Quark and gluon helicity flip generalized parton distributions (GPDs) address the transversity quark and gluon structure of the nucleon. In order to construct a theoretically consistent parametrization of these hadronic matrix elements, we work out the set of combinations of those GPDs suitable for the ${\rm SO}(3)$ partial wave (PW) expansion in the cross-channel. This universal result will help to build up a flexible parametrization of these important hadronic non-perturbative quantities, using for instance the approaches based on the conformal PW expansion of GPDs such as the Mellin-Barnes integral or the dual parametrization techniques.
We discuss the general properties of generalized parton distributions with helicity flip (transversity) for spin-1 hadrons in the leading twist case. Using a basic light cone convolution model, we show the deuteron helicity amplitudes containing quark helicity flip GPDs and comment on the role deuteron angular momentum plays in these.
Recent data for the ratio $R(Q)= QF_{2}(Q^{2})/F_{1}(Q^{2})$ shocked the community by disobeying expectations held for 50 years. We examine the status of perturbative QCD predictions for helicity-flip form factors. Contrary to common belief, we find there is no rule of hadron helicity conservation for form factors. Instead the analysis yields an inequality that the leading power of helicity-flip processes may equal or exceed the power of helicity conserving processes. Numerical calculations support the rule, and extend the result to the regime of laboratory momentum transfer $Q^{2}$. Quark orb…
We asses a role of the double helicity-flip amplitudes in small-angle elastic pp-scattering and obtain a new unitary bound for the double helicity-flip amplitude F_2 in elastic pp-scattering at small values of t on the basis of the U-matrix method of the s-channel unitarization.
Orbital angular momentum is crucial for the description of several process at large momentum transfer in the impulse approximation in perturbative QCD. We review the mechanism of independent scattering which makes violation of the helicity conservation rule possible at leading order - and without any need to flip a quark helicity - in exclusive hadron-hadron reactions. We argue that helicity flip form factors, which violate the factorization assumptions of conventional approaches and are classified as ``higher-twist," are nevertheless calculable to leading order in perturbative QCD when inform…
Generalized parton distributions with helicity flip are studied in the quark sector, within a simple version of the MIT bag model, assuming an SU(6) wave function for the proton target. In the framework under scrutiny it turns out that only the generalized transversity distribution, H_T^q, is non vanishing. For this quantity, the forward limit is properly recovered and numerical results are found to underestimate recent lattice data for its first moment. Positivity bounds recently proposed are fulfilled by the obtained distribution. The relevance of the analysis for the planning of measurement…
The helicity flip of a spin-${\textstyle \frac{1}{2}}$ Dirac particle interacting gravitationally with a scalar field is analyzed in the context of linearized quantum gravity. It is shown that massive fermions may have their helicity flipped by gravity, in opposition to massless fermions which preserve their helicity.
We consider the role of chirally odd wave functions in hard exclusive reactions. Such wave functions have the quarks oriented in the opposite helicity configuration from those assumed in the short-distance limit and are generally associated with non-zero orbital angular momentum. Calculations in the impulse approximation allow for non-zero helicity flip amplitudes while the conventional factorization prescription for exclusive processes does not. By introducing a new approach, we show how helicity flip form factors are nevertheless calculable in QCD.
The spin projection of a massive particle onto its direction of motion is called helicity (or "handedness"). It can therefore be positive or negative. When a particle's helicity changes from positive to negative (or vice-versa) due to its interaction with other particles or fields, we say there is a helicity flip. In this work we show that such helicity flip can be seen for an electron of $20 MeV$ of energy interacting with a charged scalar meson through the exchange of a virtual photon. This photon {\it does not} necessarily need to be Podolsky's proposed photon; in fact, it is independent of…
On the basis of the U-matrix method of the s-channel unitarization we obtain a new unitarity bound for the single-helicity-flip amplitude F_5 of elastic pp-scattering at small values of t
We show that for both quarks and gluons there are eight generalized parton distributions in the proton: four which conserve parton helicity and four which do not. We explain why time reversal invariance does not reduce this number from eight to six, as previously assumed in the literature.
We calculate the differential cross section $dσ/dt$ for the diffractive photoproduction process $γp \to ρp$ and compare to recent data extracted by the CMS collaboration from ultraperipheral proton-lead collisions. Our model is based on two-gluon exchange in the nonperturbative domain. We take into account both helicity conserving and often neglected helicity-flip amplitudes in the $γ\to V$ transition. The letter can contribute at finite $t$. The shape of the differential cross section as well as the role of helicity flip processes is strongly related to the dependence of the unintegrated gluo…
We discuss a role of the double helicity-flip amplitudes and derive new unitary bounds for these amplitudes in elastic $pp$-scattering at small values of $t$. We show that the usual assumption on the smallness of such amplidudes can be justified only in the shrinking with energy region of small $t$ values.
