A linear ion trap setup has been developed for studying the dynamics of trapped ion cloud and thereby realizing possible systematics of a high precision measurement on a single ion within it. The dynamics of molecular nitrogen ion cloud has been investigated to extract the characteristics of the trap setup. The stability of trap operation has been studied with observation of narrow nonlinear resonances pointing out the region of instabilities within the broad stability region. The secular frequency has been measured and the motional spectra of trapped ion oscillation have been obtained by using electric dipole excitation. It is applied to study the space charge effect and the axial coupling in the radial plane.
Samples of ultracold 174 Yb+ ions, confined in a linear radio-frequency Paul trap, are heated via self-induced micromotion interruption, while their temperature, density, and therefore structural phase are monitored and simulated. The observed time evolution of the ion temperature is compared to a theoretical model for ion-ion heating allowing a direct measurement of the Coulomb logarithm in a linear Paul trap. This result permits a simple, yet accurate, analytical description of ion cloud thermodynamic properties, e.g. density, temperature, and structural phase, as well as suggests limits to …
The standard second-order pseudo-oscillator potential used in many analytical investigations of the properties of ions stored in a Paul trap has serious limitations. In this paper we show that ion-crystal configurations exhibited by 2, 3, and 4 simultaneously stored ions in a Paul trap are not predicted by the standard pseudo-oscillator potential, but are all captured qualitatively and quantitatively by an extended pseudopotential derived in this paper. The power of our extended pseudopotential extends in particular to the prediction of the border lines between different crystal configurations…
The presence of charged particles in an ion trap modifies the harmonic trapping potential in which they are trapped, leading to observed shifts in secular frequency as well as appearance of collective oscillation. In a linear trap geometry, both of these effects have been observed under different trapping conditions using narrow non-linear resonance and external excitation. The observations have been modeled with minimal fitting parameter showing good agreement with results obtained. The space charge in our experiment plays an important role in terms of criticality of the onset of collective o…
We report on the design of a segmented linear Paul trap for optical clock applications using trapped ion Coulomb crystals. For an optical clock with an improved short-term stability and a fractional frequency uncertainty of 10^-18, we propose 115In+ ions sympathetically cooled by 172Yb+. We discuss the systematic frequency shifts of such a frequency standard. In particular, we elaborate on high precision calculations of the electric radiofrequency field of the ion trap using the finite element method. These calculations are used to find a scalable design with minimized excess micromotion of th…
Simulations of the dynamics of ions trapped in a Paul trap with terms in the potential up to the order 10 have been carried out. The power series method is used to solve numerically the equations of motion of the ions. The stability diagram has been studied and the buffer gas cooling has been implemented by a Monte Carlo method. The dipole excitation was also included. The method has been applied to an existing trap and it has shown good agreement with the experimental results and previous simulations using other methods.
Linear Paul r.f. ion traps (LPT) are used in many experimental studies such as mass spectrometry, atom-ion collisions and ion-molecule reactions. Mass selective resonant quenching (MSRQ) is implemented in LPT either to identify a charged particle's mass or to remove unwanted ions from a controlled experimental environment. In the latter case, MSRQ can introduce undesired heating to co-trapped ions of different mass, whose secular motion is off resonance with the quenching ac field, which we call off-resonance energy absorption (OREA). We present simulations and experimental evidence that show …
We present experimental measurements of the steady-state ion number in a linear Paul trap (LPT) as a function of the ion-loading rate. These measurements, taken with (a) constant Paul trap stability parameter $q$, (b) constant radio-frequency (rf) amplitude, or (c) constant rf frequency, show nonlinear behavior. At the loading rates achieved in this experiment, a plot of the steady-state ion number as a function of loading rate has two regions: a monotonic rise (region I) followed by a plateau (region II). Also described are simulations and analytical theory which match the experimental result…
We report on observations of thermal motion of a single, Doppler-cooled ion along the axis of a linear radio-frequency quadrupole trap. We show that for a harmonic potential the thermal occupation of energy levels leads to Gaussian distribution of the ion's axial position. The dependence of the spatial thermal spread on the trap potential is used for precise calibration of our imaging system's point spread function and sub-milliKelvin thermometry. We employ this technique to investigate the laser detuning dependence of the Doppler temperature.
