We examine the stability and dynamics of a family of crossed dark solitons in a harmonically confined Bose-Einstein condensate in two dimensions. Working in a regime where the fundamental snake instability is suppressed, we show the existence of an instability which leads to an interesting collapse and revival of the initial state for the fundamental case of two crossed solitons. The instability originates from the singular point where the solitons cross, and we characterise it by examining the Bogoliubov spectrum. Finally, we extend the treatment to systems of higher symmetry.
It has been conjectured that the Pauli exclusion principle alone may be responsible for a particular geometric arrangement of confined systems of identical fermions even when there is no interaction between them. These geometric structures, called Pauli crystals, are predicted for a two-dimensional system of free fermions under harmonic confinement. It is assumed that the system consists of neutral fermionic atoms with their spins frozen (spin-polarized) in order to avoid any form of electromagnetic interaction. These crystalline patterns emerge as the most frequent configurations seen in a la…
We model the dynamics of attractively interacting ultracold bosonic atoms in a quasi-one-dimensional wave-guide with additional harmonic trapping. Initially, we prepare the system in its ground state and then shift the zero of the harmonic trap and switch on an additional narrow scattering potential near the center of the trap. After colliding with the barrier twice, we propose to measure the number of atoms opposite to the initial condition. Quantum-enhanced interferometry with quantum bright solitons allows us to predict detection of an offset of the scattering potential with considerably in…

By exact numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in 3D, we assess the validity of 1D and 2D approximations in the study of Bose-Einstein condensates confined in harmonic trap potentials. Typically, these approximations are performed when one or more of the harmonic frequencies are much greater than the remaining ones, using arguments based on the adiabatic evolution of the initial approximated state. Deviations from the 3D solution are evaluated as a function of both the effective interaction strength and the ratio between the trap frequencies that define the reduced dimensio…
System of a two-flavor mixture of ultra-cold fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is studied in the frame of the center of mass. We present a numerical method of obtaining energetic spectra in this frame for an arbitrary mass ratio of fermionic species. We identify a specific invariant encoded in many-body correlations which enable one to determine an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian and to label excitations of the center of mass. The tool presented may be particularly useful in experimental analysis of the interparticle interactions which do not affect the center of mass excitati…
We unravel the nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of two harmonically confined bosons in one spatial dimension when performing an interaction quench from finite repulsive to attractive interaction strengths and vice versa. A closed analytical form of the expansion coefficients of the time-evolved two-body wavefunction is derived, while its dynamics is determined in terms of an expansion over the postquench eigenstates. For both quench scenarios the temporal evolution is analyzed by inspecting the one- and two-body reduced density matrices and densities, the momentum distribution and the fidelity.…

We study a harmonically confined Bose-Bose mixture using quantum Monte Carlo methods. Our results for the density profiles are systematically compared with mean-field predictions derived through the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the same conditions. The phase space as a function of the interaction strengths and the relation between masses is quite rich. The miscibility criterion for the homogeneous system applies rather well to the system, with some discrepancies close to the critical line for separation. We observe significant differences between the mean-field results and the Monte Carlo ones…
We experimentally investigate the dynamics of spin solitary waves (magnetic solitons) in a harmonically trapped, binary superfluid mixture. We measure the in-situ density of each pseudospin component and their relative local phase via an interferometric technique we developed, and as such, fully characterise the magnetic solitons while they undergo oscillatory motion in the trap. Magnetic solitons exhibit non-dispersive, dissipationless long-time dynamics. By imprinting multiple magnetic solitons in our ultracold gas sample, we engineer binary collisions between solitons of either same or oppo…