We identify quark and gluon helicity-flip distributions defined between nucleon states of unequal momenta. The evolution of these distributions with change of renormalization scale is calculated in the leading-logarithmic approximation. The helicity-flip gluon distributions do not mix with any quark distribution and are thus a unique signature of gluons in the nucleon. Their contribution to the generalized virtual Compton process is obtained both in the form of a factorization theorem and an operator product expansion. In deeply virtual Compton scattering, they can be probed through distinct a…
The helicity flip of a spin-1/2 Dirac fermion interacting with a torsion- field endowed with a pseudo-tensorial extension is analysed. Taking the torsion to be represented by a Kalb-Ramond field, we show that there is a finite amplitude for helicity flip for massive fermions. The lowest order contribution is proportional to the pseudo-tensor term.
We perform a systematic analysis on the off-forward matrix elements of the twist-two quark and gluon helicity-flip operators. By matching the allowed quantum numbers and their crossing channel counterparts (a method developed by Ji & Lebed), we systematically count the number of independent nucleon form factors in off-forward scattering of matrix elements of these quark and gluon spin-flip operators. In particular, we find that the numbers of independent nucleon form factors twist-2, helicity flip quark (gluon) operators are $2n-1$ ($2n-5$) if $n$ is odd, and $2n-2$ ($2n-6$) if $n$ is even, wi…
Soft rescattering in hard QCD processes may involve non-perturbative, chiral symmetry breaking interactions. We find that rescattering which changes the helicity of the struck quark gives rise to a leading twist single spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive DIS, the angular dependence of which is the same as that usually ascribed to the Collins effect. We argue that helicity-changing rescattering can contribute also to $k_\perp$-integrated parton distributions.
We consider hard electroproduction of mesons at twist-3 level and focus our attention on helicity flip amplitudes corresponding to the production of transversely polarized mesons by transverse photons. We demonstrate that helicity-flip amplitude for the transversely polarized particles are closely related to the contributions of the matrix elements of the tensor gluon operator which can serve as pure gluonic probe of the hadrons. Using standard factorisation approach and Wanzura-Wilczek approximation for the twist-3 matrix elements we find that such amplitudes do not have divergencies from the…
We present an initiatory study of quark helicity flip generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in n_f=2 lattice QCD, based on clover-improved Wilson fermions for a large number of coupling constants and pion masses. Quark helicity flip GPDs yield essential information on the transverse spin structure of the nucleon. In this work, we show first results on their lowest moments and dipole masses and study the corresponding chiral and continuum extrapolations.
We compute the leading probability for a gluon to flip helicity state upon traversing a background plane wave gauge field in pure Yang-Mills theory and QCD, with an arbitrary number of colours and flavours. This is a one-loop calculation in perturbative gauge theory around the gluonic plane wave background, which is treated without approximation (i.e., to all orders in the coupling). We introduce a background-dressed version of the spinor helicity formalism and use it to obtain simple formulae for the flip amplitude with pure external gluon polarizations. We also give in-depth examples for gau…
We show that in a supernova core the longitudinal photon (plasmon) has a space-like dispersion and Cerenkov absorption and emission of such photons is kinematically allowed. If the neutrino has a non-zero magnetic moment, then helicity flipping Cerenkov absorption of a plasmon $ν_L+γ\toν_R$ is the most efficient cooling mechanism of the supernova core, and this allows us to put a restrictive bound on the neutrino magnetic moment $μ_ν~<~0.7\times 10^{-13}μ_B$.
We apply worldline methods to the study of vacuum polarisation effects in plane wave backgrounds, in both scalar and spinor QED. We calculate helicity-flip probabilities to one loop order and treated exactly in the background field, and provide a toolkit of methods for use in investigations of higher-order processes. We also discuss the connections between the worldline, S-matrix, and lightfront approaches to vacuum polarisation effects.
We computed twist-4 part of the photon spin-flip amplitude in deeply virtual Compton scattering on a nucleon in the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation. We found a factorizable contribution, which arises from photon scattering on quarks with non-zero angular momentum along the collision axis. As the genuine twist-2 amplitude arises at the NLO, for moderate virtualities of the hard photon, $Q^2 \le 10$ GeV$^2$, kinematical twist-4 correction can give numerically important contribution to the photon helicity-flip amplitude.
