The directed flow of charged particles at mid-rapidity is measured in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\rm{NN}}=2.76$ TeV relative to the collision symmetry plane defined by the spectator nucleons. A negative slope of the rapidity-odd directed flow component with approximately 3 times smaller magnitude than found at the highest RHIC energy is observed. This suggests a smaller longitudinal tilt of the initial system and disfavors the strong fireball rotation predicted for the LHC energies. The rapidity-even directed flow component is measured for the first time with spectators and found to be independent of pseudorapidity with a sign change at transverse momenta $p_{\rm T}$ between $1.2$ and $1.7$ GeV/$c$. Combined with the observation of a vanishing rapidity-even $p_{\rm T}$ shift along the spectator deflection this is strong evidence for dipole-like initial density fluctuations in the overlap zone of the nuclei. Similar trends in the rapidity-even directed flow and the estimate from two-particle correlations at mid-rapidity, which is larger by about a factor of 40, indicate a weak correlation between fluctuating participant and spectator symmetry planes. These observations open new possibilities for investigation of the initial conditions in heavy-ion collisions with spectator nucleons.
With INDRA at GSI, multifragmentation was studied in 197Au + 197Au reactions at bombarding energies 40 to 150 MeV per nucleon. The mechanisms of fragment production at mid-rapidity in peripheral collisions and the interplay of collective motion and fragmentation in central collisions were investigated. The balance energy for squeeze-out, i.e. the transition energy from in-plane to out-of-plane enhancement of the particle and fragment emissions is determined as a function of the impact parameter.
We report on the J$ψ$ nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|<0.9$) in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$2.76 TeV measured by ALICE. J$ψ$ candidates are reconstructed using their $e^+e^-$ decay channel. The kinematical coverage extends to zero transverse momentum allowing the measurement of integrated cross sections. We show the centrality dependence of the J$ψ$ $R_{\rm AA}$ at mid-rapidity compared to the results from PHENIX at mid-rapidity and ALICE results at forward-rapidity. We also discuss comparisons to calculations from theoretical models.
The production at central rapidity of K0s, Lambda, Xi and Omega particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c has been measured by the NA57 experiment over a centrality range corresponding to the most central 53% of the inelastic Pb-Pb cross section. In this paper we present the rapidity distribution of each particle in the central rapidity unit as a function of the event centrality. The distributions are analyzed based on hydrodynamical models of the collisions.
We estimate the effect of the spectator-induced electromagnetic interaction on the directed flow of charged pions. For intermediate centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$~GeV, we demonstrate that the electromagnetic interaction between spectator charges and final state pions results in charge splitting of positive and negative pion directed flow. Such a charge splitting is visible in the experimental data reported by the STAR Collaboration. The magnitude of this charge splitting appears to strongly depend on the actual distance between the pion emission site (pion at freeze-out) an…
Event-by-event fluctuations in the net charge and <pT> at mid-rapidity have been studied in Au+Au collisions using the central tracking arms in the PHENIX experiment at RHIC.
We present new results for the nuclear modification factor \RAA of \jpsi mesons as a function of centrality and transverse momentum at mid-rapidity. The measurement is carried out with the ALICE central barrel detectors in the acceptance range $|y|$ < 0.9 and \pt > 0 in the dielectron decay channel.
Mid-rapidity azimuthal correlations probe di-jets originating mainly from gluon-gluon hard-scattering. Measurements of such correlations have revealed significant (gluon-)jet modification in central Au+Au collisions. Azimuthal correlations at forward rapidity with a mid-rapidity high-pt hadron, on the other hand, are sensitive primarily to quark-gluon hard-scattering and may probe quark-jet modification in nuclear medium. They may be also sensitive to the Color Glass Condensate by separating d-side and Au-side in d+Au collisions. We present the first results on correlations of charged hadrons …
In this proceedings we present STAR measurements of two particle azimuthal correlations between trigger particles at mid-rapidity ($|η|<$ 1) and associated particles at forward rapidities (2.7 $<|η|<$ 3.9) in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} $= 200 GeV. Two particle azimuthal correlations between a mid-rapidity trigger particle and forward-rapidity associated particles preferably probe large-x quarks scattered off small-x gluons in RHIC collisions. Comparison of the separate d- and Au-side measurements in d+Au collisions may potentially probe gluon saturation and the presence o…
We present a measurement of the pseudorapidity density of primary charged particles near mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV as a function of the number of participating nucleons. These results are compared to models in an attempt to discriminate between competing scenarios of particle production in heavy ion collisions.