A single ion immersed in a neutral buffer gas is studied. An analytical model is developed that gives a complete description of the dynamics and steady-state properties of the ions. An extension of this model, using techniques borrowed from the mathematics of finance, is used to explain the recent observation of non-Maxwellian statistics for these systems. Taken together, these results offer an explanation of the longstanding issues associated with sympathetic cooling of an ion by a neutral buffer gas.
We demonstrate minimization of ion micromotion in a linear Paul trap with the use of a high finesse cavity. The excess ion micromotion projected along the optical cavity axis or along the laser propagation direction manifests itself as sideband peaks around the carrier in the ion-cavity emission spectrum. By minimizing the sideband height in the emission spectrum, we are able to reduce the micromotion amplitude to approximately the spread of the ground state wave function. This method is useful for cavity QED experiments as it allows for efficient 3-D micromotion compensation despite optical a…
Sympathetic laser cooling of ions stored within a linear-geometry, radio frequency, electric-quadrupole trap has been investigated using computational and theoretical techniques. The simulation, which allows 5 sample ions to interact with 35 laser-cooled atomic ions, revealed an instability heating mechanism, which can prevent ions below a certain critical mass from being sympathetically cooled. This critical mass can however be varied by changing the trapping field parameters thus allowing ions with a very large range of masses to be sympathetically cooled using a single ion species. A theore…
We present a method to measure the decay rate of the first excited vibrational state of simple polar molecular ions being part of a Coulomb crystal in a cryogenic linear Paul trap. Specifically, we have monitored the decay of the $|ν$=$1,J$=$1 \rangle_X$ towards the $|ν$=$0,J$=$0 \rangle_X$ level in MgH$^+$ by saturated laser excitation of the $|ν$=$0,J$=$2 \rangle_X$-$|ν$=$1,J$=$1 \rangle_X$ transition followed by state selective resonance enhanced two-photon dissociation out of the $|ν$=$0,J$=$2 \rangle_X$ level. The technique enables the determination of decay rates, and thus absorption str…
We study a method for mass-selective removal of ions from a Paul trap by parametric excitation. This can be achieved by applying an oscillating electric quadrupole field at twice the secular frequency $ω_{\text{sec}}$ using pairs of opposing electrodes. While excitation near the resonance with the frequency $ω_{\text{sec}}$ only leads to a linear increase of the amplitude with excitation duration, parametric excitation near $2\, ω_{\text{sec}}$ results in an exponential increase of the amplitude. This enables efficient removal of ions from the trap with modest excitation voltages and narrow ba…
We demonstrate trapping of electrons in a millimeter-sized quadrupole Paul trap driven at 1.6~GHz in a room-temperature ultra-high vacuum setup. Cold electrons are introduced into the trap by ionization of atomic calcium via Rydberg states and stay confined by microwave and static electric fields for several tens of milliseconds. A fraction of these electrons remain trapped longer and show no measurable loss for measurement times up to a second. Electronic excitation of the motion reveals secular frequencies which can be tuned over a range of several tens to hundreds of MHz. Operating a simila…
We study the stochastic dynamics of a particle in a periodically driven potential. For atomic ions trapped in radio-frequency Paul traps, noise heating and laser cooling typically act slowly in comparison with the unperturbed motion. These stochastic processes can be accounted for in terms of a probability distribution defined over the action variables, which would otherwise be conserved within the regular regions of the Hamiltonian phase space. We present a semiclassical theory of low-saturation laser cooling applicable from the limit of low-amplitude motion to large-amplitude motion, account…
In this paper, direct observation of micromotion for multiple ions in a laser-cooled trapped ion crystal is discussed along with a novel measurement technique for micromotion amplitude. Micromotion is directly observed using a time-resolving, single-photon sensitive camera that provides both fluorescence and position data for each ion on the nanosecond time scale. Micromotion amplitude and phase for each ion in the crystal are measured, allowing this method to be sensitive to tilts and shifts of the ion chain from the null of the radiofrequency quadrupole potential in the linear trap. Spatial …
We present a model as well as experimental results for a surface electrode radio-frequency Paul trap that has a circular electrode geometry well-suited for trapping of single ions and two-dimensional planar ion crystals. The trap design is compatible with microfabrication and offers a simple method by which the height of the trapped ions above the surface may be changed \emph{in situ}. We demonstrate trapping of single and few Sr+ ions over an ion height range of 200-1000 microns for several hours under Doppler laser cooling, and use these to characterize the trap, finding good agreement with …
