In this paper, we devise three deterministic algorithms for solving the $m$-set $k$-packing, $m$-dimensional $k$-matching, and $t$-dominating set problems in time $O^*(5.44^{mk})$, $O^*(5.44^{(m-1)k})$ and $O^*(5.44^{t})$, respectively. Although recently there has been remarkable progress on randomized solutions to those problems, our bounds make good improvements on the best known bounds for deterministic solutions to those problems.
One of the most fundamental problems in wireless networks is to achieve high throughput. Fractional Connected Dominating Set (FCDS) Packings can achieve a throughput of $Θ(k/\log n)$ messages for networks with node connectivity $k$, which is optimal regarding routing-based message transmission. FCDS were proposed by Censor-Hillel \emph{et al.} [SODA'14,PODC'14] and are a natural generalization to Connected Dominating Sets (CDS), allowing each node to participate with a fraction of its weight in multiple FCDS. Thus, $Ω(k)$ co-existing transmission backbones are established, taking full advantag…
A set of vertices in a graph is a dominating set if every vertex outside the set has a neighbor in the set. A dominating set is connected if the subgraph induced by its vertices is connected. The connected domatic partition problem asks for a partition of the nodes into connected dominating sets. The connected domatic number of a graph is the size of a largest connected domatic partition and it is a well-studied graph parameter with applications in the design of wireless networks. In this note, we consider the fractional counterpart of the connected domatic partition problem in \emph{node-capa…
We present three deterministic parameterized algorithms for well-studied packing and matching problems, namely, Weighted q-Dimensional p-Matching ((q,p)-WDM) and Weighted q-Set p-Packing ((q,p)-WSP). More specifically, we present an O*(2.85043^{(q-1)p}) time deterministic algorithm for (q,p)-WDM, an O*(8.04143^p) time deterministic algorithm for the unweighted version of (3,p)-WDM, and an O*((0.56201\cdot 2.85043^q)^p) time deterministic algorithm for (q,p)-WSP. Our algorithms significantly improve the previously best known O* running times in solving (q,p)-WDM and (q,p)-WSP, and the previousl…
We develop deterministic approximation algorithms for the minimum dominating set problem in the CONGEST model with an almost optimal approximation guarantee. For $ε>1/{\text{poly}}\log Δ$ we obtain two algorithms with approximation factor $(1+ε)(1+\ln (Δ+1))$ and with runtimes $2^{O(\sqrt{\log n \log\log n})}$ and $O(Δ\cdot\text{poly}\log Δ+\text{poly}\log Δ\log^{*} n)$, respectively. Further we show how dominating set approximations can be deterministically transformed into a connected dominating set in the \CONGEST model while only increasing the approximation guarantee by a constant factor.…
Iterative rounding has enjoyed tremendous success in elegantly resolving open questions regarding the approximability of problems dominated by covering constraints. Although iterative rounding methods have been applied to packing problems, no single method has emerged that matches the effectiveness and simplicity afforded by the covering case. We offer a simple iterative packing technique that retains features of Jain's seminal approach, including the property that the magnitude of the fractional value of the element rounded during each iteration has a direct impact on the approximation guaran…
The online dominating set problem is an online variant of the minimum dominating set problem, which is one of the most important NP-hard problems on graphs. This problem is defined as follows: Given an undirected graph $G = (V, E)$, in which $V$ is a set of vertices and $E$ is a set of edges. We say that a set $D \subseteq V$ of vertices is a {\em dominating set} of $G$ if for each $v \in V \setminus D$, there exists a vertex $u \in D$ such that $\{ u, v \} \in E$. The vertices are revealed to an online algorithm one by one over time. When a vertex is revealed, edges between the vertex and ver…
We investigate whether kernelization results can be obtained if we restrict kernelization algorithms to run in logarithmic space. This restriction for kernelization is motivated by the question of what results are attainable for preprocessing via simple and/or local reduction rules. We find kernelizations for d-Hitting Set(k), d-Set Packing(k), Edge Dominating Set(k) and a number of hitting and packing problems in graphs, each running in logspace. Additionally, we return to the question of linear-time kernelization. For d-Hitting Set(k) a linear-time kernelization was given by van Bevern [Algo…
We show that there is no deterministic local algorithm (constant-time distributed graph algorithm) that finds a $(7-ε)$-approximation of a minimum dominating set on planar graphs, for any positive constant $ε$. In prior work, the best lower bound on the approximation ratio has been $5-ε$; there is also an upper bound of $52$.

