We present the results of photometric CCD observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable V405 Aurigae (RX J0558.0+5353 = 1RXS J055800.7+535358) obtained using different instruments. We analysed variability of the spin period of the white dwarf in the V405 Aur (RX J0558.0+5353) system using our observations and previously published maxima timings. The spin period of the system in 2010-2012 is $P=545.4558163(94)$s. As we have gaps in observational data, we present 2 hypotheses of the spin period variability of this system - a cubic ephemeris which may be interpreted by a precession of the magnetic white dwarf or a periodic change with a period of 6.2 years and semi-amplitude of $17.2\pm1.8$ sec. The periodic variations may be interpreted by a light-time effect caused by a low-mass star ($M_3\ge0.09M_\odot$). In this case, the system belongs to a rare class of cataclysmic variables with a third body.
FS Aur is famous for a variety of uncommon and puzzling periodic photometric and spectroscopic variabilities. It was previously proposed that the precession of a fast-rotating magnetically accreting white dwarf can successfully explain these phenomena. We present a study of FS Aur based on two extensive sets of optical photometric observations and three X-ray data sets in which we intended to verify whether the observational properties of the long period modulations observed in FS Aur and V455 And are similar in appearance to the spin modulation in ordinary IPs. These new optical observations …
We present preliminary results of long-term monitoring of the peculiar cataclysmic variable FS Aurigae conducted during the 2010-2011 observational season. The multicolor observations revealed, for the first time in photometric data, the precession period of the white dwarf, previously seen only spectroscopically. This is best seen in the (B-I) color index and reflects the spectral energy distribution variability. Analysis of X-ray observations made with Chandra and Swift, also revealed the existence of both the orbital and precession periods in the light curve. We also show that the long-term…
Results of $UBVRIJHKLM$ photometry and $VRI$ polarimetry of a young star RW Aur A observed during unprecedented long and deep (up to $ΔV \approx 5$ mag) dimming events in 2010-11 and 2014-18 are presented. The polarization degree $p$ of RW Aur A at this period has reached 30 per cent in the $I$ band. As in the case of UX Ori type stars (UXORs), the so-called 'bluing effect' in the colour-magnitude $V$ versus $V-R_{\rm c},$ $V-I_{\rm c}$ diagrams of the star and a strong anticorrelation between $p$ and brightness were observed. But the duration and the amplitude of the eclipses as well as the v…
In order to study precession and interstellar magnetic field variations, we measured the polarized position angle of 81 pulsars at several-month intervals for four years. We show that the uncertainties in a single-epoch measurement of position angle is usually dominated by random pulse-to-pulse jitter of the polarized subpulses. Even with these uncertainties, we find that the position angle variations in 19 pulsars are significantly better fitted (at the 3 σ level) by a sinusoid than by a constant. Such variations could be caused by precession, which would then indicate periods of ~ (200 - 130…
The brightest magnetic chemically peculiar stars theta Aur and eps UMa were targeted by numerous studies of their photometric and spectroscopic variability. Detailed maps of chemical abundance spots were repeatedly derived for both stars. However, very little information on the magnetic field geometries of these stars is available. In this study we aim to determine detailed magnetic field topologies of theta Aur and eps UMa based on modern, high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. Both targets were observed in all four Stokes parameters using the Narval and ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter…
We report the results of photometry of the intermediate polar V647 Aur. Observations were obtained over 42 nights in 2012 and 2013. The total duration of the observations was 246 h. We clearly detected three oscillations with periods of 932.9123+\-0.0011, 1008.30797+\-0.00038 and 1096.955+\-0.004 s, which may be the white dwarf spin period and two orbital sidebands, accordingly. The oscillation with a period of 932.9123 s has a quasi-sinusoidal pulse profile with a slightly changeable semi-amplitude from 10.9 mmag in 2012 to 12.5 mmag in 2013. The oscillation with a period of 1008.30797 s has …
Magnetars are conjectured to be highly magnetized neutron stars (NSs). Strong internal magnetic field and elasticity in the crust may deform the stars and lead to free precession. We study the precession dynamics of triaxially-deformed NSs incorporating the near-field and the far-field electromagnetic torques. We obtain timing residuals for different NS geometries and torques. We also investigate the polarized X-ray and radio signals from precessing magnetars. The modulations on the Stokes parameters are obtained for thermal X-rays emitted from the surface of magnetars. For radio signals, we a…
