Using a large collection of near-infrared spectra (2.5-5.4 um) of Galactic HII regions and HII region-like objects, we perform a systematic investigation of the astronomical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features. 36 objects were observed by the use of the infrared camera onboard the AKARI satellite as a part of a directer's time program. In addition to the well-known 3.3-3.6 um features, most spectra show a relatively-weak emission feature at 5.22 um with sufficient signal-to-noise ratios, which we identify as the PAH 5.25 um band previously reported. By careful analysis, we find good correlations between the 5.25 um band and both the aromatic hydrocarbon feature at 3.3 um and the aliphatic ones at around 3.4-3.6 um. The present results give us convincing evidence that the astronomical 5.25 um band is associated with C-H vibrations as suggested by previous studies and show its potential to probe the PAH size distribution. The analysis also shows that the aliphatic to aromatic ratio of I(3.4-3.6)/I(3.3) decreases against the ratio of the 3.7 um continuum intensity to the 3.3 um band, I(3.7 cont)/I(3.3), which is an indicator of the ionization fraction of PAHs. The mid-infrared color of I(9)/I(18) also declines steeply against the ratio of the hydrogen recombination line Bralpha at 4.05 um to the 3.3 um band, I(Bralpha)/I(3.3). These facts indicate possible dust processing inside or at the boundary of ionized gas.
We investigate the scale dependence of fluctuations inside a realistic model of an evolving turbulent HII region and to what extent these may be studied observationally. We find that the multiple scales of energy injection from champagne flows and the photoionization of clumps and filaments leads to a flatter spectrum of fluctuations than would be expected from top-down turbulence driven at the largest scales. The traditional structure function approach to the observational study of velocity fluctuations is shown to be incapable of reliably determining the velocity power spectrum of our simula…
Stellar feedback, the energetic interaction between young stars and their birthplace, plays an important role in the star formation history of the universe and the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). Correctly interpreting the observations of star-forming regions is essential to understand stellar feedback, but it is a non-trivial task due to the complexity of the feedback processes and degeneracy in observations. In our recent paper, we introduced a conditional invertible neural network (cINN) that predicts seven physical properties of star-forming regions from the luminosity of 12 op…
We present a new model of the optical nebular emission from HII regions by combin- ing the results of the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (bpass) code with the photoion- ization code cloudy (Ferland et al. 1998). We explore a variety of emission-line diagnostics of these star-forming HII regions and examine the effects of metallicity and interacting binary evo- lution on the nebula emission-line production. We compare the line emission properties of HII regions with model stellar populations, and provide new constraints on their stellar populations and supernova progenitors. We find t…

The statistical shape analysis method developed for probing the link between physical parameters and morphologies of Galactic HII regions is applied here to a set of synthetic observations (SOs) of a numerically modelled HII region. The systematic extraction of HII region shape, presented in the first paper of this series, allows for a quantifiable confirmation of the accuracy of the numerical simulation, with respect to the real observational counterparts of the resulting SOs. A further aim of this investigation is to determine whether such SOs can be used for direct interpretation of the obs…
Stellar feedback is often cited as the biggest uncertainty in galaxy formation models today. This uncertainty stems from a dearth of observational constraints as well as the great dynamic range between the small scales (<1 pc) where the feedback occurs and the large scales of galaxies (>1 kpc) that are shaped by this feedback. To bridge this divide, in this paper we aim to assess observationally the role of stellar feedback at the intermediate scales of HII regions. In particular, we employ multiwavelength data to examine several stellar feedback mechanisms in a sample of 32 HII regions in the…
Most recent numerical simulations suggest that bipolar HII regions, powered by O-type stars, can be formed at the interface of two colliding clouds. To observationally understand the birth of O-type stars, we present a detailed multi-wavelength analysis of an area of 1 deg x 1 deg hosting G8.14+0.23 HII region associated with an infrared bipolar nebula (BPN). Based on the radio continuum map, the HII region is excited by at least an O-type star, which is located toward the waist of the BPN. The NANTEN2 13CO line data reveal the existence of two extended clouds at [9, 14.3] and [15.3, 23.3] km/…
Context. The knowledge of abundance distributions is central to understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. Most of the relations employed for the derivation of gas abundances have so far been derived from observations of outer disk HII regions, despite the known differences between inner and outer regions. Aims. Using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations we aim to perform a systematic study and comparison of two inner and outer HII regions samples. The spatial resolution of the IFS, the number of objects and the homogeneity and coherence of the observations allow a comple…
We present a review on the determination of the primordial helium abundance Yp, based on the study of hydrogen and helium recombination lines in extragalactic HII regions. We also discuss the observational determinations of the increase of helium to the increase of oxygen by mass Delta Y / Delta O, and compare them with predictions based on models of galactic chemical evolution.
