We present Herschel and XMM-Newton observations of ULASJ1234+0907 ($z=2.503$), the reddest broad-line Type 1 quasar currently known with (i-K)>7.1. Herschel observations indicate that the quasar host is a hyperluminous infrared galaxy (HyLIRG) with a total infrared luminosity of log10(LIR/L0)=13.90+/-0.02. A greybody fit gives a dust temperature of Td=60+/-3K assuming an emissivity index of beta=1.5, considerably higher than in submillimeter bright galaxies observed at similar redshifts. The star formation rate is estimated to be >2000M0/yr even accounting for a significant contribution from an AGN component to the total infrared luminosity or requiring that only the far infra-red luminosity is powered by a starburst. XMM-Newton observations constrain the hard X-ray luminosity to be L(2-10keV)=1.3e45 erg/s putting ULASJ1234+0907 among the brightest X-ray quasars known. Through very deep optical and near infra-red imaging of the field at sub-arcsecond seeing, we demonstrate that despite its extreme luminosity, it is highly unlikely that ULASJ1234+0907 is being lensed. We measure a neutral hydrogen column density of NH=9e21/cm^2 corresponding to AV~6 mags. The observed properties of ULASJ1234+0907 - high luminosity and Eddington ratio, broad lines, moderate column densities and significant infra-red emission from re-processed dust - are similar to those predicted by galaxy formation simulations for the AGN blowout phase. The high Eddington ratio combined with the presence of significant amounts of dust in this quasar, is expected to drive strong outflows due to the effects of radiation pressure on dust. We conclude that ULASJ1234+0907 is a prototype galaxy caught at the peak epoch of galaxy formation, which is transitioning from a starburst to optical quasar via a dusty quasar phase.
Dusty quasars might be in a young stage of galaxy evolution with prominent quasar feedback. A recently discovered population of luminous, extremely red quasars at $z\sim$~2--4 has extreme spectral properties related to exceptionally powerful quasar-driven outflows. We present Keck/KCWI observations of the reddest known ERQ, at $z=$\,2.3184, with extremely fast [\ion{O}{III}]~$λ$5007 outflow at $\sim$6000~km~s$^{-1}$. The Ly$α$ halo spans $\sim$100~kpc. The halo is kinematically quiet, with velocity dispersion $\sim$300~km~s$^{-1}$ and no broadening above the dark matter circular velocity down …
We present the results of our systematic search for the reddest far-infrared (FIR) and submillimeter (sub-mm) galaxies using the data from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) and the SCUBA2 Cosmological Legacy Survey (S2CLS). The red FIR galaxies are "500~$μ$m risers," whose spectral energy distributions increase with wavelength across the three FIR passbands of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) of Herschel. Within 106.5 deg$^2$ of the HerMES fields, we have selected 629 500 $μ$m risers. The red sub-mm galaxies are "SPIRE dropouts," which are prominent d…
Nearby Type III (galaxy-spanning) Kardashev supercivilizations would have high mid-infrared (MIR) luminosities. We have used the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to survey ~$1 \times 10^5$ galaxies for extreme MIR emission, $10^3$ times more galaxies than the only previous such search. We have calibrated the WISE All-sky Catalog pipeline products to improve its photometry for extended sources. We present 563 extended sources with $|b| \ge 10$ and red MIR colors, having visually vetted them to remove artifacts. No galaxies in our sample host an alien civilization reprocessing more tha…
We present the spectroscopic discovery of 69 quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.0, drawn from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) imaging survey data. This is the 16th publication from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, and completes identification of all but the faintest candidates (i.e., i-band dropouts with zAB < 24 and y-band detections, and z-band dropouts with yAB < 24) with Bayesian quasar probability Pq > 0.1 in the HSC-SSP third public data release (PDR3). The sample reported here also includes three quasars with Pq < 0.1 at z ~ 6.6, …
We analyse a sample of 85 luminous (log(nuLnu(3\um)/erg s-1)>45.5) quasars with restframe ~2-11 \um spectroscopy from AKARI and Spitzer. Their high luminosity allows a direct determination of the near-infrared quasar spectrum free from host galaxy emission. A semi-empirical model consisting of a single template for the accretion disk and two blackbodies for the dust emission successfully reproduces the 0.1-10 \um spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Excess emission at 1-2 \um over the best-fitting model suggests that hotter dust is necessary in addition to the ~1200 K blackbody and the disk t…
