The DAV star, HS0507+0434B, was observed by Fu et al. (2013) in 2007 and from 2009 December to 2010 January. There were a total of six triplets with nearly equal split, which were identified as $l$ = 1 modes caused by rotation. In order to fit the six $l$ = 1 modes, grids of white dwarf models are generated by WDEC. For the core composition profiles, we choose the linear fittings to carbon profile of white dwarf models from MESA, which can be considered as results of real nuclear burning process. Coupled with diffusion equilibrium H/He and He/C mixtures, we make grids of models in WDEC and do asteroseismology works on HS0507+0434B. There is a total of 9.50 seconds error for our best-fitting model, which is smaller than the result (a total of 22.1 seconds error) of Fu et al. (2013), when fitting the six $l$ = 1 modes. The two other previous identified pulsation mode frequencies (286.1 s and 743.40 s) may also be well fitted by our best-fitting model. The model parameters are $T_{eff}$ = 11450 K, log$g$ = 8.088, $M_{*}$ = 0.640 $M_{\odot}$, log($M_{H}$/$M_{*}$) = -6, and log($M_{He}$/$M_{*}$) = -3.
Asteroseismology is a powerful tool to detect the inner structure of stars. It is also widely used to study white dwarfs. In this paper, we discuss the asteroseismology work of DAV stars. The detailed period to period fitting method is fully discussed, including the reliability to detect the inner structure of DAV stars. If we assume that all observed modes of some DAV star are the $l$ = 1 ones, the errors of model fitting will be always great. If we assume that the observed modes are composed of $l$ = 1 and 2 modes, the errors of model fitting will be small. However, there will be modes ident…
We present a large bank of chemical profiles and pulsation periods suited for asteroseismological studies of ZZ Ceti (or DAV) variable stars. Our background equilibrium DA white dwarf models are the result of fully evolutionary computations that take into account the complete history of the progenitor stars from the ZAMS. The models are characterized by self-consistent chemical structures from the centre to the surface, and cover a wide range of stellar masses, effective temperatures, and H envelope thicknesses. We present dipole and quadrupole pulsation $g$-mode periods comfortably covering t…
L19-2 is a DAV star, which has been intermittently observed from 1976 to 2013. Five independent pulsation modes of 350\,s, 192\,s, 143\,s, 118\,s, and 113\,s are identified. The five modes can be used to constrain the fitting models. The rates of period change can be obtained through the O-C method for modes of 192\,s and 113\,s, which can be used to study the evolution effect of DAV stars. Using the \texttt{WDEC} (2018 version), a large sample DAV star models are evolved. The theoretical modes are calculated and used to fit the observed modes. After fine model fittings, we obtain an optimal m…
EC14012-1446 was observed by Handler et al. in April 2004, June 2004, May 2005, and April 2007, and by Provencal et al. in 2008. We review the observations together and obtain 34 independent frequencies. According to the frequency splitting and the asymptotic period spacing law, we identify 6 $l$=1 modes, 4 $l$=2 modes, 5 $l$=3 modes, 10 $l$=1 or 2 modes. Grids of white dwarf models are generated by WDEC with H, He, C, O diffusion in a four-parameter space. The core compositions are directly from white dwarf models generated by MESA. The best-fitting model has $M_{*}$=0.710\,$M_{\odot}$, $T_{\…
The DAV star R808 was observed by 13 different telescopes for more than 170 hours in April 2008 on the WET run XCOV26. 25 independent pulsation frequencies were identified by this data set. We assumed 19 $m$ = 0 modes and performed an asteroseismological study on those 19 modes. We evolve grids of DAV star models by \texttt{WDEC} adopting the element diffusion scheme with pure and screened Coulomb potential effect. The core compositions are from white dwarf models evolved by \texttt{MESA}, which are thermal nuclear burning results. Our best fitting model is from the screened Coulomb potential …
We perform an asteroseismological study on the DAV star G117-B15A on the basis of a modern set of fully evolutionary DA white dwarf models that have consistent chemical profiles at the core and the envelope. We found an asteroseismological model for G117-B15A that closely reproduces its observed pulsation periods. Then, we use the most recently measured value of the rate of period change for the dominant mode of this pulsating star to impose a preliminary upper limit to the mass of the axion.
