The first phase of the long-baseline neutrino experiment, LBNE10, will use a broadband, high-energy neutrino beam with a 10-kt liquid argon TPC at 1300 km to study neutrino oscillation. In this paper, we describe potential upgrades to LBNE10 that use Project X to produce high-intensity, low-energy neutrino beams. Simultaneous, high-power operation of 8- and 60-GeV beams with a 200-kt water Cerenkov detector would provide sensitivity to nu_mu to nu_e oscillations at the second oscillation maximum. We find that with ten years of data, it would be possible to measure sin2(2theta_13) with precision comparable to that expected from reactor antineutrino disappearance and to measure the value of the CP phase, delta_CP, with an uncertainty of (5-10) degrees. This document is submitted for inclusion in Snowmass 2013.
The bicycle model of Lorentz noninvariant neutrino oscillations without neutrino masses naturally predicts maximal mixing and a 1/E dependence of the oscillation argument for muon-neutrino to tau-neutrino oscillations of atmospheric and long-baseline neutrinos, but cannot also simultaneously fit the data for solar neutrinos and KamLAND. Within the Standard Model Extension, we examine all 19 possible structures of the effective Hamiltonian for Lorentz noninvariant oscillations of massless neutrinos that naturally have a 1/E dependence at high neutrino energy. Due to the lack of any evidence for…
The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) experiment is a next generation long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment utilising the Japan Proton Accelerator Research complex (J-PARC) high intensity proton synchrotron. After a brief introduction of the current understanding of neutrino mixing, the T2K experiment, its current status and the expected physics results are presented. Then, possibilities for future neutrino oscillation experiments utilising J-PARC are discussed.
NOvA is a two detector, long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment designed to study $ν_{e}$ ($\barν_{e}$) appearance and $ν_μ$ ($\barν_μ$) disappearance in a $ν_μ$ ($\barν_μ$) beam produced at Fermilab. The near detector (ND) is located 100 meters underground at a distance of 1 km from the target whereas the far detector (FD) is located on the surface, 810 km away from the beam source in Ash River, MN. The ND is used to measure the beam before oscillations and the FD measures the oscillated spectrum. The ND and the FD are functionally identical detectors and the ND spectra are extrapolated…
A new reactor-neutrino oscillation experiment, KASKA, is proposed to measure the unknown neutrino-mixing angle $θ_{13}$ using the world's most powerful Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station. It will measure a very small deficit of reactor-neutrino flux using three identical detectors, two placed just close to the sources and one at a distance of about 1.8km. Its conceptual design and physics reach are discussed.
We consider the physics potential of CERN based neutrino oscillation experiments consisting of a Beta Beam (BB) and a Super Beam (SPL) sending neutrinos to MEMPHYS, a 440 kt water Čerenkov detector at Frejus, at a distance of 130 km from CERN. The $θ_{13}$ discovery reach and the sensitivity to CP violation are investigated, including a detailed discussion of parameter degeneracies and systematical errors. For SPL sensitivities similar to the ones of the phase II of the T2K experiment (T2HK) are obtained, whereas the BB may reach significantly better sensitivities, depending on the achieved nu…
We perform a fit of solar neutrino data in the framework of the two four-neutrino schemes that are compatible with the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments. These schemes allow simultaneous transitions of solar nu_e's into active nu_mu's, nu_tau's and sterile nu_s. The data imply that the SMA solution is valid for any combination of nu_e->active and nu_e->sterile transitions, whereas the LMA, LOW and VO solutions disappear when nu_e->nu_s transitions are dominant.
This project aims to explore the effects that changes in a matter density profile could have on neutrino oscillations, and whether these could potentially be seen by the future Hyper-Kamiokande experiment (T2HK). The analysis is extended to include the possibility of having a second detector in Korea (T2HKK).
We consider the impact of neutral-current (NC) non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) on the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. We show that in presence of NSI there is an exact degeneracy which makes it impossible to determine the neutrino mass ordering and the octant of the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ at oscillation experiments. The degeneracy holds at the probability level and for arbitrary matter density profiles, and hence, solar, atmospheric, reactor, and accelerator neutrino experiments are affected simultaneously. The degeneracy requires order-one corrections from NSI to th…
This is an extension of the L-2L experiment for measurement of time reversal violation (TRV) proposed in a recent publication. The main new aspects are taking into account the curvature of the earth's surface for long baseline neutrino beams, and recognizing that the matter effects disappear when the baseline is extended. A slight modification of the MINOS project, with a new detector at 2L, is proposed.