Inclusive DIS with unpolarized beam exhibits a subtle dependence on the transverse target spin, arising from the interference of one-photon and two-photon exchange amplitudes in the cross section. We argue that this observable probes mainly the quark helicity-flip amplitudes induced by the non-perturbative vacuum structure of QCD (spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking). This conjecture is based on (a) the absence of significant Sudakov suppression of the helicity-flip process if soft gluon emission in the quark subprocess is limited by the chiral symmetry-breaking scale mu_chiral^2 >> Lambda_QC…
I review new results on s-channel helicity nonconservation (SCHNC) in diffractive DIS. I discuss how by virtue of unitarity diffractive DIS gives rise to spin structure functions which were believed to vanish at x << 1. These include tensor polarization of sea quarks in the deuteron, strong breaking of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation and demise of the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule.
We give a brief overview of the General Parton Distributions(GPDs), including their properties, connections to conventional quantities, and relationships to physical observables. We also perform a systematic analysis on the non-forward matrix elements of twist-two quark and gluon helicity-flip operators and explain their relationships to the GPDs. We systematically count the number of independent nucleon form factors in non-forward scattering (of matrix elements of these operators), by matching the allowed quantum numbers with their crossing channel counterparts and time reversal symmetry cons…
Taking into account that neutrinos are massive particles and that they are produced mainly as states of negative helicity, we show that the neutral and charged current interactions change these neutrinos into transversally polarized states. This implies a considerable reduction of the neutrino flux when propagating through ordinary matter (electrons, protons and neutrons). The same happens when neutrinos propagate through the sea of relic neutrinos if these neutrinos are degenerate fermions. However, in this case the change of helicity depends on the value of the neutrino--anti-neutrino asymme…
Vacuum birefringence is governed by the amplitude for a photon to flip helicity or polarisation state in an external field. Here we calculate the flip and non-flip amplitudes in arbitrary plane wave backgrounds, along with the induced spacetime-dependent refractive indices of the vacuum. We compare the behaviour of the amplitudes in the low energy and high energy regimes, and analyse the impact of pulse shape and energy. We also provide the first lightfront-QED derivation of the coefficients in the Heisenberg-Euler effective action.
In this work, we will evaluate the nucleon helicity flip form factor at the limit of large momentum transfer. Hereby, we will study the exchange of one and two virtual photons separately. For the calculation of the scattering amplitudes and nucleon transition probability matrix elements, we combine QCD perturbation theory with an expansion in nucleon distribution amplitudes. Using the combination of leading and sub-leading twist nucleon distribution amplitudes, one obtains the desired form factor. Using this technique, we will obtain a divergent result for the form factor. Nevertheless, the st…
We present a calculation of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the photon when the helicity of the initial photon is different from the final photon. We calculate the GPDs using overlaps of photon light-front wave functions (LFWFs) at leading order in electromagnetic coupling $α$ and zeroth order in the strong coupling $α_s$, when the momentum transfer is purely in the transverse direction. These involve a contribution of orbital angular momentum of two units in the LFWFs. We express these GPDs in the impact parameter space.
We assume that a massive Dirac neutrino is characteized by two phenomenological parameters, a magnetic moment, and a charge radius, and we calculate the cross-section of the scattering $e^+e^-\to ν\bar ν$ in a left-right symmetric model. We also analyze the angular distribution of the neutrino (antineutrino) with respect to the original direction of the electron (positron) to different state of helicity of the neutrino. We find that the favored directions for the neutrino (antineutrino) with respect to the electron (positron) is forward $(θ=0)$ and backward $(θ= π)$, and is not very probable i…
We study the helicity amplitudes describing the quasielastic production of vector mesons in deep inelastic scattering within the context of the model which we previously introduced to describe the ratio of longitudinal to transverse cross sections. We calculate here a full set of spin flip (and non-flip) amplitudes and naturally find a significant violation of s-channel helicity conservation. We present predictions for the 15 spin-density matrix elements which completely define the angular distributions and the helicity properties of the produced meson.