The internal structures of pulsating white dwarfs can be explored only with asteroseismology. Time series photometric observations were made for the pulsating DA white dwarf (ZZ Ceti star) WD~0246+326 during 9 nights in 2014 with a bi-site observation campaign. Eleven frequencies were detected including 1 triplet, 2 doublets, and 4 single modes, which are identified as either $l=1$ or $l=2$ modes with the complementarity of frequencies present in the literature. From the multiplets, the rotation period of \astrobj{WD~0246+326} is derived as $3.78\pm 0.11$ days. The average period spacing of th…
Seismic modeling of the Slowly Pulsating B-type star HD182255 yields strong constraints on the radial orders of the two dominant modes. For these frequencies, we derive also the empirical values of the complex nonadiabatic parameter $f$. These two seismic tools, i.e., pulsational frequencies and the associated values of $f$, allow to test available opacity data, chemical composition and overshooting efficiency.
The Sun is the most studied and well-known star, and as such, solar fundamental parameters are often used to bridge gaps in the knowledge of other stars, when these are required for modelling. However, the two most powerful and precise independent methodologies currently available to infer the internal solar structure are in disagreement. We aim to show the potential impact of composition choices in the overall evolution of a star, using the Sun as an example. To this effect, we create two Standard Solar Models and a comparison model using different combinations of metallicity and relative ele…
Turbulent mixing of chemical elements by convection has fundamental effects on the evolution of stars. The standard algorithm at present, mixing-length theory (MLT), is intrinsically local, and must be supplemented by extensions with adjustable parameters. As a step toward reducing this arbitrariness, we compare asteroseismically inferred internal structures of two Kepler slowly pulsating B stars (SPB's; $M\sim 3.25 M_\odot$) to predictions of 321D turbulence theory, based upon well-resolved, truly turbulent three-dimensional simulations (Arnett , et al. 2015, Christini, et al. 2016) which inc…
We present the results of complex seismic modelling of the Slowly Pulsating B-type star HD74560. The star pulsates in five frequencies detected in photometric observations. For all these frequencies, we identify the mode degree, $\ell$. For two of them, found also in spectroscopic data, we are able to derived the empirical values of the complex nonadiabatic parameter $f$. We test effects of chemical composition and opacity data. Our results show that the properties of seismic models of SPB stars differ significantly from those of the more massive $β$ Cephei stars.
Grids of DAV star models are evolved by \texttt{WDEC}, taking the element diffusion effect into account. The grid parameters are hydrogen mass log($M_{H}/M_{*}$), helium mass log($M_{He}/M_{*}$), stellar mass $M_{\rm *}$, and effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$ for DAV stars. The core compositions are from white dwarf models evolved by \texttt{MESA}. Therefore, those DAV star models evolved by \texttt{WDEC} have historically viable core compositions. Based on those DAV star models, we studied the rate of period change ($\dot{P}(k)$) for different values of H, He, $M_{\rm *}$, and $T_{\rm eff}$…
Most of low- and intermediate-mass stars that populate the Universe will end their lives as white dwarf stars. These ancient stellar remnants have encrypted inside a precious record of the evolutionary history of the progenitor stars, providing a wealth of information about the evolution of stars, star formation, and the age of a variety of stellar populations, such as our Galaxy and open and globular clusters. While some information like surface chemical composition, temperature and gravity of white dwarfs can be inferred from spectroscopy, the internal structure of these compact stars can be…
Chemical turbulent mixing induced by rotation can affect the internal distribution of mu near the energy-generating core of main-sequence stars, having an effect on the evolutionary tracks similar to that of overshooting. However, this mixing also leads to a smoother chemical composition profile near the edge of the convective core, which is reflected in the behaviour of the buoyancy frequency and, therefore, in the frequencies of gravity modes. We show that for rotational velocities typical of main-sequence B-type pulsating stars, the signature of a rotationally induced mixing significantly p…