Quasars are very important in materializing the reference frame. The excess emission of AGNs (active galactic nuclei) in the mid infrared band can be used to identify quasar candidates. As extremely distant and point like objects, quasars also could be further selected by astrometry method. Increasing the number of reliable quasar candidates is necessary in characterizing the properties of Gaia astrometric solution and evaluating the reliability of Gaia own quasars classification. We identify quasars by using appropriate AllWISE [W1-W2] color and different combinations of astrometric criteria.…
We present the discovery of two z > 6 quasars, selected as i band dropouts in the VST ATLAS survey. Our first quasar has redshift, z = 6.31 \pm 0.03, z band magnitude, z_AB = 19.63 \pm 0.08 and rest frame 1450A absolute magnitude, M_1450 = -27.8 \pm 0.2, making it the joint second most luminous quasar known at z > 6. The second quasar has z = 6.02 \pm 0.03, z_AB = 19.54 \pm 0.08 and M_1450 = -27.0 \pm 0.1. We also recover a z = 5.86 quasar discovered by Venemans et al. (2015, in prep.). To select our quasars we use a new 3D colour space, combining the ATLAS optical colours with mid-infra-red d…
Infrared luminosities vLv(7.8 um) arising from dust reradiation are determined for Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars with 1.4 < z < 5 using detections at 22 um by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer. Infrared luminosity does not show a maximum at any redshift z < 5, reaching a plateau for z >~ 3 with maximum luminosity vLv(7.8 um) >~ 10^{47} erg per s; luminosity functions show one quasar per cubic Gpc having vLv(7.8 um) > 10^{46.6} erg per s for all 2 < z < 5. We conclude that the epoch when quasars first reached their maximum luminosity has not yet been identified at any redshift b…
We determine the 22$μ$m luminosity evolution and luminosity function for quasars from a data set of over 20,000 objects obtained by combining flux-limited Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical and Wide field Infrared Survey Explorer mid-infrared data. We apply methods developed in previous works to access the intrinsic population distributions non-parametrically, taking into account the truncations and correlations inherent in the data. We find that the population of quasars exhibits positive luminosity evolution with redshift in the mid-infrared, but with considerably less mid-infrared evolution t…
We report the results of near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars in the redshift range $6.3< z\le7.64$, including 32 quasars at $z>6.5$, forming the largest quasar near-infrared spectral sample at this redshift. The spectra, taken with Keck, Gemini, VLT, and Magellan, allow investigations of central black hole mass and quasar rest-frame ultraviolet spectral properties. The black hole masses derived from the MgII emission lines are in the range $(0.3-3.6)\times10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$, which requires massive seed black holes with masses $\gtrsim10^{3-4}\,M_{\odot}$, assuming Eddington …
We perform a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) modeling of the projected two-point correlation function (2PCF) of quasars that are observed in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope with counter-parts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release (DR)-8 quasar catalog at a median redshift of $z\sim 1.04 (\pm 0.58)$. Using a four parameter HOD model we derive the host mass scales of WISE selected quasars. Our results show that the median halo masses of central and satellite quasars lie in the range $M_{\mathrm{cen}} = (5 \pm 1.0) \times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\mathr…
We present observed mid-infrared and optical colors and composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of type 1 (broad-line) and 2 (narrow-line) quasars selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy. A significant fraction of powerful quasars are obscured by dust, and are difficult to detect in optical photometric or spectroscopic surveys. However these may be more easily identified on the basis of mid-infrared (MIR) colors and SEDs. Using samples of SDSS type 1 type 2 matched in redshift and [OIII] luminosity, we produce composite rest-frame 0.2-15 micron SEDs based on SDSS, UKI…
We recently proposed the equivalent width (EW) of the narrow [OIII]5007Å emission line as an orientation indicator for active galactic nuclei. We tested this method on about $12,300$ optically selected broad line quasars from the SDSS 7th Data Release at redshift $z < 0.8$ and with full width at half-maximum values of broad emission lines (H$α$, H$β$, and MgII) larger than $2000$ km/s. We now examine their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using broad band photometry from the near-infrared to the ultraviolet to look for variations in the overall shape as a function of the EW[OIII]. We find …