Radio-frequency (rf) Paul traps operated with multifrequency rf trapping potentials provide the ability to independently confine charged particle species with widely different charge-to-mass ratios. In particular, these traps may find use in the field of antihydrogen recombination, allowing antiproton and positron clouds to be trapped and confined in the same volume without the use of large superconducting magnets. We explore the stability regions of two-frequency Paul traps and perform numerical simulations of small, multispecies charged-particle mixtures that indicate the promise of these tr…
The $^{27}$Al$^+$ ion optical clock is one of the most attractive optical clocks due to its own advantages, such as low blackbody radiation shift at room temperature and insensitive to the magnetic drift. However, it cannot be laser-cooled directly in the absence of 167 nm laser to date. This problem can be solved by sympathetic cooling. In this work, a linear Paul trap is used to trap both $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ and $^{27}$Al$^+$ ions simultaneously, and a single Doppler-cooled $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion is employed to sympathetically cool a single $^{27}$Al$^+$ ion. Thus a "bright-dark" two-ion crystal has …
We study the quantum stability of the dynamics of ions in a Paul trap. We revisit the results of Wang et al. [Phys. Rev. A 52, 1419 (1995)], which showed that quantum trajectories did not have the same region of stability as their classical counterpart, contrary to what is obtained from a Floquet analysis of the motion in the periodic trapping field. Using numerical simulations of the full wave-packet dynamics, we confirm that the classical trapping criterion are fully applicable to quantum motion, when considering both the expectation value of the position of the wave packet and its width.

We report sympathetic cooling of $^{113}$Cd$^+$ by laser-cooled $^{40}$Ca$^+$ in a linear Paul trap for microwave clocks. Long-term low-temperature confinement of $^{113}$Cd$^+$ ions was achieved. The temperature of these ions was measured at $90(10)$ mK, and the corresponding uncertainty arising from the second-order Doppler shifts was estimated to a level of $2\times10^{-17}$. Up to $4.2\times10^5$ Cd$^+$ ions were confined in the trap, and the confinement time constant was measured to be 84 hours. After three hours of confinement, there were still $10^5$ Cd$^+$ ions present, indicating that…
The accurate evaluation of the second-order Doppler frequency shift (SODFS) of trapped ions in a linear Paul trap has been studied with experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The motion of trapped ions in the trap has three contributions, and we focus on the ion excess micromotion, which is rarely discussed when evaluating the SODFS. Based on the hypothesis that the ion density is uniformly distributed in the radial direction, we propose a new model to accurately evaluate the total SODFS for ion microwave clocks. The effectiveness of the model has been verified both in simulation…
We study the probability distribution of an atomic ion being laser-cooled in a periodically-driven Paul trap using a Floquet approach to the semiclassical photon scattering dynamics. We show that despite the microscopic nonequilibrium forces, a stationary thermal-like exponential distribution can be obtained in the Hamiltonian action, or equivalently in the number of quanta (phonons) of the motion linearized about the zero of the potential. At the presence of additional stray electric fields, the ion is pushed from the origin of the potential and set into a large-amplitude driven oscillation, …
We present and derive analytic expressions for a fundamental limit to the sympathetic cooling of ions in radio-frequency traps using cold atoms. The limit arises from the work done by the trap electric field during a long-range ion-atom collision and applies even to cooling by a zero-temperature atomic gas in a perfectly compensated trap. We conclude that in current experimental implementations this collisional heating prevents access to the regimes of single-partial-wave atom-ion interaction or quantized ion motion. We determine conditions on the atom-ion mass ratio and on the trap parameters…
Long range polarization forces between ions and neutral atoms result in large elastic scattering cross sections, e.g., 10^6 a.u. for Na+ on Na or Ca+ on Na at cold and ultracold temperatures. This suggests that a hybrid ion-neutral trap should offer a general means for significant sympathetic cooling of atomic or molecular ions. We present SIMION 7.0 simulation results concerning the advantages and limitations of sympathetic cooling within a hybrid trap apparatus, consisting of a linear rf Paul trap concentric with a Na magneto-optical trap (MOT). This paper explores the impact of various heat…
