Measurements of the HI 21-cm power spectra from the reionization epoch will be influenced by the evolution of the signal along the line-of-sight direction of any observed volume. We use numerical as well as semi-numerical simulations of reionization in a cubic volume of 607 Mpc across to study this so-called light cone effect on the HI 21-cm power spectrum. We find that the light cone effect has the largest impact at two different stages of reionization: one when reionization is $\sim 20\%$ and other when it is $\sim 80\%$ completed. We find a factor of $\sim 4$ amplification of the power spectrum at the largest scale available in our simulations. We do not find any significant anisotropy in the 21-cm power spectrum due to the light cone effect. We argue that for the power spectrum to become anisotropic, the light cone effect would have to make the ionized bubbles significantly elongated or compressed along the line-of-sight, which would require extreme reionization scenarios. We also calculate the two-point correlation functions parallel and perpendicular to the line-of-sight and find them to differ. Finally, we calculate an optimum frequency bandwidth below which the light cone effect can be neglected when extracting power spectra from observations. We find that if one is willing to accept a $10 \%$ error due to the light cone effect, the optimum frequency bandwidth for $k= 0.056 \, \rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ is $\sim 7.5$ MHz. For $k = 0.15$ and $0.41 \, \rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ the optimum bandwidth is $\sim 11$ and $\sim 16$ MHz respectively.
We present constraints on the patchy reionization by measuring the trispectrum of the Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. The patchy reionization leads to anisotropies in the CMB optical depth, and the statistics of the observed CMB anisotropies is altered. We estimate the trispectrum of the CMB temperature anisotropies to constrain spatial variation of the optical depth. We show that the measured trispectrum is consistent with that from the standard lensed CMB simulation at $2σ$. While no evidence of the patchy reionization is found in the Planck 2015 tempe…
The epoch of first star formation and the state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at that time are not directly observable with current telescopes. The radiation from those early sources is now part of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) and, as these sources ionize the gas around them, the IGM plasma would produce faint temperature anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) via the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (TSZ) effect. While these TSZ anisotropies are too faint to be detected, we show that the cross-correlation of maps of source-subtracted CIB fluctuations from {\it Euclid}, wit…
The accurate understanding of the ionization history of the Universe plays a fundamental role in modern cosmology. It includes a phase of cosmological reionization after the standard recombination epoch, possibly associated to the early stages of structure and star formation. While the simple "τ-parametrization" of the reionization process and, in particular, of its imprints on the CMB anisotropy likely represents a sufficiently accurate modelling for the interpretation of current CMB data, a great attention has been recently posed on the accurate computation of the reionization signatures in …
We present an approximate, analytical calculation of the reionized spectra $C_l^{XX}$ of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) anisotropies and polarizations generated by relic gravitational waves (RGWs). Three simple models of reionization are explored, whose visibility functions are fitted by gaussian type of functions as approximations. We have derived the analytical polarization $β_l$ and temperature anisotropies $α_l$, both consisting of two terms proportional to RGWs at the decoupling and at the reionization as well. The explicit dependence of $β_l$ and $α_l$ upon the reionization …
A fraction of the extragalactic near-infrared (near-IR) background light involves redshifted photons from the ultraviolet (UV) emission from galaxies present during reionization at redshifts above 6. The absolute intensity and the anisotropies of the near-IR background provide an observational probe of the first-light galaxies and their spatial distribution. We estimate the extragalactic background light intensity during reionization by accounting for the stellar and nebular emission from first-light galaxies. We require the UV photon density from these galaxies to generate a reionization hist…
We present predictions for the 21 cm brightness temperature power spectrum during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). We discuss the implications of the "light cone" effect, which incorporates evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction and 21 cm brightness temperature along the line of sight. Using a novel method calibrated against radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, we model the neutral hydrogen density field and 21 cm signal in large volumes ($L = 2$ Gpc/$h$). The inclusion of the light cone effect leads to a relative decrease of about 50% in the 21 cm power spectrum on all scales. We also find…
