No vDVZ Discontinuity in Non-Fierz-Pauli Theories

In theories of massive gravity with Fierz-Pauli mass term at the linearized level, perturbative radially symmetric asymptotic solutions are singular in the zero mass limit, hence van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity. In this note, in the context of gravitational Higgs mechanism, we argue that in non-Fierz-Pauli theories, which non-perturbatively are unitary, perturbative radially symmetric asymptotic solutions have a smooth massless limit, hence no vDVZ discontinuity. Perturbative vDVZ discontinuity as an artifact of the Fierz-Pauli mass term becomes evident in the language of constrained gravity, which is the massless limit of gravitational Higgs mechanism.

New Formulation of Massive Spin Two Field Theory and Solution of vDVZ Discontinuity Problem

We present a new massive spin two field theory which has smooth massless limit based on BRS formalism. Our model contains a parameter a which extendes Fierz-Pauli's mass term. Although redundant scalar ghost exists in our model, physical degree of freedom is still five for the sake of existence of the Deser-Waldron type gauge symmetry. Origin of vDVZ discontiunity can be studied at the Fierz-Pauli limit a -> 1.

Lorentz-violating graviton masses: getting around ghosts, low strong coupling scale and VDVZ discontinuity

A theory with the action combining the Einstein--Hilbert term and graviton mass terms violating Lorentz invariance is considered at linearized level about Minkowskian background. Effective Lagrangian from Higher Curvature Terms: Absence of vDVZ Discontinuity in AdS Space

We argue that the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity arising in the $M^2 \to 0$ limit of the massive graviton through an explicit Pauli-Fierz mass term could be absent in anti de Sitter space. This is possible if the graviton can acquire mass spontaneously from the higher curvature terms or/and the massless limit $M^2\to 0$ is attained faster than the cosmological constant $Λ\to 0$. We discuss the effects of higher-curvature couplings and of an explicit cosmological term ($Λ$) on stability of such continuity and of massive excitations.

On the vDVZ discontinuity in massive conformal gravity

By taking the massless limit of linearized massive conformal gravity coupled to a source, we show that the theory is free from the vDVZ discontinuity. This result is confirmed when we take the massless limit of the gravitational potential of the theory, which is shown to be finite at the origin.

Fully Covariant Van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov Discontinuity, and Absence Thereof

In both old and recent literature, it has been argued that the celebrated van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity of massive gravity is an artifact due to linearization of the true equations of motion. In this letter, we investigate that claim. First, we exhibit an explicit -albeit somewhat arbitrary- fully covariant set of equations of motion that, upon linearization, reduce to the standard Pauli-Fierz equations. Renormalizability, vDVZ discontinuity and Newtonian singularity in higher-derivative gravity

It was proposed that if a higher-derivative gravity is renormalizable, it implies necessarily a finite Newtonian potential at the origin, but the reverse of this statement is not true. Here we show that the reverse is true when taking into account the vDVZ discontinuity which states that the theory obtained from massive one by taking zero mass limit is not equivalent to the theory obtained in the zero mass case. Dynamical systems analysis of the cubic galileon beyond the exponential potential and the cosmological analogue of the vDVZ discontinuity

In this paper we generalize the dynamical systems analysis of the cubic galileon model previously investigated in \cite{rtgui} by including self-interaction potentials beyond the exponential one. Constrained Perturbative Expansion of the DGP Model

We address the vDVZ discontinuity of the 5D DGP model which consists of a 3-brane residing in a flat, infinite-volume bulk. Following a suggestion by Gabadadze [hep-th/0403161], we implement a constrained perturbative expansion parametrized by brane gauge parameters. We explore the parameter space and show that the DGP solution exhibiting the vDVZ discontinuity corresponds to a set of measure zero.

Cosmological perturbations of brane-induced gravity and the vDVZ discontinuity on FLRW space-times

We investigate the cosmological perturbations of the brane-induced (Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati) model which exhibits a van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity when linearized over a Minkowski background. Critical gravity as van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity in anti de Sitter space

We consider critical gravity as van Dam-Vletman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity in anti de Sitter space. For this purpose, we introduce the higher curvature gravity. This discontinuity can be confirmed by calculating the residues of relevant poles explicitly. For the non-critical gravity of $0<m_2^2<-2Λ/3$, the scalar residue of a massive pole is given by 2/3 when taking the $Λ\to 0$ limit first and then the $m^2_2 \to 0$ limit. Gravitational radiation from binary systems in massive graviton theories

Theories with massive gravitons have peculiarity called the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity in that the massive theory propagator does not go to the massless graviton propagator in the zero graviton mass limit. Cosmic Strings in a Braneworld Theory with Metastable Gravitons

If the graviton possesses an arbitrarily small (but nonvanishing) mass, perturbation theory implies that cosmic strings have a nonzero Newtonian potential. Classical Analysis of the van Dam - Veltman Discontinuity

We consider the classical theory of a gravitational field with spin 2 and non-vanishing (Pauli-Fierz) mass in flat spacetime, coupled to electromagnetism and point particles. We establish the law of light propagation and calculate the amount of deflection in the background of a spherically symmetric gravitational field. Effective Field Theory for Massive Gravitons and Gravity in Theory Space

We introduce a technique for restoring general coordinate invariance into theories where it is explicitly broken. This is the analog for gravity of the Callan-Coleman-Wess-Zumino formalism for gauge theories. We use this to elucidate the properties of interacting massless and massive gravitons.
