The paper offers the method of discovering of some class of solutions for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. An algorithm of constructive solving of the Cauchy periodic problem with a finite-gap initial condition was also obtained.
We consider a cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic potential. In a semiclassical scaling the nonlinear interaction of modulated pulses concentrated in one or several Bloch bands is studied. The notion of closed mode systems is introduced which allows for the rigorous derivation of a finite system of amplitude equations describing the macroscopic dynamics of these pulses.
We consider PT-symmetric, discrete nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation on metric graphs. Soliton solutions are obtained for simplest graph topologies, such as star and tree graphs. Integrability of the problem is shown by proving existence of infinite number of conservation laws.
A new integrable system of two symmetrically coupled derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equations is detected by means of the singularity analysis. A nonlinear transformation is proposed which uncouples the equations of the new system.
A new system of coupled higher-order nonlinear Schroedinger equations is proposed which passes the Painleve test for integrability well. A Lax pair and a multi-field generalization are obtained for the new system.
We consider the problem of reflectionless propagation of PT-symmetric solitons described by the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation on a line in the framework of the concept of transparent boundary conditions for evolution equations. Transparent boundary conditions for the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation are derived. The absence of backscattering at the artificial boundaries is confirmed by the numerical implementation of the transparent boundary conditions.
Only the known integrable cases of the Kodama-Hasegawa higher-order nonlinear Schroedinger equation pass the Painleve test. Recent results of Ghosh and Nandy add no new integrable cases of this equation.
Nonlinear Schrödinger equation (with the Schwarzian initial data) is important in nonlinear optics, Bose condensation and in the theory of strongly correlated electrons. The asymptotic solutions in the region $x/t={\cal O}(1)$, $t\to\infty$, can be represented as a double series in $t^{-1}$ and $\ln t$. Our current purpose is the description of the asymptotics of the coefficients of the series.
We report localized nonlinear modes of the self-focusing and defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the generalized PT-symmetric Scarf-II, Rosen-Morse, and periodic potentials. Parameter regions are presented for broken and unbroken PT-symmetric phases of linear bounded states and the linear stability of the obtained solitons. Moreover, we numerically explore the dynamical behaviors of solitons and find stable solitons for some given parameters.
We propose integrable discretizations of derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equations such as the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation by constructing Lax pairs. The discrete DNLS systems admit the reduction of complex conjugation between two dependent variables and possess bi-Hamiltonian structure. Through transformations of variables and reductions, we obtain novel integrable discretizations of the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS), modified KdV (mKdV), mixed NLS, matrix NLS, matrix KdV, matrix mKdV, coupled NLS, coupled Hirota, coupled Sasa-Sats…
The Hirota equation is a higher order extension of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation by incorporating third order dispersion and one form of self steepening effect. New periodic waves for the discrete Hirota equation are given in terms of elliptic functions. The continuum limit converges to the analogous result for the continuous Hirota equation, while the long wave limit of these discrete periodic patterns reproduces the known result of the integrable Ablowitz-Ladik system.
We study the wave breaking mechanism for the weakly dispersive defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation with a constant phase dark initial datum that contains a vacuum point at the origin. We prove by means of the exact solution to the initial value problem that, in the dispersionless limit, the vacuum point is preserved by the dynamics until breaking occurs at a finite critical time. In particular, both Riemann invariants experience a simultaneous breaking at the origin. Although the initial vacuum point is no longer preserved in the presence of a finite dispersion, the critical behav…
A five-dimensional symmetry algebra consisting of Lie point symmetries is firstly computed for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation, which, together with a reflection invariance, generates two five-parameter solution groups. Three ansaetze of transformations are secondly analyzed and used to construct exact solutions to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. Various examples of exact solutions with constant, trigonometric function type, exponential function type and rational function amplitude are given upon careful analysis. A bifurcation phenomenon in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation is clea…
It is argued that the integrable modified nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the nonlinearity dispersion term is the true starting point to analytically describe subpicosecond pulse dynamics in monomode fibers. Contrary to the known assertions, solitons of this equation are free of self-steepining and the breather formation is possible.
The hierarchy structure associated with a (2+1)-dimensional Nonlinear Schroedinger equation is discussed as an extension of the theory of the KP hierarchy. Several methods to construct special solutions are given. The relation between the hierarchy and a representation of toroidal Lie algebras are established by using the language of free fermions. A relation to the self-dual Yang-Mills equation is also discussed.
We derive two new solutions in terms of elliptic functions, one for the dark and one for the bright soliton regime, for the semi-discrete cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation of Ablowitz and Ladik. When considered in the complex plane, these two solutions are identical. In the continuum limit, they reduce to known elliptic function solutions. In the long wave limit, the dark one reduces to the collision of two discrete dark solitons, and the bright one to a discrete breather.
The integrability of a system of two symmetrically coupled higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equations with parameter coefficients is tested by means of the singularity analysis. It is proven that the system passes the Painlevé test for integrability only in ten distinct cases, of which two are new. For one of the new cases, a Lax pair and a multi-field generalization are obtained; for the other one, the equations of the system are uncoupled by a nonlinear transformation.
