The optical gyrotropy noise of a high-finesse semiconductor Bragg microcavity with an embedded quantum well (QW) is studied at different detunings of the photon mode and the QW exciton resonances. A strong suppression of the noise magnitude for the photon mode frequencies lying above exciton resonances is found. We show that such a critical behavior of the observed optical noise power is specific of asymmetric Fabry-Perot resonators. As follows from our analysis, at a certain level of intracavity loss, the reflectivity of the asymmetric resonator vanishes, while the polarimetric sensitivity to the gyrotropy changes dramatically when moving across the critical point. The results of model calculations are in a good agreement with our experimental data on the spin noise in a single-quantum-well microcavity and are confirmed also by the spectra of the photo-induced Kerr rotation in the pump-probe experiments.
Weyl semimetals possess unique electrodynamic properties due to a combination of strongly anisotropic and gyrotropic bulk conductivity, surface conductivity, and surface dipole layer. We explore the potential of popular tip-enhanced optical spectroscopy techniques for studies of bulk and surface topological electron states in these materials. Anomalous dispersion, extreme anisotropy, and the optical Hall effect for surface polaritons launched by a nanotip provides information about Weyl node position and separation in the Brillouin zone, the value of the Fermi momentum, and the matrix elements…
The single scattering theory is applied to spin noise spectroscopy (SNS). The case of two Gaussian probe beams tilted with respect to each other is analysed. It is shown that SNS signal in this case carry information about spatial correlations of studied gyrotropic medium.
In the presence of Rashba-Dresselhaus coupling, strong spin-orbit interactions in liquid crystal optical cavities result in a distinctive spin-split entangled dispersion. Spin coherence between such modes give rise to an optical persistent-spin-helix. In this letter, we introduce optical gain in such a system, by dispersing a molecular dye in a liquid-crystal microcavity. We demonstrate both lasing in the Rashba-Dresselhaus regime and the emergence of an optical persistent spin helix.
We present a microcavity structure with a shifted photonic stop-band to enable efficient non-resonant injection of a polariton condensate with spectrally broad femtosecond pulses. The concept is demonstrated theoretically and confirmed experimentally for a planar GaAs/AlGaAs multilayer heterostructure pumped with ultrashort near-infrared pulses while photoluminescence is collected to monitor the optically injected polariton density. As the excitation wavelength is scanned, a regime of polariton condensation can be reached in our structure at a consistently lower fluence threshold than in a sta…
We report the observation of macroscopic harmonic states in an optically induced confinement in a highly photoexcited semiconductor microcavity at room temperature. The spatially photomodulated refractive index changes result in the visualization of harmonic states in a micrometer-scale optical potential at quantized energies up to 4 meV even in the weak-coupling plasma limit. We characterize the time evolution of the harmonic states directly from the consequent pulse radiation and identify sequential multiple $\sim$10 ps pulse lasing with different emitting angles and frequencies.
We theoretically investigate optical bistability, mechanically induced absorption (MIA) and Fano resonance of a hybrid system comprising of a single quantum dot (QD) embedded in a solid state microcavity interacting with the quantized cavity mode and the deformation potential associated with the lattice vibration. We find that the bistability can be tuned by the QD-cavity mode coupling. We further show that the normalized power transmission displays anomalous dispersion indicating that the system can be used to generate slow light. We also demonstrate the possibility of using the system as all…
We studied optical response of microcavity non-equilibrium exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate with saturable nonlinearity under simultaneous resonant and non-resonant pumping. We demonstrated the emergence of multistabile behavior due to the satutration of the excitonic absorbtion. Stable periodic Rabi- type oscillations of the excitonic and photonic condensate components in the regime of the stationary pump and their transition to the chaotic dynamics through the cascade of Hopf bifurcations by tuning of the electrical pump are revealed.