We provide new ionization correction factors (ICFs) for carbon, nitrogen, neon, sulfur, chlorine, and argon in giant H II regions. The ICFs were computed using the most representative photoionization models from a large initial grid. The models were selected using an observational sample of 985 giant H II regions (GHR) in spiral galaxies and blue compact galaxies (BCG). The observational sample was also used to assign a weight to each model describing how well it agrees with observations in the [O III]/Hbeta versus [N II]/Halpha diagram. In addition to the ICFs we provide, for the first time, …
To understand the formation process of massive stars, we present a multi-scale and multi-wavelength study of the W31 complex hosting two extended HII regions (i.e., G10.30-0.15 (hereafter, W31-N) and G10.15-0.34 (hereafter, W31-S)) powered by a cluster of O-type stars. Several Class I protostars and a total of 49 ATLASGAL 870 $μ$m dust clumps (at d = 3.55 kpc) are found toward the HII regions where some of the clumps are associated with the molecular outflow activity. These results confirm the existence of a single physical system hosting the early phases of star formation. The Herschel 250 $μ…
We have selected the Galactic HII region M43, a close-by apparently spherical nebula ionized by a single star (HD37061) to investigate several topics of recent interest in the field of HII regions and massive stars. In a series of two papers we perform a combined, comprehensive study of the nebula and its ionizing star by using as many observational constraints as possible. We collected for this study a set of high-quality observations, including the optical spectrum of HD37061, along with nebular optical imaging and long-slit spatially resolved spectroscopy. The first part of our study compri…
We examine how the small-scale ($<$\,kpc) variation of metallicity within a galaxy, which is found in nearby galaxies, affect the observational estimates of metallicity in the explosion sites of transient events such as core-collapse supernovae (CC SNe) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Assuming the same luminosity, metallicity, and spatial distributions of \ion{H}{ii}\ regions (hereafter HIIRs) as observed in M31, we compute the apparent metallicities that we would obtain when the spectrum of a target region is blended with those of surrounding HIIRs within the length scale of typical spatial reso…
Stellar feedback is needed to produce realistic giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and galaxies in simulations, but due to limited numerical resolution, feedback must be implemented using subgrid models. Observational work is an important means to test and anchor these models, but limited studies have assessed the relative dynamical role of multiple feedback modes, particularly at the earliest stages of expansion when HII regions are still deeply embedded. In this paper, we use multiwavelength (radio, infrared, and X-ray) data to measure the pressures associated with direct radiation ($P_{\rm dir}$…
As part of a systematic study that we are performing with the aim to increase the observational evidence of triggered star formation in the surroundings of HII regions, we analyze the ISM around the HII region G35.673-00.847, a poorly studied source. Using data from large-scale surveys: Two Micron All Sky Survey, Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE), MIPSGAL, Galactic Ring Survey (GRS), VLA Galactic Plane Survey (VGPS), and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) we performed a multiwavelength study of G35.673-00.847 and its surroundings. The mid IR emission, shows that G35.67…
We perform a multiwavelength study toward the SNR G18.1-0.1 and nearby several HII regions (infrared dust bubbles N21 and N22, and the HII regions G018.149-00.283 and G18.197-00.181). Our goal is to provide observational evidence supporting that massive stars usually born in clusters from the same molecular cloud, which then produce, along their evolution, different neighboring objects such as HII regions, interstellar bubbles and supernova remnants. We suggest that the objects analysed in this work belong to a same complex located at the distance of about 4 kpc. Using molecular data we inspec…
We present spectral line mapping observations toward four massive star-forming regions (Cepheus A, DR21S, S76E and G34.26+0.15), with the IRAM 30 meter telescope at 2 mm and 3 mm bands. Totally 396 spectral lines from 51 molecules, one helium recombination line, ten hydrogen recombination lines, and 16 unidentified lines were detected in these four sources. An emission line of nitrosyl cyanide (ONCN, 14$_{0,14}$-13$_{0,13}$) was detected in G34.26+0.15, as first detection in massive star-forming regions. We found that the $c$-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ and NH$_{2}$D show enhancement in shocked regions as …
We use the optical integral field observations with Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope, together with CLOUDY photoionization models to study ionization structure and physical conditions of two luminous HII regions in N44 star-forming complex of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The spectral maps of various emission lines reveal a stratified ionization geometry in N44 D1. The spatial distribution of [O I] 6300A emission in N44 D1 indicates a partially covered ionization front at the outer boundary of the H II region. These observations reveal that N44 D1 is a Blister…