We report results on the ratio of mid-rapidity anti-proton to proton yields in Au+Au collisions at $\rts = 130$ GeV per nucleon pair as measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Within the rapidity and transverse momentum range of $|y|<0.5$ and 0.4 $<p_t<$ 1.0 GeV/$c$, the ratio is essentially independent of either transverse momentum or rapidity, with an average of $0.65\pm 0.01_{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.07_{\rm (syst.)}$ for minimum bias collisions. Within errors, no strong centrality dependence is observed. The results indicate that at this RHIC energy, although the $p$-$\pb$ pair production becom…
Mid-rapidity azimuthal correlations probe di-jets originating mainly from gluon-gluon hard-scattering. Measurements of such correlations have revealed significant (gluon-)jet modification in central Au+Au collisions. Azimuthal correlations of hadrons at forward rapidity with a mid-rapidity high-$\pt$ hadron, on the other hand, probe asymmetric partonic scatterings involving large-x quarks and small-x gluons. We present preliminary results from STAR on correlations of charged hadrons at forward rapidity in the forward TPCs ($2.7<|η|<3.9$, $\pt<2$ GeV/$c$) with high-$\pt$ charged hadrons at mid-…
Results are presented on $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $\bar{p}$ transverse mass spectra and particle multiplicity ratios at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$=130 and 200 GeV and in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. Comparisons are made to results from lower energies. The bulk properties of the collision inferred from these results are discussed.
We report the first measurement of strange ($Λ$) and anti-strange ($\barΛ$) baryon production from $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=130$ GeV Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Rapidity density and transverse mass distributions at mid-rapidity are presented as a function of centrality. The yield of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons is found to be approximately proportional to the number of negative hadrons. The production of $\barΛ$ hyperons relative to negative hadrons increases very rapidly with transverse momentum. The magnitude of the increase cannot be described by existing hadronic s…
In high energy heavy ion collisions, the directed flow of particles is conventionally measured with respect to that of the projectile spectators, which is defined as positive $x$ direction. But it is not known if the spectators deflect in the "outward" direction or "inward" -- toward the center line of the collision. In this Letter we discuss how the measurements of the directed flow at mid-rapidity, especially in asymmetric collision such as Cu+Au, can be used to answer this question. We show that the existing data strongly favor the case that the spectators, in the ultrarelativistic collisio…
The ratios of the yields of charged antiparticles to particles have been obtained for pions, kaons, and protons near mid-rapidity for d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV as a function of centrality. The reported values represent the ratio of the yields averaged over the rapidity range of 0.1<y_pi<1.3 and 0<y_(K,p)<0.8, where positive rapidity is in the deuteron direction, and for transverse momenta 0.1<p_(T)^(pi,K)<1.0 GeV/c and 0.3<p_(T)^(p)<1.0 GeV/c. Within the uncertainties, a lack of centrality dependence is observed in all three ratios. The data are compared to results from other sys…
The first measurement of the charged-particle multiplicity density at mid-rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV is presented. For an event sample corresponding to the most central 5% of the hadronic cross section the pseudo-rapidity density of primary charged particles at mid-rapidity is 1584 $\pm$ 4 (stat) $\pm$ 76 (sys.), which corresponds to 8.3 $\pm$ 0.4 (sys.) per participating nucleon pair. This represents an increase of about a factor 1.9 relative to pp collisions at similar collision energies, and about a factor 2.2 to c…
The centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity density at mid-rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV is presented. The charged-particle density normalized per participating nucleon pair increases by about a factor 2 from peripheral (70-80%) to central (0-5%) collisions. The centrality dependence is found to be similar to that observed at lower collision energies. The data are compared with models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions.