We present models for a heteronuclear diatomic molecular ion in a linear Paul trap in a rigid-rotor approximation, one purely classical, the other where the center-of-mass motion is treated classically while rotational motion is quantized. We study the rotational dynamics and their influence on the motion of the center-of-mass, in the presence of the coupling between the permanent dipole moment of the ion and the trapping electric field. We show that the presence of the permanent dipole moment affects the trajectory of the ion, and that it departs from the Mathieu equation solution found for a…
We investigate the evolution of quasi-static stray electric fields in a linear Paul trap over a period of several months. Depending on how these electric fields are initially induced we observe very different time scales for the field drifts. Photo-induced electric fields decay on time scales of days. We interpret this as photo-electrically generated charges on insulating materials which decay via discharge currents. In contrast, stray fields due to the exposure of the ion trap to a beam of Ba atoms mainly exhibit slow dynamics on the order of months. We explain this observation as a consequen…
Using numerical simulations of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we study the full quantum dynamics of the motion of an atomic ion in a linear Paul trap. Such a trap is based on a time-varying, periodic electric field, and hence corresponds to a time-dependent potential for the ion, which we model exactly. We compare the center of mass motion with that obtained from classical equations of motion, as well as to results based on a time-independent effective potential. We also study the oscillations of the width of the ion's wave packet, including close to the border between stable (bounde…
We report on the compensation of excess micromotion due to parasitic rf-electric fields in a Paul trap. The parasitic rf-electric fields stem from the Paul trap drive but cause excess micromotion, e.g. due to imperfections in the setup of the Paul trap. We compensate these fields by applying rf-voltages of the same frequency but adequate phases and amplitudes to Paul trap electrodes. The magnitude of micromotion is probed by studying elastic collision rates of the trapped ion with a gas of ultracold neutral atoms. Furthermore, we demonstrate that also reactive collisions can be used to quantif…
We investigate the problem of a single ion in a radio-frequency trap and immersed in an ultracold Bose gas either in a condensed or a non-condensed phase. We develop master equation formalism describing the sympathetic cooling and we determine the cooling rates of ions. We show that cold atomic reservoir modifies the stability diagram of the ion in the Paul trap creating the regions where the ion is either cooled or heated due to the energy quanta exchanged with the time-dependent potential.
We present a comprehensive phase-space treatment of the motion of charged particles in electrodynamic traps. Focusing on five-wire surface-electrode Paul traps, we study the details of integrable and chaotic motion of a single ion. We introduce appropriate phase-space measures and give a universal characterization of the trap effectiveness as a function of the parameters. We rigorously derive the commonly used (time-independent) pseudopotential approximation, quantify its regime of validity and analyze the mechanism of its breakdown within the time-dependent potential. The phase space approach…
We experimentally demonstrate fast separation of a two-ion crystal in a microstructured segmented Paul trap. By the use of spectroscopic calibration routines for the electrostatic trap potentials, we achieve the required precise control of the ion trajectories near the \textit{critical point}, where the harmonic confinement by the external potential vanishes. The separation procedure can be controlled by three parameters: A static potential tilt, a voltage offset at the critical point, and the total duration of the process. We show how to optimize the control parameters by measurements of ion …
We develop the theory to describe the equilibrium ion positions and phonon modes for a trapped ion quantum simulator in an oblate Paul trap that creates two-dimensional Coulomb crystals in a triangular lattice. By coupling the internal states of the ions to laser beams propagating along the symmetry axis, we study the effective Ising spin-spin interactions that are mediated via the axial phonons and are less sensitive to ion micromotion. We find that the axial mode frequencies permit the programming of Ising interactions with inverse power law spin-spin couplings that can be tuned from uniform…

We experimentally study two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb crystals in the "radial-2D" phase of a linear Paul trap. This phase is identified by a 2D ion lattice aligned entirely with the radial plane and is created by imposing a large ratio of axial to radial trapping potentials. Using arrays of up to 19 $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ions, we demonstrate that the structural phase boundaries and vibrational mode frequencies of such crystals are well-described by the pseudopotential approximation, despite the time-dependent ion positions driven by intrinsic micromotion. We further observe that micromotion-induced he…