Mid-infrared (MIR) quasar spectra exhibit a suite of emission features including high ionization coronal lines from the narrow line region (NLR) illuminated by the ionizing continuum, and hot dust features from grains, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) features from star formation in the host galaxy. Few features are detected in most spectra because of typically low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) data. By generating spectral composites in three different luminosity bins from over 180 Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations, we boost the S/N and reveal important features i…
We provide a catalog of 391 mid-infrared-selected (MIR, 24$μ$m) broad-emission-line (BEL, type 1) quasars in the 22 deg$^2$ SWIRE Lockman Hole field. This quasar sample is selected in the MIR from Spitzer MIPS with $S_{\rm 24} > 400μ$Jy, jointly with an optical magnitude limit of r (AB) $<$ 22.5 for broad line identification. The catalog is based on MMT and SDSS spectroscopy to select BEL quasars, extends the SDSS coverage to fainter magnitudes and lower redshifts, and recovers a more complete quasar population. The MIR-selected quasar sample peaks at $z\sim$1.4, and recovers a significant and…
Context. Quasars are spatially stationary, and they are essential objects in astrometry when defining reference frames. However, the census of quasars is far from complete. Mid-infared colors can be used to find quasar candidates because AGNs show a peculiar appearance in mid-infrared color, but these methods are incapable of separating quasars from AGNs. Aims. The aim of our study is to use astrometric and mid-infrared methods to select quasars and get a reliable quasar candidates catalog. Methods. We used a near-zero proper motion criterion in conjuction with WISE (all-sky Wide-field Infrare…
Here we explore the infrared (IR) properties of the progenitors of high-z quasar host galaxies. Adopting the cosmological, data constrained semi-analytic model GAMETE/QSOdust, we simulate several independent merger histories of a luminous quasar at z ~ 6, following black hole growth and baryonic evolution in all its progenitor galaxies. We find that a fraction of progenitor galaxies (about 0.4 objects per single luminous quasar) at 6.5 < z < 8 has an IR luminosity of L_IR > 10^13 Lsun (hyper-luminous IR galaxies; HyLIRGs). HyLIRGs progenitors reside in the most massive halos, with dark matter …
We report initial results from a large Gemini program to observe z>~5.7 quasars with GNIRS near-IR spectroscopy. Our sample includes 50 quasars with simultaneous ~0.85-2.5 micron spectra covering the rest-frame ultraviolet and major broad emission lines from Ly-alpha to MgII. We present spectral measurements for these quasars and compare to their lower-redshift counterparts at z=1.5-2.3. We find that when quasar luminosity is matched, there are no significant differences between the rest-UV spectra of z>~5.7 quasars and the low-z comparison sample. High-z quasars have similar continuum and emi…
Recent studies of luminous infrared-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) suggest that the reddest, most obscured objects display a higher angular clustering amplitude, and thus reside in higher-mass dark matter halos. This is a direct contradiction to the prediction of the simplest unification-by-orientation models of AGN and quasars. However, clustering measurements depend strongly on the "mask" that removes low-quality data and describes the sky and selection function. We find that applying a robust, conservative mask to WISE-selected quasars yields a weaker but still significant difference…
We present the results of our first year of quasar search in the on-going ESO public Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) and VISTA Kilo-Degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) surveys. These surveys are among the deeper wide-field surveys that can be used to uncovered large numbers of z~6 quasars. This allows us to probe a more common population of z~6 quasars that is fainter than the well-studied quasars from the main Sloan Digital Sky Survey. From this first set of combined survey catalogues covering ~250 deg^2 we selected point sources down to Z_AB=22 that had a very red i-Z (i-Z>2.2) colour. After follow-up…
We present a new algorithm to estimate quasar photometric redshifts (photo-$z$s), by considering the asymmetries in the relative flux distributions of quasars. The relative flux models are built with multivariate Skew-t distributions in the multi-dimensional space of relative fluxes as a function of redshift and magnitude. For 151,392 quasars in the SDSS, we achieve a photo-$z$ accuracy, defined as the fraction of quasars with the difference between the photo-$z$ $z_p$ and the spectroscopic redshift $z_s$, $|Δz| = |z_s-z_p|/(1+z_s)$ within 0.1, of 74%. Combining the WISE W1 and W2 infrared dat…