Young massive stars play an important role in the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) and the self-regulation of star formation in giant molecular clouds (GMCs) by injecting energy, momentum, and radiation (stellar feedback) into surrounding environments, disrupting the parental clouds, and regulating further star formation. Information of the stellar feedback inheres in the emission we observe, however inferring the physical properties from photometric and spectroscopic measurements is difficult, because stellar feedback is a highly complex and non-linear process, so that the observati…
Aims. To increase the observational samples of star formation around expanding Hii regions, we analyzed the interstellar medium and star formation around N22. Methods. We used data extracted from the seven large-scale surveys from infrared to radio wavelengths. In addition we used the JCMT observations of the J = 3-2 line of 12CO emission data released on CADC and the 12CO J = 2-1 and J =3-2 lines observed by the KOSMA 3 m telescope. We performed a multiwavelength study of bubble N22. Results. A molecular shell composed of several clumps agrees very well with the border of N22, suggesting that…
We report an observational study of the giant molecular cloud (GMC) associated with the Galactic infrared ring-like structure N35 and two nearby HII regions G024.392+00.072 (HII region A) and G024.510-00.060 (HII region B), using the new CO J=1-0 data obtained as a part of the FOREST Unbiased Galactic Plane Imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope (FUGIN) project at a spatial resolution of 21". Our CO data revealed that the GMC, with a total molecular mass of 2.1x10^6Mo, has two velocity components over ~10-15km/s. The majority of molecular gas in the GMC is included in the lower-veloci…
This is the fourth paper exploring the infrared properties of giant HII regions with the FORCAST instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Our survey utilizes the census of 56 Milky Way giant HII regions identified by Conti & Crowther (2004), and in this paper we present the 20 and 37 micron imaging data we have obtained from SOFIA for sources Sgr D and W42. Based upon the SOFIA data and other multi-wavelength data, we derive and discuss the detailed physical properties of the individual compact sources and sub-regions as well as the large scale properties of …
X-ray binaries (XRBs) are probes of both star formation and stellar mass, but more importantly remain one of the only direct tracers of the compact object population. To investigate the XRB population in M31, we utilized all 121 publicly available observations of M31 totalling over 1 Ms from $\it{Chandra's}$ ACIS instrument. We studied 83 star clusters in the bulge using the year 1 star cluster catalogue from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury Survey. We found 15 unique star clusters that matched to 17 X-ray point sources within 1'' (3.8 pc). This population is composed predominantly o…
We present the local HII region metallicity near the site of the recently discovered multiply lensed supernova (SN; "SN Refsdal") at redshift 1.49. "SN Refsdal" is located at the outer spiral arm ($\sim$7 kpc) of the lensed host galaxy, which we have previously reported to exhibit a steep negative galactocentric metallicity gradient. Based on our updated near-infrared integral field spectroscopic data, the gas-phase metallicity averaged in an intrinsic radius of $\sim$ 550 pc surrounding an HII region $\sim$ 200 pc away from the SN site is 12 + log(O/H)$_{\rm PP04N2}$ $\le$ 8.67. The metallici…
Metal-poor, star-forming dwarf galaxies produce extreme nebular emission and likely played a major role in cosmic reionization. Yet, determining their contribution to the high-redshift ionizing photon budget is hampered by the lack of observations constraining the ionizing spectra of individual massive stars more metal-poor than the Magellanic Clouds (20-50%$\,Z_\odot$). We present new Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) optical integral field unit spectroscopy of the only HII region in Leo P (3%$\,Z_\odot$), which is powered by a single O star. We calculate the required production rate of photons c…
Winds from young massive stars contribute a large amount of energy to their host molecular clouds. This has consequences for the dynamics and observable structure of star-forming clouds. In this paper, we present radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of turbulent molecular clouds that form individual stars of 30, 60 and 120 solar masses emitting winds and ultraviolet radiation following realistic stellar evolution tracks. We find that winds contribute to the total radial momentum carried by the expanding nebula around the star at 10 % of the level of photoionisation feedback, and have only…
Spectral modelling of SNII atmospheres indicates a clear dependence of metal line strengths on progenitor metallicity. This motivates further work to evaluate the accuracy with which these SNe can be used as metallicity indicators. To assess this accuracy we present a sample of SNII HII-region spectroscopy, from which environment abundances are derived. These environment abundances are compared to the observed strength of metal lines in SN spectra. Combining our sample with measurements from the literature, we present oxygen abundances of 119 host HII regions, by extracting emission line fluxe…
