Considering a Hamiltonian Dynamical System describing the motion of charged particle in a Tokamak or a Stellarator, we build a change of coordinates to reduce its dimension. This change of coordinates is in fact an intricate succession of mappings that are built using Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Differential Geometry, Hamiltonian Dynamical System Theory and Symplectic Geometry, Lie Transforms and a new tool which is here introduced : Partial Lie Sums.
Gyrokinetic turbulence is subject to the constraint that the turbulent charge flux vanishes. This is interpreted, in detail, as arising from momentum conservation at the fluctuation scale. There are beautiful and deep analogies with the classical transport from Coulomb collisions.
We propose a solution to the long-standing short wavelength polarization closure shortfall of full-F gyro-fluid models. This is achieved by first finding an appropriate quadratic form of the gyro-fluid moment over the polarization part of the gyro-center Hamiltonian. Secondly, we deduce Padé-based approximations to the latter expression that produce a polarization charge density with the desired order of accuracy and retain linear polarization effects for arbitrary wavelengths. The proposed closures feature proper energy conservation and the anticipated Oberbeck-Boussinesq and long wavelength …
In the present work, a consistent Lagrangian model that encapsulates fully kinetic ions and gyrokinetic electrons for solar wind electromagnetic turbulence is formulated. Using a consistent method, where both electrons and protons are treated with the same mathematical formalism, we derive and implement a model in which high frequency waves and kinetic electrons effects are described in a computationally cost-efficient way. To that aim, higher order Lie-transform perturbation methods applied to Hamiltonian formulation of guiding center motion are used in order to describe the dynamics of parti…
The non perturbative guiding center transformation is extended to the relativistic regime and takes into account electromagnetic fluctuations. The main solutions are obtained in covariant form: the gyrating particle and the guiding particle solutions, both in gyro-kinetic as in MHD orderings. Moreover, the presence of a gravitational field is also considered. The way to introduce the gravitational field is original and based on the Einstein conjecture on the feasibility to extend the general relativity theory to include electromagnetism by geometry, if applied to the extended phase space. In g…
We present a new method for formulating closures that learn from kinetic simulation data. We apply this method to phase mixing in a simple gyrokinetic turbulent system - temperature gradient driven turbulence in an unsheared slab. The closure, called the learned multi-mode (LMM) closure, is constructed by, first, extracting an optimal basis from a nonlinear kinetic simulation using singular value decomposition (SVD). Subsequent nonlinear fluid simulations are projected onto this basis and the results are used to formulate the closure. We compare the closure with other closures schemes over a b…
A Hamiltonian six-field gyrofluid model is constructed, based on closure relations derived from the so-called "quasi-static" gyrokinetic linear theory where the fields are assumed to propagate with a parallel phase velocity much smaller than the parallel particle thermal velocities. The main properties of this model, primarily aimed at exploring basic phenomena of interest for space plasmas such as the solar wind, are its ability to provide a reasonable agreement with kinetic theory for linear low-frequency modes, and at the same time to ensure a Hamiltonian structure in the absence of explici…
The fundament of the classical guiding center theory is gyro-phase averaging, which cannot be well defined over a non-trivial magnetic field topology. The local gyro-phase coordinate frame hides the geometric nature of gyro-symmetry. A coordinate-free geometric representation should be a more appropriate alternative for a deeper understanding of the guiding center dynamics. In this paper, the motion of a charged particle is described by a Lagrangian one-form on a seven-dimensional phase space. The Lagrangian one-form is geometrically decomposed by constructing a coordinate-free gyro-averaging …
This paper presents the current state of the global gyrokinetic code ORB5 as an update of the previous reference [Jolliet et al., Comp. Phys. Commun. 177 409 (2007)]. The ORB5 code solves the electromagnetic Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations using a PIC scheme and also includes collisions and strong flows. The code assumes multiple gyrokinetic ion species at all wavelengths for the polarization density and drift-kinetic electrons. Variants of the physical model can be selected for electrons such as assuming an adiabatic response or a ``hybrid'' model in which passing electrons are assumed adi…
In this paper we present energy-conserving, mixed discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and continuous Galerkin (CG) schemes for the solution of a broad class of physical systems described by Hamiltonian evolution equations. These systems often arise in fluid mechanics (incompressible Euler equations) and plasma physics (Vlasov--Poisson equations and gyrokinetic equations), for example. The dynamics is described by a distribution function that evolves given a Hamiltonian and a corresponding Poisson bracket operator, with the Hamiltonian itself computed from field equations. Hamiltonian systems have seve…