Millimeter-wavelength polarization measurements offer a promising method for probing the geometry of magnetic fields in circumstellar disks. Single dish observations and theoretical work have hinted that magnetic field geometries might be predominantly toroidal, and that disks should exhibit millimeter polarization fractions of 2-3%. While subsequent work has not confirmed these high polarization fractions, either the wavelength of observation or the target sources differed from the original observations. Here we present new polarimetric observations of three nearby circumstellar disks at 2" r…
The secondary of the famous young binary RW Aur is much less studied than the primary. To compensate this shortcoming, we present here the results of UBVRIJHK photometric, VRI polarimetric and optical spectral observations of RW Aur B. The star demonstrates chaotic brightness variations in the optical band with irregular short (~ 1 day) dimmings with an amplitude $ΔV$ up to $1.3^{\rm m}.$ The dimmings are accompanied with an increase in the linear polarization (up to 3 per cent in the I band), presumably due to the scattering of the stellar radiation by dust in the circumstellar disc that mean…
Variability of the spin period of the white dwarf in the V405 Aur (RX J0558.0+5353) system using our observations and previously published maxima timings is analyzed. As the phase light curve contains two nearly equal photometric waves, one maximum was set as a "primary" one. The ephemeris for the maxima of the "spin variability" (due to rotation of the magnetized white dwarf) for recent seasons 2010-2012 is Tmax = HJD 2455882.470614(25)+0.00631314602(46)E. This corresponds to a significant negative trend at the "O-C" diagram. Due to significant gaps in the observational data and statistical e…
A test particle orbit around an eccentric binary has two stationary states in which there is no nodal precession: coplanar and polar. Nodal precession of a misaligned test particle orbit centres on one of these stationary states. A low mass circumbinary disc undergoes the same precession and moves towards one of these states through dissipation within the disc. For a massive particle orbit, the stationary polar alignment occurs at an inclination less than $90^{\circ}$, this is the prograde-polar stationary inclination. A sufficiently high angular momentum particle has an additional higher incl…
We have studied the active giant V390 Aur using spectropolarimetry to obtain direct and simultaneous measurements of the magnetic field and the activity indicators in order to get a precise insight of its activity. We used the spectropolarimeter NARVAL at the Bernard Lyot Telescope (Observatoire du Pic du Midi, France) to obtain a series of Stokes I and Stokes V profiles. The Least Square deconvolution (LSD) technique was applied to detect the Zeeman signature of the magnetic field in each of our 13 observations and to measure its longitudinal component. We could also monitor the CaII K & H an…
We investigate the mechanism of polar alignment for accretion discs in hierarchical systems (HSs) with more than two stars. In eccentric binary systems, low mass discs that are sufficiently tilted to the binary orbit align in a polar configuration with respect to the binary plane by aligning their angular momentum to the binary eccentricity vector. In HSs, secular evolution of the orbital parameters makes the eccentricity vector of the system precess with time. This precession undermines the stability of the polar orbit for accretion discs hosted in HSs. We analytically show that the binary cr…
We present new high-resolution ($\sim$0\farcs09) $H$-band imaging observations of the circumstellar disk around the T Tauri star SU Aur. Our observations with Subaru-HiCIAO have revealed the presence of scattered light as close as 0\farcs15 ($\sim$20 AU) to the star. Within our image, we identify bright emission associated with a disk with a minimum radius of $\sim$90 AU, an inclination of $\sim$35\degr from the plane of the sky, and an approximate P.A. of 15\degr for the major axis. We find a brightness asymmetry between the northern and southern sides of the disk due to a non-axisymmetric di…
Photometric variability attributed to cloud phenomena is common in L/T transition brown dwarfs. Recent studies show that such variability may also trace aurorae, suggesting that localized magnetic heating may contribute to observed brown dwarf photometric variability. We assess this potential correlation with a survey of 17 photometrically variable brown dwarfs using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 4 -- 8 GHz. We detect quiescent and highly circularly polarized flaring emission from one source, 2MASS J17502484-0016151, which we attribute to auroral electron cyclotron maser emissio…