We present an analysis of multi-wavelength observations of an area of 0.27 deg x 0.27 deg around the Galactic HII region G18.88-0.49, which is powered by an O-type star (age ~10^5 years). The Herschel column density map reveals a shell-like feature of extension ~12 pc x 7 pc and mass ~2.9 x 10^4 Msun around the HII region; its existence is further confirmed by the distribution of molecular (12CO, 13CO, C18O, and NH3) gas at [60, 70] km/s. Four subregions are studied toward this shell-like feature, and show a mass range of ~0.8-10.5 x 10^3 Msun. These subregions associated with dense gas are do…
We investigate the size--density relation in extragalactic HII regions, with the aim of understanding the role of dust and different physical conditions in the ionized medium. First, we compiled several observational data sets for Galactic and extragalactic HII regions and confirm that extragalactic HII regions follow the same size (D)--density (n) relation as Galactic ones. Motivated by the inability of static models to explain this, we then modelled the evolution of the size--density relation of HII regions by considering their star formation history, the effects of dust, and pressure-driven…
We present a new model to compute the luminosity of emission lines in star forming galaxies and apply this in the semi-analytical galaxy formation code GALFORM. The model combines a pre-computed grid of HII region models with an empirical determination of how the properties of HII regions depend on the macroscopic properties of galaxies based on observations of local galaxies. The new model gives a very good reproduction of the locus of star-forming galaxies on standard line ratio diagnostic diagrams. The new model shows evolution in the locus of star forming galaxies with redshift on this lin…
(abridged) Quantifying the ISM porosity to ionizing photons in nearby galaxies may improve our understanding of the mechanisms leading to Lyman Continuum photons leakage from galaxies. Primitive galaxies with low metal and dust content have been shown to host a more patchy and porous ISM than their high-metallicity counterparts. To what extent this peculiar structure contributes to the leakage of ionizing photons remains to be quantitatively studied. To address these questions we build a refined grid of models including density-bounded regions and a possible contribution of an X-ray source. Us…
(Context) Many physical parameters change with time in star forming regions. Here we attempt to correlate changes in infall and outflow motions in high mass star forming regions with evolutionary stage using JCMT observations. (Aims) From a sample of 45 high mass star forming regions in three phases of evolution, we investigate the presence of established infall and outflow tracers to determine whether there are any trends attributable to the age of the source. (Methods) We obtained JCMT observations of HCO+/H13CO+ J=4-3 to trace large scale infall, and SiO J=8-7 to trace recent outflow activi…
We study the chemistry of small hydrocarbons in the photon-dominated regions (PDRs) associated with the ultra-compact HII region Mon R2. Our goal is to determine the variations of the abundance of small hydrocarbons in a high-UV irradiated PDR and investigate their chemistry. We present an observational study of CH, CCH and c-C$_3$H$_2$ in Mon R2 combining data obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope and Herschel. We determine the column densities of these species, and compare their spatial distributions with that of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). We compare the observational results with…
We present multi-scale and multi-wavelength observations of the Galactic HII region S305, which is excited by massive O8.5V and O9.5V stars. Infrared images reveal an extended sphere-like shell (extension ~7.5 pc; at T_d = 17.5-27 K) enclosing the S305 HII region (size ~5.5 pc; age ~1.7 Myr). The extended structure observed in the Herschel temperature map indicates that the molecular environment of S305 is heated by the massive O-type stars. Regularly spaced molecular condensations and dust clumps are investigated toward the edges of the infrared shell, where the PAH and H_2 emission is also o…
Nowadays there are several observational studies about the 13CO/C18O abundance ratio (X) towards nearby molecular clouds. These works give observational support to the C18O selective photodissociation due to the interaction between the FUV radiation and the molecular gas. It is necessary to increase the sample of molecular clouds located at different distances and affected in different ways by nearby or embedded HII regions and OB associations to study the selective photodissociation. Using 12CO, 13CO, and C18O J=1-0 data obtained from the FOREST Survey, we analyze the filamentary infrared dar…
