In the paper a piecewise constant image approximations of sequential number of pixel clusters or segments are treated. A majorizing of optimal approximation sequence by hierarchical sequence of image approximations is studied. Transition from pixel clustering to image segmentation by reducing of segment numbers in clusters is provided. Algorithms are proved by elementary formulas.

Image segmentation as a clustering problem is to identify pixel groups on an image without any preliminary labels available. It remains a challenge in machine vision because of the variations in size and shape of image segments. Furthermore, determining the segment number in an image is NP-hard without prior knowledge of the image content. This paper presents an automatic color image pixel clustering scheme based on mussels wandering optimization. By applying an activation variable to determine the number of clusters along with the cluster centers optimization, an image is segmented with minim…
Hierarchical clustering is an effective and efficient approach widely used for classical image segmentation methods. However, many existing methods using neural networks generate segmentation masks directly from per-pixel features, complicating the architecture design and degrading the interpretability. In this work, we propose a simpler, more interpretable architecture, called HCFormer. HCFormer accomplishes image segmentation by bottom-up hierarchical clustering and allows us to interpret, visualize, and evaluate the intermediate results as hierarchical clustering results. HCFormer can addre…

Global context information is vital in visual understanding problems, especially in pixel-level semantic segmentation. The mainstream methods adopt the self-attention mechanism to model global context information. However, pixels belonging to different classes usually have weak feature correlation. Modeling the global pixel-level correlation matrix indiscriminately is extremely redundant in the self-attention mechanism. In order to solve the above problem, we propose a hierarchical context network to differentially model homogeneous pixels with strong correlations and heterogeneous pixels with…

Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) are high resolution particle imaging detectors, employed by accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments for high precision physics measurements. While images of particle trajectories are intuitive to analyze for physicists, the development of a high quality, automated data reconstruction chain remains challenging. One of the most critical reconstruction steps is particle clustering: the task of grouping 3D image pixels into different particle instances that share the same particle type. In this paper, we propose the first scalable deep lea…
Application of artificial intelligence in medicine brings in highly accurate predictions achieved by complex models, the reasoning of which is hard to interpret. Their generalization ability can be reduced because of the lack of pixel wise annotated images that occurs in frozen section tissue analysis. To partially overcome this gap, this paper explores the approximate explicit feature map (aEFM) transform of low-dimensional data into a low-dimensional subspace in Hilbert space. There, with a modest increase in computational complexity, linear algorithms yield improved performance and keep int…
We establish a connection between tangles, a concept from structural graph theory that plays a central role in Robertson and Seymour's graph minor project, and hierarchical clustering. Tangles cannot only be defined for graphs, but in fact for arbitrary connectivity functions, which are functions defined on the subsets of some finite universe. In typical clustering applications these universes consist of points in some metric space. Connectivity functions are usually required to be submodular. It is our first contribution to show that the central duality theorem connecting tangles with hierarc…
This paper proposes a hierarchical clustering approach for the segmentation of mobile LiDAR point clouds. We perform the hierarchical clustering on unorganized point clouds based on a proximity matrix. The dissimilarity measure in the proximity matrix is calculated by the Euclidean distances between clusters and the difference of normal vectors at given points. The main contribution of this paper is that we succeed to optimize the combination of clusters in the hierarchical clustering. The combination is obtained by achieving the matching of a bipartite graph, and optimized by solving the mini…
We consider the problem of providing dense segmentation masks for object discovery in videos. We formulate the object discovery problem as foreground motion clustering, where the goal is to cluster foreground pixels in videos into different objects. We introduce a novel pixel-trajectory recurrent neural network that learns feature embeddings of foreground pixel trajectories linked across time. By clustering the pixel trajectories using the learned feature embeddings, our method establishes correspondences between foreground object masks across video frames. To demonstrate the effectiveness of …
Although many methods perform well in single camera tracking, multi-camera tracking remains a challenging problem with less attention. DukeMTMC is a large-scale, well-annotated multi-camera tracking benchmark which makes great progress in this field. This report is dedicated to briefly introduce our method on DukeMTMC and show that simple hierarchical clustering with well-trained person re-identification features can get good results on this dataset.

