Recently, Lee et al. used Gaussian mixture models (GMM) to study the radio pulsar population. In the distribution of normal pulsars in the P-dotP plane, they found four clusters. We develop this approach further and apply it to different synthetic pulsar populations in order to determine whether the method can effectively select groups of sources that are physically different. We check several combinations of initial conditions as well as the models of pulsar evolution and the selection effects. We find that in the case of rapidly evolving objects, the GMM is oversensitive to parameter variations and does not produce stable results. We conclude that the method does not help much to identify the sub-populations with different initial parameters or/and evolutionary paths. For the same reason, the GMM does not discriminate effectively between theoretical population synthesis models of normal radio pulsars.
On the basis of the PSRPOPPY software package, we developed an evolution model of population synthesis for isolated radio pulsars by incorporating the fan beam model, an alternative radio emission beam model to the widely used conal beam model. With proper choice of related models and parameters, we succesfully reproduced the observational distributions of Galactic longitude ($l$) and latitude ($b$), spin period, period derivative, dispersion measure and 1.4-GHz flux density for the 1214 isolated pulsars discovered by the Parkes multibeam and Swinburne pulsar surveys. The number of underlying …

The discovery of extended gamma-ray emission toward a number of middle-aged pulsars suggests the possibility of long-lived particle confinement beyond the classical pulsar wind nebula (PWN) stage. How this emerging source class can be extrapolated to a Galactic population remains unclear. We aim to evaluate how pulsar halos fit in existing TeV observations, under the assumption that all middle-aged pulsars develop halos similar to those observed toward the J0633+1746 or B0656+14 pulsars. We modeled the populations of supernova remnants, PWNe, and pulsar halos in the Milky Way. The PWN-halo evo…
Young isolated neutron stars (INS) most commonly manifest themselves as rotationally powered pulsars (RPPs) which involve conventional radio pulsars as well as gamma-ray pulsars (GRPs) and rotating radio transients (RRATs). Some other young INS families manifest themselves as anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) which are commonly accepted as magnetars, i.e. magnetically powered neutron stars with decaying superstrong fields. Yet some other young INS are identified as central compact objects (CCOs) and X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs) which are cooling ob…
We present a model of evolution of solitary neutron stars, including spin parameters, magnetic field decay, motion in the Galactic potential and birth inside spiral arms. We use two parametrizations of the radio-luminosity law and model the radio selection effects. Dispersion measure is estimated from the recent model of free electron distribution in the Galaxy (YMW16). Model parameters are optimized using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique. The preferred model has a short decay scale of the magnetic field of 4.27 +0.4 -0.38 Myr. However, it has non-negligible correlation with parameters d…

We carry out a classification of the observed pulsar dataset into distinct clusters, based on the $P-\dot{P}$ diagram, using Extreme Deconvolution based Gaussian Mixture Model. We then use the Bayesian Information Criterion to select the optimum number of clusters. We find in accord with previous works, that the pulsar dataset can be optimally classified into six clusters, with two for the millisecond pulsar population, and four for the ordinary pulsar population. Beyond that, however we do not glean any additional insight into the pulsar population based on this classification. Using numerica…
We model the present day, observable, normal radio pulsar population of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The pulsars are generated with SeBa, a binary population synthesis code that evolves binaries and the constituent stellar objects up to remnant formation and beyond. We define radio pulsars by selecting neutron stars that satisfy a selection of criteria defined by Galactic pulsars, and apply the detection thresholds of previous and future SMC pulsar surveys. The number of synthesised and recovered pulsars are exceptionally sensitive to the assumed star formation history and applied radio lu…
We present the largest single survey to date of average profiles of radio pulsars, observed and processed using the same telescope and data reduction software. Specifically, we present measurements for 1170 pulsars, observed by the Thousand Pulsar Array (TPA) programme at the 64-dish SARAO MeerKAT radio telescope, in a frequency band from 856 to 1712 MHz. We provide rotation measures (RM), dispersion measures, flux densities and polarization properties. The catalogue includes 254 new RMs that substantially increase the total number of known pulsar RMs. Our integration times typically span over…
Current wisdom accounts to the diversity of neutron star observational manifestations to their birth scenarios, influencing their thermal and magnetic field evolution. Among the kind of observed neutron stars, radio pulsars represent by far the largest population of neutron stars. In this paper, we aim at constraining the observed population of the canonical neutron star period, magnetic field and spatial distribution at birth in order to understand the radio and high-energy emission processes in a pulsar magnetosphere. For this purpose we design a population synthesis method self-consistently…
A search for radio pulsars and fast transients in M31 using the WSRT
Using neural networks, we integrate the ability to account for Doppler smearing due to a pulsar's orbital motion with the pulsar population synthesis package \psrpoppy\ to develop accurate modeling of the observed binary pulsar population. As a first application, we show that binary neutron star systems where the two components have highly unequal mass are, on average, easier to detect than systems which are symmetric in mass. We then investigate the population of ultra-compact ($1.5 \, {\rm min} \leq P_{\rm b} \leq 15\,\rm min$) neutron star--white dwarf (NS--WD) and double neutron star (DNS)…