We explore theoretically how to tune the dynamics of a quasi one-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) due to an additional red- and blue-detuned Hermite-Gaussian dimple trap (HGdT). To this end we study a BEC in a highly non-equilibrium state, which is not possible in a traditional harmonically confined trap. Our system is modeled by a time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is numerically solved by the Crank-Nicolson method in both imaginary and real time. For equilibrium, we obtain a condensate with two bumps/dips which are induced by the chosen TEM$_{01}$ …
We unravel the stationary properties and the interaction quench dynamics of two bosons, confined in a two-dimensional anisotropic harmonic trap. A transcendental equation is derived giving access to the energy spectrum and revealing the dependence of the energy gaps on the anisotropy parameter. The relation between the two and the one dimensional scattering lengths as well as the Tan contacts is established. The contact, capturing the two-body short range correlations, shows an increasing tendency for a larger anisotropy. Subsequently, the interaction quench dynamics from attractive to repulsi…
We present a method to detect the presence and depth of dark solitons within repulsive one-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. For a system with one soliton, we prove that the shift of the density in Fourier space directly maps onto the depth of the soliton. For multi-soliton systems, combining our spectral method with established imaging techniques, the character of the solitons present in the condensate can be determined. We verify that the detection of solitons by the spectral shift works in the presence of waves induced by density engineering methods. Finally we dis…
Schrödinger equation for Bose gas with repulsive contact interactions in one-dimensional space may be solved analytically with the help of the Bethe ansatz if we impose periodic boundary conditions. It was shown that in such a system there exist many-body eigenstates directly corresponding to dark soliton solutions of the mean-field equation. The system is still integrable if one switches from the periodic boundary conditions to an infinite square well potential. The corresponding eigenstates were constructed by M. Gaudin. We analyze weak interaction limit of Gaudin's solutions and identify pa…
Numerically we investigate the ground state of effective one-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi coupled two pseudo-spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) under the effect of harmonic traps. For both signs of the interaction, density profiles of SO and Rabi coupled BECs in harmonic potentials, which simulate a real experimental situation are obtained. The harmonic trap causes a strong reduction of the multi-peak nature of the condensate and it increases its density. For repulsive interactions, the increase of SO coupling results in an uncompressed less dense condensate and with increased mul…
It was recently found that the spin-orbit (SO) coupling can help to create stable matter-wave solitons in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in the two-dimensional (2D) free space. Being induced by external laser illumination, the effective SO coupling can be applied too in a spatially confined area. Using numerical methods and the variational approximation (VA), we build families of 2D solitons of the semi-vortex (SV) and mixed-mode (MM) types, and explore their stability, assuming that the SO-coupling strength is confined in the radial direction as a Gaussian. The most essential result is iden…
We report on the dynamics of thermalization by extending a generalization of the Caldeira-Leggett model, developed in the context of cold atomic gases confined in a harmonic trap, to higher dimensions. Universal characteristics en route to thermalization which appear to be independent of dimensionality are highlighted, which additionally suggest a scaling analogous to turbulent mixing in fluid dynamics. We then focus on features dependent on dimensionality, with particular regard to the role of angular momentum of the two atomic clouds, having in mind the goal of efficient thermalization betwe…
We report on the existence and stability of multidimensional bound solitonic states in harmonically-trapped scalar Bose-Einstein condensates. Their equilibrium separation, as a measure of the strength of the soliton-soliton or the solitonic vortex-vortex interaction, is provided for varying chemical potential $μ$. Static bound dark solitons are shown to be dynamically stable in elongated condensates within a range of intermediate (repulsive) interparticle-interaction strength. Beyond this range the snaking instability manifests during the time evolution of the planar solitons and produces the …
The time-evolution of few number of interacting, harmonically confined one-dimensional bosons is numerically obtained for arbitrary two-body $δ-$potential interaction strengths. It is demonstrated that the period of the motion in a Newton's cradle configuration undergoes two crossovers as a function of interactions. Furthermore, through the evaluation of the structure factor, the dependence of Bragg-scattering peaks on the interaction strength ranging from the weak coupling regime to the impenetrable Tonks-Girardeau case is illustrated.
