Hybrid Inflation is a two-field model where inflation ends by a tachyonic instability, the duration of which is determined by stochastic effects and has important observational implications. Making use of the recursive approach to the stochastic formalism presented in Ref. [1], these effects are consistently computed. Through an analysis of back-reaction, this method is shown to converge in the valley but points toward an (expected) instability in the waterfall. It is further shown that quasi-stationarity of the auxiliary field distribution breaks down in the case of a short-lived waterfall. It is found that the typical dispersion of the waterfall field at the critical point is then diminished, thus increasing the duration of the waterfall phase and jeopardizing the possibility of a short transition. Finally, it is found that stochastic effects worsen the blue tilt of the curvature perturbations by an order one factor when compared with the usual slow-roll contribution.
The measured values of the Higgs and top quark masses imply that the Standard Model potential is very likely to be unstable at large Higgs values. This is particularly problematic during inflation, which sources large perturbations of the Higgs. The instability could be cured by a threshold effect induced by a scalar with a large vacuum expectation value and directly connected to the Standard Model through a Higgs portal coupling. However, we find that in a minimal model in which the scalar generates inflation, this mechanism does not stabilize the potential because the mass required for infla…
In hybrid inflation, initial field values leading to sufficiently long inflation were thought be fine-tuned in a narrow band along the inflationary valley. A re-analysis of this problem has shown that there exists a non negligible proportion of successful initial conditions exterior to the valley, organized in a complex structure with fractal boundaries, and whose origin has been explained. Their existence in a large part of the parameter space has been demonstrated using a bayesian Monte-Carlo-Markov-Chain (MCMC) method, and natural bounds on potential parameters have been established. Moreov…
Based on the effective field theory (EFT) of nonsingular cosmologies, we build a stable model, without the ghost and gradient instabilities, of bounce inflation (inflation is preceded by a cosmological bounce). We perform a full simulation for the evolution of scalar perturbation, and find that the perturbation spectrum has a large-scale suppression (as expected), which is consistent with the power deficit of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) TT-spectrum at low multipoles, but unexpectedly, it also shows itself one marked lower valley, which actually provides a better fit to the dip at mul…
Inflationary $α$-attractor models in supergravity, which provide excellent fits to the latest observational data, are based on the Poincare disk hyperbolic geometry. We refine these models by constructing Kahler potentials with built-in inflaton shift symmetry and by making a canonical choice of the goldstino Kahler potential. The refined models are stable with respect to all scalar fields at all $α$, no additional stabilization terms are required. The scalar potential V has a nearly Minkowski minimum at small values of the inflaton field $φ$, and an infinitely long dS valley of constant depth…
In order to generate more than 60 e-folds of accelerated expansion in original hybrid inflation, 2-fields trajectories are usually required to be initially fine-tuned in a very narrow band along the inflationary valley or in some isolated points outside it. From a more precise investigation of the dynamics, these points which can cover a non-negligible proportion of the space of sub-planckian initial field values, depending on the potential parameters, are shown to be organised in connected domains with fractal boundaries. They correspond to trajectories first falling towards the bottom of the…
We present a new, recursive approach to stochastic inflation which is self-consistent and solves multiple problems which plagued a certain number of previous studies, in particular in realistic contexts where the background spacetime is taken to be dynamical, where there is more than one field present, especially with a mass hierarchy, or where the role played by back-reaction is suspected to be important. We first review the formalism of stochastic inflation as it is usually heuristically presented, that is, deriving the Langevin equations from the field equations of motion, and summarize pre…
The dynamics of hybrid models is usually approximated by the evolution of a scalar field slowly rolling along a nearly flat valley. Inflation ends with a waterfall phase, due to a tachyonic instability. This final phase is usually assumed to be nearly instantaneous. In this thesis, we go beyond these approximations and analyze the exact 2-field dynamics of hybrid models. Several effects are put in evidence: 1) the possible slow-roll violations along the valley induce the non existence of inflation at small field values. Provided super-planckian fields, the scalar spectrum of the original model…
We show that the initial field values required to produce inflation in the two fields original hybrid model, and its supergravity F-term extension, do not suffer from any fine-tuning problem, even when the fields are restricted to be sub-planckian and for almost all potential parameter values. This is due to the existence of an initial slow-roll violating evolution which has been overlooked so far. Due to the attractor nature of the inflationary valley, these trajectories end up producing enough accelerated expansion of the universe. By numerically solving the full non-linear dynamics, we show…
If the very early Universe is dominated by the non-minimally coupled Higgs field and Starobinsky's curvature-squared term together, the potential diagram would mimic the landscape of a valley, serving as a cosmological attractor. The inflationary dynamics along this valley is studied, model parameters are constrained against observational data, and the isocurvature perturbation is evaluated.
We calculate the conditions required to produce a large local trispectrum during two-field slow-roll inflation. This is done by extending and simplifying the 'heatmap' approach developed by Byrnes et al. The conditions required to generate a large trispectrum are broadly the same as those that can produce a large bispectrum. We derive a simple relation between tauNL and fNL for models with separable potentials, and furthermore show that gNL and tauNL can be related in specific circumstances. Additionally, we interpret the heatmaps dynamically, showing how they can be used as qualitative tools …
In Aligned Natural Inflation, an alignment between different potential terms produces an inflaton excursion greater than the axion scales in the potential. We show that, starting from a general potential of two axions with two aligned potential terms, the effective theory for the resulting light direction is characterized by four parameters: an effective potential scale, an effective axion constant, and two extra parameters (related to ratios of the axion scales and the potential scales in the $2-$field theory). For all choices of these extra parameters, the model can support inflation along v…
We examine whether F-term supersymmetric hybrid inflation can be embedded within the minimal SO(10) model, in a natural way. We show that none of the singlets of the Standard Model symmetries in the minimal set of SO(10) representations can satisfy the conditions which are necessary for a scalar field to play the role of the inflaton. As a consequence, one has to introduce an extra scalar field, which however may spoil the naturalness of inflation within the context of SO(10). Nevertheless, if we add an extra scalar field, we are then able to construct a model that can accommodate flat directi…
Cosmological inflation is the dominating paradigm to account for observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). In this thesis, we study the phenomenology of a class of particularly well motivated models of inflation, known under the generic name of hybrid models. They are characterised by a transition from a valley to a hilltop shaped potential. In particular, we study three limiting regimes of the simplest realisation, hybrid inflation, constraining its parameter space using observational bounds on the spectral index and the non-gaussianity of the primordial perturbations. We find th…
Hybrid inflation faces two well-known problems: the blue spectrum of the non-supersymmetric version of the model and the fine-tuning of the initial conditions of the fields leading to sufficient inflation to account for the standard cosmological problems. They are investigated by studying the exact two-fields dynamics instead of assuming slow-roll. When the field values are restricted to be less than the reduced Planck mass, a non-negligible part of the initial condition space (around 15% depending on potential parameters) leads to successful inflation. Most of it is located outside the usual …
We present $α$-attractor models for inflation based on ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity with flat Kähler manifolds. The function form of the associated Kähler potential in these models are logarithmic square in nature and has a visible shift symmetry in its composite canonical variables. The scalar potential $V$ with respect to these field variables has an infinitely long dS valley of constant depth and width at large values of inflaton field $ψ$ and attains a Minkowski minimum at small $ψ$. We illustrate this new framework with a couple of examples.