We provide a deterministic CONGEST algorithm to constant factor approximate the minimum dominating set on graphs of bounded arboricity in $O(\log n)$ rounds. This improves over the well-known randomized algorithm of Lenzen and Wattenhofer[DISC2010] by making it a deterministic algorithm.
We describe a simple deterministic $O( \varepsilon^{-1} \log Δ)$ round distributed algorithm for $(2α+1)(1 + \varepsilon)$ approximation of minimum weighted dominating set on graphs with arboricity at most $α$. Here $Δ$ denotes the maximum degree. We also show a lower bound proving that this round complexity is nearly optimal even for the unweighted case, via a reduction from the celebrated KMW lower bound on distributed vertex cover approximation [Kuhn, Moscibroda, and Wattenhofer JACM'16]. Our algorithm improves on all the previous results (that work only for unweighted graphs) including a r…
An important area of combinatorial optimization is the study of packing and covering problems, such as Bin Packing, Multiple Knapsack, and Bin Covering. Those problems have been studied extensively from the viewpoint of approximation algorithms, but their parameterized complexity has only been investigated barely. For problem instances containing no "small" items, classical matching algorithms yield optimal solutions in polynomial time. In this paper we approach them by their distance from triviality, measuring the problem complexity by the number $k$ of small items. Our main results are fixed…
We introduce the \emph{Online Connected Dominating Set Leasing} problem (OCDSL) in which we are given an undirected connected graph $G = (V, E)$, a set $\mathcal{L}$ of lease types each characterized by a duration and cost, and a sequence of subsets of $V$ arriving over time. A node can be leased using lease type $l$ for cost $c_l$ and remains active for time $d_l$. The adversary gives in each step $t$ a subset of nodes that need to be dominated by a connected subgraph consisting of nodes active at time $t$. The goal is to minimize the total leasing costs. OCDSL contains the \emph{Parking Perm…
We revisit the minimum dominating set problem on graphs with arboricity bounded by $α$. Bansal and Umboh [BU17] gave an $O(α)$-approximation LP rounding algorithm, which also translates into a near-linear time algorithm using general-purpose approximation results for explicit mixed packing and covering or pure covering LPs [KY14, You14, AZO19, Qua10]. Moreover, [BU17] showed that it is NP-hard to achieve an asymptotic improvement for the approximation factor. On the other hand, the previous two non-LP-based algorithms, by Lenzen and Wattenhofer [LW10], and Jones et al. [JLR+13], achieve an app…
Motivated by applications in machine learning, such as subset selection and data summarization, we consider the problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function subject to mixed packing and covering constraints. We present a tight approximation algorithm that for any constant $ε>0$ achieves a guarantee of $1-\frac{1}{\mathrm{e}}-ε$ while violating only the covering constraints by a multiplicative factor of $1-ε$. Our algorithm is based on a novel enumeration method, which unlike previous known enumeration techniques, can handle both packing and covering constraints. We extend the above mai…
In the dynamic linear program (LP) problem, we are given an LP undergoing updates and we need to maintain an approximately optimal solution. Recently, significant attention (e.g., [Gupta et al. STOC'17; Arar et al. ICALP'18, Wajc STOC'20]) has been devoted to the study of special cases of dynamic packing and covering LPs, such as the dynamic fractional matching and set cover problems. But until now, there is no non-trivial dynamic algorithm for general packing and covering LPs. In this paper, we settle the complexity of dynamic packing and covering LPs, up to a polylogarithmic factor in update…
The Minimum Dominating Set (MDS) problem is not only one of the most fundamental problems in distributed computing, it is also one of the most challenging ones. While it is well-known that minimum dominating sets cannot be approximated locally on general graphs, over the last years, several breakthroughs have been made on computing local approximations on sparse graphs. This paper presents a deterministic and local constant factor approximation for minimum dominating sets on bounded genus graphs, a very large family of sparse graphs. Our main technical contribution is a new analysis of a sligh…
In this paper we present a theoretical analysis of the deterministic on-line {\em Sum of Squares} algorithm ($SS$) for bin packing introduced and studied experimentally in \cite{CJK99}, along with several new variants. $SS$ is applicable to any instance of bin packing in which the bin capacity $B$ and item sizes $s(a)$ are integral (or can be scaled to be so), and runs in time $O(nB)$. It performs remarkably well from an average case point of view: For any discrete distribution in which the optimal expected waste is sublinear, $SS$ also has sublinear expected waste. For any discrete distributi…