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interactions confined in a 1D ring where a Dirac delta is rotating at constant speed. The spectrum of stationary solutions in the delta comoving frame is analyzed in terms of the nonlinear coupling, delta velocity, and delta strength, which may take positive and negative values. It is organized into a set of energy levels conforming a multiple swallowtail structure in parameter space, consisting in bright solitons, gray and dark solitonic trains, and vortices. Analytical expressions in terms Jacobi elliptic functions are provided for the wa…
Instabilities of vortex-ring-bright coherent structures in harmonically trapped two-component three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates are studied numerically within the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and interpreted analytically. Interestingly, the filled vortex core with a sufficiently large amount of the bright component is observed to reduce the parametric interval of stability of the vortex ring. We have identified the mechanisms of several linear instabilities and one nonlinear parametric instability in this connection. Two of the linear instabilities are qualitatively different f…
The critical properties of the phase transition from a normal gas to a BEC (superfluid) of a harmonically confined Bose gas are addressed with the knowledge of an equation of state of the underlying homogeneous Bose fluid. It is shown that while the presence of the confinement trap arrests the usual divergences of the isothermal compressibility and heat capacities, the critical behavior manifests itself now in the divergence of derivatives of the mentioned susceptibilities. This result is illustrated with a mean-field like model of an equation of state for the homogeneous particle density as a…
In this work we present a systematic study of the three-dimensional extension of the ring dark soliton examining its existence, stability, and dynamics in isotropic harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Detuning the chemical potential from the linear limit, the ring dark soliton becomes unstable immediately, but can be fully stabilized by an external cylindrical potential. The ring has a large number of unstable modes which are analyzed through spectral stability analysis. Furthermore, a few typical destabilization dynamical scenarios are revealed with a number of interesting vortica…
We explore stability regions for solitons in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a spatially confined region carrying a combination of self-focusing cubic and septimal terms, with a quintic one of either focusing or defocusing sign. This setting can be implemented in optical waveguides based on colloids of nanoparticles. The solitons stability is identified by solving linearized equations for small perturbations, and is found to fully comply with the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. In the limit case of tight confinement of the nonlinearity, results are obtained in an analytical form, approxi…
A domain wall of relative phase in a flattened harmonically-trapped Bose-Einstein condensed mixture of two atomic hyperfine states, subject to a stationary Rabi coupling of intensity $Ω$, is predicted to decay through two different mechanisms. For small values of $Ω$ the instability has an energetic nature and is associated with the formation of a vortex-antivortex pair of the same atomic hyperfine states, whose motion inside the trap causes the emergence of magnetization, the bending of the domain wall and its consequent fragmentation. For large values of $Ω$ the domain wall instead undergoes…
We present the phase diagram, the underlying stability and magnetic properties as well as the dynamics of nonlinear solitary wave excitations arising in the distinct phases of a harmonically confined spinor $F=1$ Bose-Einstein condensate. Particularly, it is found that nonlinear excitations in the form of dark-dark-bright solitons exist in the antiferromagnetic and in the easy-axis phase of a spinor gas, being generally unstable in the former while possessing stability intervals in the latter phase. Dark-bright-bright solitons can be realized in the polar and the easy-plane phases as unstable …
In a shaken Bose-Einstein condensate, confined in a vibrating trap, there can appear different nonlinear coherent modes. Here we concentrate on two types of such coherent modes, vortex ring solitons and vortex rings. In a cylindrical trap, vortex ring solitons can be characterized as nonlinear Hermite-Laguerre modes, whose description can be done by means of optimized perturbation theory. The energy, required for creating vortex ring solitons, is larger than that needed for forming vortex rings. This is why, at a moderate excitation energy, vortex rings appear before vortex ring solitons. The …
Dark solitons in superfluid Bose gases decay through the snake instability mechanism, unless they are strongly confined. Recent experiments in superfluid Fermi gases have also interpreted soliton decay via this mechanism. However, we show using both an effective field numerical simulation and a perturbative analysis that there is a qualitative difference between soliton decay in the BEC- and BCS-regimes. On the BEC-side of the interaction domain, the characteristic snaking deformations are induced by fluctuations of the amplitude of the order parameter, while on the BCS-side, fluctuations of t…
We study spinless fermions with repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions perturbed by an impurity particle or a local potential quench. Using the numerical time-evolving block decimation method and a simplified analytic model, we show that the pertubations create a soliton-antisoliton pair. If solitons are already present in the bath, the two excitations have a drastically different dynamics: The antisoliton does not annihilate with the solitons and is therefore confined close to its origin while the soliton excitation propagates. We discuss the consequences for experiments with ultracold gases…
Attractive Bose-Einstein condensates can host two types of macroscopic self-bound states of different nature: bright solitons and quantum liquid droplets. Here, we investigate the connection between them with a Bose-Bose mixture confined in an optical waveguide. We develop a simple theoretical model to show that, depending on atom number and interaction strength, solitons and droplets can be smoothly connected or remain distinct states coexisting only in a bi-stable region. We experimentally measure their spin composition, extract their density for a broad range of parameters and map out the b…
We study relaxation dynamics in one-dimensional Bose gases, formulated as an initial value problem for the classical non-linear Schrödinger equation. We propose an analytic technique which takes into account the exact spectrum of non-linear modes, that is both soliton excitations and dispersive continuum of radiation modes. Our method relies on the exact large-time asymptotics and uses the so-called dressing transformation to account for the solitons. The obtained results are quantitatively compared with the predictions of the linearized approach in the framework of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes t…