We report on the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy ($v_2$) of dielectrons ($e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs) at mid-rapidity from $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200$ GeV Au+Au collisions with the STAR detector at RHIC, presented as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) for different invariant-mass regions. In the mass region $M_{ee}\!<1.1$ GeV/$c^2$ the dielectron $v_2$ measurements are found to be consistent with expectations from $π^{0}$, $η$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ decay contributions. In the mass region $1.1\!<M_{ee}\!<2.9$ GeV/$c^2$, the measured dielectron $v_2$ is consistent, within experimental uncertaint…
Experiment NA44 has measured proton and antiproton distributions at mid-rapidity in sulphur and proton collisions with nuclear targets at 200 and 450 GeV/c per nucleon respectively. The inverse slopes of transverse mass distributions increase with system size for both protons and antiprotons but are slightly lower for antiprotons. this could happen if antiprotons are annihilated in the nuclear medium. The antiproton yield increases with system size and centrality and is largest at mid-rapdity. The proton yield also increases with system size and centrality, but decreases from backward rapidity…
We report STAR results on the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v2 for strange particles K0S and Lambda at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at /s_NN = 130 GeV at RHIC. The value of v2 as a function of transverse momentum pt and collision centrality is presented for both particles and compared to model calculations. A strong pt dependence in v2 is observed up to pt ~2.0 GeV/c where v2 begins to saturate.
Values of the ratios in the mid-rapidity yields of anti-Lambda/Lambda = 0.71 +/- 0.01(stat.) +/- 0.04(sys.), anti-Xi+/Xi- = 0.83 +/- 0.04(stat.) +/- 0.05 (sys.), anti-Omega+/Omega- = 0.95 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.05(sys.) and K+/K- 1.092 +/- 0.023(combined) were obtained in central sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector. The ratios indicate that a fraction of the net-baryon number from the initial system is present in the excess of hyperons over anti-hyperons at mid-rapidity. The trend in the progression of the baryon ratios, with increasing strange quark content, is similar…
We report a new measurement of negatively charged pion directed flow $v_1$ relative to the spectator plane for Pb+Pb collisions at the beam energy 40A GeV recorded by the NA49 experiment at CERN. $v_1$ is reported as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in different classes of collision centrality. The projectile spectator plane is estimated using transverse segmentation of the NA49 forward hadron calorimeter. The new results extend the NA49 data for $v_1$, which was previously measured only relative to the participant plane, and complement recent preliminary data by the NA61/SHINE c…
We present the results for the measurement of $ϕ$ meson production in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au and pp collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Using the event mixing technique, spectra and yields are obtained from the $ϕ\to K^{+}K^{-}$ decay channel for five centrality bins in Au+Au collisions and in pp collisions. We observe that the spectrum shape in Au+Au collisions depends weakly on the centrality and the shape of the spectrum in pp collisions is significantly different from that in Au+Au collisions.
In collisions of identical nuclei at a given impact parameter, the number of nucleons participating in the overlap region of each nucleus can be unequal due to nuclear density fluctuations. The asymmetry due to the unequal number of participating nucleons, referred to as longitudinal asymmetry, causes a shift in the center of mass rapidity of the participant zone. The information of the event asymmetry allows us to isolate and study the effect of longitudinal asymmetry on rapidity distribution of final state particles. In a Monte Carlo Glauber model the average rapidity-shift is found to be al…
We present results on inclusive electrons for 1.5 $ < p_{\rm T} < $ 6 GeV/$c$ in {Pb-Pb} collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV measured with ALICE at the LHC and compare these to a cocktail of background electron sources. The excess of electrons beyond the cocktail at high momenta ({$p_{\rm T} >$ 3.5 GeV/$c$}) is attributed to electrons from heavy-flavour decays. The corresponding nuclear modification factor indicates heavy-flavour suppression by a factor of 1.5-4.