Karger used spanning tree packings to derive a near linear-time randomized algorithm for the global minimum cut problem as well as a bound on the number of approximate minimum cuts. This is a different approach from his well-known random contraction algorithm. Thorup developed a fast deterministic algorithm for the minimum $k$-cut problem via greedy recursive tree packings. In this paper we revisit properties of an LP relaxation for $k$-cut proposed by Naor and Rabani, and analyzed by Chekuri, Guha and Naor. We show that the dual of the LP yields a tree packing, that when combined with an uppe…
In [1], whether a target binary string s can be represented from a boolean formula with operands chosen from a set of binary strings W was studied. In this paper, we first examine selecting a maximum subset X from W, so that for any string t in X, t is not representable by X\{t}. We rephrase this problem as graph, and surprisingly find it give rise to a broad model of edge packing problem, which itself falls into the model of forbidden subgraph problem. Specifically, given a graph G(V;E) and a constant c, the problem asks to choose as many as edges to form a subgraph G'. So that in G', for eac…
Column-sparse packing problems arise in several contexts in both deterministic and stochastic discrete optimization. We present two unifying ideas, (non-uniform) attenuation and multiple-chance algorithms, to obtain improved approximation algorithms for some well-known families of such problems. As three main examples, we attain the integrality gap, up to lower-order terms, for known LP relaxations for k-column sparse packing integer programs (Bansal et al., Theory of Computing, 2012) and stochastic k-set packing (Bansal et al., Algorithmica, 2012), and go "half the remaining distance" to opti…
In this paper, we consider tree decompositions, branch decompositions, and clique decompositions. We improve the running time of dynamic programming algorithms on these graph decompositions for a large number of problems as a function of the treewidth, branchwidth, or cliquewidth, respectively. On tree decompositions of width $k$, we improve the running time for Dominating Set to $O(3^k)$. We generalise this result to $[ρ,σ]$-domination problems with finite or cofinite $ρ$ and $σ$. For these problems, we give $O(s^k)$-time algorithms, where $s$ is the number of `states' a vertex can have in a …
The Cycle Packing problem asks whether a given undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles. Since the publication of the classic Erdős-Pósa theorem in 1965, this problem received significant scientific attention in the fields of Graph Theory and Algorithm Design. In particular, this problem is one of the first problems studied in the framework of Parameterized Complexity. The non-uniform fixed-parameter tractability of Cycle Packing follows from the Robertson-Seymour theorem, a fact already observed by Fellows and Langston in the 1980s. In 1994, Bodlaender showed that Cycle …
The recently introduced online Minimum Peak Appointment Scheduling (MPAS) problem is a variant of the online bin-packing problem that allows for deferred decision making. Specifically, it allows for the problem to be split into an online phase where a stream of appointment requests arrive requiring a scheduled time, followed by an offline phase where those appointments are scheduled into rooms. Similar to the bin-packing problem, the aim is to use the minimum number of rooms in the final configuration. This model more accurately captures scheduling appointments than bin packing. For example, a…
We design the first online algorithm with poly-logarithmic competitive ratio for the edge-weighted degree-bounded Steiner forest(EW-DB-SF) problem and its generalized variant. We obtain our result by demonstrating a new generic approach for solving mixed packing/covering integer programs in the online paradigm. In EW-DB-SF we are given an edge-weighted graph with a degree bound for every vertex. Given a root vertex in advance we receive a sequence of terminal vertices in an online manner. Upon the arrival of a terminal we need to augment our solution subgraph to connect the new terminal to the…
In this work, we study the classic submodular maximization problem under knapsack constraints and beyond. We first present an $(7/16-\varepsilon)$-approximate algorithm for single knapsack constraint, which requires $O(n\cdot\max\{\varepsilon^{-1},\log\log n\})$ queries, and two passes in the streaming setting. This provides improvements in approximation ratio, query complexity and number of passes on the stream. We next show that there exists an $(1/2-\varepsilon)$-approximate deterministic algorithm for constant number of binary packing constraints, which achieves a query complexity of $O_{\…
