We calculate the gravitational contributions to $ϕ^4$ theory with general $R_ξ$ gauge-fixing choice and find that the result is gauge independent. Based on weak coupling expansion of gravity and ignoring the possible higher dimensional operators from "integrating out" the impact of gravity, we study the impacts of gravitational effects on vacuum stability. New contributions to the beta function of scalar quartic coupling $\la$ by gravitational effects can modify the RGE running of $\la$ near the Planck scale. Numerical calculations show that the lower bound of higgs mass requiring absolutely vacuum stability can be relaxed for almost 0.6 to 0.8 GeV depending on the choice of top quark mass.
In the Standard Model (SM), the Higgs mass around 125 GeV implies that the electroweak vacuum is metastable since the quartic Higgs coupling turns negative at high energies. I point out that a tiny mixing of the Higgs with a heavy singlet can make the electroweak vacuum completely stable. This is due to a tree level correction to the Higgs mass-coupling relation, which survives in the zero-mixing/heavy-singlet limit. Such a situation is experimentally indistinguishable from the SM, unless the Higgs self-coupling can be measured. As a result, Higgs inflation and its variants can still be viable…
A neutrinophilic Higgs model has tiny vacuum expectation value (VEV), which can naturally explain tiny masses of neutrinos. There is a large energy scale hierarchy between a VEV of the neutrinophilic Higgs doublet and that of usual standard model-like Higgs doublet. In this paper we at first analyze vacuum structures of Higgs potential in both supersymmetry (SUSY) and non-SUSY neutrinophilic Higgs models, and next investigate a stability of this VEV hierarchy against radiative corrections. We will show that the VEV hierarchy is stable against radiative corrections in both Dirac neutrino and Ma…
We study vacuum stability of B-L extension of the Standard Model (SM) and its supersymmetric version. We show that the generation of non-vanishing neutrino masses through TeV inverse seesaw mechanism leads to a cutoff scale of SM Higgs potential stability of order 10^5 GeV. However, in the non-supersymmetric B-L model, we find that the mixing between the SM-like Higgs and the B-L Higgs plays a crucial role in alleviating the vacuum stability problem. We also provide the constraints of stabilizing the Higgs potential in the supersymmetric B-L model.
We discuss the vacuum energy density term resulting from the spontaneous breakdown of the electroweak gauge symmetry, in the Higgs Mechanism. We alternatively expand the scalar field at one of the degenerate states that lie outside the circle of minimum, such that the Higgs Potential becomes free of any constant field term, and describes a true vacuum. We show that this true vacuum requires a slightly smaller quartic coupling, if the same $v$ and $m_H$ values of the electroweak model are imposed. We propose that this small difference (exactly 20 percent) can be utilized as a test to distinguis…
We show that the vacuum structure of a generic multi-Higgs-doublet model shares several important features with the vacuum structure of the two and three Higgs-doublet model. In particular, one can still define the usual charge breaking, spontaneous CP breaking and normal (charge and CP preserving) stationary points. We analyse the possibility of charge or spontaneous CP breaking, by studying the relative depth of the potential in each of the possible stationary points.
We study the stability of the effective higgs potential in the split supersymmetry and Little Higgs models. In particular, we study the effects of higher dimensional operators in the effective potential on the higgs mass predictions. We find that the size and sign of the higher dimensional operators can significantly change the higgs mass required to maintain vacuum stability in Split Susy models. In the Little Higgs models the effects of higher dimensional operators can be large because of a relatively lower cut-off scale. Working with a specific model we find that a contribution from the hig…
This paper has been withdrawn by the authors, because the authors have second thought that the new ideas in this paper are better to be contained in another paper.
We study vacuum stability of supersymmetric extended Higgs sectors with a discrete $Z_2$ symmetry. These models may be able to explain dark matter, neutrino masses, baryon asymmetry of the Universe and hierarchy problem simultaneously at the TeV scale. This $Z_2$ symmetry could be broken spontaneously. We examine the stability of the $Z_2$ symmetric vacuum at the tree level in several models with such extended Higgs sectors.
The scalar potential of the two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) may have more than one local minimum and the usually considered vacuum could be located at one of them that could decay to another. This paper studies the condition that the usually considered vacuum is the global minimum which, combined with the bounded-from-below condition, will stabilize the vacuum at tree-level. We further apply these conditions to a specific 2HDM and obtain new constraints which could be important in phenomenological studies.
