Mott insulator always exists as long as electron-phonon coupling is present. This is qualitatively different from that at the adiabatic limit. Our results indicate that electron-electron interaction, ionic potential and quantum phonon …
Electron-phonon coupling plays a central role for time-dependent phenomena in condensed matter, for example in photo-excitation experiments. We use the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method to study the real-time evolution of charge and spin correlation functions of a Peierls insulator after a quench to a noninteracting Hamiltonian. This approach gives exact results, and fully takes into account quantum phonon effects without relying on a Hilbert space truncation. It is also free from a dynamical sign problem. The observed time dependence is compared to free-fermion time evolution startin…
The two-dimensional Jordan-Wigner transformation is used to investigate the zero temperature spin-Peierls transition for an anisotropic two-dimensional XY model in adiabatic limit. The phase diagram between the dimerized (D) state and uniform (U) state is shown in the parameter space of dimensionless interchain coupling $h$ $(=J_{\perp}/J)$ and spin-lattice coupling $η$. It is found that the spin-lattice coupling $η$ must exceed some critical value $η_c$ in order to reach the D phase for any finite $h$. The dependence of $η_c$ on $h$ is given by $-1/\ln h$ for $h\to 0$ and the transition betwe…
We present a Raman light scattering study of the two-dimensional quantum spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 and show that the magnetic excitation spectrum has a rich structure, including several well-defined bound state modes at low temperature, and a scattering continuum and quasielastic light scattering contributions at high temperature. The key to the understanding of the unique features of SrCu2(BO3)2 is the presence of strong interactions between well-localized triplet excitations in the network of orthogonal spin dimers realized in this compound. Based on our analysis of the Heisenberg model releva…
We have performed x-ray scattering measurements on single crystals of the doped spin-Peierls compound Ti(1-x)Sc(x)OCl (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03). These measurements reveal that the presence of non-magnetic dopants has a profound effect on the unconventional spin-Peierls behavior of this system, even at concentrations as low as 1%. Sc-doping suppresses commensurate fluctuations in the pseudogap and incommensurate spin-Peierls phases of TiOCl, and prevents the formation of a long-range ordered spin-Peierls state. Broad incommensurate scattering develops in the doped compounds near Tc2 ~ 93 K, and persi…
Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ru-$L_{2,3}$ edge we reveal that the Ru$^{4+}$ ions remain in the $S$=1 spin state across the rare 4d-orbital ordering transition and spin-gap formation. We find using local spin density approximation + Hubbard U (LSDA+U) band structure calculations that the crystal fields in the low temperature phase are not strong enough to stabilize the $S$=0 state. Instead, we identify a distinct orbital ordering with a significant anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic exchange couplings. We conclude that La$_{4}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{10}$ appears to be a novel material in wh…
Within the standard perturbative approach of Peierls, a charge-density wave is usually assumed to have a cosine shape of weak amplitude. In nonlinear physics, we know that waves can be deformed. What are the effects of the nonlinearities of the electron-lattice models in the physical properties of Peierls systems? We study in details a nonlinear discrete model, introduced by Brazovskii, Dzyaloshinskii and Krichever. First, we recall its exact analytical solution at integrable points. It is a cnoidal wave, with a continuous envelope, which may slide over the lattice potential at no energy cost,…
Motivated by the magnetic properties of the spin-chain compounds LiCuSbO$_4$$\equiv$LiSbCuO$_4$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$, we study the ground state of the Heisenberg chain with dimerized nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic (FM)($J_1, J_1^\prime<0$) and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2>0$) couplings. Using the density-matrix renormalization group technique and spin-wave theory we find a first-order transition between a fully-polarized FM and an incommensurate spiral state at $2α=β/(1+β)$, where $α$ is the frustration ratio $J_2/|J_1|$ and $β$ the degree of dimerization $J_1^\prime…
In a magnetic substance the gap in the Raman spectrum, Delta_R, is approximatively twice the value of the neutron scattering gap, Delta_S, if the the magnetic excitations (magnons) are only weakly interacting. But for CuGeO_3 the experimentally observed ratio Delta_R/Delta_S is approximatively 1.49-1.78, indicating attractive magnon-magnon interactions in the quasi-1D Spin-Peierls compound CuGe_3. We present numerical estimates for Delta_R/Delta_S from exact diagonalization studies for finite chains and find agreement with experiment for intermediate values of the frustration parameter alpha. …
Neutron spectroscopy has revealed a highly unusual magnetic structure and dynamics in YVO$_3$, an insulating pseudocubic perovskite that undergoes a series of temperature induced phase transitions between states with different spin and orbital ordering patterns. A good description of the neutron data is obtained by a theoretical analysis of the spin and orbital correlations of a realistic one-dimensional model. This leads to the tentative identification of one of the phases of YVO$_3$ with the ``orbital Peierls state'', a theoretically proposed many-body state comprised of orbital singlet bond…
The spin-Peierls transition at $T_{SP}$ of spin-$1/2$ chains with isotropic exchange interactions has previously been modeled as correlated for $T > T_{SP}$ and mean field for $T < T_{SP}$. We use correlated states throughout in the $J_1-J_2$ model with antiferromagnetic exchange $J_1$ and $J_2 = αJ_1$ between first and second neighbors, respectively, and variable frustration $0 \leq α\leq 0.50$. The thermodynamic limit is reached at high $T$ by exact diagonalization of short chains and at low $T$ by density matrix renormalization group calculations of progressively longer chains. In contrast …
We investigate magnetic properties of an $S$=1/2 quasi-one dimensional organic antiferromagnet, D-F$_{5}$PNN using magnetization measurements taken at temperatures as low as 0.5 K. Three distinct phases were observed consisting of uniform, dimerized (D), and incommensurate (I) spin structures in the magnetic field versus temperature plane, where a significant hysteresis appears between D-I transitions in the field scan measurements. A combination of magnon ($S$=1) and soliton ($S$=1/2) excitations have successfully reproduced the observed magnetic susceptibility. In addition, such excitations …