Magnetic fields permeate the Universe on all scales and play a key role during star formation. We study the evolution of magnetic fields around a massive metal-free (Population III) star at $z \sim 15$ during the growth of its HII region and subsequent supernova explosion by conducting three cosmological magnetohydrodynamic simulations with radiation transport. Given the theoretical uncertainty and weak observational constraints of magnetic fields in the early universe, we initialize the simulations with identical initial conditions only varying the seed field strength. We find that magnetic f…
Magnetic fields in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) are a key element in understanding Galactic dynamics, but there are many observational challenges. One useful probe for studying the magnetic field component parallel to the line of sight (LoS) is Faraday rotation of linearly polarized radio synchrotron emission, combined with H$α$ observations. HII regions are the perfect laboratories to probe such magnetic fields as they are localized in space, and are well-defined sources often with known distances and measurable electron densities. We chose the HII region Sharpless 2-27 (Sh 2-27). …
The intermediate- to high-mass star-forming region IRAS 20343+4129 is an excellent laboratory to study the influence of high- and intermediate-mass young stellar objects on nearby starless dense cores, and investigate for possible implications in the clustered star formation process. We present 3 mm observations of continuum and rotational transitions of several molecular species (C2H, c-C3H2, N2H+, NH2D) obtained with the Combined Array for Research in Millimetre-wave Astronomy, as well as 1.3 cm continuum and NH3 observations carried out with the Very Large Array, to reveal the properties of…
The azimuthal variation of the HII region oxygen abundance in spiral galaxies is a key observable for understanding how quickly oxygen produced by massive stars can be dispersed within the surrounding interstellar medium. Observational constraints on the prevalence and magnitude of such azimuthal variations remain rare in the literature. Here, we report the discovery of pronounced azimuthal variations of HII region oxygen abundance in NGC 2997, a spiral galaxy at approximately 11.3 Mpc. Using 3D spectroscopic data from the TYPHOON Program, we study the HII region oxygen abundance at a physical…
Evidence for triggered star formation linking three generations of stars is difficult to assemble, as it requires convincingly associating evolved massive stars with Hii regions that, in turn, would need to present signs of active star formation. We present observational evidence for triggered star formation relating three generations of stars in the neighbourhood of the star LS II +26 8. We carried out new spectroscopic observations of LS II +26 8, revealing that it is a B0 III-type star. We note that LS II +26 8 is located exactly at the geometric centre of a semi-shell-like Hii region compl…

The CHemical Abundances of Spirals (CHAOS) project leverages the combined power of the Large Binocular Telescope with the broad spectral range and sensitivity of the Multi Object Double Spectrograph (MODS) to measure direct abundances in large samples of HII regions in spiral galaxies. We present LBT MODS observations of 109 Hii regions in NGC5457, of which 74 have robust measurements of key auroral lines, a factor of 3 larger than all previous published detections of auroral lines in the HII regions of NGC5457. Comparing the temperatures derived from the different ionic species we find: (1) s…
This paper presents a spectroscopic investigation of 11 HII regions in the nearby galaxy NGC 2403. The HII regions are observed with a long-slit spectrograph mounted on the 2.16 m telescope at XingLong station of National Astronomical Observatories of China. For each of the HII regions, spectra are extracted at different nebular radii along the slit-coverage. Oxygen abundances are empirically estimated from the strong-line indices R23, N2O2, O3N2, and N2 for each spectrophotometric unit, with both observation- and model-based calibrations adopted into the derivation. Radial profiles of these d…
We report an observational study of the Galactic HII region Sh 2-305/S305 using the [CII] 158 $μ$m line data, which are used to examine the gas dynamics and structure of photodissociation regions. The integrated [CII] emission map at [39.4, 49.5] km s$^{-1}$ spatially traces two shell-like structures (i.e., inner and outer neutral shells) having a total mass of $\sim$565 M$_\odot$. The inner neutral shell encompasses an O9.5V star at its centre and has a compact ring-like appearance. However, the outer shell is seen with more extended and diffuse [CII] emission, hosting an O8.5V star at its ce…
Hydrodynamical instabilities are believed to power some of the small scale (0.1-10 pc) turbulence and chemical mixing in the interstellar medium. Identifying such instabilities has always been difficult but recent observations of a wavelike structure (the Ripples) in the Orion nebula have been interpreted as a signature of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI), occurring at the interface between the HII region and the molecular cloud. However, this has not been verified theoretically. In this letter, we investigate theoretically the stability of this interface using observational constraints …