We briefly discuss the methods of analysing reconstructed neutral strange particles in p+p collision data measured at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV taken using the Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC (STAR) detector. We present spectra for K0 short, lambda and anti-lambda as a function of pT and multiplicity, and compare to previous high energy p+pbar collision data. The two component nature of the spectra suggests contributions from hard and soft processes, and the observed increase of mean pT with multiplicity indicates a growing contribution from the hard processes. The work described herein was presented as a …
The PHOBOS experiment has measured the charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV as a function of the collision centrality. Results on dN/deta(eta<1) divided by the number of participating nucleon pairs, <Npart/2>, are presented as a function of <Npart>. As was found from similar data at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV, the data can be equally well described by parton saturation models and two-component fits which include contributions that scale as Npart and the number of binary collisions, Ncoll. We compare the data at the two energies by means of the rat…
The J/$ψ$ yields in heavy ion collisions are expected to be a promising probe of deconfined matter, since theoretical models predict that the J/$ψ$ production could be strongly suppressed due to color screening effect in a Quark Gluon Plasma. In addition, one of the interesting predictions that has emerged recently is the J/$ψ$ enhancement at RHIC energy via competing mechanisms such as recombination. The PHENIX collaboration has measured J/$ψ$ production via its decay into lepton pairs in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ for…
The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6, 130, 62.4 and 200 GeV as a function of centrality. The presented results are compared to measurements from other RHIC experiments, and experiments at lower energies. The $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ dependence of $dE_{T}/dη$ and $dN_{ch}/dη$ per pair of participants is consistent with logarithmic scaling for the most central events. The centrality dependence of $dE_{T}/dη$ and $dN_{ch}/dη$ is similar at all measured incident energies. At RHIC energi…
Results are presented for directed flow of negatively charged pions measured relative to the spectator plane in Pb+Pb collisions at the beam energy 40A GeV recorded by the NA49 experiment at CERN. The measure-ments were performed as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in two classes of collision centrality. The projectile spectator symmetry plane is estimated using the transverse segmentation of the forward hadron calorimeters. Analysis details related to event selection and particle dentification are provided along with a description of the procedure used to apply corrections for t…
Centrality definition in A$+$A collisions at colliders such as RHIC and LHC suffers from a correlated systematic uncertainty caused by the efficiency of detecting a p$+$p collision ($50\pm 5\%$ for PHENIX at RHIC). In A$+$A collisions where centrality is measured by the number of nucleon collisions, $N_{\rm coll}$, or the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, or the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{\rm qp}$, the error in the efficiency of the primary interaction trigger (Beam-Beam Counters) for a p$+$p collision leads to a correlated systematic uncertainty in $N_{\rm par…
The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6, 130 and 200 GeV as a function of centrality. The presented results are compared to measurements from other RHIC experiments, and experiments at lower energies. The sqrt(s_NN) dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta per pair of participants is consistent with logarithmic scaling for the most central events. The centrality dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta is similar at all measured incident energies. At RHIC energies the ratio of transverse…
One of the key signatures of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), is the modification of hadron transverse momentum differential cross-sections in heavy-ion collisions (HIC) as compared to proton-proton (pp) collisions. Suppression of hadron production at high transverse momenta (\pt)~in HIC has been explained by the energy loss of the partons produced in the hard scattering processes which traverse the deconfined quantum chromodynamic (QCD) matter. The dependence of the observed suppression on the \pt~ of the measured hadron towards higher \pt~ is an important input for the theoretical understanding…
We report on measurements of identified particle yields from Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4$ GeV made with the BRAHMS spectrometer. Here we will concentrate on the charged $K/π$ ratios as function of rapidity and baryo-chemical potential. We find that the $K/π$ ratios measured at different rapidities in the analysed dataset have a common dependence with the same ratios measured in mid-rapidity at SPS energies when plotted as function of the $\bar{p}/p$ ratio. The theoretical models used for comparison, UrQMD and AMPT, give a reasonable description of the particle yields at mid-rapid…
An excitation function of proton rapidity distributions for different centralities is reported from AGS Experiment E917 for Au+Au collisions at 6, 8, and 10.8 GeV/nucleon. The rapidity distributions from peripheral collisions have a valley at midrapidity which smoothly change to distributions that peak at midrapidity for central collisions. The mean rapidity loss increases with increasing beam energy, whereas the fraction of protons consistent with isotropic emission from a thermal source at midrapidity decreases with increasing beam energy.
Semi-inclusive charged jet spectra per trigger at STAR are presented binned by event activity (EA) as determined by the Beam Beam Counter (BBC) signal in the Au-going direction. The selected EA determination is motivated by correlations between the number of charged tracks in the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) ($|η|<1$) and EA ($η_\mathrm{EA}\in[-5,-2]$) which are also presented. The jet spectra per trigger at high EA are suppressed relative to the spectra at low EA. A PYTHIA investigation refutes that the suppression results from a trivial autocorrelation between jet kinematics and the accepta…
We have measured the ratios of antiparticles to particles for charged pions, kaons and protons near mid-rapidity in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV. For protons, we observe pbar/p = 0.60 +/- 0.04 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) in the transverse momentum range 0.15 < p_T < 1.0 GeV/c. This leads to an estimate of the baryo-chemical potential mu_B of 45 MeV, a factor of 5-6 smaller than in central Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 17.2 GeV.