The LPCTrap experiment uses an open Paul trap which was built to enable precision measurements in the beta decay of radioactive ions. The initial goal was the precise measurement of the beta-neutrino angular correlation coefficient in the decay of 6He. Its geometry results from a careful optimization of the harmonic potential created by cylindrical electrodes. It supersedes previously considered geometries that presented a smaller detection solid angle to the beta particle and the recoiling ion. We describe here the methods which were used for the potential optimization, and we present the mea…
We theoretically investigate the process of splitting two-ion crystals in segmented Paul traps, i.e. the structural transition from two ions confined in a common well to ions confined in separate wells. The precise control of this process by application of suitable voltage ramps to the trap segments is non-trivial, as the harmonic confinement transiently vanishes during the process. This makes the ions strongly susceptible to background electric field noise, and to static offset fields in the direction of the trap axis. We analyze the reasons why large energy transfers can occur, which are imp…

Quantum tunnelling is a common fundamental quantum-mechanical phenomenon that originates from the wave-like characteristics of quantum particles. Although the quantum-tunnelling effect was first observed 85 years ago, some questions regarding the dynamics of quantum tunnelling remain unresolved. Here, we realise a quantum-tunnelling system using two-dimensional ionic structures in a linear Paul trap. We demonstrate that the charged particles in this quantum-tunnelling system are coupled to the vector potential of a magnetic field throughout the entire process, even during quantum tunnelling, a…
Usually the influence of the quadratic Stark effect on an ion's trapping potential is minuscule and only needs to be considered in atomic clock experiments. In this work we excite a trapped ion to a Rydberg state with polarizability $\sim$~eight orders of magnitude higher than a low-lying electronic state; we find that the highly-polarizable ion experiences a vastly different trapping potential owing to the Stark effect. We observe changes in trap stiffness, equilibrium position and minimum potential, which can be tuned using the trapping electric fields. These effects lie at the heart of prop…
We present the design and construction of a new experimental apparatus for the trapping of single Ba$^+$ ions in the center of curvature of an optical-quality hemispherical mirror. We describe the layout, fabrication and integration of the full setup, consisting of a high-optical access monolithic `3D-printed' Paul trap, the hemispherical mirror, a diffraction-limited in-vacuum lens (NA = 0.7) for collection of atomic fluorescence and a state-of-the art ultra-high vacuum vessel. This new apparatus enables the study of quantum electrodynamics effects such as strong inhibition and enhancement of…
The Coulomb repulsion between ions in a linear Paul trap give rise to anharmonic terms in the potential energy when expanded about the equilibrium positions. We examine the effect of these anharmonic terms on the accuracy of a quantum simulator made from trapped ions. To be concrete, we consider a linear chain of $\text{Yb}^{171+}$ ions stabilized close to the zigzag transition. We find that for typical experimental temperatures, frequencies change by no more than a factor of $0.01\%$ due to the anharmonic couplings. Furthermore, shifts in the effective spin-spin interactions (driven by a spin…
The motion of an ion in a radiofrequency (rf) Paul trap is described by the Mathieu equation and the associated stability parameters that are proportional to the rf and dc electric field gradients. Here, a higher-order, iterative method to accurately solve the stability parameters from measured secular frequencies is presented. It is then used to characterize an endcap trap by showing that the trap's radial asymmetry is dominated by the dc field gradients and by measuring the relation between the applied voltages and the gradients. The results are shown to be in good agreement with an electros…
We present a simple Paul trap that stably accommodates up to a couple of dozens of \ensuremath{^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^+~} ions in a stationary two-dimensional lattice. The trap is constructed on a single plate of gold-plated laser-machined alumina and can produce a pancake-like pseudo-potential that makes ions form a self-assembly two-dimensional crystal which locates on the plane composed of axial and one of the transverse axes with around 5 $μ$m spacing. We use Raman laser beams to coherently manipulate these ion-qubits where the net propagation direction is perpendicular to the plane of the crys…