Certain momentum correlations in the production and subsequent decay of heavy fermion pairs in $e^+e^-$ collisions have increased sensitivity to CP-violating electric and ``weak" dipole form factors of the fermion in the presence of longitudinal polarization of the $e^+e^-$ beams. However, unless the polarizations of $e^+$ and $e^-$ are equal and opposite, collinear initial-state radiation accompanied by helicity flip results in a CP-invariant contribution to these and acts as a background, and must be calculated and subtracted in order to isolate the CP-violating contribution due to the dipol…
We study a new mechanism for hadronic helicity flip in high energy hard exclusive reactions. The mechanism proceeds in the limit of perfect chiral symmetry, namely without any need to flip a quark helicity. The fundamental feature of the new mechanism is the breaking of rotational symmetry of the hard collision by a scattering plane in processes involving independent quark scattering. We show that in the impulse approximation there is no evidence for of the helicity violating process as the energy or momentum transfer $Q^2$ is increased over the region 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. In the asympto…
Quark and gluon helicity flip generalized parton distributions (GPDs) encode the information on the nucleon structure in the transversity sector. In order to build a theoretically consistent phenomenological parametrization for these hadronic matrix element within the framework of the dual parametrization of GPDs (or with the equivalent approach of the SO(3) partial waves (PW) expansion with the Mellin-Barnes integral techniques) we establish the set of combinations of parton helicity flip GPDs suitable for the expansion in the cross channel SO(3) PWs.
We present a bound on the imaginary part of the single helicity-flip amplitude for spin 1/2-spin 1/2 scattering at small momentum transfer. The variational method of Lagrange multipliers is employed to optimize the single-flip amplitude using the values of the total cross section, the elastic cross section and diffraction slope as equality constraints in addition to the inequality constraints resulting from unitarity. Such bounds provide important information related to the determination of polarization of a proton beam. In the case of elastic proton collisions the analyzing power at small sca…
Using the quantum field theory methods, we calculate the helicity flip of an electron scattering off protons in dense matter of a neutron star. The influence of the electroweak interaction between electrons and background nucleons on the helicity flip is examined. We also derive the kinetic equation for the chiral imbalance. The derived kinetic equation is compared with the results obtained by other authors.
We compute the three-loop helicity amplitudes for $q\bar{q} \to gg$ and its crossed partonic channels, in massless QCD. Our analytical results provide a non-trivial check of the color quadrupole contribution to the infrared poles for external states in different color representations. At high energies, the $qg \to qg$ amplitude shows the predicted factorized form from Regge theory and confirms previous results for the gluon Regge trajectory extracted from $qq' \to qq'$ and $gg \to gg$ scattering.
The role of transversity or helicity-flip generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in leptoproduction of vector mesons is investigated within the framework of the handbag approach. The transversity GPDs in combination with twist-3 meson wave functions, occur in the amplitudes for transitions from a transversely polarized virtual photon to a longitudinal polarized vector meson. The importance of the transversity GPDs can be examined in some of the spin density matrix elements and in transverse target spin asymmetries. Using suitable parametrizations of both helicity-flip and non-flip GPDs, which…
The cross section for neutrino helicity spin-flip obtained from a new f(R, T) model of gravitation with dynamic torsion field introduced by one of the authors in [1], is phenomenologically analyzed. To this end, due to the logarithmical energy dependence of the cross section, the relation with the axion decay constant fa (Peccei-Quinn parameter) is used. Consequently the link with the phenomenological energy/mass window is found from the astrophysical and high energy viewpoints. The highest helicity spin-flip cross-sectional values presented in this work coincide with a recent estimation on th…

We discuss O(alpha_s) spin effects in e+ e- -> q qbar (g) for the polarization of single quarks and for spin-spin correlations of the final state quarks. Particular attention is paid to residual mass effects in the limit m_q -> 0 which are described in terms of universal helicity flip and helicity non-flip contributions.
Electrons emitted in the radiative decay mu^- -> e^- anti-nu_e nu_mu gamma have a significant probability of being right-handed, even in the limit m_e -> 0. Such ``wrong-helicity'' electrons, arising from helicity-flip bremsstrahlung, contribute an amount alpha/(4 pi) Gamma_0 to the muon decay width (Gamma_0 = G_F^2 m^5_mu/ (192 pi^3)). We use the helicity-flip splitting function D_hf (z) of Falk and Sehgal (Phys. Lett. B 325, 509 (1994)) to obtain the spectrum of the right-handed electrons and the photons that accompany them. For a minimum photon energy E_gamma = 10 MeV (20 MeV), approximatel…
We derive a full set, and determine the twist, of helicity amplitudes for diffractive production of light to heavy vector mesons in deep inelastic scattering. For large $Q^{2}$ all helicity amplitudes but the double-flip are calculable in perturbative QCD and are proportional to the gluon structure function of the proton at a similar hard scale. We find a substantial breaking of the $s$-channel helicity conservation which must persist also in real photoproduction.