The existence of a second Higgs doublet in Nature could lead to a cosmological first order electroweak phase transition and explain the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. We explore the parameter space of such a two-Higgs-doublet-model and show that a first order electroweak phase transition strongly correlates with a significant uplifting of the Higgs vacuum w.r.t. its Standard Model value. We then obtain the spectrum and properties of the new scalars $H_0$, $A_0$ and $H^{\pm}$ that signal such a phase transition, showing that the decay $A_0 \rightarrow H_0 Z$ at the L…
We study a Dirac neutrino mass model of Davidson and Logan. In the model, the smallness of the neutrino mass is originated from the small vacuum expectation value of the second Higgs of two Higgs doublets. We study the one loop effective potential of the Higgs sector and examine how the small vacuum expectation is stable under the radiative correction. By deriving formulae of the radiative correction, we numerically study how large the one loop correction is and show how it depends on the quadratic mass terms and quartic couplings of the Higgs potential. The correction changes depending on the…
We examine the gauge dependence of lower bounds on the Higgs mass obtained from the requirement that the electroweak vacuum be the global minimum of the effective potential. We study a simple model, the spontaneously-broken Abelian Higgs model coupled to a chiral quark doublet in a two-parameter gauge and demonstrate that the lower bounds on the Higgs mass obtained in this model are dependent on the choice of gauge parameters. We discuss the significance of this result for calculations in the Standard Model.
In the standard model, the requirements of vacuum stability and the validity of perturbation theory up to the unification scale force the mass of the Higgs boson to be approximately between 130 GeV and 180 GeV. We re-examine these requirements in the (non-supersymmetric) two-Higgs doublet model, in the light of the large top quark mass, and constrain the masses of the Higgs bosons in this model. It is found that the mass of the charged Higgs boson must be lighter than 150 GeV. This bound is below the lower bound in the popular model-II two-Higgs doublet model, and thus we conclude that this mo…
In this work we review the status of tree-level vacuum stability in general two-Higgs doublet models. We also discuss the problem of Normal minima in some classes of potentials. In some of these potentials, Normal minima can coexist leading to potentially dangerous physic scenarios as, for instance, a two step spontaneous symmetry breaking.
We study constraints from perturbativity and vacuum stability as well as the EWPD in the type II seesaw model. As a result, we can put stringent limits on the Higgs triplet couplings depending on the cut-off scale. The EWPD tightly constrain the Higgs triplet mass splitting to be smaller than 40 GeV. Analyzing the Higgs-to-diphoton rate in the allowed parameter region, we show a possible enhancement by up to 100 % and 50 % for the cut-off scale of 100 TeV and $10^{19}$ GeV, respectively, if the doubly charged Higgs boson mass is as low as 100 GeV.
The Standard Model electroweak vacuum has been found to be metastable, with the true stable vacuum given by a large, phenomenologically unacceptable vacuum expectation value $\approx M_{P}$. Moreover, it may be unstable in an inflationary universe. Motivated by the necessity of physics beyond the Standard Model and to accommodate non-zero neutrino masses, we investigate vacuum stability within type-II seesaw and left-right symmetric models. Our analysis is performed by solving the renormalisation group equations, carefully taking into account the relevant threshold corrections. We demonstrate …
The ATLAS and CMS collaborations discovered a new boson particle. If the new boson is the Higgs boson, the diphoton signal strength is 1.5 - 1.8 times larger than the Standard Model (SM) prediction, while the WW and ZZ signal strengths are in agreement with the SM one. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), overall consistency can be achieved by a light stau and the large left-right mixing of staus. However, a light stau and large left-right mixing of staus may suffer from vacuum instability. We first apply the vacuum meta-stability condition to the Higgs to diphoton decay rate i…
We study constraints from perturbativity and vacuum stability as well as the EWPD in the type II seesaw model. As a result, we can put stringent limits on the Higgs triplet couplings depending on the cut-off scale. The EWPD tightly constrain the Higgs triplet mass splitting to be smaller than about 40 GeV. Analyzing the Higgs-to-diphoton rate in the allowed parameter region, we show how much it can deviate from the Standard Model prediction for specific parameter points.
In the most general model with two Higgs doublets, if a minimum that preserves the $U(1)_{em}$ symmetry exists, then charge breaking (CB) minima cannot occur. The depth of the potential at a stationary point that breaks CB or CP, relative to the $U(1)_{em}$ preserving minimum, is proportional to the squared mass of the charged or pseudoscalar Higgs, respectively.
