We use the Ramsey separated oscillatory fields (SOF) technique in a $400^\circ$C thermal beam of Yb atoms to measure the Larmor precession frequency with high precision. For the experiment, we use the strongly-allowed ${^1S_0} \rightarrow {^1P_1}$ transition at $399$ nm, and choose the odd isotope $^{171}$Yb with nuclear spin $I=1/2$, so that the ground state has only two magnetic sublevels $m_F = \pm 1/2$. With a magnetic field of $22.2$ G and a separation of about $400$ mm between the oscillatory fields, the central Ramsey fringe is at $16.64$ kHz and has a width of $350$ Hz. The technique can be readily adapted to a cold atomic beam, and should be useful in experiments searching for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) in atoms.
We evaluate the performance and phase diffusion of trapped $^{87}$Rb atoms in an atom-chip sensor with Ramsey interferometry and Hahn's spin echo in the time and phase domains. We trace out how the phase uncertainty of interference fringes grows with time. The phase-domain spin echo enables us to attain many-second-long phase diffusion with a low-cost local oscillator that otherwise seems unrealistic to obtain with such an oscillator. In the Ramsey experiment we record interference fringes with contrast decaying in $12$ s, and with a frequency uncertainty of $80$ mHz corresponding to the depha…
We report Ramsey spectroscopy on the clock states of individual Cs impurities immersed in an ultracold Rb bath. We record both the interaction-driven phase evolution and the decay of fringe contrast of the Ramsey interference signal to obtain information about bath density or temperature nondestructively. The Ramsey fringe is modified by a differential shift of the collisional energy when the two Cs states superposed interact with the Rb bath. This differential shift is directly affected by the mean gas density and the details of the Rb-Cs interspecies scattering length, affecting the phase ev…

Ramsey spectroscopy via coherent population trapping (CPT) is essential in precision measurements. The conventional CPT-Ramsey fringes contain numbers of almost identical oscillations and so that it is difficult to identify the central fringe. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a temporal spinwave Fabry-Pérot interferometry via double-$Λ$ CPT of laser-cooled $^{87}$Rb atoms. Due to the constructive interference of temporal spinwaves, the transmission spectrum appears as a comb of equidistant peaks in frequency domain and thus the central Ramsey fringe can be easily identified. From the optica…
We describe a collective state atomic clock with Ramsey fringes narrowed by a factor of $\sqrt{N}$ compared to a conventional clock, N being the number of non-interacting atoms, without violating the uncertainty relation. This narrowing is explained as being due to interferences among the collective states, representing an effective $\sqrt{N}$ fold increase in the clock frequency, without entanglement. The detection process, which measures a collective state, can be used to increase the quantum efficiency of detection significantly, yielding a net improvement in stability by as much as a facto…
We demonstrate Ramsey-Bordé (RB) atom interferometry for high performance laser stabilization with fractional frequency instability $<2 \times 10^{-16}$ for timescales between 10 and 1000s. The RB spectroscopy laser interrogates two counterpropagating $^{40}$Ca beams on the $^1$S$_0$ -- $^3$P$_1$ transition at 657 nm, yielding 1.6 kHz linewidth interference fringes. Fluorescence detection of the excited state population is performed on the (4s4p) $^3$P$_1$ -- (4p$^2$) $^3$P$_0$ transition at 431 nm. Minimal thermal shielding and no vibration isolation are used. These stability results surpass …
Many powerful imaging techniques for cold atoms are based on determining the optical density by comparing a beam image having passed through the atom cloud to a reference image taken under similar conditions with no atoms. In practice the beam profile typically contains interference fringes whose phase is not stable between camera exposures. To reduce the error of these fringes in the computed optical density, an algorithm based on principle component analysis (PCA) is often employed. However, PCA is general purpose and not tailored to the specific case of interference fringes. Here we demonst…
We investigate a dual-channel arrangement for electromagnetically-induced transparency in a vacuum Rb vapor cell, and report the observation of a transient spectral feature due to the atoms traversing both beams while preserving their ground-state spin coherence. Despite a relatively small fraction of atoms participating in this process, their contribution to the overall lineshape is not negligible. By adjusting the path difference between the two optical beams, the differential intensity measurement can produce an error signal for the microwave frequency stabilization as strong as a single-ch…
We demonstrate a collectively-encoded qubit based on a single Rydberg excitation stored in an ensemble of $N$ entangled atoms. Qubit rotations are performed by applying microwave fields that drive excitations between Rydberg states. Coherent read-out is performed by mapping the excitation into a single photon. Ramsey interferometry is used to probe the coherence of the qubit, and to test the robustness to external perturbations. We show that qubit coherence is preserved even as we lose atoms from the polariton mode, preserving Ramsey fringe visibility. We show that dephasing due to electric fi…
We present an observation of zero to $π$ phase flips induced by Rabi oscillation in an unbalanced Ramsey atom interferometer. The phase shift and visibility are experimentally investigated by modulating either the polarization or duration of Raman lasers, and they are well explained by a theoretical model. In an atom interferometer, the $π$-phase flips are caused not only by the sign of Rabi frequency but also by the Rabi oscillation. Considering the $π$-phase flips, we propose the composite-light-pulse sequences for realizing the large-momentum-transfer beam splitter and mirror, which have th…
We describe a collective state atomic interferometer (COSAIN) with the signal fringe as a function of phase-difference or rotation narrowed by $\sqrt{N}$ compared to a conventional interferometer - $N$ being the number of atoms - without entanglement. This effect arises from the interferences among collective states, and is a manifestation of interference at a Compton frequency of ten nonillion Hz, or a de Broglie wavelength of ten attometer, for $N=10^6$ and $v = 300 m/s$. The population of the collective state of interest is detected by a null measurement scheme, in which an event correspond…
We present a compact, two-stage atomic beam source that produces a continuous, narrow, collimated and high-flux beam of rubidium atoms with sub-Doppler temperatures in three dimensions, which features very low emission of near-resonance fluorescence along the atomic trajectory. The atom beam source originates in a pushed two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D$^+$ MOT) feeding a slightly off-axis three-dimensional moving optical molasses stage that continuously cools and redirects the atom beam. The capture velocity of the moving optical molasses is deliberately chosen to be low, $\sim 3$ m/s…
We present the first demonstration of an inertially sensitive atomic interferometer based on a continuous, rather than pulsed, atomic beam at sub-Doppler temperatures in three dimensions. We demonstrate 30\% fringe contrast in continuous, inertially sensitive interference fringes at interrogation time $T=6.7~\mathrm{ms}$ and a short-term phase measurement noise of $530~\mathrm{μrad /\sqrt{Hz}}$ as inferred from interference measurements. Atoms are delivered to the interferometer by a cold-rubidium source that produces a high flux of atoms at temperature $\leq15~\mathrmμ K$ in three dimensions …