Cloud detection plays a very important role in the process of remote sensing images. This paper designs a super-pixel level cloud detection method based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and deep forest. Firstly, remote sensing images are segmented into super-pixels through the combination of SLIC and SEEDS. Structured forests is carried out to compute edge probability of each pixel, based on which super-pixels are segmented more precisely. Segmented super-pixels compose a super-pixel level remote sensing database. Though cloud detection is essentially a binary classification problem, our …
In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm for segmentation of imperfect boundary probability maps (BPM) in connectomics. Our algorithm can be a considered as an extension of spectral clustering. Instead of clustering the diffusion maps with traditional clustering algorithms, we learn the manifold and compute an estimate of the minimum normalized cut. We proceed by divide and conquer. We also introduce a novel criterion for determining if further splits are necessary in a component based on it's topological properties. Our algorithm complements the currently popular agglomeration approaches…

Similarity scores in face recognition represent the proximity between pairs of images as computed by a matching algorithm. Given a large set of images and the proximities between all pairs, a similarity score space is defined. Cluster analysis was applied to the similarity score space to develop various taxonomies. Given the number of subjects in the dataset, we used hierarchical methods to aggregate images of the same subject. We also explored the hierarchy above and below the subject level, including clusters that reflect gender and ethnicity. Evidence supports the existence of clustering by…

We present a hierarchical maximum-margin clustering method for unsupervised data analysis. Our method extends beyond flat maximum-margin clustering, and performs clustering recursively in a top-down manner. We propose an effective greedy splitting criteria for selecting which cluster to split next, and employ regularizers that enforce feature sharing/competition for capturing data semantics. Experimental results obtained on four standard datasets show that our method outperforms flat and hierarchical clustering baselines, while forming clean and semantically meaningful cluster hierarchies.
Bagging and boosting are proved to be the best methods of building multiple classifiers in classification combination problems. In the area of "flat clustering" problems, it is also recognized that multi-clustering methods based on boosting provide clusterings of an improved quality. In this paper, we introduce a novel multi-clustering method for "hierarchical clusterings" based on boosting theory, which creates a more stable hierarchical clustering of a dataset. The proposed algorithm includes a boosting iteration in which a bootstrap of samples is created by weighted random sampling of eleme…

We survey agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithms and discuss efficient implementations that are available in R and other software environments. We look at hierarchical self-organizing maps, and mixture models. We review grid-based clustering, focusing on hierarchical density-based approaches. Finally we describe a recently developed very efficient (linear time) hierarchical clustering algorithm, which can also be viewed as a hierarchical grid-based algorithm.

The Ward error sum of squares hierarchical clustering method has been very widely used since its first description by Ward in a 1963 publication. It has also been generalized in various ways. However there are different interpretations in the literature and there are different implementations of the Ward agglomerative algorithm in commonly used software systems, including differing expressions of the agglomerative criterion. Our survey work and case studies will be useful for all those involved in developing software for data analysis using Ward's hierarchical clustering method.
We propose a hierarchical graph neural network (GNN) model that learns how to cluster a set of images into an unknown number of identities using a training set of images annotated with labels belonging to a disjoint set of identities. Our hierarchical GNN uses a novel approach to merge connected components predicted at each level of the hierarchy to form a new graph at the next level. Unlike fully unsupervised hierarchical clustering, the choice of grouping and complexity criteria stems naturally from supervision in the training set. The resulting method, Hi-LANDER, achieves an average of 54% …

Hyperspectral images, which store a hundred or more spectral bands of reflectance, have become an important data source in natural and social sciences. Hyperspectral images are often generated in large quantities at a relatively coarse spatial resolution. As such, unsupervised machine learning algorithms incorporating known structure in hyperspectral imagery are needed to analyze these images automatically. This work introduces the Spatial-Spectral Image Reconstruction and Clustering with Diffusion Geometry (DSIRC) algorithm for partitioning highly mixed hyperspectral images. DSIRC reduces mea…