X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift $z=7.5$, although only limited to a few objects at $z>6.5$. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five $z>6.5$ quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional $z>6.5$ quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities ($L_{\rm bol}$), Eddington ratios ($λ_{\rm Edd}$), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) of these quasars using inf…
Polarized emission from a quasar is produced by wavelength-independent electron scattering surrounding its accretion disc, and thus avoid the contamination from its host galaxy and reveal the intrinsic emission spectrum of the accretion disc. Ultra-violet (UV) emission from a quasar is normally free from the contamination from its host galaxy. Polarization fraction of the quasar's disc emission can therefore be determined by comparing total UV emission with polarized visible to near-infrared (NIR) emission; and the resulting continuum spectrum from UV to infrared can reveal the theoretically e…
We present the results of a new spectroscopic survey for dusty intervening absorption systems, particularly damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs), towards reddened quasars. The candidate quasars are selected from mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer combined with optical and near-infrared photometry. Out of 1073 candidates, we secure low-resolution spectra for 108 using the Nordic Optical Telescope on La Palma, Spain. Based on the spectra, we are able to classify 100 of the 108 targets as quasars. A large fraction (50 %) is observed to have broad absorption lines (BALs)…
We obtained $XMM-Newton$ observations of two highly luminous dust-reddened quasars, F2M1113+1244 and F2M1656+3821, that appear to be in the early, transitional phase predicted by merger-driven models of quasar/galaxy co-evolution. These sources have been well-studied at optical through mid-infrared wavelengths and are growing relatively rapidly, with Eddington ratios $>30\%$. Their black hole masses are relatively small compared to their host galaxies placing them below the $M_{\rm BH} - L_{\rm bulge}$ relation. We find that for both sources, an absorbed power-law model with $1-3\%$ of the int…
We present the result of the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS) $z\sim6$ quasar survey, using the combination of the IMS near-infrared images and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) optical images. The traditional color-selection method results in 25 quasar candidates over $86$ deg$^{2}$. We introduce the corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) with the high-redshift quasar and late-type star models to prioritize the candidates efficiently. Among the color-selected candidates, seven plausible candidates finally passed the AICc selection of which three are known quasa…
Combining large-area optical quasar surveys with the new far-infrared Herschel-ATLAS Data Release 1, we search for an observational signature associated with the minority of quasars possessing bright far-infrared (FIR) luminosities. We find that FIR-bright quasars show broad CIV emission line blueshifts in excess of that expected from the optical luminosity alone, indicating particularly powerful nuclear outflows. The quasars show no signs of having redder optical colours than the general ensemble of optically-selected quasars, ruling out differences in line-of-sight dust within the host galax…
The star formation activity of the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provides valuable insights into the complex interconnections between black hole growth and galaxy evolution. A major obstacle arises from the difficulty of estimating accurate star formation rates in the presence of a strong AGN. Analyzing the $1-500\, μm$ spectral energy distributions and high-resolution mid-infrared spectra of low-redshift ($z < 0.5$) Palomar-Green quasars with bolometric luminosity $\sim 10^{44.5}-10^{47.5}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$, we find, from comparison with an independent star formation rate indi…
According to the unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), a putative dusty torus plays an important role in determining their external appearance. However, very limited information is known about the physical properties of the torus. We perform detailed decomposition of the infrared ($1-500\,μ$m) spectral energy distribution of 76 $z < 0.5$ Palomar-Green quasars, combining photometric data from 2MASS, WISE, and Herschel with Spitzer spectroscopy. Our fits favor recent torus spectral models that properly treat the different sublimation temperatures of silicates and graphite and consider …