We investigate the stability of the electroweak vacuum for two-Higgs doublet models with a supersymmetric UV completion. The supersymmetry breaking scale is taken to be of the order of the grand unification scale. We first study the case where all superpartners decouple at this scale. We show that contrary to the Standard Model with one Higgs doublet, matching to the supersymmetric UV completion is possible if the low-scale model contains two Higgs doublets. In this case vacuum stability and experimental constraints point towards low values of tan(beta) < 2 and pseudoscalar masses of at least …
We present the first complete next-to-next-to-leading order analysis of the Standard Model Higgs potential. We computed the two-loop QCD and Yukawa corrections to the relation between the Higgs quartic coupling (lambda) and the Higgs mass (Mh), reducing the theoretical uncertainty in the determination of the critical value of Mh for vacuum stability to 1 GeV. While lambda at the Planck scale is remarkably close to zero, absolute stability of the Higgs potential is excluded at 98% C.L. for Mh < 126 GeV. Possible consequences of the near vanishing of lambda at the Planck scale, including specula…
We present the effects of vector-like fermions (VLF) on the stability of the Higgs electroweak vacuum, using the renormalization group improved Higgs effective potential. We review the calculation of the one-loop beta-functions of the standard model couplings, paying particular attention to the fermion contributions. From this, we derive the VLF contributions to the beta-functions. We also include the significant two-loop contributions to the beta-functions. Using these beta-functions we determine the scale at which the effective Higgs quartic-coupling becomes zero and goes negative, signaling…
In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV can be obtained with moderately heavy scalar top superpartners provided they are highly mixed. The source of this mixing, a soft trilinear stop-stop-Higgs coupling, can result in the appearance of charge- and color-breaking minima in the scalar potential of the theory. If such a vacuum exists and is energetically favorable, the Standard Model-like vacuum can decay to it via quantum tunnelling. In this work we investigate the conditions under which such exotic vacua arise, and we compute the tunnelling rates to t…
We show that in two Higgs doublet models at tree-level the potential minimum preserving electric charge and CP symmetries, when it exists, is the global one. Furthermore, we derived a very simple condition, involving only the coefficients of the quartic terms of the potential, that guarantees spontaneous CP breaking.
Recently it has been found that introducing a triplet Higgs to the standard model could provide a feasible leptogenesis to generate the baryon asymmetry of our universe, providing that the inflation is driven by the mixing state of the triplet Higgs and SM Higgs. In this work, we survey the viable parameter space satisfying the vacuum stability and perturbativity in this model. We find that the introduction of the triplet Higgs would also ameliorate the problem of the Higgs vacuum instability. We present two representative parameter regions where the origin of neutrino masses, baryon asymmetry…
We perform a phenomenological analysis of the observable consequences on the extended scalar sector of the SMASH (Standard Model - Axion - Seesaw - Higgs portal inflation) framework. We solve the vacuum metastability problem in a suitable region of SMASH scalar parameter spaces and discuss the one-loop correction to triple Higgs coupling $λ_{HHH}$. We also find that the correct neutrino masses and mass squared differences and baryonic asymmetry of the universe can arise from this model and consider running of the Yukawa couplings of the model. In fact, we perform a full two-loop renormalizatio…
It is proved that the minimum of a general two Higgs doublet models' potential is stable at tree level. A relation between stability and flavour changing neutral currents at tree level is shown.