The linear perturbation theory of inhomogeneous reionization (LPTR) has been developed as an analytical tool for predicting the global ionized fraction and large-scale power spectrum of ionized density fluctuations during reionization. In the original formulation of the LPTR, the ionization balance and radiative transfer equations are linearized and solved in Fourier space. However, the LPTR's approximation to the full solution of the radiative transfer equation is not straightforward to interpret, since the latter is most intuitively conceptualized in position space. To bridge the gap between…
Measurements of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect from instruments such as the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) will soon put improved constraints on reionization. Popular models assume that UV photons alone are responsible for reionization of the intergalactic medium. We explore the effects of a significant contribution of X-rays to reionization on the kSZ signal. Because X-rays have a large mean free path through the neutral intergalactic medium, they introduce partial ionization in between the sharp-edged bubbles created by UV photons. This smoo…
The power spectrum of reconstructed cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing maps is a powerful tool for constraints on cosmological parameters like the sum of the neutrino masses and the dark energy equation of state. One possible complication is the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect, due to the scattering of CMB photons by moving electrons, which can bias the reconstruction of the CMB lensing power spectrum through both kSZ-lensing correlations and the non-Gaussianity of the kSZ temperature anisotropies. We investigate for the first time the bias to CMB lensing reconstruction from t…
We study the spherically averaged bispectrum of the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). This metric provides a quantitative measurement of the level of non-Gaussianity of the signal which is expected to be high. We focus on the impact of the light-cone effect on the bispectrum and its detectability with the future SKA-Low telescope. Our investigation is based on a single reionization light-cone model and an ensemble of 50 realisations of the 21-cm signal to estimate the cosmic variance errors. We calculate the bispectrum with a new, optimised direct estimation method, DviSukta w…
CII line intensity mapping (LIM) is a potential technique to probe the early galaxies from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Several experiments e.g. CONCERTO, TIME, CCAT-p are underway to map the CII LIM signal fluctuations from the EoR, enabling us to estimate the CII power-spectrum and CII$\times$21-cm cross-power spectrum. Observed LIM signal will have its time evolution embedded in it along the Line of Sight (LoS) due to the finite travel time of the signal from its origin to the observer. We have investigated this so-called light-cone effect on the observed statistics of our semi-numerica…
Accurate simulations of the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization require the generation of maps at specific frequencies given the values of astrophysical and cosmological parameters. The peculiar velocities of the hydrogen atoms producing the 21-cm radiation result in a shift in the observed frequency of the 21-cm radiation and changes the amplitude of the signal itself. This is not an effect we can remove but instead needs to be accurately modelled to ensure we infer the correct physical parameters from an observation. We describe the full calculation of the distortion of the 21-cm sig…
Observations of redshifted 21-cm radiation from neutral hydrogen during the epoch of reionization (EoR) are considered to constitute the most promising tool to probe that epoch. One of the major goals of the first generation of low frequency radio telescopes is to measure the 3D 21-cm power spectrum. However, the 21-cm signal could evolve substantially along the line of sight (LOS) direction of an observed 3D volume, since the received signal from different planes transverse to the LOS originated from different look-back times and could therefore be statistically different. Using numerical sim…
It has been several years since the first detection of Gunn-Peterson troughs in the z > 6 Ly-alpha forest and since the first measurement of the Thomson scattering optical depth through reionization from the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Present day CMB measurements provide a significant constraint on the mean redshift of reionization, and the Ly-alpha forest provides a lower bound on the redshift at which reionization ended. However, no observation has provided definitive information on the duration and morphology of this process. This article is intended as a short review on the most pr…
Using a suite of detailed numerical simulations we estimate the level of anisotropy generated by the time evolution along the light cone of the 21cm signal from the epoch of reionization. Our simulations include the physics necessary to model the signal during both the late emission regime and the early absorption regime, namely X-ray and Lyman-band 3D radiative transfer in addition to the usual dynamics and ionizing UV transfer. The signal is analysed using correlation functions perpendicular and parallel to the line of sight (LOS). We reproduce general findings from previous theoretical stud…