We present JHK near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of 25 candidate Type II quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, using Triplespec on the Apache Point Observatory 3.5m telescope, FIRE at the Magellan/Baade 6.5m telescope, and GNIRS on Gemini. At redshifts of 2 < z < 3.4, our NIR spectra probe the rest-frame optical region of these targets, which were initially selected to have strong lines of CIV and Ly alpha, with FWHM<2000 km/s from the SDSS pipeline. We use the [OIII]5007 line shape as a model for the narrow line region emission, and find that \halpha\ consistently requires a broa…
The range of currently proposed active galactic nucleus (AGN) far-infrared templates results in uncertainties in retrieving host galaxy information from infrared observations and also undermines constraints on the outer part of the AGN torus. We discuss how to test and reconcile these templates. Physically, the fraction of the intrinsic AGN IR-processed luminosity compared with that from the central engine should be consistent with the dust-covering factor. In addition, besides reproducing the composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of quasars, a correct AGN IR template combined with an…
Studies of the most luminous quasars at high redshift directly probe the evolution of the most massive black holes in the early Universe and their connection to massive galaxy formation. However, extremely luminous quasars at high redshift are very rare objects. Only wide area surveys have a chance to constrain their population. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has so far provided the most widely adopted measurements of the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at $z>3$. However, a careful re-examination of the SDSS quasar sample revealed that the SDSS quasar selection is in fact missing a signi…
We present spectroscopic measurements for 226 sources from the Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph - Distant Quasar Survey (GNIRS-DQS). Being the largest uniform, homogeneous survey of its kind, it represents a flux-limited sample ($m_{i}$ ${\lesssim}$ 19.0 mag, $H$ ${\lesssim}$ 16.5 mag) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at 1.5 ${\lesssim}$ $z$ ${\lesssim}$ 3.5 with a monochromatic luminosity ($λL_λ$) at 5100 ${\unicode{xC5}}$ in the range of $10^{44} - 10^{46}$ erg $\rm{s}^{-1}$. A combination of the GNIRS and SDSS spectra covers principal quasar diagnostic features, chiefly the C IV …
Recent measurements of the dark matter halo masses of infrared-selected obscured quasars are in tension --- some indicate that obscured quasars have higher halo mass compared to their unobscured counterparts, while others find no difference. The former result is inconsistent with the simplest models of quasar unification that rely solely on viewing angle, while the latter may support such models. Here, using empirical relationships between dark matter halo and supermassive black hole masses, we provide a simple evolutionary picture that naturally explains these findings and is motivated by mor…
The infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of $z\gtrsim 5$ quasars can be reproduced by combining a low-metallicity galaxy template with a standard AGN template. The host galaxy is represented by Haro 11, a compact, moderately low metallicity, star-bursting galaxy that shares typical features of high-$z$ galaxies. For the vast majority of $z\gtrsim 5$ quasars, the AGN contribution is well modeled by a standard empirical template with the contamination of star formation in the infrared subtracted. Together, these two templates can separate the contributions from the host galaxy and the A…
Quasi--stellar objects (quasars) located behind nearby galaxies provide an excellent absolute reference system for astrometric studies, but they are difficult to identify because of fore- and background contamination. Deep wide--field, high angular resolution surveys spanning the entire area of nearby galaxies are needed to obtain a complete census of such quasars. We embarked on a program to expand the quasar reference system behind the Large and the Small Magellanic Clouds, the Magellanic Bridge, and the Magellanic Stream, connecting the Clouds with the Milky Way. Hundreds of quasar candidat…