We analyze the constraints imposed by Higgs vacuum stability on models with new fermions beyond the Standard Model. We focus on the phenomenology of Higgs couplings accessible at the Large Hadron Collider. New fermions that affect Higgs couplings lead to vacuum instability of the Higgs potential. Above the scale of vacuum instability, bosonic states must stabilize the potential, implying a cut-off to the pure fermion model. Conservatively tuning the models to produce the maximal cut-off for a given Higgs coupling effect, we show that observing a deviation in the $Htt$, $H$-diphoton, or $H$-dig…
The fine-tuning principles are analyzed in search for predictions of top-quark and Higgs-boson masses. The modification of Veltman condition based on the compensation between fermion and boson vacuum energies within the Standard Model multiplets is proposed. It is supplied with the stability under rescaling and with the requirement of minimum for the physical v. e. v. for the Higgs field (zero anomalous dimension). Their joint solution for top-quark and Higgs-boson couplings exists for the cutoff $Λ\approx 2.3 \cdot 10^{13}\,GeV$ that yields the low-energy values $m_t = 151 \pm 4\,GeV; m_H = 1…
We consider the introduction of a complex scalar field carrying a global lepton number charge to the Standard Model and the Higgs inflation framework. The conditions are investigated under which this model can simultaneously ensure Higgs vacuum stability up to the Planck scale, successful inflation, non-thermal Leptogenesis via the pendulum mechanism, and light neutrino masses. These can be simultaneously achieved when the scalar lepton is minimally coupled to gravity, that is, when standard Higgs inflation and reheating proceed without the interference of the additional scalar degrees of free…
We investigate oscillating solutions of the equation of motion for the Higgs potential. The solutions are described by Jacobian elliptic functions. Classifying the classical solutions, we evaluate a possible parameter-space for the initial conditions. In order to construct the field theory around the oscillating solutions quantum fluctuations are introduced. This alternative perturbation method is useful to describe the non-trivial quantum theory around the oscillating state. This perturbation theory reduces to the standard one if we take the solution at the vacuum expectation value. It is sho…
We discuss the computation of the grand canonical partition sum describing hot matter in systems with the Higgs mechanism in the presence of non-zero conserved global charges. We formulate a set of simple rules for that computation in the high-temperature approximation in the limit of small chemical potentials. As an illustration of the use of these rules, we calculate the leading term in the free energy of the standard model as a function of baryon number B. We show that this quantity depends continuously on the Higgs expectation value $ϕ$, with a crossover at $ϕ\sim T$ where Debye screening …
No-scale supersymmetry or gaugino mediation augmented with large negative Higgs soft masses at the input scale provides a simple solution to the supersymmetric flavor problem while giving rise to a neutralino LSP. However, to obtain a neutralino LSP it is often necessary to have tachyonic input Higgs soft masses that can give rise to charge-and-color-breaking (CCB) minima and unbounded-from-below (UFB) directions in the low energy theory. We investigate the vacuum structure in these theories to determine when such problematic features are present. When the standard electroweak vacuum is only m…
In view of the current status of measured Higgs boson properties, we consider a question whether only the Higgs self-interactions can deviate significantly from the Standard-Model (SM) predictions. This may be possible if the Higgs effective potential is irregular at the origin. As an example we investigate an extended Higgs sector with singlet scalar(s) and classical scale invariance. We develop a perturbative formulation necessary to analyze this model in detail. The behavior of a phenomenologically valid potential in the perturbative regime is studied around the electroweak scale. We reprod…
Within the Standard Model, the current Higgs and top quark data favor metastability of the electroweak vacuum, although the uncertainties are still significant. The true vacuum is many orders of magnitude deeper than ours and the barrier separating the two is tiny compared to the depth of the well. This raises a cosmological question: how did the Higgs field get trapped in the shallow minimum and why did it stay there during inflation? The Higgs initial conditions before inflation must be fine--tuned to about one part in 10^8 in order for the Higgs field to end up in the right vacuum. In this …
Using the effective potential approach for composite operators, we have analytically evaluated the truly nonperturbative vacuum energy density in the Abelian Higgs model of dual QCD ground state. This quantity is defined as integrating out of the truly nonperturbative part of the full gluon propagator over the deep infrared region (soft momentum region). Defined in this way it is manifestly gauge invariant. We have explicitly shown that the corresponding effective potential always has an imaginary part. This means that the vacuum of this model with string contributions is unstable against quant…
The possibility that the Standard Model (SM) is valid up to the Planck scale $M_P$, i.e. that new physics occurs only around $M_P$, is nowadays largely explored. For a metastable EW vacuum, we show that new physics interactions can have a great impact on its lifetime, and, differently from previous analyses, they cannot be neglected. Therefore, contrary to usual believes, the stability phase diagram of the SM depends on new physics. This has far reaching consequences. Beyond SM theories can be tested against their prediction for the stability of the EW vacuum. Moreover, despite of some recent …
We update instability and metastability bounds of the Standard Model electroweak vacuum in view of the recent ATLAS and CMS Higgs results. For a Higgs mass in the range 124--126 GeV, and for the current central values of the top mass and strong coupling constant, the Higgs potential develops an instability around $10^{11}$ GeV, with a lifetime much longer than the age of the Universe. However, taking into account theoretical and experimental errors, stability up to the Planck scale cannot be excluded. Stability at finite temperature implies an upper bound on the reheat temperature after inflat…
The parameters of the Higgs potential of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) receive large radiative corrections which lift the mass of the lightest Higgs boson to the measured value of 126 GeV. Depending on the MSSM parameters, these radiative corrections may also lead to the situation that the local minimum corresponding to the electroweak vacuum state is not the global minimum of the Higgs potential. We analyze the stability of the vacuum for the case of heavy squark masses as favored by current LHC data. To this end we first consider an effective Lagrangian obtained by integra…
The complex singlet-doublet model is a popular theory to account for dark matter and electroweak baryogenesis, wherein the Standard Model particle content is supplemented by a complex scalar gauge singlet, with certain discrete symmetries imposed. The scalar potential which results thereof can have seven different types of minima at tree-level, which may coexist for specific choices of parameters. There is therefore the possibility that a given minimum is not global but rather a local one, and may tunnel to a deeper extremum, thus causing vacuum instability. This rich vacuum structure is expla…
Some recollections on the recent history of the concepts of vacuum and mass and the search for higgs. According to the widely spread terminology the Higgs field permeates vacuum and serves as the origin of masses of all fundamental particles including the Higgs Boson -- the higgs.