The line of sight direction in the redshifted 21-cm signal coming from the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization is quite unique in many ways compared to any other cosmological signal. Different unique effects, such as the evolution history of the signal, non-linear peculiar velocities of the matter etc will imprint their signature along the line of sight axis of the observed signal. One of the major goals of the future SKA-LOW radio interferometer is to observe the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization through this 21-cm signal. It is thus important to understand how these various eff…
Tomographic intensity mapping of the HI using the redshifted 21 cm observations opens up a new window towards our understanding of cosmological background evolution and structure formation. This is a key science goal of several upcoming radio telescopes including the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). In this article we focus on the post-reionization signal and investigate the of cross correlating the 21 cm signal with other tracers of the large scale structure. We consider the cross-correlation of the post-reionization 21 cm signal with the Lyman-alpha forest, Lyman-break galaxies and late time an…
We investigate the effect of patchy reionization on the cosmic microwave background temperature. An anisotropic optical depth tau (theta) alters the TT power spectrum on small scales l > 2000. We make use of the correlation between the matter density and the reionization redshift fields to construct full sky maps of tau(theta). Patchy reionization transfers CMB power from large scales to small scales, resulting in a non-zero cross correlation between large and small angular scales. We show that the patchy tau correlator is sensitive to small root mean square values tau_rms ~ 0.003 seen in our …
The search for primordial gravitational waves through the $B$-mode polarization pattern in the CMB is one of the major goals of current and future CMB experiments. Besides foregrounds, a potential hurdle in this search is the anisotropic secondary $B$-mode polarization generated by the scattering of CMB photons off free electrons produced during patchy cosmological reionization. Robust predictions of these secondary anisotropies are challenging because of uncertainties in the reionization history. In this paper, we revise estimates of the reionization-induced $B$-mode signal by incorporating r…
We develop a theoretical framework to describe the cosmological observables on the past light cone such as the luminosity distance, weak lensing, galaxy clustering, and the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. We consider that all the cosmological observables include not only the background quantity, but also the perturbation quantity, and they are subject to cosmic variance, which sets the fundamental limits on the cosmological information that can be derived from such observables, even in an idealized survey with an infinite number of observations. To quantify the maximum cosmological i…
[ABRIDGED] Inhomogeneous reionization acts as a source of arcminute-scale anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the most important of which is the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. Observational efforts with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT) are poised to detect this signal for the first time. Indeed, recent SPT measurements place a bound on the dimensionless kSZ power spectrum around a multipole of l=3000 of P_tot < 2.8 (6) micro K^2 at 95% C.L., by ignoring (allowing) correlations between the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effe…
Simulation-based Inference of Reionization Parameters from 3D Tomographic 21 cm Light-cone Images -- II: Application of Solid Harmonic Wavelet Scattering Transform
We investigate cosmological signatures of uncorrelated isocurvature perturbations whose power spectrum is blue-tilted with spectral index 2<p<4. Such an isocurvature power spectrum can promote early formation of small-scale structure, notably dark matter halos and galaxies, and may thereby resolve the shortage of ionizing photons suggested by observations of galaxies at high redshifts (z~7-8) but that are required to reionize the universe at z~10. We mainly focus on how the formation of dark matter halos can be modified, and explore the connection between the spectral shape of CMB anisotropies…
A possible way to disentangle the redshifted 21 cm signal of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) from the much larger astrophysical foregrounds is to restrict the analysis to a wedge-shaped region in the Fourier space. The foregrounds are confined to this wedge because of their smooth spectral properties which allows one to estimate the HI power spectrum in the foreground-free portion, known as the reionization window. The estimate of the spherically averaged power spectrum in the window, however, differs from the true value because of the line of sight anisotropies in the…
We present measurements of secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies and cosmic infrared background (CIB) fluctuations using data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) covering the complete 2540 sq.deg. SPT-SZ survey area. Data in the three SPT-SZ frequency bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz, are used to produce six angular power spectra (three single-frequency auto-spectra and three cross-spectra) covering the multipole range 2000 < ell < 11000 (angular scales 5' > θ> 1'). These are the most precise measurements of the angular power spectra at ell > 2500 at these frequencies.…