In this paper we study the possibility of generalizing the classical photoabsorption ($γa \to b c$) sum rules, to processes $b c \to γa$ and crossed helicity amplitudes. In the first case, using detailed balance, the sum rule is written as $\int_{ν_{th}}^\infty {\frac{dν}ν} KΔσ_{Born} (ν)=0$ where $K$ is a kinematical constant which depends only on the mass of the particles and the center of mass energy. For other crossed helicity amplitudes, we show that there is a range of values of $s$ and $t$ for which the differential cross section for the process $γb \to a c$ or $a c \to γb$ in which the…
Naively, helicity flip amplitudes for fermions seem to vanish in the chiral limit of light-front QCD, which would make it nearly impossible to generate a small pion mass in this framework. Using a simple model, it is illustrated how a large helicity flip amplitude is generated dynamically by summing over an infinite number of Fock space components. While the kinetic mass is basically generated by a zero-mode induced counter-term, the vertex mass is generated dynamically by infinitesimally small, but nonzero, momenta. Implications for the renormalization of light-front Hamiltonians for fermions…
The standard model(SM) predicts only a $g_{V-A}$ coupling in $t \to W^+ b$ decay. However, if additional Lorentz structures exist, they can manifest themselves in high energy processes such as this via non-SM values of the helicity parameters describing $t \to W^+ b$. Plots and tables of the values of these helicity parameters are obtained for various coupling strengths. Three phase-type ambiguities are uncovered: $g_{V-A} + g_{S+P}$ with effective-mass scale $Λ_{S+P} \sim -35 GeV, g_{V-A} + g_{f_M + f_E}$ with $Λ_{f_M + f_E} \sim 53 GeV$, and an arbitrary sign-flip in the $b_L$ amplitudes $A_…
We calculate the contribution of the non-perturbative Pauli couplings in the quark-photon and quark-gluon vertices to the single-spin asymmetries (SSAs) in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We describe the nucleon using the spectator model with scalar and axial-vector diquarks. Both of the new couplings can cause the helicity flip of the struck quark. The helicity flip and the rescattering induced by the non-perturbative gluon exchange between the struck quark and diquark lead to the SSAs. Their azimuthal dependencies are the same as that usually ascribed to the Collins and Siv…
As Glauber has shown in 1959, the spin-flip phenomena caused by the conventional spin-orbit interaction do vanish in the scattering off heavy, strongly absorbing nuclei. On the other hand, the origin of the s-channel helicity nonconservation (SCHNC) in diffractive DIS is of the origin different from simple spin-orbit interaction, and here we demonstrate that SCHNC in vector meson production survives strong absorption effects in nuclear targets. The intranuclear absorption often discussed in terms of the saturation effects introduces a new large scale $Q_A^2$ into the calculation of diffractive…
Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with purely transverse momentum transfer can be interpreted as Fourier transforms of the distribution of partons in impact parameter space. The helicity-flip GPD $E(x,0,-\Dps)$ is related to the distortion of parton distribution functions in impact parameter space if the target is not a helicity eigenstate, but has some transverse polarization. This transverse distortion can be used to develop an intuitive explanation for various transverse single spin asymmetries.
Transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) appear as scalar functions in the decomposition of off-forward quark-quark and gluon-gluon correlators with a parton helicity flip. For a spin 1 hadron, we find 9 transversity GPDs for both quarks and gluons at leading twist 2. We study these twist-2 chiral odd quark transversity GPDs for the deuteron in a light cone convolution model, based on the impulse approximation, and using the lowest Fock-space state for the deuteron.
Generalized parton distributions of the nucleon are accessed via exclusive leptoproduction of the real photon. While earlier analytical considerations of phenomenological observables were restricted to twist-three accuracy, i.e., taking into account only terms suppressed by a single power of the hard scale, in the present study we revisit this differential cross section within the helicity formalism and restore power-suppressed effects stemming from the process kinematics exactly. We restrict ourselves to the phenomenologically important case of lepton scattering off a longitudinally polarized…
The large single spin asymmetries observed at high momentum fractions x_F and transverse momenta k_T in p^\uparrow p -> π(x_F,k_T)+X as well as in pp -> Λ^\uparrow(x_F,k_T)+X suggest that soft helicity flip processes are coherent with hard scattering. Such coherence can be maintained if x_F -> 1 as k_T -> \infty, while k_T^2(1-x_F) \sim Λ_QCD^2 stays fixed. The entire hadron wave function, rather than a single quark, then contributes to the scattering process. Analogous coherence effects have been seen experimentally in the Drell-Yan process at high x_F. We find that the p^\uparrow p -> π(x_F,…