The CoRoT satellite is collecting precise time-resolved photometry for tens of asteroseismology targets. To ensure a correct interpretation of the CoRoT data, the atmospheric parameters, chemical compositions, and rotational velocities of the stars must be determined. The main goal of the ground-based seismology support program for the CoRoT mission was to obtain photometric and spectroscopic data for stars in the fields monitored by the satellite. These ground-based observations were collected in the GAUDI archive. High-resolution spectra of more than 200 B-type stars are available in this da…
We use \texttt{WDEC} to evolve grids of DAV star models adopting the element diffusion scheme with pure and screened Coulomb potential effect. The core compositions are thermonuclear burning results which are derived from \texttt{MESA}. \texttt{MESA} yields composition profiles that the version of WDEC used in this work could not accommodate (most notably the presence of helium in the core of the model). According to the theory of rotational splitting, Fu et al. identified 6 triplets for a DAV star HS 0507+0434B based on 206\,h photometric data. The grids of DAV star models are used to fit the…

Recent progress in the seismic interpretation of field beta Cep stars has resulted in improvements of the physics in the stellar structure and evolution models of massive stars. Further asteroseismic constraints can be obtained from studying ensembles of stars in a young open cluster, which all have similar age, distance and chemical composition. We present an observational asteroseismology study based on the discovery of numerous multi-periodic and mono-periodic B-stars in the open cluster NGC 884. We describe a thorough investigation of the pulsational properties of all B-type stars in the c…
Investigating Gaia EDR3 parallax systematics using asteroseismology of Cool Giant Stars observed by Kepler, K2, and TESS I. Asteroseismic distances to 12,500 red-giant stars
An increasing number of white dwarf stars show atmospheric chemical composition polluted by heavy elements accreted from debris disk material. The existence of such debris disks strongly suggests the presence of one or more planet(s) whose gravitational interaction with rocky planetesimals is responsible for their disruption by tidal effect. The ZZ Ceti pulsator and polluted DAZ white dwarf GD 133 is a good candidate for searching for such a potential planet. We started in 2011 a photometric follow-up of its pulsations. As a result of this work in progress, we used the data gathered from 2011 …
Three groups of DAV star models are evolved with time-dependent element diffusion by \texttt{WDEC}. The core compositions of these models are directly from white dwarf models evolved by \texttt{MESA}, which are results of thermonuclear burning. Based on these DAV star models, we try to study the dispersion of period spacing. The thickness of hydrogen atmosphere can seriously affect the deviation degree of minimal period spacings. The minimal period spacings dominate the dispersion of period spacing. The thinner the hydrogen atmosphere, basically, the more dispersive the period spacing. Standar…
Lithium has confused scientists for decades at almost each scale of the universe. Lithium-rich giants are peculiar stars with lithium abundances over model prediction. A large fraction of lithium-rich low-mass evolved stars are traditionally supposed to be red giant branch (RGB) stars. Recent studies, however, report that red clump (RC) stars are more frequent than RGB. Here, we present a uniquely large systematic study combining the direct asteroseismic analysis with the spectroscopy on the lithium-rich stars. The majority of lithium-rich stars are confirmed to be RCs, whereas RGBs are minor.…
Stellar population astrophysics (SPA) with the TNG. Abundance analysis of nearby red giants and red clump stars: combining high resolution spectroscopy and asteroseismology
This study is the first of a series of papers that provide a technique to analyse the mixed-modes frequency spectra and characterise the structure of stars on the subgiant and red-giant branches. We define seismic indicators, relevant of the stellar structure and study their evolution on a grid of models. The proposed method, EGGMiMoSA, relies on the asymptotic description of mixed modes, defines initial guesses for the parameters, and uses a Levenberg-Marquardt technique to adjust the mixed-modes pattern efficiently. We follow the evolution of the mixed-modes parameters along a grid of models…
The base of the convection zone is a source of acoustic glitches in the asteroseismic frequency spectra of solar-like oscillators, allowing one to precisely measure the acoustic depth to the feature. We examine the sensitivity of the depth of the convection zone to mass, stellar abundances, and input physics, and in particular, the use of a measurement of the acoustic depth to the CZ as an atmosphere-independent, absolute measure of stellar metallicities. We find that for low mass stars on the main sequence with $0.4 M_{\odot} \le M \le 1.6 M_{\odot}$, the acoustic depth to the base of the con…