We present the first results of meson production in the K^+K^- decay channel from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV as measured at mid-rapidity by the PHENIX detector at RHIC. Precision resonance centroid and width values are extracted as a function of collision centrality. No significant variation from the PDG accepted values is observed. The transverse mass spectra are fitted with a linear exponential function for which the derived inverse slope parameter is seen to be constant as a function of centrality. These data are also fitted by a hydrodynamic model with the result that the fre…
We present an overview of the ALICE measurements on the production of $\mathrm{J/}ψ$ in Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 2.76\,\mathrm{TeV}$ and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}= 5.02\,\mathrm{TeV}$ at mid-rapidity ($|y_\mathrm{lab} | < 0.8$) down to zero transverse momentum. The cold nuclear matter effects estimated from the p-Pb measurements and their impact on the interpretation of Pb-Pb results are discussed, based on comparison of data to model calculations.
We present the recent results for D-meson production measured by the ALICE collaboration in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.76$ TeV and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV.
The spectra of charged hadrons produced near mid-rapidity in d+Au, p+Au and n+Au collisions at 200 GeV center of mass energy per nucleon pair are presented as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. These measurements were performed using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Nucleon-nucleus interactions were extracted from the d+Au data by identifying the deuteron spectators. The deuteron spectators were measured using two calorimeters; one that detected forward-going single neutrons and a newly installed calorimeter that detected forward-going single pr…
In this paper we present recent results from the NA49 experiment for $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons produced in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions for $Λ$ are shown for all three energies. The shape of the rapidity distribution becomes flatter with increasing beam energy. The multiplicities at mid-rapidity as well as the total yields are studied as a function of collision energy including AGS measurements. The ratio $Λ/π$ at mid-rapidity and in 4$π$ has a maximum around 40 A$\cdot$GeV. In addition, $\barΛ$ rapidity distributions…
We present spectra of charged pions and protons in 0-10% central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at mid-rapidity ($y=0$) and forward pseudorapidity ($η=2.2$) measured with the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC. The spectra are compared to spectra from p+p collisions at the same energy scaled by the number of binary collisions. The resulting nuclear modification factors for central Au+Au collisions at both $y=0$ and $η=2.2$ exhibit suppression for charged pions but not for (anti-)protons at intermediate $p_T$. The $\bar{p}/π^-$ ratios have been measured up to $p_T\sim 3$ GeV/$c$ at the two …
We present the first measurement of pseudorapidity densities of primary charged particles near mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 56 and 130 AGeV. For the most central collisions, we find the charged particle pseudorapidity density to be $dN/dη|_{|η|<1} = 408 \pm 12 {(stat)} \pm 30 {(syst)}$ at 56 AGeV and $555 \pm 12 {(stat)} \pm 35 {(syst)}$ at 130 AGeV, values that are higher than any previously observed in nuclear collisions. Compared to proton-antiproton collisions, our data show an increase in the pseudorapidity density per participant by more than 40% at the higher energy.
Measurements of the production of high energy pi0 mesons at large pseudorapidity, coincident with charged hadrons at mid-rapidity, for proton+proton and deuteron+gold collisions at sqrt(s)_NN=200 GeV are reported. The p+p cross section for inclusive pi0 production follows expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD. Both the inclusive cross section and the di-hadron azimuthal correlations are consistent with a model where parton showers supplement leading-order pQCD. A suppression of the back-to-back azimuthal correlations was observed in d+Au, qualitatively consistent with the gl…
Invariant cross sections of intermediate mass fragments in peripheral collisions of Au on Au at incident energies between 40 and 150 AMeV have been measured with the 4-pi multi-detector INDRA. The maximum of the fragment production is located near mid-rapidity at the lower energies and moves gradually towards the projectile and target rapidities as the energy is increased. Schematic calculations within an extended Goldhaber model suggest that the observed cross-section distributions and their evolution with energy are predominantly the result of the clustering requirement for the emerging frag…
Neutral pion and $η$ meson production in the transverse momentum range 1 < $p_{T}$ < 20 GeV/$c$ have been measured at mid-rapidity by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in central and semi-central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. These results were obtained using the photon conversion method as well as the PHOS and EMCal detectors. The results extend the upper $p_{T}$ reach of the previous ALICE $π^{0}$ measurements from 12 GeV/$c$ to 20 GeV/$c$ and present the first measurement of $η$ meson production in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. The $η/π^{0}$ ratio …
The rapidity and centrality dependence of baryon to meson ratios in Au$+$Au, Cu$+$Cu and p$+$p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at RHIC is presented. The $\bar{p}/π^{-}$ ratios are founded to be independent of collision system at a fixed $<N_{part}>$ at mid- and forward rapidities.