We present new predictions for temperature (on small angular scales) and polarization (on large angular scales) CMB anisotropies induced during the epoch of reionization (EoR). Using a novel method calibrated from Radiation-Hydrodynamic simulations we model the EoR in large volumes (L >~ 2 Gpc/h) in the context of galactic reionization. We find that the EoR contribution to the kinetic Sunyaev- Zel'dovich power spectrum (patchy kSZ) ranges between ~0.6 - 2.8 muK^2 at ell = 3000, for the parameter space we explored. These patchy kSZ power spectra are calculated from large 15 Deg x 15 Deg maps th…
The Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies are difficult to measure at large angular scales. In this paper, we present a new analysis of the \Planck\ High Frequency Instrument data that brings the cosmological part and its major foreground signal close to the detector noise. The solar dipole signal, induced by the motion of the solar system with respect to the CMB, is a very efficient tool to calibrate a detector or a set of detectors with high accuracy. In this work, the solar dipole signal is used to extract corrections of the frequency maps offsets reducing significantly uncertainties. Th…
By using N-body hydrodynamical cosmological simulations in which the chemistry of major metals and molecules is consistently solved for, we study the interaction of metallic fine-structure lines with the CMB. Our analysis shows that the collisional induced emissions in the OI 145 $μ$m and CII 158 $μ$m lines during reionization introduce a distortion of the CMB spectrum at low frequencies ($ν< 300$ GHz) with amplitudes up to $ΔI_ν/B_ν(T_{\rm CMB})\sim 10^{-8}$-$10^{-7}$, i.e., at the $\sim 0.1$ percent level of FIRAS upper limits. Shorter wavelength fine-structure transitions (OI 63 $μ$m, FeII …
We investigate the effect of primordial non-Gaussianity on the cross-correlation between the CMB anisotropies and the 21 cm fluctuations from the epoch of reionization. We assume an analytic reionization model and an ionization fraction with $f_{\rm NL}$ induced scale dependent bias. We estimate the angular power spectrum of the cross-correlation of the CMB and 21 cm. In order to evaluate the detectability, the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio for only a single redshift slice is also calculated for current and future observations, such as CMB observations by Planck satellite and 21 cm observations …
We present the first three-frequency South Pole Telescope (SPT) cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectra. The band powers presented here cover angular scales 2000 < ell < 9400 in frequency bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz. At these frequencies and angular scales, a combination of the primary CMB anisotropy, thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effects, radio galaxies, and cosmic infrared background (CIB) contributes to the signal. We combine Planck and SPT data at 220 GHz to constrain the amplitude and shape of the CIB power spectrum and find strong evidence for non-linear …
We report new measurements of millimeter-wave power spectra in the angular multipole range $2000 \le \ell \le 11,000$ (angular scales $5^\prime \gtrsim θ\gtrsim 1^\prime$). By adding 95 and 150\,GHz data from the low-noise 500 deg$^2$ SPTpol survey to the SPT-SZ three-frequency 2540 deg$^2$ survey, we substantially reduce the uncertainties in these bands. These power spectra include contributions from the primary cosmic microwave background, cosmic infrared background, radio galaxies, and thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effects. The data favor a thermal SZ (tSZ) power at 143\,GHz…
Unresolved near-infrared background anisotropies are expected to have contributions from the earliest galaxies during reionization and faint, dwarf galaxies at intermediate redshifts. Previous measurements were unable to conclusively pinpoint the dominant origin because they did not sample spatial scales that were sufficiently large to distinguish between these two possibilities. Here we report a measurement of the anisotropy power spectrum from sub-arcminute to one degree angular scales and find the clustering amplitude to be larger than the model predictions involving the two existing explan…
Ultraviolet emission from the first generation of stars in the Universe ionized the intergalactic medium in a process which was completed by z~6; the wavelength of these photons has been redshifted by (1+z) into the near infrared today and can be measured using instruments situated above the Earth's atmosphere. First flying in February 2009, the Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER) comprises four instruments housed in a single reusable sounding rocket borne payload. CIBER will measure spatial anisotropies in the extragalactic IR background caused by cosmological structure from the epo…