The GIII red giant star epsilon Oph has been found to exhibit several modes of oscillation by the MOST mission. We interpret the observed frequencies of oscillation in terms of theoretical radial p-mode frequencies of stellar models. Evolutionary models of this star, in both shell H-burning and core He-burning phases of evolution, are constructed using as constraints a combination of measurements from classical ground-based observations (for luminosity, temperature, and chemical composition) and seismic observations from MOST. Radial frequencies of models in either evolutionary phase can repro…
The cores of luminous B and A-type (BA) supergiant stars are the seeds of later core collapse supernovae. Thus, constraining the near-core conditions in this class of stars can place tighter constraints on the size, mass and chemical composition of supernova remnants. Asteroseismology of these massive stars is one possible approach into such investigations. Recently, Moravveji et al. (2012, hereafter Paper I) extracted 19 significant frequencies from a 6-year radial velocity monitoring or Rigel (βOri, B8 Ia). The periods they determined broadly range from 1.22 to 74.74 days. Based on our diffe…
Grids of DOV star models are evolved by \texttt{WDEC} with fixed atmospheric constituent to the spectral values of $X_{C}/X_{He}/X_{O}$ = 50/33/17. The core compositions are from white dwarf models at highest $T_{eff}$ evolved by \texttt{MESA}. The eigenfrequencies are calculated and used to fit the observed modes. Based on 264.1 hours of photometric observations on PG 1159-035, Winget et al. identified 125 individual frequencies. Costa et al. identified 198 pulsation modes for PG 1159-035 according to the WET photometric data from 1983, 1985, 1989, and 2002. Both of them derived frequency spl…
Ultra-massive hydrogen-rich (DA spectral type) white dwarf (WD) stars ($M_{\star} > 1M_{\odot}$) coming from single-star evolution are expected to harbor cores made of $^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne, resulting from semi-degenerate carbon burning when the progenitor star evolves through the super asymptotic giant branch (S-AGB) phase. These stars are expected to be crystallized by the time they reach the ZZ Ceti instability strip ($T_{\rm eff} \sim 12\,500$ K). Theoretical models predict that crystallization leads to a separation of $^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne in the core of ultra-massive WDs, which impacts…
Very metal-poor halo stars are the best candidates for being among the oldest objects in our Galaxy. Samples of halo stars with age determination and detailed chemical composition measurements provide key information for constraining the nature of the first stellar generations and the nucleosynthesis in the metal-poor regime.} Age estimates are very uncertain and are available for only a small number of metal-poor stars. Here we present the first results of a pilot program aimed at deriving precise masses, ages and chemical abundances for metal-poor halo giants using asteroseismology, and high…
Recent asteroseismic observations by the $\it Kepler$ space mission have revealed the dip fine structure in the period-spacing versus period diagram of rapidly rotating $γ$ Doradus stars. Following the successful reproduction of the dip structure by numerical calculations in previous studies, we present in this paper the physical mechanism of how the dip is formed as a result of the interaction between the gravito-inertial waves in the radiative envelope and the pure inertial waves in the convective core. We analytically describe the wave solutions in both of the radiative envelope and the con…
The structural stratification of a solar-type main sequence star primarily depends on its mass and chemical composition. The surface heavy element abundances of the solar-type stars are reasonably well determined using conventional spectroscopy, however the second most abundant element helium is not. This is due to the fact that the envelope temperature of such stars is not high enough to excite helium. Since the helium abundance of a star affects its structure and subsequent evolution, the uncertainty in the helium abundance of a star makes estimates of its global properties (mass, radius, ag…