The ALICE Collaboration has measured heavy-flavour production through the reconstruction of hadronic decays of D mesons at mid-rapidity and via semi-electronic (at mid-rapidity) and semi-muonic (at forward rapidity) decays of charm and beauty hadrons in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions. A summary of the most recent results from p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV is presented in this paper.
Studies of longitudinal correlations of the charged-particle multiplicity in heavy-ion collisions have provided insights into the asymmetry and fluctuations of the initial-state collision geometry. In addition to the expansion of the medium in the transverse direction, commonly quantified using Fourier coefficients ($v_{n}$), the initial geometry and resulting longitudinal expansion as a function of azimuthal angle enable us to better understand the full 3-dimensional picture of heavy-ion collisions. In these proceedings, azimuthal correlations of the longitudinal structure of charged-particle…
The invariant differential cross section for inclusive neutral pion production in p+p collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV has been measured at mid-rapidity |eta| < 0.35 over the range 1 < p_T <~ 14 GeV/c by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. Predictions of next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations are consistent with these measurements. The precision of our result is sufficient to differentiate between prevailing gluon-to-pion fragmentation functions.
The first measurement of energy produced transverse to the beam direction at RHIC is presented. The mid-rapidity transverse energy density per participating nucleon rises steadily with the number of participants, closely paralleling the rise in charged-particle density, such that E_T / N_ch remains relatively constant as a function of centrality. The energy density calculated via Bjorken's prescription for the 2% most central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV is at least epsilon_Bj = 4.6 GeV/fm^3 which is a factor of 1.6 larger than found at sqrt(s_NN)=17.2 GeV (Pb+Pb at CERN).
The multiplicity dependence of the pseudorapidity density of charged particles in proton-proton (pp) collisions at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02, 7 and 13 TeV measured by ALICE is reported. The analysis relies on track segments measured in the midrapidity range ($|η| < 1.5$). Results are presented for inelastic events having at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval $|η|<1$ ($\mathrm{INEL}_{>0}$). The multiplicity dependence of the pseudorapidy density of charged particles is measured with mid and forward rapidity multiplicity estimators, the latter bein…
We report STAR results on the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v2 for strange particles K0S, L and Lbar at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 130 GeV at RHIC. The value of v2 as a function of transverse momentum of the produced particles pt and collision centrality is presented for both particles up to pt 3.0 GeV/c. A strong pt dependence in v2 is observed up to 2.0 GeV/c. The v2 measurement is compared with hydrodynamic model calculations. The physics implications of the pt integrated v2 magnitude as a function of particle mass are also discussed.
A measurement of beauty hadron production at mid-rapidity in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV is presented. The semi-inclusive decay channel of beauty hadrons into J/$ψ$ is considered, where the J/$ψ$ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at mid-rapidity down to transverse momenta of 1.3 GeV/$c$. The ${\rm {b\overline{b}}}$ production cross section at mid-rapidity, ${\rm d}σ_{\rm {b\overline{b}}}/{\rm d} y$, and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, $σ_{\rm {b\overline{b}}}$, are obtained. Th…
The BRAHMS experiment was designed to measure and characterize in particular the properties of rapidity dependence of particle production in heavy ion collisions. The data-taking is now over, results of several years of analysis have been published and demonstrates several important features of the rapidity dependence, not envisioned from the start of the RHIC program. The bulk properties of the system formed at high rapidity resemble that of systems at lower energies at mid-rapidity when referenced via the baryo-chemical potential. New physics in AA are essentially observed at mid-rapidity in…
The PHENIX experiment has shown that J/psis are suppressed in central Au+Au collisions at a center of mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sqrt s(NN) = 200 GeV, and that the suppression is larger at forward than at mid-rapidity. Part of this difference may be explained by cold nuclear matter effects but the most central collisions suggest that regeneration mechanisms could be at play. In 2007, PHENIX collected almost four times more Au+Au collisions at this energy than used for previous published results. Moreover, the addition of a new reaction plane detector allows a much better analysi…