This paper uses population synthesis to investigate the possible origin of isolated millisecond pulsars (IMSPs) as born from the coalescence of a neutron star (NS) and a white dwarf (WD). Results show that the galactic birth - rate of IMSPs is likely to lie between $5.8\times10^{-5}$ $\rm yr^{-1}$ and $2.0\times10^{-4}$ $\rm yr^{-1}$, depending on critical variables, such as the stability of mass transfer via the Roche lobe and the value of kick velocity. In addition to this, this paper estimates that the solar mass of IMSPs can range from $1.5$ and 2.0 $M_{\odot}$, making them more massive th…
We present X-ray and radio observations of the recently-discovered bow shock pulsar wind nebula associated with PSR J0002+6216, characterizing the PWN morphology, which was unresolved in previous studies. The multi-frequency, multi-epoch Very Large Array radio observations reveal a cometary tail trailing the pulsar and extending up to 5.3', with multiple kinks along the emission. The presented radio continuum images from multi-configuration broadband VLA observations are one of the first results from the application of multi-term multi-frequency synthesis deconvolution in combination with the …
While pulsars possess exceptional rotational stability, large scale timing studies have revealed at least two distinct types of irregularities in their rotation: red timing noise and glitches. Using modern Bayesian techniques, we investigated the timing noise properties of 300 bright southern-sky radio pulsars that have been observed over 1.0-4.8 years by the upgraded Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST). We reanalysed the spin and spin-down changes associated with nine previously reported pulsar glitches, report the discovery of three new glitches and four unusual glitch-like event…
The population of young, non-recycled pulsars with spin down energies Edot >10^35 erg/s is sampled predominantly at gamma-ray and radio wavelengths. A total of 137 such pulsars are known, with partial overlap between the sources detectable in radio and gamma-rays. We use a very small set of assumptions in an attempt to test whether the observed pulsar sample can be explained by a single underlying population of neutron stars. For radio emission we assume a canonical conal beam with a fixed emission height of 300~km across all spin periods and a luminosity law which depends on Edot^{0.25}. For …
Aims. We estimate the number of pulsars, detectable as continuous gravitational wave sources with the current and future gravitational-wave detectors, assuming a simple phenomenological model of evolving non-axisymmetry of the rotating neutron star. Methods. We employ a numerical model of the Galactic neutron star population, with the properties established by comparison with radio observations of isolated Galactic pulsars. We generate an arbitrarily large synthetic population of neutron stars and evolve their period, magnetic field, and position in space. We use a gravitational wave emission …
We explore the possibility of inferring the properties of the Galactic neutron star population through machine learning. In particular, in this paper we focus on their dynamical characteristics and show that an artificial neural network is able to estimate with high accuracy the parameters which control the current positions of a mock population of pulsars. For this purpose, we implement a simplified population-synthesis framework (where selection biases are neglected at this stage) and concentrate on the natal kick-velocity distribution and the distribution of birth distances from the Galacti…
We present pulse width measurements for a sample of radio pulsars observed with the MeerKAT telescope as part of the Thousand-Pulsar-Array (TPA) programme in the MeerTime project. For a centre frequency of 1284 MHz, we obtain 762 $W_{10}$ measurements across the total bandwidth of 775 MHz, where $W_{10}$ is the width at the 10% level of the pulse peak. We also measure about 400 $W_{10}$ values in each of the four or eight frequency sub-bands. Assuming, the width is a function of the rotation period P, this relationship can be described with a power law with power law index $μ=-0.29\pm 0.03$. H…
We present an overview and the first results from a large-scale pulsar timing programme that is part of the UTMOST project at the refurbished Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Radio Telescope (MOST) near Canberra, Australia. We currently observe more than 400 mainly bright southern radio pulsars with up to daily cadences. For 205 (8 in binaries, 4 millisecond pulsars) we publish updated timing models, together with their flux densities, flux density variability, and pulse widths at 843 MHz, derived from observations spanning between 1.4 and 3 yr. In comparison with the ATNF pulsar catalogue, we i…
Supernova explosion and the associated neutron star natal kicks are important events on a pathway of a binary to become a gravitational wave source, an X-ray binary or a millisecond radio pulsar. Weak natal kicks often lead to binary survival, while strong kicks frequently disrupt the binary. In this article, we aim to further constrain neutron star natal kicks in binaries. We explore binary population synthesis models by varying prescription for natal kick, remnant mass and mass accretion efficiency. We introduce a robust statistical technique to analyse combined observations of different nat…
Binary interactions lead to the formation of intriguing objects, such as compact binaries, supernovae, gamma ray bursts, X-ray binaries, pulsars, novae, cataclysmic variables, hot subdwarf stars, barium stars, and blue stragglers. To study the evolution of binary populations and the consequent formation of these objects, many methods have been developed over the years, of which a robust approach named binary population synthesis (BPS) warrants special attention. This approach has seen widespread use in many areas of astrophysics, including but not limited to analyses of the stellar content of …