Using the public data from the Herschel wide field surveys, we study the far-infrared properties of optical-selected quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Within the common area of $\sim 172~deg^2$, we have identified the far-infrared counterparts for 354 quasars, among which 134 are highly secure detections in the Herschel $250~μm$ band (signal-to-noise ratios $\geq5$). This sample is the largest far-infrared quasar sample of its kind, and spans a wide redshift range of $0.14{\leq}z\leq 4.7$. Their far-infrared spectral energy distributions, which are due to the cold dust components with…
As a step toward a comprehensive overview of the infrared diagnostics of the central engines and host galaxies of quasars at low redshift, we present Spitzer Space Telescope spectroscopic (5-40 μm) and photometric (24, 70 and 160 μm) measurements of all Palomar-Green (PG) quasars at z < 0.5 and 2MASS quasars at z < 0.3. We supplement these data with Herschel measurements at 160 μm. The sample is composed of 87 optically selected PG quasars and 52 near-IR selected 2MASS quasars. Here we present the data, measure the prominent spectral features, and separate emission due to star formation from t…
We aim to select quasar candidates based on the two large survey databases, Pan-STARRS and AllWISE. Exploring the distribution of quasars and stars in the color spaces, we find that the combination of infrared and optical photometry is more conducive to select quasar candidates. Two new color criterions (yW1W2 and izW1W2) are constructed to distinguish quasars from stars efficiently. With izW1W2, 98.30% of star contamination is eliminated, while 99.50% of quasars are retained, at least to the magnitude limit of our training set of stars. Based on the optical and infrared color features, we put…
We have constructed a sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars from the Faint Im- ages Radio Sky at Twenty-one centimetres (FIRST) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), over the H-ATLAS Phase 1 Area (9h, 12h and 14.5h). Using a stacking analysis we find a significant correlation between the far-infrared luminosity and 1.4-GHz luminosity for radio-loud quasars. Partial correlation analysis confirms the intrinsic correlation after removing the redshift contribution while for radio-quiet quasars no partial correlation is found. Using a single-temperature grey-body model …
We present our first results of the survey for high redshift quasars at $5 \lesssim {\rm z} \lesssim 5.7$. The search for quasars in this redshift range has been known to be challenging due to limitations of filter sets used in previous studies. We conducted a quasar survey for two specific redshift ranges, 4.60 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 5.40 and 5.50 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 6.05, using multi-wavelength data that include observations using custom-designed filters, $is$ and $iz$. Using these filters and a new selection technique, we were able to reduce the fraction of interlopers. Through optical spectroscopy, w…
This is the fourth paper in a series of publications aiming at discovering quasars at the epoch of reionization. In this paper, we expand our search for $z\sim 7$ quasars to the footprint of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Data Release One (DR1), covering $\sim 5000$ deg$^2$ of new area. We select $z\sim 7$ quasar candidates using deep optical, near-infrared (near-IR) and mid-IR photometric data from the DES DR1, the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS), the VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, the UKIRT InfraRed Deep Sky Surveys -- Large Area Survey (ULAS) and the unblurred coadds from th…
The unification model for powerful radio galaxies and radio-loud quasars postulates that these objects are intrinsically the same but viewed along different angles. Herschel Space Observatory data permit the assessment of that model in the far-infrared spectral window. We analyze photometry from Spitzer and Herschel for the distant 3CR hosts, and find that radio galaxies and quasars have different mid-infrared, but indistinguishable far-infrared colors. Both these properties, the former being orientation dependent and the latter orientation invariant, are in line with expectations from the uni…
We report on a Hubble Space Telescope search for rest-frame ultraviolet emission from the host galaxies of five far-infrared-luminous $z\simeq{}6$ quasars and the $z=5.85$ hot-dust free quasar SDSS J0005-0006. We perform 2D surface brightness modeling for each quasar using a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo estimator, to simultaneously fit and subtract the quasar point source in order to constrain the underlying host galaxy emission. We measure upper limits for the quasar host galaxies of $m_J>22.7$ mag and $m_H>22.4$ mag, corresponding to stellar masses of $M_\ast<2\times10^{11}M_\odot$. These stella…