We consider scenarios of Higgs compositeness where the Higgs doublet arises as a pseudo-Nambu Goldstone boson. Our focus is the physical scalar ("radial") excitation associated with the global symmetry breaking vacuum, which we call the "global Higgs". For the minimal case of a $SO(5)/SO(4)$ coset, the couplings of the global Higgs to Standard Model (SM) particles are fully determined by group theoretical factors and two decay constants. The global Higgs also couples to the composite resonances of the theory, inducing an interaction with the SM gauge bosons at one-loop. We thoroughly analyze r…
We analyze the vacuum stability in the inert Higgs doublet extension of the Standard Model (SM), augmented by right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) to explain neutrino masses at tree level by the seesaw mechanism. We make a comparative study of the high- and low-scale seesaw scenarios and the effect of the Dirac neutrino Yukawa couplings on the stability of the Higgs potential. Bounds on the scalar quartic couplings and Dirac Yukawa couplings are obtained from vacuum stability and perturbativity considerations. The regions corresponding to stability, metastability and instability of the electroweak va…
A generalization of the Higgs mechanism is considered which takes into account the contributions of gauge field vacuum configuration into the formation of the physical vacuum. For the Abelian Higgs model the triviality bound $m_H\le~1.15m_A$ is found.
We discuss the issue of vacuum stability of standard model by embedding it within the TeV scale left-right universal seesaw model (called SLRM in the text). This model has only two coupling parameters $(λ_1, λ_2)$ in the Higgs potential and only two physical neutral Higgs bosons $(h, H)$. We explore the range of values for $(λ_1, λ_2)$ for which the light Higgs boson mass $M_h=126$ GeV and the vacuum is stable for all values of the Higgs fields. Combining with the further requirement that the scalar self couplings remain perturbative till typical GUT scales of order $10^{16}$ GeV, we find (i) …
The Higgs boson, recently discovered with a mass of 125.09$\pm$0.24 GeV is known to mediate the masses of elementary particles, but only 2% of the mass of the nucleon. Extending a previous investigation [1] and including the strange-quark sector, hadron masses are derived from the quark condensate of the QCD vacuum and from the effects of the Higgs boson. These calculations include the $π$ meson, the nucleon and the scalar mesons $σ(600)$, $κ(800)$, $a_0(980)$ $f_0(980)$ and $f_0(1370)$. The predicted second $σ$ meson $σ'(1344)=|s\bar{s}\rangle$, is investigated and identified with the $f_0(13…
We consider classically scale-invariant extensions of the Standard Model (CSI ESM) which stabilise the Higgs potential and have good dark matter candidates. In this framework all mass scales, including electroweak and dark matter masses, are generated dynamically and have a common origin. We consider Abelian and non-Abelian hidden sectors portally coupled to the SM with and without a real singlet scalar. We perform a careful analysis of RG running to determine regions in the parameter space where the SM Higgs vacuum is stabilised. After combining this with the LHC Higgs constraints, in models …
The effective field theory description for modifications of Standard Model-like Higgs boson interactions arising from tree-level mixing with heavy Higgs sector vacuum states without conserved quantum numbers is presented. An expansion in terms of effective operator dimension based on powers of the heavy mass scale rather than operator dimension is utilized to systematically organize interactions within the effective theory. Vacuum states arising from electroweak singlet extensions of the Higgs sector yield at leading order only two effective dimension-six operators. One of these uniformly dilu…
Real time excitations in the broken symmetry phase of the classical Abelian Higgs model are investigated numerically in the unitary gauge. Persistent correlation is detected at finite energy density between the scalar and the longitudinal vector modes, the latter itself displaying non-Gaussian fluctuations. The effect diminishes when the energy density is lowered. Candidate effective mode variables are constructed by non-linear canonical point transformations. Their dispersion relations and equations of state are carefully tested.