The Minimum Dominating Set (MDS) problem is one of the most fundamental and challenging problems in distributed computing. While it is well-known that minimum dominating sets cannot be approximated locally on general graphs, over the last years, there has been much progress on computing local approximations on sparse graphs, and in particular planar graphs. In this paper we study distributed and deterministic MDS approximation algorithms for graph classes beyond planar graphs. In particular, we show that existing approximation bounds for planar graphs can be lifted to bounded genus graphs, and…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of graphs, and let $p,r$ be nonnegative integers. The \textsc{$(p,r,\mathcal{F})$-Covering} problem asks whether for a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, there exists a set $D$ of at most $k$ vertices in $G$ such that $G^p\setminus N_G^r[D]$ has no induced subgraph isomorphic to a graph in $\mathcal{F}$, where $G^p$ is the $p$-th power of $G$. The \textsc{$(p,r,\mathcal{F})$-Packing} problem asks whether for a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, $G^p$ has $k$ induced subgraphs $H_1,\ldots,H_k$ such that each $H_i$ is isomorphic to a graph in $\mathcal{F}$, and for distinct $…
An extremity is a vertex such that the removal of its closed neighbourhood does not increase the number of connected components. Let $Ext_α$ be the class of all connected graphs whose quotient graph obtained from modular decomposition contains no more than $α$ pairwise nonadjacent extremities. Our main contributions are as follows. First, we prove that the diameter of every $m$-edge graph in $Ext_α$ can be computed in deterministic ${\cal O}(α^3 m^{3/2})$ time. We then improve the runtime to linear for all graphs with bounded clique-number. Furthermore, we can compute an additive $+1$-approxim…
We present a deterministic distributed algorithm, in the LOCAL model, that computes a $(1+o(1))Δ$-edge-coloring in polylogarithmic-time, so long as the maximum degree $Δ=\tildeΩ(\log n)$. For smaller $Δ$, we give a polylogarithmic-time $3Δ/2$-edge-coloring. These are the first deterministic algorithms to go below the natural barrier of $2Δ-1$ colors, and they improve significantly on the recent polylogarithmic-time $(2Δ-1)(1+o(1))$-edge-coloring of Ghaffari and Su [SODA'17] and the $(2Δ-1)$-edge-coloring of Fischer, Ghaffari, and Kuhn [FOCS'17], positively answering the main open question of t…
The stochastic matching problem deals with finding a maximum matching in a graph whose edges are unknown but can be accessed via queries. This is a special case of stochastic $k$-set packing, where the problem is to find a maximum packing of sets, each of which exists with some probability. In this paper, we provide edge and set query algorithms for these two problems, respectively, that provably achieve some fraction of the omniscient optimal solution. Our main theoretical result for the stochastic matching (i.e., $2$-set packing) problem is the design of an \emph{adaptive} algorithm that que…
The paper describes a simple deterministic parallel/distributed (2+epsilon)-approximation algorithm for the minimum-weight vertex-cover problem and its dual (edge/element packing).
We present a deterministic dynamic algorithm for maintaining a $(1+ε)f$-approximate minimum cost set cover with $O(f\log(Cn)/ε^2)$ amortized update time, when the input set system is undergoing element insertions and deletions. Here, $n$ denotes the number of elements, each element appears in at most $f$ sets, and the cost of each set lies in the range $[1/C, 1]$. Our result, together with that of Gupta et al. [STOC`17], implies that there is a deterministic algorithm for this problem with $O(f\log(Cn))$ amortized update time and $O(\min(\log n, f))$-approximation ratio, which nearly matches t…
We extend the notion of lossy kernelization, introduced by Lokshtanov et al. [STOC 2017], to approximate Turing kernelization. An $α$-approximate Turing kernel for a parameterized optimization problem is a polynomial-time algorithm that, when given access to an oracle that outputs $c$-approximate solutions in $O(1)$ time, obtains an $(α\cdot c)$-approximate solution to the considered problem, using calls to the oracle of size at most $f(k)$ for some function $f$ that only depends on the parameter. Using this definition, we show that Independent Set parameterized by treewidth $\ell$ has a $(1+\…
The bandit problem with graph feedback, proposed in [Mannor and Shamir, NeurIPS 2011], is modeled by a directed graph $G=(V,E)$ where $V$ is the collection of bandit arms, and once an arm is triggered, all its incident arms are observed. A fundamental question is how the structure of the graph affects the min-max regret. We propose the notions of the fractional weak domination number $δ^*$ and the $k$-packing independence number capturing upper bound and lower bound for the regret respectively. We show that the two notions are inherently connected via aligning them with the linear program of t…
Bidimensionality theory is a powerful framework for the development of metaalgorithmic techniques. It was introduced by Demaine et al. as a tool to obtain sub-exponential time parameterized algorithms for problems on H-minor free graphs. Demaine and Hajiaghayi extended the theory to obtain PTASs for bidimensional problems, and subsequently improved these results to EPTASs. Fomin et. al related the theory to the existence of linear kernels for parameterized problems. In this paper we revisit bidimensionality theory from the perspective of approximation algorithms and redesign the framework for …