We present the exact bright one-soliton and two-soliton solutions of the integrable three coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations (3-CNLS) by using the Hirota method, and then obtain them for the general $N$-coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations (N-CNLS). It is pointed out that the underlying solitons undergo inelastic (shape changing) collisions due to intensity redistribution among the modes. We also analyse the various possibilities and conditions for such collisions to occur. Further, we report the significant fact that the various partial coherent solitons (PCS) discussed in the liter…
An integrable extension of the well known nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation to a higher space-dimension, recently proposed by us, is investigated, exploring its various important aspects. Focusing on the idea of construction its connection with other known models like the Zakharov equation and the Strachan construction is shown. The underlying integrable structures like the Lax pair, the infinite conserved charges and the higher soliton solutions are presented in the explicit form. The related 2D rogue wave model and other applications are focused on.
All stationary solutions to the one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation under box and periodic boundary conditions are presented in analytic form. We consider the case of repulsive nonlinearity; in a companion paper we treat the attractive case. Our solutions take the form of stationary trains of dark or grey density-notch solitons. Real stationary states are in one-to-one correspondence with those of the linear Schrödinger equation. Complex stationary states are uniquely nonlinear, nodeless, and symmetry-breaking. Our solutions apply to many physical contexts, including the Bose-Einst…
Oblique propagation of magnetohydrodynamic waves in warm plasmas is described by a modified vector derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation, if charge separation in Poisson's equation and the displacement current in Ampere's law are properly taken into account. This modified equation cannot be reduced to the standard derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation and hence its possible integrability and related properties need to be established afresh. Indeed, the new equation is shown to be integrable by the existence of a bi--Hamiltonian structure, which yields the recursion operator needed to…
Soliton motion in some external potentials is studied using the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Solitons are scattered by a potential wall. Solitons propagate almost freely or are trapped in a periodic potential. The critical kinetic energy for reflection and trapping is evaluated approximately with a variational method.
Soliton interactions in systems modelled by coupled nonlinear Schroedinger (CNLS) equations and encountered in phenomena such as wave propagation in optical fibers and photorefractive media possess unusual features : shape changing intensity redistributions, amplitude dependent phase shifts and relative separation distances. We demonstrate these properties in the case of integrable 2-CNLS equations. As a simple example, we consider the stationary two-soliton solution which is equivalent to the so-called partially coherent soliton (PCS) solution discussed much in the recent literature.
The interaction of two rectangular pulses in nonlinear Schroedinger model is studied by solving the appropriate Zakharov-Shabat system. It is shown that two real pulses may result in appearance of moving solitons. Different limiting cases, such as a single pulse with a phase jump, a single chirped pulse, in-phase and out-of-phase pulses, and pulses with frequency separation, are analyzed. The thresholds of creation of new solitons and multi-soliton states are found.
A classification of all possible realizations of the Galilei, Galilei-similitude and Schroedinger Lie algebras in three-dimensional space-time in terms of vector fields under the action of the group of local diffeomorphisms of the space $\R^3\times\C$ is presented. Using this result a variety of general second order evolution equations invariant under the corresponding groups are constructed and their physical significance are discussed.
All stationary solutions to the one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation under box or periodic boundary conditions are presented in analytic form for the case of attractive nonlinearity. A companion paper has treated the repulsive case. Our solutions take the form of bounded, quantized, stationary trains of bright solitons. Among them are two uniquely nonlinear classes of nodeless solutions, whose properties and physical meaning are discussed in detail. The full set of symmetry-breaking stationary states are described by the $C_{n}$ character tables from the theory of point groups. We m…
We study an integrable modification of the focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation from the point of view of semiclassical asymptotics. In particular, (i) we establish several important consequences of the mixed-type limiting quasilinear system including the existence of maps that embed the limiting forms of both the focusing and defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equations into the framework of a single limiting system for the modified equation, (ii) we obtain bounds for the location of discrete spectrum for the associated spectral problem that are particularly suited to the semiclassical lim…
General high-order rogue waves in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation are derived by the bilinear method. These rogue waves are given in terms of determinants whose matrix elements have simple algebraic expressions. It is shown that the general N-th order rogue waves contain N-1 free irreducible complex parameters. In addition, the specific rogue waves obtained by Akhmediev et al. (Phys. Rev. E 80, 026601 (2009)) correspond to special choices of these free parameters, and they have the highest peak amplitudes among all rogue waves of the same order. If other values of these free parameters are…
Spectral theory for self-adjoint Dirac operators with periodic potentials and inverse scattering transform for the defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic boundary conditions
Linear theory for phonon scattering by discrete breathers in the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation using the transfer matrix approach is presented. Transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained as a function of the wave vector of the input phonon. The occurrence of a nonzero transmission, which in fact becomes perfect for a symmetric breather, is shown to be connected with localized eigenmodes thresholds. In the weak-coupling limit, perfect reflection are shown to exist, which requires two scattering channels. A necessary condition for a system to have a perfect reflection is al…