Most of the chemical evolution models are not very reliable for the last 5~Gyr of galactic evolution; this is mainly because abundance gradients found in the literature show a big dispersion for young objects; a big culprit of this is the dispersion found in HII region gradients. Part of this dispersion arises from two different methods used to determine O/H in HII regions: the direct method (DM), based on forbidden lines; and the temperature independent method (TIM), based on permitted lines; the differences between these two methods are about 0.25~dex. We present two chemical evolution model…
The "unidentified" infrared emission (UIE) features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 $μ$m are ubiquitously seen in various astrophysical regions. The UIE features are characteristic of the stretching and bending vibrations of aromatic hydrocarbons. The 3.3 $μ$m feature resulting from aromatic C--H stretches is often accompanied by a weaker feature at 3.4 $μ$m often attributed to aliphatic C--H stretches. The ratio of the observed intensity of the 3.3 $μ$m aromatic C--H feature ($I_{3.3}$) to that of the 3.4 $μ$m aliphatic C--H feature ($I_{3.4}$) allows one to estimate the aliphatic fraction (i…
We present deep optical spectroscopy of eight HII regions located in the anticentre of the Milky Way. The spectra were obtained at the 10.4m GTC and 8.2m VLT. We determined Te([NII]) for all objects and Te([OIII]) for six of them. We also included in our analysis an additional sample of 13 inner-disc Galactic Hii regions from the literature that have excellent T_e determinations. We adopted the same methodology and atomic dataset to determine the physical conditions and ionic abundances for both samples. We also detected the CII and OII optical recombination lines in Sh 2-100, which enables de…
Proplyds and stars inside HII-regions are a well studied phenomenon. It is possible that they were triggered by the expansion of the HII-region itself. Here, we present calculations on the dynamics of HII-regions. We show that the triggered stars that form in the expanding shell of swept up material around the HII region rarely return into the HII regions on timescales that are inferred for the proplyds and observed young stars. However, in very dense environments like Orion, the triggered stars return in time. Thus, our model can explain why proplyds are barely observed in other HII regions. …
We investigate the impact of radiation pressure on spatial dust distribution inside H$_\mathrm{II}$ regions using one-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic simulations, which include absorption and re-emission of photons by dust. In order to investigate grain size effects as well, we introduce two additional fluid components describing large and small dust grains in the simulations. Relative velocity between dust and gas strongly depends on the drag force. We include collisional drag force and coulomb drag force. We find that, in a compact H$_\mathrm{II}$ region, a dust cavity region is formed by…
(Abridged) Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are isolated molecular clouds located on the edges of evolved HII regions where star formation is thought may have been triggered. In this paper we investigate the current level of star formation within a sample of BRCs and evaluate to what extent star formation may have been induced. We present the results of a programme of position-switched CO observations towards 45 southern BRCs. The 12CO, 13CO and C18O (J=1-0) were simultaneously observed using the 22m Mopra telescope. We complement these observations with archival mid-IR submm and radio data. Analys…
(Abridged) Context: The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey is an ongoing multi-wavelength observational programme designed to return a large, well-selected sample of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). We have identified $\sim$2000 MYSO candidates located throughout the Galaxy by comparing the colours of MSX and 2MASS point sources to those of known MYSOs. Aims: To identify the populations of UCHII regions and PNe within the sample and examine their Galactic distribution. Method: We have conducted high resolution radio continuum observations at 6 cm towards 659 MYSO candidates in the northern hemi…
We presented a multi-wavelength study of AFGL 333-Ridge. The molecular line data reveals that the AFGL 333-Ridge has two independent velocity components at -50.5 km/s and -48.0 km/s. In the Position-Velocity diagram, the bridge feature connects with two parts that are spatially correlated but separated in velocity. These observational evidences support the scenario that the two velocity components have collided and merged into one molecular cloud. The majority of Class I YSOs are distributed within the collision region, suggesting that the cloud-cloud collision has induced the YSOs formation i…
W51A is one of the most active star-forming region in our Galaxy, which contains giant molecular clouds with a total mass of 10^6 Msun. The molecular clouds have multiple velocity components over ~20 km/s, and interactions between these components have been discussed as the mechanism which triggered the massive star formation in W51A. In this paper, we report an observational study of the molecular clouds in W51A using the new 12CO, 13CO, and C18O (J=1-0) data covering a 1.4x1.0 degree region of W51A obtained with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope at 20" resolution. Our CO data resolved the four dis…