Neutrino oscillation experiments require a precise measurement of the neutrino energy. However, the kinematic detection of the final-state neutron in the neutrino interaction is missing in current neutrino oscillation experiments. The missing neutron kinematic detection results in a feed-down of the detected neutrino energy compared to the true neutrino energy. A novel 3D\textcolor{black}{-}projection scintillator tracker, which consists of roughly ten million active cubes covered with an optical reflector, is capable of measuring the neutron kinetic energy and direction on an event-by-event b…
With the discovery of a modest size for the mixing angle $θ_{13} \sim 9^\circ$ by the Daya Bay collaboration at $>$5 sigma (\cite{dayabay}) the science of neutrino oscillations has shifted to explicit demonstration of CP violation and precision determination of the CP phase in the 3-flavor framework. Any additional contributions from new physics to the oscillation channel $ν_μ\to ν_e$ could be uncovered by multiple constraints in the ($θ_{13}, δ_{CP}$) parameter space. In long-baseline experiments such constraints will require examination of the oscillation strength at higher $L/E$ where the e…
The main physical goal of the project is to search with reactor antineutrinos for small mixing angle oscillations in the atmospheric mass parameter region around Δm^{2}_{atm} ~ 2.5 10^{-3} eV^2 in order to find the element U_{e3} of the neutrino mixing matrix or to set a new more stringent constraint (U_{e3} is the contribution of mass-3 state to the electron neutrino flavor state). To achieve this we propose a "one reactor - two detector" experiment: two identical antineutrino spectrometers with $\sim$50 ton liquid scintillator targets located at ~100 m and ~1000 m from the Krasnoyarsk underg…
Very intense neutrino beams and large neutrino detectors will be needed to enable the discovery of CP violation in the leptonic sector. The European Spallation Source (ESS), currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is a research center that will provide, by 2023, the world's most powerful neutron source. The average power will be 5 MW. Pulsing this linac at higher frequency, at the same instantaneous power, will make it possible to raise the average beam power to 10 MW to produce, in parallel with the spallation neutron production, a high performance neutrino Super Beam of about 0.4 GeV m…
New results from Super-Kamiokande, K2K and SNO not only have spurred on the interest in neutrino oscillation physics, but also have started to shift the interest from discovery to precision measurements. Future projects focusing on atmospheric neutrinos are reviewed in this context. Important contributions could be made in the precision determination of the oscillation parameters, in the observation of matter effects and in the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy. Unfortunately, the probability that the projects discussed in this review will be running in the next ten years is rather …
The project of a large underground experiment (NOE) devoted to long baseline neutrino oscillation measurement is presented. The apparatus is composed by calorimetric modules interleaved with TRD modules and has been optimized to be sensitive in the region of sin2 2theta and Dm2 suggested by the atmospheric neutrino oscillation signal.
We measure the B0 lifetime tau_B0 and the B-Bbar oscillation frequency Deltam_d with a sample of approximately 14,000 exclusively reconstructed B0 -> D*- l+ nu_l signal events, selected from 23 million B-Bbar pairs recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The b-quark flavor of the other B at the time of decay and its decay position are determined inclusively. The lifetime and oscillation frequency are measured simultaneously with an unbinned maximum-likelihood fit that uses, for each event, the measured difference in B decay times…
The main scientific goal of the ICANOE detector is the one of elucidating in a comprehensive way the pattern of neutrino masses and mixings, following the SuperKamiokande results and the observed solar neutrinos deficit. To achieve these goals, the experimental method is based upon the complementary and simultaneous detection of CERN beam (CNGS) and cosmic ray (CR) events. For the currently allowed values of the SuperKamiokande results, both CNGS and cosmic ray data will give independent measurements and provide a precise determination of the oscillation parameters.
During the past decade, long-baseline neutrino experiments played a fundamental role in confirming neutrino flavor change and in measuring the neutrino mixing matrix with high precision. This role will be amplified with the next generation of experiments, which will begin probing the possibility of CP violation in the leptonic sector and possibly pin down the neutrino mass hierarchy. An account of the most recent results from the MINOS experiment is presented, along with the earlier measurement from the K2K experiment. The next generation projects, T2K and NOvA, are described and their current…
The $B^0$-$\bar B^0$ oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million $\B\bar B$ pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives $Δm_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)}$ ps$^{-1}$.
We present a simultaneous measurement of the B0bar lifetime tau_B0 and B0B0bar oscillation frequency Delta_md. We use a sample of about 50000 partially reconstructed B0bar --> D*+ ell- nu-bar decays identified with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring at SLAC. The flavor of the other B meson in the event is determined from the charge of another high-momentum lepton. The results are tau_B0 = (1.504 +/- 0.013 (stat) {+0.018}/{-0.013} (syst)) ps, Delta_md = (0.511 +/- 0.007 (stat) {+0.007}/{-0.006} (syst)) ps-1
Neutrino oscillations have been probed during the last few decades using multiple neutrino sources and experimental set-ups. In the recent years, very large volume neutrino telescopes have started contributing to the field. First ANTARES and then IceCube have relied on large and sparsely instrumented volumes to observe atmospheric neutrinos for combinations of baselines and energies inaccessible to other experiments. Using this advantage, the latest result from IceCube starts approaching the precision of other established technologies, and is paving the way for future detectors, such as ORCA a…
The JHF-Kamioka neutrino project is a second generation long base line neutrino oscillation experiment that probes physics beyond the Standard Model by high precision measurements of the neutrino masses and mixing. A high intensity narrow band neutrino beam is produced by secondary pions created by a high intensity proton synchrotron at JHF (JAERI). The neutrino energy is tuned to the oscillation maximum at ~1 GeV for a baseline length of 295 km towards the world largest water Cerenkov detector, Super-Kamiokande. Its excellent energy resolution and particle identification enable the reconstruc…
We measure the B0 lifetime τ_{B0} and the B0-B0bar oscillation frequency Δm_d with a sample of approximately 14,000 exclusively reconstructed B0 --> D*- l+ nu signal events, selected from 23 million BBbar pairs recorded at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The decay position of the other B is determined with the remaining tracks in the event, and its b-quark flavor at the time of decay is determined with a tagging algorithm that exploits the correlation between the flavor of the b-quark and the charges of its decay products. The lifetime and…
The Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program is a short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in the Booster Neutrino Beam-line (BNB) at Fermilab. It consists of three Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) from the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND), Micro Booster Neutrino Experiment (MicroBooNE), and Imaging Cosmic And Rare Underground Signals (ICARUS) experiments. The SBN Program will definitively search for short-baseline neutrino oscillations in the 1 eV mass range, make precision neutrino-argon interaction measurements, and further develop the LArTPC technology. The physics pro…