Semiconductor quantum-dot cavity systems are promising sources for solid-state based on-demand generation of single photons for quantum communication. Commonly, the spectral characteristics of the emitted single photon are fixed by system properties such as electronic transition energies and spectral properties of the cavity. In the present work we study single-photon generation from the quantum-dot biexciton through a partly stimulated non-degenerate two-photon emission. We show that frequency and linewidth of the single photon can be fully controlled by the stimulating laser pulse, ultimatel…
We explore the tunneling transport properties of a quantum dot embedded in an optical microcavity and coupled to a semiconductor-superconductor one-dimensional nanowire (Majorana nanowire) hosting Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at their edges. Conductance profiles reveal that strong light-matter coupling can be employed to distinguish between the cases of highly nonlocal MZMs, overlapped MZMs and MZMs with less degree of nonlocal feature. Moreover, we show that it is possible to access the degree of Majorana nonlocality (topological quality factor) by changing the dot spectrum through photon-induc…
We study tunable polaritons in monolayers of silicene, germanene, and stanene (Xenes) via an external electric field in an open optical microcavity whose length can be adjusted. An external electric field applied perpendicular to the plane of the Xene monolayer simultaneously changes the band gap and the exciton binding energy, while the variable length of the open microcavity allows one to keep the exciton and cavity photon modes in resonance. First, the Schrödinger equation for an electron and hole in an Xene monolayer is solved, yielding the eigenergies and eigenfunctions of the exciton as …
We theoretically explore optical bistability for possible signature of all optical switching and their performance in a hybrid quantum optomechanical system comprising of two semiconductor microcavity coupled optically. One of the cavity is driven by an external optical pump laser while the second cavity which contains a quantum dot is indirectly driven by light transmitted from the first cavity. The generated bistable behavior due to optomechanical nonlinearity shows a typical optical switching behavior and it can be controlled by changing the laser power, QD cavity coupling, rocking paramete…
Localized-surface plasmon resonance is of importance in both fundamental and applied physics for the subwavelength confinement of optical field, but realization of quantum coherent processes is confronted with challenges due to strong dissipation. Here we propose to engineer the electromagnetic environment of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) using optical microcavities. An analytical quantum model is built to describe the MNP-microcavity interaction, revealing the significantly enhanced dipolar radiation and consequentially reduced Ohmic dissipation of the plasmonic modes. As a result, when inter…
The relativistic charge carriers in monolayer graphene can be manipulated in manners akin to conventional optics (electron-optics): angle-dependent Klein tunneling collimates an electron beam (analogous to a laser), while a Veselago refraction process focuses it (analogous to an optical lens). Both processes have been previously investigated, but the collimation and focusing efficiency have been reported to be relatively low even in state-of-the-art ballistic pn-junction devices. These limitations prevented the realization of more advanced quantum devices based on electron-optical interference…
By considering driven diffusive dynamics of exciton polaritons in an optical microcavity with an embedded molybdenum disulfide monolayer, we determine experimentally relevant range of parameters at which room-temperature superfuidity can be observed. It is shown that the superfluid transitions occurs in a trapped polariton gas at laser pumping power $P>600$ mW and and trapping potential strength $k > 50$ eV/cm$^2$. We also propose a simple analytic model that provides a useful estimate for the polariton gas density, which enables one to determine the conditions for observation of room temperat…
We theoretically investigate the nonlinear effects in a hybrid quantum optomechanical system consisting of two optically coupled semiconductor microcavities containing a quantum dot and a Kerr nonlinear substrate. The steady state behavior of the mean intracavity optical field demonstrates that the system can be used as an all optical switch. We further investigate the spectrum of small fluctuations in the mechanical displacement of the movable distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) and observe that normal mode splitting (NMS) takes place for high Kerr nonlinearity and pump power. In addition, we h…
Based on the studies of propagation of an exciton-polariton condensate in a patterned optical microcavity with an embedded graphene layer, we propose a design of a Y-shaped electrically-controlled optical switch. The polaritons are driven by a time-independent force due to the microcavity wedge shape and by a time-dependent drag force owing to the interaction of excitons in graphene and the electric current running in a neighboring quantum well. It is demonstrated that one can control the polariton flow direction by changing the direction of the electric current. The simulations also show that…
We study the polarization optical properties of microcavities with embedded (110)-oriented quantum wells. The spin dynamics of exciton polaritons in such structures is governed by the interplay of the spin-orbit splitting of exciton states, which is odd in the in-plane momentum, and the longitudinal-transverse splitting of cavity modes, which is even in the momentum. We demonstrate the generation of polariton spin currents by linearly polarized optical pump and analyze the arising polariton spin textures in the cavity plane. Tuning the excitation spot size, which controls the polariton distrib…
In this paper we introduce and analyze a new system design for quantum-dot-based qubits that simultaneously supports scalable one-qubit and two-qubit gates, and single-shot qubit measurement. All three key processes (one-qubit gates, two-qubit gates, and qubit measurement) rely on the interaction between the electron in each quantum dot and exciton-polaritons formed in a quantum well situated near the quantum dots. A key novel feature of our proposed system is the use of polariton traps, which we show enhances the quantum-dot--quantum-well interaction by a factor of 10 and consequently results…
The future of quantum communication systems and quantum networks heavily rely on the ability to fabricate and coherently control the conversion of photons between different modes based on a solid-state plateform. In this work, we propose and theoretically investigate a scheme to optomechanically control coherent mode conversion of optical photons by utilizing two optically coupled hybrid semiconductor microcavities containing a quantum dot (QD). One of the microcavity is pumped by an external laser and the second cavity is driven by light emitted by the QD that is embedded in the interface sep…
Recently reported optical nuclear orientation in the $n$-doped GaAs microcavity under pumping in nominal transparency region of the crystal [Appl. Phys. Lett. $\mathbf{106}$, 242405 (2015)] has arisen a number of questions, the main of them concerning mechanisms of angular momentum transfer from the light to the nuclear spin system and the nature of the light-related magnetic fields accompanying the optical nuclear polarization. In this paper, we use the spin noise spectroscopy for magnetometric purposes, particularly, to study effective fields acting upon electron spin system of an $n$-GaAs l…
Polariton emission from optical cavities integrated with various luminophores has been extensively studied recently due to the wide variety of possible applications in photonics, particularly promising in terms of fabrication of low-threshold sources of coherent emission. Tuneable microcavities allow extensive investigation of the photophysical properties of matter placed inside the cavity by deterministically changing the coupling strength and controllable switching from weak to strong and ultra-strong coupling regimes. Here we demonstrate room temperature strong coupling of exciton transitio…