The detection of mixed oscillation modes offers a unique insight into the internal structure of core helium burning (CHeB) stars. The stellar structure during CHeB is very uncertain because the growth of the convective core, and/or the development of a semiconvection zone, is critically dependent on the treatment of convective boundaries. In this study we calculate a suite of stellar structure models and their non-radial pulsations to investigate why the predicted asymptotic g-mode $\ell = 1$ period spacing $ΔΠ_1$ is systematically lower than is inferred from Kepler field stars. We find that o…
Asteroseismology is a powerful tool to infer the evolutionary status and chemical stratification of white dwarf (WD) stars, and to explore the physical processes that lead to their formation. This is particularly true for the variable H-rich atmosphere (DA) WDs, known as DAV or ZZ Ceti stars. We present a new grid of DA WD models that take into account the last advances in the modeling and input physics of both the progenitor and the WD stars, thus avoiding and improving several shortcomings present in the set of DA WD models employed in the asteroseismological analyses of ZZ Ceti stars we car…
We have computed a grid of theoretical models to fit the twelve oscillation modes of HIP 80088 observed by K2. HIP 80088 is determined to be a pre-main sequence star, in which CN cycle has not arrived at the equilibrium state. Mass fractions of C12 and N14 in metal composition are 0.1277$^{+0.0064}_{-0.0049}$ and 0.1092$^{+0.0057}_{-0.0074}$ respectively, indicating that twenty-eight percent of C12 have turned into N14. Meanwhile, our fitting results show that physical parameters of HIP 80088 converge to a small range: $M$ = 1.68$-$1.78 $M _{\odot}$, $Z$ = 0.015$-$0.018, $\upsilon_{\rm e}$ = 1…
We compute new chemical profiles for the core and envelope of white dwarfs appropriate for pulsational studies of ZZ Ceti stars. These profiles are extracted from the complete evolution of progenitor stars, evolved through the main sequence and the thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stages, and from time-dependent element diffusion during white dwarf evolution. We discuss the importance of the initial-final mass relationship for the white dwarf carbon-oxygen composition. In particular, we find that the central oxygen abundance may be underestimated by about 15% if the white dwarf …
We report on the analysis of 34 years of photometric observations of the pulsating helium atmosphere white dwarf GD358. The complete data set includes archival data from 1982-2006, and 1195.2 hours of new observations from 2007- 2016. From this data set, we extract 15 frequencies representing g-mode pulsation modes, adding 4 modes to the 11 modes known previously. We present evidence that these 15 modes are ell = 1 modes, 13 of which belong to a consecutive sequence in radial overtone k. We perform a detailed asteroseismic analysis using models that include parameterized, complex carbon and ox…
Our goal is to perform in-depth ensemble asteroseismology of the young open cluster NGC2244 with the 2-wheel Kepler mission. While the nominal Kepler mission already implied a revolution in stellar physics for solar-type stars and red giants, it was not possible to perform asteroseismic studies of massive OB stars because such targets were carefully avoided in the FoV in order not to disturb the exoplanet hunting. Now is an excellent time to fill this hole in mission capacity and to focus on the metal factories of the Universe, for which stellar evolution theory is least adequate. Our white pa…
The characterization of the growing number of newly discovered exoplanets ---nature, internal structure, formation and evolution--- strongly relies on the properties of their host-star, i.e. its mass, radius and age. These latter can be inferred from stellar evolution models constrained by the observed global parameters of the host-star --- effective temperature, photospheric chemical composition, surface gravity and/or luminosity--- and by its mean density inferred from the transit analysis. Additional constraints for the models can be provided by asteroseismic observations of the host-star. …
Ultra-massive white dwarfs are relevant for their role as type Ia Supernova progenitors, the occurrence of physical processes in the asymptotic giant-branch phase, the existence of high-field magnetic white dwarfs, and the occurrence of double white dwarf mergers. Some hydrogen-rich ultra-massive white dwarfs are pulsating stars, and as such, they offer the possibility of studying their interiors through asteroseismology. On the other hand, pulsating helium-rich ultra-massive white dwarfs could be even more attractive objects for asteroseismology if they were found, as they should be hotter an…