Details of various unknown physical processes during the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization can be extracted from observations of the redshifted 21-cm signal. These observations, however, will be affected by the evolution of the signal along the line-of-sight which is known as the "light-cone effect". We model this effect by post-processing a dark matter $N-$body simulation with an 1-D radiative transfer code. We find that the effect is much stronger and dramatic in presence of inhomogeneous heating and Ly$α$ coupling compared to the case where these processes are not accounted for. One…
Cosmological transverse momentum fields, whose directions are perpendicular to Fourier wave vectors, induce temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background via the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect. The transverse momentum power spectrum contains the four-point function of density and velocity fields, $\langleδδv v\rangle$. In the post-reionization epoch, nonlinear effects dominate in the power spectrum. We use perturbation theory and cosmological $N$-body simulations to calculate this nonlinearity. We derive the next-to-leading order expression for the power spectrum with a p…
The light-cone (LC) effect causes the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) 21-cm signal $T_{\rm b} (\hat{\bf{n}}, ν)$ to evolve significantly along the line of sight (LoS) direction $ν$. In the first part of this paper, we present a method to properly incorporate the LC effect in simulations of the EoR 21-cm signal that include peculiar velocities. Subsequently, we discuss how to quantify the second order statistics of the EoR 21-cm signal in the presence of the LC effect. We demonstrate that the 3D power spectrum $P({\bf{k}})$ fails to quantify the entire information because it assumes the signal to b…
The late integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect correlates the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies with foreground cosmic large-scale structures. As the correlation depends crucially on the growth history in the era of dark energy, it is a key observational probe for constraining the cosmological model. Here we present a detailed study based on full-sky and deep light cones generated from very large volume numerical N-body simulations, which allow us to avoid the use of standard replica techniques, while capturing the entirety of the late ISW effect on the large scales. We …
The light-cone effect breaks the periodicity and statistical homogeneity (ergodicity) along the line-of-sight direction of cosmological emission/absorption line surveys. The spherically averaged power spectrum (SAPS), which by definition assumes ergodicity and periodicity in all directions, can only quantify some of the second-order statistical information in the 3D light-cone signals and therefore gives a biased estimate of the true statistics. The multi-frequency angular power spectrum (MAPS), by extracting more information from the data, does not rely on these assumptions. It is therefore b…
The light-cone (LC) effect imprints the cosmological evolution of the redshifted 21-cm signal $T_{\rm b} ({\hat{\bf{n}}}, ν)$ along the frequency axis which is the line of sight (LoS) direction of an observer. The effect is particularly pronounced during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) when the mean hydrogen neutral fraction ${\bar{x}_{\rm HI}}(ν)$ falls rapidly as the universe evolves. The multi-frequency angular power spectrum (MAPS) ${{\mathcal C}_{\ell}}(ν_1,ν_2)$ quantifies the entire second-order statistics of $T_{\rm b} ({\hat{\bf{n}}}, ν)$ considering both the systematic variation alon…
The kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) and polarized Sunyaev Zel'dovich (pSZ) effects are temperature and polarization anisotropies induced by the scattering of CMB photons from structure in the post-reionization Universe. In the case of the kSZ effect, small angular scale anisotropies in the optical depth are modulated by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole field, i.e. the CMB dipole observed at each spacetime point, which is sourced by the primordial dipole and especially the local peculiar velocity. In the case of the pSZ effect, similar small-scale anisotropies are modulated by the …
Measurements of secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, such as the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, will enable new tests of neutrino and dark sector properties. The kinetic SZ (kSZ) effect is produced by cosmological flows, probing structure growth. Ultra-light axions (ULAs) are a well-motivated dark-matter candidate. Here the impact of ULA dark matter (with mass $10^{-27}~{\rm eV}$ to $10^{-23}~{\rm eV}$) on kSZ observables is determined, applying new analytic expressions for pairwise cluster velocities and Ostriker-Vishniac signatures in structure-suppressing models. For t…
Observations of anisotropies in the brightness temperature of the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen from the period before reionization would shed light on the dawn of the first stars and galaxies. In this paper, we use large-scale semi-numerical simulations to analyse the imprint on the 21 cm signal of spatial fluctuations in the Lyman-alpha flux arising from the clustering of the first galaxies. We show that an experiment such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) can probe this signal at the onset of reionization, giving us important information about the UV emission spectra of the first stars a…