We define a quasar-galaxy mixing diagram using the slopes of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from 1μm to 3000Å and from 1μm to 3μm in the rest frame. The mixing diagram can easily distinguish among quasar-dominated, galaxy-dominated and reddening-dominated SED shapes. By studying the position of the 413 XMM selected Type 1 AGN in the wide-field "Cosmic Evolution Survey" (COSMOS) in the mixing diagram, we find that a combination of the Elvis et al. (1994, hereafter E94) quasar SED with various contributions from galaxy emission and some dust reddening is remarkably effective in descr…
We present the infrared (IR) and X-ray properties of a sample of 33 mid-IR luminous quasars ($ν$L(6 micron)>6x10$^{44}$ erg/s) at redshift z~1-3, identified through detailed spectral energy distribution analyses of distant star-forming galaxies, using the deepest IR data from Spitzer and Herschel in the GOODS-Herschel fields. The aim is to constrain the fraction of obscured, and Compton-thick (CT, N$_H$>1.5x10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) quasars at the peak era of nuclear and star-formation activities. Despite being very bright in the mid-IR band, ~30% of these quasars are not detected in the extremely …
The interactions between radio jets and the interstellar medium play a defining role for the co-evolution of central supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, but observational constraints on these feedback processes are still very limited at redshifts $z > 2$. We investigate the radio-loud quasar PSO J352.4034-15.3373 at $z \sim 6$ at the edge of the Epoch of Reionization. This quasar is among the most powerful radio emitters and the first one with direct evidence of extended radio jets ($\sim$1.6 kpc) at these high redshifts. We analyze NOEMA and ALMA millimeter data targeting the CO…
We present a submillimetre continuum survey ('SCUBA2 High rEdshift bRight quasaR surveY', hereafter SHERRY) of 54 high redshift quasars at $5.6<z<6.9$ with quasar bolometric luminosities in a range of (0.2$-$$ 5)\times10^{14}\,L_{\odot}$, using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array-2 (SCUBA2) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. About 30% (16/54) of the sources are detected with a typical 850$μ$m rms sensitivity of 1.2 $\rm mJy\,beam^{-1}$ ($S\rm _{ν,850\,μm} = 4$-5 mJy, at $>3.5σ$). The new SHERRY detections indicate far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of $\rm 3.5\times10^{12}$ to $\rm 1…
Radio emission in the brightest radio quasars can be attributed to processes inherent to SMBHs, while the origins of the radio fluxes in quasars without radio detections is still uncertain. We investigate the radio-infrared continuum of LOFAR radio-detected quasars (RDQs) and LOFAR radio-undetected quasars (RUQs) in the $9.3\:\textrm{deg}^{2}$ NDWFS-Boötes field; RUQs are quasars that are individually undetected at $\geq5σ$ by LOFAR. We used a median image stacking procedure. This was done in the frequencies of 150 MHz, 325 MHz, 1.4 GHz and 3.0 GHz, and in nine infrared (ir) bands between $8$ …
The intergalactic medium (IGM) at $z\sim$ 5 to 6 is largely ionized, and yet the main source for the IGM ionization in the early universe is uncertain. Of the possible contributors are faint quasars with $-26 \lesssim M_{\rm 1450} \lesssim -23$, but their number density is poorly constrained at $z\sim5$. In this paper, we present our survey of faint quasars at $z\sim5$ in the European Large-Area {\it ISO} Survey-North 1 (ELAIS-N1) field over a survey area of 6.51 deg$^2$ and examine if such quasars can be the dominant source of the IGM ionization. We use the deep optical/near-infrared data of …
We present a detailed study of a high-redshift iron low-ionization broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) quasar (SDSS1214 at $z = 1.046$), including new interferometric $^{12}$CO $J$=2-1 observations, optical through far-infrared photometry, and mid-infrared spectroscopy. The CO line is well-fit by a single Gaussian centered 40 kms$^{-1}$ away from the systemic velocity and implies a total molecular gas mass of $M_\textrm{gas} = 7.3 \times 10^{10} \textrm{M}_\odot$. The infrared SED requires three components: an active galactic nucleus (AGN) torus, an AGN polar dust component, and a starburst. The s…
Changing-look quasars are a recently identified class of active galaxies in which the strong UV continuum and/or broad optical hydrogen emission lines associated with unobscured quasars either appear or disappear on timescales of months to years. The physical processes responsible for this behaviour are still debated, but changes in the black hole accretion rate or accretion disk structure appear more likely than changes in obscuration. Here we report on four epochs of spectroscopy of SDSS J110057.70-005304.5, a quasar at a redshift of $z=0.378$ whose UV continuum and broad hydrogen emission l…