White dwarfs correspond to the final stages of stellar evolution of solar-type stars. In these objects, production of energy by nuclear burning has ended which means that a white dwarf simply cools down over the course of the next billion years. It is now known that white dwarfs spend some of their cooling history in an instability strip. The pulsating white dwarfs with an hydrogen atmosphere (called DAV or ZZ Ceti stars) show non-radial oscillation modes with periods in the range 100 - 1200s. In this work we try to illustrate how the oscillation p-mode frequencies of idealized white dwarf mod…
Investigating Gaia EDR3 parallax systematics using asteroseismology of Cool Giant Stars observed by Kepler, K2, and TESS II. Deciphering Gaia parallax systematics using red clump stars
The evolved solar-type stars 16 Cyg A & B have long been studied as solar analogs, yielding a glimpse into the future of our own Sun. The orbital period of the binary system is too long to provide meaningful dynamical constraints on the stellar properties, but asteroseismology can help because the stars are among the brightest in the Kepler field. We present an analysis of three months of nearly uninterrupted photometry of 16 Cyg A & B from the Kepler space telescope. We extract a total of 46 and 41 oscillation frequencies for the two components respectively, including a clear detection of oct…
White dwarfs are the burnt out cores of Sun-like stars and are the final fate of 97% of all stars in our Galaxy. The internal structure and composition of white dwarfs are hidden by their high gravities, which causes all elements, apart from the lightest ones, to settle out of their atmospheres. The most direct method to probe the inner structure of stars and white dwarfs in detail is via asteroseismology. Here we present the first known pulsating white dwarf in an eclipsing binary system, enabling us to place extremely precise constraints on the mass and radius of the white dwarf from the lig…
Low amplitude is the defining characteristic of solar-like oscillations. The space projects $Kepler$ and $CoRoT$ give us a great opportunity to successfully detect such oscillations in numerous targets. Achievements of asteroseismology depend on new discoveries of connections between the oscillation frequencies and stellar properties. In the previous studies, the frequency of the maximum amplitude and the large separation between frequencies were used for this purpose. In the present study, we confirm that the large separation between the frequencies has two minima at two different frequency v…
Binary star systems are important for understanding stellar structure and evolution, and are especially useful when oscillations can be detected and analysed with asteroseismology. However, only four systems are known in which solar-like oscillations are detected in both components. Here, we analyse the fifth such system, HD 176465, which was observed by Kepler. We carefully analysed the system's power spectrum to measure individual mode frequencies, adapting our methods where necessary to accommodate the fact that both stars oscillate in a similar frequency range. We also modelled the two sta…
We use photometry from the Kepler Mission to study oscillations in gamma Doradus stars. Some stars show remarkably clear sequences of g modes and we use period echelle diagrams to measure period spacings and identify rotationally split multiplets with l=1 and l=2. We find small deviations from regular period spacings that arise from the gradient in the chemical composition just outside the convective core. We also find stars for which the period spacing shows a strong linear trend as a function of period, consistent with relatively rapid rotation. Overall, the results indicate it will be possi…
We report the discovery of the first pulsating extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarf (WD), SDSS J184037.78+642312.3 (hereafter J1840). This DA (hydrogen-atmosphere) WD is by far the coolest and the lowest-mass pulsating WD, with Teff = 9100 \pm 170 K and log g = 6.22 \pm 0.06, which corresponds to a mass ~ 0.17 Msun. This low-mass pulsating WD greatly extends the DAV (or ZZ Ceti) instability strip, effectively bridging the log g gap between WDs and main sequence stars. We detect high-amplitude variability in J1840 on timescales exceeding 4000 s, with a non-sinusoidal pulse shape. Our observatio…
Asteroseismology of stars in clusters has been a long-sought goal because the assumption of a common age, distance and initial chemical composition allows strong tests of the theory of stellar evolution. We report results from the first 34 days of science data from the Kepler Mission for the open cluster NGC 6819 -- one of four clusters in the field of view. We obtain the first clear detections of solar-like oscillations in the cluster red giants and are able to measure the large frequency separation and the frequency of maximum oscillation power. We find that the asteroseismic parameters allo…