We analyse the implications of right-handed neutrinos on the stability of the electroweak vacuum in two-Higgs-doublet models with supersymmetry at high scale. It is assumed that supersymmetry is broken at scale $M_S = 2 \times 10^{16}$ GeV and effective theory below $M_S$ is two-Higgs-doublet model of type II with three generations of singlet neutrinos which induce small masses for the standard model neutrinos through type I seesaw mechanism. We study the high and low scale versions of seesaw mechanism. In both these cases, we show that the presence of right-handed neutrinos significantly impr…
We investigate the electroweak vacuum stability in an extended version of the Standard Model which incorporates two additional singlet scalar fields and three right handed neutrinos. One of these extra scalars plays the role of dark matter while the other scalar not only helps in making the electroweak vacuum stable but also opens up the low mass window of the scalar singlet dark matter (< 500 GeV). We consider the effect of large neutrino Yukawa coupling on the running of Higgs quartic coupling. We have analyzed the constraints on the model and identify the range of parameter space which is c…
We study the stability of neutral electroweak vacua in two Higgs doublet models, and calculate the lifetime of these states when the parameters are such that they are false vacua. As the two Higgs doublet model is invariant under a sign change of both doublets, degenerate true vacua exist. It is shown that this degeneracy, despite the fact that each of these minima locally describes the same physics, can immensely affect their lifetime. We apply these calculations to the parameter space of the models which is allowed by recent LHC searches, and infer combinations of parameters which should be …
In this article the stability of the Standard Model (SM) vacuum in the presence of radiative corrections and for a Higgs boson with a mass in the vicinity of 125 GeV is discussed. The central piece in this discussion will be the Higgs self-interaction $λ$ and its evolution with the energy scale of a given physical process. This is described by the $β$-function to which we recently computed analytically the dominant three-loop contributions. These are mainly the QCD and top-Yukawa corrections as well as the contributions from the Higgs self-interaction itself. We will see that for a Higgs boson…
We present an analysis of supersymmetric left-right symmetric models with Higgs fields lying in the adjoint representation of $SU(2)_R$. These models feature a doubly-charged Higgs boson which gets its mass only at the loop level. We present, for the first time, a complete one-loop calculation of this mass and show that contributions that have been neglected so far can shift it by a few hundreds of GeV. We then combine this observation with LHC bounds deduced from extra charged gauge boson and doubly-charged Higgs boson searches. In particular, we point out that existing limits get substantial…
We show that the effect of the top quark can dominate over the effect of the gauge sector in determining the vacuum alignment in little higgs (LH) models. We demonstrate that in the littlest LH model and the SU(2)xSU(2)xU(1) LH model, ensuring that the correct vacuum alignment is chosen requires that a subset of the gauge sector couplings be large to overcome the effect of the top quark. We quantify this effect by deriving bounds on the couplings in the gauge sector and demonstrate that these bounds provide a compelling theoretical reason for the gauge coupling constant hierarchy in the SU(2)x…
We study different types of Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) under the assumption that all quartic couplings' beta functions vanish simultaneously at the Planck scale. The Standard Model seems to display this property almost accidentally, because the Higgs boson mass is close to 125 GeV. This also ties closely into the question of whether the theory is stable or metastable. We investigate if such "fixed points" can exist in various $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric 2HDM subclasses, and if the theories that meet these conditions are phenomenologically viable, as well as vacuum stable. We find that the f…
Light, electrically charged vector-like `leptons' with order one Yukawa couplings can enhance the Higgs to diphoton decay rate, as is suggested by measurements of the signal strength μ_{γγ} by ATLAS and CMS. However, the large Yukawa interactions tend to drive the Higgs quartic coupling negative at a low scale Λ< 10 TeV, and as such new physics is required to stabilize the electroweak vacuum. A plausible option, which does not rely on supersymmetry, is that the Higgs in fact has a much larger tree level quartic coupling than in the Standard Model, which is possible with an extended scalar sect…
The triviality and vacuum stability bounds on the Higgs-boson mass were revisited in presence of weakly-coupled new interactions parameterized in a model-independent way by effective operators of dimension 6. It was shown that for the scale of new physics in the region Lambda=.5-50 TeV the Standard Model triviality upper bound remains unmodified whereas it is natural to expect that the lower bound derived from the requirement of vacuum stability is increased by 40-60 GeV depending on the scale Lambda and strength of coefficients of effective operators. It turns out that if the Higgs-boson mass…
